WILLIAM BENJAMIN
Another Pioneer is Laid to Rest After Long Years of Labor
Wm. Benjamin of Harrison Township, Lee County, was born at Lorraine,
France, December
29, 1808(?) and at the age of 21(?) years he emigrated
to America. He landed at New Orleans, remaining there until 1840, when
he
started for the far west, continuing his journey to Iowa and locating
on a
quarter section of land in Harrison Township, about two miles west of
the town of
Primrose. He remained there until his death, which occurred on Sunday,
May 24,
at about 8 o'clock a.m., after an illness of only a few days.
He was interred on Tuesday, says a correspondent to the Gate City, May
26, at 3
o'clock at what is known as the George Acklam
burying
ground, about one and one half miles from Primrose. The following named
gentlemen acted as pall
bearers: Conrad Schweer Sr., Wiley Barton,
John
Taylor, Henry Bollinger, C.C. Bauder and
Jessie McMillen. There was a large
procession of sympathizing
friends attending and following the remains to their last resting
place.
He was highly respected by all. His
honesty and
integrity were never questioned, and being industrious(?)
and frugal during his whole life he *********, leaving a good farm well
improved and stocked and no debts to be settled. The following
named children survive him: Mrs. M Horn(?) Primrose, Mrs. William Schweer,
Keokuk, Mr. William ******* (whole line unreadable) min, Pueblo,
Colorado, and
Louis Benjamin, Seattle, Washington. The children were all in
attendance
at the burial except Louis Benjamin.
