** Ross served with British forces. Born and living in Scotland when the war broke out, Ross held an ensign's commission in the British army and was called into active service with the Forty-second Regiment, known as the "Black Watch". Per source #1 below, Ross had evidently been loyal to his oath as a soldier, but had not been in favor of Kng George the Third's attempt to conquer the colonies. Disenchanted with the British government, he returned to America after the war, where his father's two brothers lived in MD.
