Obituary

James P. Scanlon, 46, of 930 W. Park Road, Iowa City, died Saturday at University Hospitals after a short illness.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. David Goetsch will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the George L. Gay Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Mr. Scanlon was born May 2, 1942, in Iowa City, son of George and Beatrice Messer Scanlon. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1960, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon in 1964 and his master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1967. He was a general partner of Scanlon Farms, Ltd. He married Jennifer Clarke June 22, 1961, in Santa Clara, California. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, the North Liberty Optimists, Knights of Columbus, treasurer of the Boy Scouts, Presidents Club at University of Iowa, Quarterback Club, BPOE and the Iowa City Library Board.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Jane Scanlon and Marcia Scanlon; and two sons, Patrick and Clarke , all of Iowa City. His father died January 6, 1969 and his mother died June 12, 1984. One sister also died earlier.
