Marengo

Population, 2007 (U. S. Census).  The judicial seat of Iowa county, is an incorporated city located on the Iowa river and on the C. R. I. & P Ry.,  35 miles northwest of Iowa City, 85 miles west of Davenport and 91 east of Des Moines.  It dates its settlement from 1846.  Is lighted by electricity, has an excellent system of water works, fire department, telephone facilities, an opera house, a $50,000 court house, first-class hotels, 3 banks, 6 churches and a fine public school system.  The press is represented by 3 weekly newspapers, the Democrat, the Herald and the Republican.  The Business Men’s Commercial League, M. A. Raney, secretary, will offer all reasonable inducements for the establishment of manufactories.  There are a number of artesian wells in the city which furnish excellent water with medicinal properties.  Mail stages daily to Koszta, Belle Plaine, Genoa Bluff, and Millersburg.  Tel., Postal, and W.
