Iowa
State Seal

A LITTLE IOWA HISTORY
The lands comprising present-day Iowa were part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In 1812, when Louisiana was made a state, the remaining Purchase lands were attached to the Missouri Territory. After Missouri attained statehood in 1821 the remaining lands were left unorganized until after the Black Hawk War ended in 1832. In 1834 the unorganized lands were attached to the Michigan Territory, at this time comprising all of present-day Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas east of the Missouri River. In 1836 the Wisconsin Territory was organized, including the lands to become Iowa. Michigan became a state in 1837 and the remaining lands attached then to Wisconsin Territory. Thus they remained until 1838 when the Iowa Territory was organized, including lands west of the Mississippi River and east of the Missouri River. Iowa became a state in its own right on December 28, 1846, the 29th state of the Union.

Website and Researcher Accolades

I just wanted somebody to know that I have found the Jefferson County Genealogy website incredibly helpful in researching my family history. For what it’s worth, you’re doing WAY better than most other states/counties I’m encountering in my detective project tracking down great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, etc. -Amy S., May, 2011.

I just want to say "WOW"!!! I was just searching on your website for some info to complete a 25+ year family history project and, although I didn't find exactly what I needed, I found enough info to search other records.

I wish all the USGENWEB state/county websites was as great as yours! I know the work involved but it is soooooo helpful to those looking into the past!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! -ckay, June, 2011.

I appreciate your assistance in getting me a picture of my grandfather. You are very special to do this so quickly. Thanks so much. -Thomas K., June, 2011.

Richard, Thank you so much for all the work that you did on the Foote family and the Lewis Wilson family. It was very interesting to me that two distant branches of the same family line crossed in Jefferson County, Iowa. Your being "on site" is so helpful! -Gini P., June, 2011.

Thanks so much for all the photos and information you have sent! -Michael C., May, 2011.
