NEEDHAM, Stephen
Farmer, Sec. 7., P. O. Amboy; born in Hampden Co., Mass., in 1820; located in Rock Creek Tp., this county in 1855; went into business in Newton in 1858. He enlisted in the 10th Iowa Vol. in Sept., 1861, in the regimental band; mustered out in March, 1862, by special order of the War Department. He went into the merchant tailoring business again in Newton, and continued until 1868, when he purchased a farm in Newton Tp., which he cultivated for a few years, and sold out and located in this township. He married Nancy JAINES in 1843; she was also born in Massachusetts; she died in 1858; their two children-- Frank A. and Charley O., are residents of this county. He married his present wife, Mrs. A. E. NEELY (PETTET) in 1859; have one child-- James S., born Dec.. 28, 1864. Mrs. NEEDHAM is a member of the Disciple Church; he is a Democrat. He owns sixty acres of land, valued at $40 per acre.

They are members of the M. E. Church; he is a Republican. Township Trustee. Jane YOUNG, also a member of Mr. OWINGS' family, was born in Belmont Co., Ohio, in 1818. Attorney at law; Kellogg; born in Monroe Co., N. Y., in 1834; moved with his parents to Hamilton, Canada, when a child; he returned to the United States and located in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1857; he studied law with the Hon. W. P. NOBLE, M. C. from Tiffin district. Enlisted in the 12th Ohio V. I., in 1863, as private, and soon after received from President LONCOLN an appointment as Aide on Gen. HUNTER's staff, with rank of Captain; he was mustered out in Lynchburgh, Va., in 1865; was appointed United States Revenue Inspector of District of Southwest Virginia in 1866. He practiced law in Lynchburgh, Va., until 1868; he located in this county in 1870. He married Miss Annie M. DAVIS, daughter of Levi DAVIS of Tiffin, Ohio, in 1866; she was born in Tiffin, Ohio, in 1843. They attend the Methodist Church; he is a Democrat in politics. He owns his residence and other valuable property in Kellogg.

Married Mary ELLIS in 1859; she was born in Indiana in 1836; have four children--Florence B., Carrie, Eugene, Eulala. Are members of the Friends' Society; Republican. He is overseer in his Church. He owns ninety-one acres of land, valued at $40 per acre.

Owns his store and dwelling, which, with his stock, is valued at $3,000; he keeps a general assortment of hardware on hand at all times. His sister, Miss A. A. PEALE resides with him; she was born in 1860 in Ohio.

Merchant and farmer; born in Wayne Co., Ky., in 1837; located in this county in 1864. Married Miss M. A. ANTLE in 1866; she was born in Morgan Co., Ill., in 1849; their children are Estella, Luthalla, Francis E. and Thomas B. He owns 277 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre, and improved property in Kellogg, valued at $2,000; he carries a stock of general merchandise of $5,000 worth. He is engaged in stock raising, principally Short-Horned cattle, and Berkshire and Poland hogs, of which he has about $2,500 worth on his farm, which is located on parts of Sec. 14 and Sec. 15 in Buena Vista Township in this county. In politics, he is a Democrat.

SAUM, S. A.
of Saum, Davis & Co., manufacturers of improved pumps; Kellogg; born in Highland Co., Ohio, in 1834; moved to Knox Co., Ill., in 1853, and located in this county in 1855. Married Miss Rachel E. ELLIS in 1856; she was born in Knox Co., Ill., in 1837; they have one child--Fred A., born Dec. 25, 1859. Are members of the Christian Church; he is a Greenbacker in politics. Enlisted in the 28th I. V. I. in 1862; mustered out in August, 1865; was in thirteen engagements with his regiment, including Champion Hills, Vicksburg, Winchester, Cedar Creek and Fisher's Hill. His company is manufacturing, as a specialty, their deep well iron cylinder pumps on an extensive scale, and have supplied a large scope of country with these pumps during the last seven years. He is a lineal descendant in a direct line from Nicholas Saum, who emigrated to this country from Germany, and located in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., several years prior to the Revolutionary War, in which one of his sons was killed. During the late war, there were six of this family on each side, one of whom was killed or died on each side.

