We record in
this issue the death of Emily Smith which occurred November 9th. The news reached us in the midst of the
celebrations here that evening while whistles were blowing and bands playing and fireworks
shooting. We sympathize with the bereaved ones who held watch in the dimly lighted room
where slept the little bud so suddenly clipped from the parent tree.

Fred is a fine young man and has been working for John Miler at
Correctionville for some time in the jewelry business.

Wm. S. McVey
of Charter Oak, Iowa and Miss Jennie Davis of Williamsburg, Iowa were married at the home
of the bride’s sister, Mrs. A. B. Ogden, December 20th at Williamsburg. Mr. and Mrs. McVey are well known to the people of
Ida Grove. For many years both were prominent
teachers in the county.

Mr. W.O.
Griffin, the groom is a worthy young man. He
is one of the most enterprising business men and the owner of the wagon shop, near the
steam mill.

It is
over.-Dr. Drake died Friday morning at about 1 o’clock. Wednesday he passed into a comatose state and
rapidly slumbered into death. He was a native
of Pennsylvania and an excellent physician. The
doctor possessed a most liberal education and took great delight in often reading his
Latin works. He was a ripe English scholar
and thoroughly posted on all historical and political matters. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and we
suppose will be buried under Masonic Ceremonies.

Cicero H.
Drake died at his home in Ida Grove on January 4,1889, aged 48 years, 1 month, 12 days.
Dr. Drake
was born and brought up near Stroudsburg, Monroe County, PA. He was educated at an academy at Stroudsburg,
graduating with honor. ON August 20th while
in his twenty second year he enlisted in the army and was mustered in as Orderly Sergeant
of Company “G” 142 P. Vol. After
this his command was ordered to the front and barely escaped being in the battle of
Antetum. In April of 1863 he was promoted to
2nd Lt. of his company and as commanded it in the battle of Fredercksburgh. Being in Gen. Meads division, he was in the
thickest of the fight, bravely leading his men on the conflict and although mounded
severely by a piece of shell in his right leg, yet he did not desert the field of carnage. after more battles he was captured and taken with
other prisoners South and for about 20 months was held, having been confined at Libby
prison and others along the way. In May 1865
by reason of Gen. order was discharged the service with the rank of Major.
He later
attended Medical school at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, PA from which
institution he graduated with honor, later taking a Post Graduate course from the same
institute. He then located at Sciota, Monroe
County PA. He was there until 1873 when he
went to White Haven PA where he remained until 1883 then coming to Ida Grove.
He leaves a
wife and two children to mourn his loss, and to stem the current life without his careful
guardianship which he was jealous to maintain, but yet they are not alone for He who feeds
even the sparrows will be a father to the fatherless and a husband to the widow.
His body was
laid t rest in the cemetery near Ida Grove,
followed by a large concourse of his fellow, whose hearts entered into sympathy with those
left alone.

war, was thrown from a carriage on the 29th inst., at Middletown, PA and killed. Capt. Rife was a brother of Mrs. W.C. Ross of this twp. Capt.
Rife visited here several times.

the residence of the officiating clergyman, Rev. A.E. Smith, at 8 p.m. yesterday, I.H.
Rankin and Miss Mable Brown, both of Ida Grove.
The
contracting parties are known so well that eulogy from us would appear tame, Ham, who is
now 24, came to Ida Grove in the fall of 1876, and since then has been before our people,
by whom he is know as the best hearted young man in town.
The bride
who is the youngest daughter of Denis Brown, one of our leading restaurant men, is among
the most popular young ladies in the city. Her
family moved here from Dwight, Illinois about eight years ago when Mabel was 11 years old.
The ceremony
was witnessed by only S.C. Blackman and Miss Florette Pottiger, best man and bridesmaid. A few friends of the family were present later at
a party at the home of the bride’s parents

evening train for the grooms home in the golden state, bearing with them the heartfelt
good wishes of a large circle of friends.

The couple
thus happily wed are among Ida Grove’s estimable and popular young people, and are
too well and favorably known to need eulogy. “Dud”
has learned his trade here, progressing from devil to foreman, and from foreman to editor,
and his bride will not be a silent member in the new partnership, as she is also a
skillful compositor.
The ceremony
was a quiet one being witnessed by only a few intimate friends.

