Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript) by Pauline Lillie

                              OLD SCOTCH CEMETERY

Located Hilton
Section 12 township 80 Range 10; South of South Amana on Hy. W . 16
turn to Dean Possehl farm, then into field; or East of Conroy on F.34
third road and come in on a farm road, but gates are closed.

History
According to the 1881 Co. History, it refers to the Scotch cemetery
in Section 12, as being next to the oldest in Hilton and contains
about 60 graves; On the 1874 Atlas p. 19, shows the cemetery on both
the Jno. Shipton, and J. Cownie Sr. farms. On the 1900 Atlas on the
Henry Burgin and then on the John Cownie Jr. land this road was open
then; The 1915 Atlas mentions it on the south line of Section 12 a
little past center of section apparently on the John Cownie land. The
road is still open. The 1915 Iowa County History Vol. I, p. 63 "The
first of the men to be called by the angel of death from the Scotch
settlement who died at his home on the farm") is my opinion that he is
buried here.

This cemetery was the result of a group of people "Scotch" who moved
into the township. Little is given of them in the 1881 History, but
on page 215-and p. 63 Vol. I. Hist, of Ia. County 1915 contains many
of these families, and their life style; The settlement disappeared
and extinct for many years, with land being absorbed into other farms.

According to page 214 Vol. I History 1915 mentions that the Scotch
organized a Presbyterian Congregation about 1866-1867, and held their
first services in schoolhouses, and referred to as the Scotch School-
S House, it was located in Section 12 SW quarter, and built about 1860;
Later they went to the Presbyterian Church in Conroy or Marengo.

Condition
This cemetery is in terrible condition. It did have a high fence,
if you could get over it- then into blackberries, and tall weeds,
higher than your head. Nothing has been done, or any plans to restore
it, that I am aware of (1976- neighbor says now full of rattlesnakes)

Remarks
To reach this one has to go into the pasture, or field of crops: Since
livestock probably is here, one should check with the owner, and not
attempt to TRESPASS, for it may not be safe to go alone. At one time
the road came through here- closed for years. Better stay out of here.

Researched by Pauline Lillie- Ladora.

1978: Plans for a youth project by the Iowa County Board of Supervisors
to clean up this cemetery during the summer.
