Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript) by Pauline Lillie

                              DOVER CEMETERY
History by Pauline Lillie p. 1
                                                  (HONEY CREEK TWP)

Location
Honey Creek township 81 Range 12, Section 7; One mile from Benton
County line, and one quarter from Poweshiek Co. From Hy. 212 on
west past Hy. 21, to gravel road about ½ mile into the Sid Root
farm yard. Then on up to the top of the hill (where it was located.)

HISTORY
This area had a town plated name Dover (p. 666 Hist. 1881) Never
materialized; Small business did manage to operate for a time, in
the early days; A stage coach station on further N.W.; Cemetery was
on the I. Guthrie land of early years. (1874 Atlas.)

On 1881 History p. 671; The I Guthrie families listed in Section 647
had 6 children, Frederick, James, Annie, Elias, Mary and John T. The
cemetery lists Martha G. wife of I. Guthrie died 1892 (She was Martha
Leathers). The Ditwilers and Leathers owned land here according to
1874 Atlas of Iowa County.

At one time the children from Dover School across the road came
over and copied the stones, about 1930; Have been unable to obtain
a copy for there were at least 50 stones then, on graves. This was
told me by one of the old trustees, who was in office when it was aban-
doned. They had attempted to find descendants who were interested, and
did find one in Colorado a minister who could care less.

Condition
Has been abandoned- now completely gone. A few stones, lay around on
the hill top, some foundations show up here and there, some have roll-
ed down the sides. Cattle pasture the place, for all trees in the
once would be timber were bulldozed out and cleaned, because of the
growth, and no maintenance the cemetery went - evidently.

Remarks
No one should attempt to TRESPASS into this area without premission and
accompanied by the owner. I copied this in July 8, 1962. Have not been
there since, but was informed most stones were gone, but some could still be
located.