Mrs.
Mueller, mother in law to August Wittenberg, of Hayes
twp., died Wednesday afternoon from lung fever, aged 67 years. Her death took place while Mr. Wittenberg was
attending the funeral of Emmanuel Schroeder. She
will be buried Friday afternoon at the Nissen graveyard, Crawford County. (A correction in
the March 14 edition says she was buried at the German Lutheran Cemetery in Grant twp, not
Nissen graveyard)

friends of Mrs. W. A. Woods will feel pained to learn of her sudden death from paralysis
of the brain, at Winnipeg, where the family resided on Sunday last.
She departed
this life on March 3,1889, at Winnipeg, Manitoba, B.A. Mrs. Sarah P. Woods, wife of Wm. H.
Woods, in the 51st year of life, after a short illness.

Dropped Dead
Mike Forney,
living with his brother and father, about two miles south of Ida Grove, last Saturday met
an instantaneous death from heart disease, dropping down unexpectedly without a moment’s
warning. The disease and its advanced stage
had been recognized for sometime however. A
month or six weeks ago Forney consulted Dr. Heilman, who informed him that nothing could
be done, and that he must be prepared to die at any time, excitement or overtaxing of
strength could be dangerous. The end was
hastened some by both of these causes, as he had helped to fight a prairie fire that
threatened to approach from too close for safety on the morning of the death, his obsequies occurred Monday and conducted by
Rev. J.H. Besore.

The
community was shocked this morning by the announcement of the sudden death of Mrs. Mary
Jane Macomber, at the residence of her son, Judge Macomber, of this city. She was in usual health, except for a cold that
had troubled her considerably for a week, at the hour of retirement and up to 10 o’clock,
when the family retired, she slept peacefully. She
awakened them shortly before midnight, and was then hardly able to breathe. Her nephew, Dr. Sprague, visiting here from
Maine, pronounced it pneumonia, but had no medicine to administer to her. Dr. Heilman was hastily summoned and everything
possible was done, about 3 o’clock she was able to
breathe a little better and was sitting up, when suddenly her head dropped,
the arm upon which she rested gave way, and in a moment she expired.
Deceased was
born at Winthrop, Maine in 1819, came to Iowa in 1882, and has resided most of the time
with her eldest son in Carroll, Iowa, where the remains will be taken tomorrow for burial. She was a Christian woman, beloved by all of her
family.

Death again
has once more brought gloom to our county by the removal of the wife of Councilman John
Lancaster. On Monday, April 8, she was taken
with a chill, which was succeeded by a high fever. Medical
aid was called and the proper remedies administered for inflammation of the bowels. For the first few days the patient seemed to
improve, however, she grew worse and sank rapidly and that night realizing her end
approaching she called her husband and three children to her bedside and bade them
farewell. At 3 o’clock Monday morning
she became unconscious and died at a quarter before eight.
Rosanna
Lancaster nee Keary, was born at Green Oak, Michigan on July 31,1856, and came to Ida
County 10 years ago. Her parents still live
in Michigan, several of her brothers and sisters have homes in Chicago and one brother
James, owns a farm at Elm Grove, Calhoun County, this state. Her mother arrived on the morning train, three
quarters of an hour after her death. Her
brother, James, and sister, Julia also came to late to see her.
She was
respected by all who knew her, she was a kind and loving friend, wife and mother.
Funeral
services were held April 17 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, where Mass for the dead
was offered by Father Riordan.

the residence of the bride’s parents in Grant twp., on April 10,1889, at 3 p.m. Mr.
Arthur J. Mentor and Miss Ida M. Countryman, Rev. Thos. L. Carter officiated, from Battle
Creek.
Mr. Mentor
is an energetic young farmer in Ida County, to which he came from Wisconsin, his native
state four years ago. The bride is on of Iowa’s brightest girls and
has spent most of her life in Ida County, pursuing the high calling of school teacher for
six terms. Both bride and groom were
converted during the revival held in Grant last November and united with the M.E. Church.

