~ Neel, S. F. ~Photo

S. F. Neel, proprietor of Neel's Bakery on the east side of the square, has lived in Newton since Oct. 1, 1900. He was born on the Island of Jersey, on the coast of England, Aug. 15, 1865. His parents removed to France in 1872. He there attended the schools, and in 1875, they came to America landing at New Orleans, and finally settling at Sequin, near Austin, Texas. Mr. Neel remained there until 1889, and engaged in various occupations. From 1889 to 1896 he was employed as a traveling salesman, traveling out of Detroit, Michigan. In 1896 he located at Bolivar, near Joplin, Mo., and engaged in the bakery business, and from there he removed to Newton. Mr. Neel was married Miss Margaret Bates, in Camden, Arkansas, Nov. 2, 1897. Mrs. Neel was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1873, and removed with her parents to Nebraska and later returned to Iowa. Mr. Neel is a member of the W. O. W. Page 48.


~ Newell, John P. ~Photo

John P. Newell, a prominent businessman of Newton, and proprietor of the Continental Clothing Store in Newton and Monroe, Iowa, was born in Bucyrus, Ohio, November 17, 1862, and removed to Newton with his parents in August 1868. He secured his education in the public schools of Newton, and at the age of fourteen took a position as clerk in a newsstand on the west side of the square. Page 47

Thomas J. Newell, farmer and stock feeder, residing on Section 26, Mound Prairie Township, was born in Wapello County, Iowa, in 1861, and with his parents, W. M. and Catherine Newell, came to Jasper County in 1867. His father was a native of Ohio and his mother a native of Indiana. W. M. Newell came to Iowa with his parents in 1849 and located in Wapello County. Our subject's first piece of land was purchased in 1891, on Section 35. In 1897 he purchased 280 acres on Sections 24 and 25. This he sold in 1900 and purchased his present farm, consisting of 240 acres, which is well improved, and on which is located good and substantial buildings. Mr. Newell has been twice married. His first marriage was in 1896, to Katie Magg. Two children were born to them, Marie C. and Katie. His wife departed this life in the spring of 1899. His second marriage was to Andrekia Van Duseldorp in March 1901. Our subject is a successful businessman, and possesses one of the best farms in Mound Prairie Township. Page 39


~ Nolin, Albert ~Photo

Albert Nolin, who conducts a blacksmith and wagon repair shop on Section 26, Fairview Township is the son of George Washington and Mary Jane (Thorne) Nolin, and was born in Jasper County November 5, 1863. May 14, 1888, he married Mary Josephine Piper, daughter of Solomon and Josephine (Heydon) Piper. They are the parents of three sons and two daughters: George Washington, Ira Albert, Guy Ingersol, Blanche Eleanor, and Hazel Marie. Page 16

C. M. Norris, residing in Des Moines Township, was born in Morgan County, Illinois, March 8, 1842. He is the son of J. D. and Mary (Lamb) Norris, natives of Ohio and Kentucky, respectively. The family removed to Jasper County in the fall of 1846. Here our subject grew to manhood, receiving his education in the district schools. In July 1861, he enlisted in Company B, 5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and served three years and one month. During his service he participated in the battles of Iuka, Mississippi, Corinth, New Madrid, Missouri, Jackson, Mississippi, Champion Hill, siege of Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, and other minor engagements. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Sarah Prunty. Two children were born to them, one of whom is living, Benjamin F. His second marriage was in March 1888, to Hannah Waters; have two children, Winnie Dell and Nellie A. Page 12
