Joseph Hillery and Mary Martin Biography
Joseph Hillery, my 3rd great grandfather, was born about 1795 in Maryland, and came to Ohio with his father, Jeremiah Hillery, in the early 1800's. He married in Pickaway County Ohio to Sarah Griffin Parker (1820) and Mary Martin (1831). In 1833 he bought land in Vermillion County, Illinois. He was in Henry County, Iowa for the 1840 census, and bought land in Benton Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, in 1842. He signed a temperance pledge in Sigourney in 1845. Joseph Hillery died in Keokuk county in 1868, and is buried at Abel Cemetery in Keokuk county.

Joseph Hillery's known children are:

Margaret, b. 1833 in Ohio, married Warren Woodward in Keokuk County in 1852.

Harriet, b. 1836 in Illinois, married William Jones in Keokuk County in 1855.

Elizabeth, b. 1838 in Illinois, married Louis Godfrey in Keokuk County in 1866.

Milton, b. 1841 in Jefferson County, Iowa, married Sarah A. Neas in Keokuk County in 1867.