The death of
Mrs. J.W. Lewis last week Wednesday was peculiarly sad. The accident in which her little
son had his hand mangled in some machinery, last summer, preyed upon her mind a great
deal, and she never fully recovered from the nervous shock.
Her last illness was of several weeks duration, following child birth. The little babe and two other children are left
motherless. Mrs. Lewis was the wife of one of
our most esteemed farmers to whom the bereavement is great. She was a lovable woman, and a large circle of
friends mourn her death. Services were
conducted by the Presbyterian Church and Rev. Keeler, on Thursday and was largely

takes pleasure in chronicling the union of this worthy couple. The groom has for three years been in charge of
the station at Arthur, and is a young man of fine business qualifications, genial
disposition and exemplary habits. The bride
is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Churchill, and is well known as highly
accomplished young lady.
The happy
couple were the recipients of many handsome presents.

year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Harvey, 4 1/2
miles northwest of town, died of tubercular meningitis, Wednesday morning,
after an illness of about two weeks. Rev.
Keeler will conduct funeral services today at the house at 9 a.m.

We regret to
announce the sad news of the death and burial of Mrs. J. Schroeder, wife of Jurgen
Schroeder, of Morgan twp, since your last issue, after a long and severe illness. Mrs. Schroeder passed away last Friday forenoon,
at 10 o’clock, leaving a devoted husband and four little children to mourn the loss
of a loving wife and mother. She was burden
on Sunday, May 5 at the Nissen cemetery. The
funeral was conducted by Rev.Hermann.

of Grant twp., He passed away last Thursday afternoon, after an illness of about a week,

morning, May 20, of membranous croup, Earl Ernest, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Schiller, aged
7 years, 3 months, 11 days.
The grim
reaper has entered another home and torn away a loved inmate. After an illness of only a few days, little Earl
passed away. The funeral was conducted by
Rev. Charlton of the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon, there being not even
standing room for the large congregation of sympathizing friends. Two primary school classes and teachers attended
in a body and the pupils brought offerings of flowers to their departed mate.

Christine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hoagland died on Wednesday evening, May 15 of
quick consumption contracted last February, since which time she has failed rapidly. She was an accomplished young lady of about twenty
years, and will be missed by a large circle of friends.

Andrew
Gavin, died at his residence in Wheeler twp., Sac County on Friday May 24th of stomache
troubles. He was born in the parish of
Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland and while a youth emigrated to America with his
parents, settling in Jones County, where the latter still lives. About six years ago he purchased a farm in Sac
County on which he and his family moved. Here
he was respected by all who knew him. The
funeral took place Sunday from the Catholic Church at Odebolt with Father Pechong
officiating, and the remains were interred in the Odebolt Cemetery.

The death of
little Ruth Schiller on Friday evening, only ten days after that of Earl, was one of those
sad occurrences which call forth the fullest sympathy of a community. She was a bright little child of six years, such a
short time before in the bloom of perfect health, it was hard to realize that death had
claimed her. The disease was pronounced
undeveloped measles, complicated with diphtheria, and health officer Moorehead being
notified of the presence of the dangerous contagion, had notice posted of the same. Two other children lying ill at the time are now
quite recovered, diphtheria developing but lightly in their cases. The obsequies of Ruth were quietly
conducted, Sunday, Rev. Charlton officiated at the house.

Another case
of the measles followed by lung fever, ended fatally, Monday in the death of Miss Lydia,
daughter of Rev. L.C. Steffler, the German Methodist Minister. She was about 12 years of age, and her loss is a
severe blow to the family, who have resided here a short time, and in the sickness of the
whole household suffered the isolation of others.

Cemetery.

again knocked at the door of Mrs. Gleason and taken away her husband. Elisha Gleason was a good man and always ready to
lend a helping hand, and the people of Fairview will miss his welcome smile and extended
hand of friendship. Funeral services were
held at the M.E. Silver Creek Church in Cherokee County on June 6. Burial was in the Silver Creek Cemetery.

A very sad
accident occurred at the ball grounds Tuesday evening.
At the close of the game a number bound for the old town made a rush to
climb onto John Hawk’s dry, among the others, L. Hitchcock’s 9 year old son
Romeo. In some was he slipped and fell
between the wheel and the box, was carried part way round on the former and squeezed
against the brake, falling Down in front of the
wheel, which would have passed over his body in a second more had not Fred Mitchell
managed to pull him away in the nick of time. The
boy managed to get up, but staggered and it was found he could neither stand nor speak, having received internal
injuries. Dr. Graeser was called in, but as
usual in these cases little could be done, and after passing a bad night the little fellow
breathed his last on Wednesday morning. The
loss of a child under such circumstances is peculiarly sorrowful, and this terrible blow
to the family excites the sympathy of all. Funeral
services were held at the M.E. Church at 2 o’clock this afternoon.

