Larkin E. Zachary, residing at Prairie City, was born in Old Virginia November 20, 1818. In 1839 he located in Ohio. In his native state he learned the painter's trade, which he usually followed outside during the summer months and in a furniture factory during the winter, which business he followed for many years. On coming to Jasper County in 1851, his cash capital amounted to about $80.00, $50.00 of which was paid for a 40-acre tract of land. He immediately engaged at farming and stock raising, and how well he succeeded can be imagined when we state that he now owns 2,400 acres of Jasper County soil. In 1876 the Draper & Zachary Bank was started in Prairie City, which they operated together for about three years, when Mr. Zachary purchased his partner's interest. It was then operated as the Zachary Bank, by which it is still known, although the bank passed out of his hands January 15, 1901. Mr. Zachary was united in marriage January 29, 1840, to Elizabeth Blee, a native of Ohio. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are living. Five are residents of Jasper County and one in Polk. His wife departed this life May 27, 1890, and he is thereby deprived of his only comfort during his declining years. Part III, page 7