Proprietor of a saloon and billiard hall; Kellogg; born in Alsace (formerly owned by France, now by Germany) in 1851; he came to this country and located in Muscatine, Iowa, in 1868, and located in this town in 1875. He is a Lutheran, and a Democrat in politics. He owns his billiard hall and saloon; also blacksmith shop and lots, valued at $3,000.

SHOEMAKER, C. T.
Merchant; Kellogg; born in Bedford Co., Penn., in 1837; went to California in 1857; returned in 1862; moved to Henry Co., Ill., in 1865, and located in this county, and went into business in this town in 1868. He married Miss Annie M. RESSER in 1867; she was born in Pennsylvania in 1850; they have three children-- William A., born March 19, 1870; Mable Blanch, born May 19, 1873; Philip E., born July 2, 1876. He has a large, substantial brick storehouse well filled with a general assortment of goods suitable for a first-class county trade; he owns his residence, business block and several houses and lots in town worth $10,000; also two farms, worth $8,000.

Farmer, Sec. 30, P.O. Newton; born in Somerset Co., Penn., in 1804; located in this county in 1865. Married Annie CARPMAN in 1828; they have nine children-- E. Shull, Mary D., Caroline, Job, Sam, James, Peter, Sephies L., Joel and Lutherus. Republican. He own 126 1/2 acres, valued at $30 per acre.

SIMPSON, Amos J.
Farmer, Sec. 31, P. O. Kellogg; born in Putnam Co., Ohio, in 1850; moved to Poweshiek Co., Iowa, in 1855, and located in this county in 1861. He married Miss Martha FLAUGH in 1872; she was born in Illinois in 1851; their two children are Clara M., born Oct. 5, 1873; Murty Blanch, Feb. 23, 1878. He is a Republican. He owns fifty-five acres of land in Lucas Co., Iowa, and rents eighty acres from his father in this county. His father is one of the old and prominent residents of Kellogg.

SIMPSON, J., Rev.
United Brethren Church; Kellogg; born in Muskingum Co., Ohio, in 1820; moved to Putnam Co. in 1834, and to Poweshiek Co., Iowa, in 1856; located in this county in 1863. Married Elizabeth PATRICK in 1842; she was born in Indiana in 1818; their children are Thomas J., William S., Amos J., T. L., Sarah E., George W., Wallace W. and Lincoln E. He was licensed to preach in 1853, ordained in 1860, and continued preaching up to a few years ago, when he retired owing to impaired health. He owns 610 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre, and $6,000 worth of property in Kellogg.

SIMPSON, T. L.
Farmer, Sec. 31, P. O. Kellogg; born in Putnam Co., Ohio, in 1854; moved to Poweshiek Co., Iowa, in 1855. Married Miss Sarah PENN in 1876; she was born in this county in 1857; their only child Irena Bell, was born Sept. 10, 1877. He is a Republican. He rents eighty acres adjoining his brother's, from his father, Mr. SIMPSON, of Kellogg, which he has in a high state of cultivation.

Married Mrs. Mary COOLADGE (TOMLSON) in 1860; she was born in England; they have ten children-- Clara E., Amelia A., Mary D., John F., Wyman M., Francis N., Carol H. and Burton B.; Mrs. WIGAND had two children by a former marriage--William H., and Cornelia J. He is a Greenback in politics. Owns 400 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre; he is a systematic farmer, and a public spirited citizen; his word is as good as his bond.

CALLISON, who was born in Greenbrier Co., Va., married Eliza J., Sept. 2, 1875.) They are members of the M. P. Church; he is a Republican, has occupied the positions of Road Supervisor, School Director, and Township Trustee. He owns 210 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre.