July 7,1889, Kent son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay D. Miller, aged 7 years, 9 months, 2 days.
Kent’s
illness was long and painful, about seven
weeks. He was taken down with the measles and
suffered a severe attack, ending in lung fever. He
never rallied, the disease spread rapidly taking the form of quick consumption and
finishing its cruel work. Kent bore his
suffering with patience and fortitude. He was
naturally a thoughtful child and possessed a gifted, unusually developed mind that gave
great promise for the future.
The funeral
took place on Monday at 4 p.m. from the M.E. Church, where impressive services were
conducted by Elder Whitfield, Rev. Wm Whitfied and Rev. A. E. Smith.

It becomes
our sad news to announce the death of Richard McGuire of Douglas twp., who departed this
life on Sunday evening, January 19, at 9 o’clock.
He was born
in Limerick County, Ireland in 1816 and came to New York in 1849, and to Iowa in 1854, he
being one of the pioneers of Scott County. From
there he went to Clinton County in 1865 and in 1883 to Ida County. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his
death.
He had been
in declining health for some time but bore his suffering with Christian resignation. He fortified with the Catholic Church of which he
was a true member. The funeral took place
Wednesday morning, Rev. Quirk celebrated the mass at Holstein, after which the remains
were taken to Ida Grove for burial.

this life, James Higgins at his home in Sac County on the 26th day of January, 1890; aged
about 80 of LaGrippe.
Brother
Higgins was born in the state of Maryland, from there went to Missouri, where in 1841 he
married Miss Ann Higgins, the marriage was a happy one.
In 1846 he
came to Iowa where he secured a farm in Scott County.
Two years ago he came to Sac County, where he died, having purchased on the
finest quarter sections in the county. He
leaves a widow and eight children, four sons and four daughters. He had been the father of 12 children, but 4
passed across the river before him.
Brother
Higgins embraced religion many years ago. The
funeral was largely attended on the 28th from his home and was laid to rest in the
Schaller cemetery, awaiting the resurrection of our Lord.

It is our
painful duty to record the work of that dread messenger death, who has visited the home of
one of our most respected citizens and plucked from the family circle one of its brightest

of a few months has this family been grief stricken and caused to mourn the loss of two
sons and brothers who were in their midst.
Funeral
services held tomorrow at three o’clock in the afternoon at the Presbyterian church,
when the remains will be laid in their resting place next toe his brother Frank.

Schaeffer, a well known Miller died yesterday morning.
Mr. Isaac
Schaeffer one of our most aged and well known citizens of this place, died at his home on
North Union Street at 3 o’clock yesterday morning of an illness of rheumatism, which
ended in a complication of diseases.
He was born
in Lancaster County, near Elizabethtown on November 20,1813. He worked no a farm for his father until he was
grown. During leisure moments her learned the
millwright and carpentry trade. In 1837 he married Miss Maria Imboden of Lebanon County,
with whom he had two daughters, one dying in infancy, and the other the late Mrs. Rudloph
Kaylor, of South Hanover twp. His wife died
in 1840 and later in 1840 married Miss Anna Brestle of Londonderry twp. In the spring of 1848 he moved to Swantra Hill,
where he worked until 1851 and then to Mt. Vernon and became a section boss during the
laying of the railroad. In 1854 he rented
Trout’s Mill, owned by Rev. A Weiting where he remained five years. In 1868 he bought the Stouffer Mill in Lower
Paxton twp, were he lived for 15 years.
His second
wife and five children survive him; Ephram, Franklin and Monroe of PA; Aaron, the present
mayor of Ida Grove; Mrs. John Farling of Chambers Hill.
He also leaves a brother and sister, Peter near Elizabethtown, and Mrs. H.W. Graybill of Mt. Joy.
Funeral will
take place from the residence on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. from old St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church with burial in the Middleton Cemtery.
