Marengo

Population, 1,786. The Judicial seat of Iowa county, is an incorporated city located on the Iowa river and on the C., R. I. & P. Ry, in Marengo township, 35 miles n. w. of Iowa City, 85 w. of Davenport and 91 e. of Des Moines. It dates its settlement from 1846. Is lighted by electricity and gas, has an excellent system of water works, fire department, telephone facilities, an opera house, a $60,000 court house, first class hotels, 4 banks, 6 churches, a Carnegie library and a fine public school system. The press is represented by 3 weekly newspapers, the Democrat, the Republican and the Sentinel. The Business Men's Commercial League will offer all reasonable inducements for the establishment of manufacturers.
