BRITT
The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in November, 1878, through the instrumentality and labors of the Rev. Z. C. Bradshaw, now of Belmond, Wright County. The following parties were included among the original members; K.K. Liquin, William Wright, C. William Pritchard, Andrew Anderson, G. Devenpeck and C.C. Way. The first board of trustees was composed of the following gentlemen: K.K. Liquin, William Pritchard, Andrew Anderson, G. Davenpeck and C.C. Way. The Church edifce was erected in 1881, at a cost probably of $1,500, and is a plain, substantial frame building. The Present officers of the society are: K.K. Liquin, W.W. Wright, Carol Graves, Joesph Osborne, Mrs. R.G. Hill, Mrs. Eliza Liquin, Mrs. Sarah Morrison and W. tl. Huston. The memebership at the present writing (1883) is thirty-two, and is increasing gradually. The Church is reported to the conference as being in a very prosperous condition and with rich promise of future growth and usefulness. A fine Sabbath school is attached to this Church of which William H. Huston is superintendant; Nellie Morrison, treasurer; Mert Morrison, libraian, and Charles Brown, secretary. This school has an average attendance of about sixty scholars and teachers, and is a useful adjunct to the Church.

WRIGHT FAMILY
Tired and worn from a trip that started from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, on May 22, 1879, to two covered wagons drawn by two horses each, this family of ten people disembarked at Britt on June 24. They immediately pitched a tent back of the building long known as the Treganza Furniture store. In early evening they were greeted by one of the most severe electrical storms of the season. The Iowa mud, the waiving prairie grass, an infant town growing up in the West, all in comparison to the thriving city in the East, which they had left behind were no welcoming aspects to these early pioneers. But here they were and here they stayed.
Shannon Wright's ancestor's originally came from Canada. His father, W.W. Wright, was born in New York State and his mother in Pennsylvania. The couple was married in Mt. Vernon, Ohio and here their thirteen children were born. One of them, Shannon, a boy of seventeen, who was born in a log cabin had been ill for quite some time, suffering from ague, more commonly known today as malaria fever. The family physician advised that he must be taken to another climate. So in 1877, W.W. Wright bought two hundred acres of land four miles of Weley from a close friend of the family, who was a land agent in Ohio. This agent advised the Wrights that this territory might some day become a great country.
Accompanying the parents to Britt besides their son Shannon, were Will, Dave, John, Terry, Hannah, Elfie and Emma. The other five children were married and remained in the states of Ohio and Michigan. Hannah later became the wife of H.H. Ellsworth and Emma married Pete Jensen, a buthcer.
The first year the Wrights came here, they broke eight acres of raw prairie, built a barn with a lean-to, and made acyclone cave. Shortly after their arrival in the county, their best horse died. They baught two cows for fifteen dollars each and another horse for about forty dollars. Since they brought a large quanity of home-cured pork with them when they came, they did not buy any pigs.
Shannon lived in the lean-to at the farm and batched. It was he who broke all the sod, using four horses on the plow. There was nothing else to do on the farm the first year after the buildings had been completed except to plow. There was nothing else to do on the farm the year after the buildings had benn completed except to plow. The family pitched a tent in Britt when they first came, and had planned to live in it until they got their house completed, but due to the high prevailing winds that seemed never to cease blowing, and no windbreaks, they had to abandon their plans for living in the tent. For a short time during the summer, they lived in the new town school building. This was in 1879, and the building was not quite completed on the insode. In the fall, their own home was completed enough so they could move in. This was the Wright home, on the corner of Third Avenue Southeast and Foruth Street Southeast, until the death of the parents. It is now the home of Mrs. E. Frances Gast. When this house was being plastered, one of the Wright boys wrote the figures "1879: in green plaster and the interior of this house stillbears that date.
The Wright family sold their farm in 1882. Since this was a haying community, the men found plenty of work pressing hay. Shannon worked at this type of work several years. Many times, the men returning home would become lost in the darkness or in a storm, There were no fences, no crops, no ditches, no bridges, no trees or quideposts of any kind. Blizzards were terrible and lasted for days at a time, coming up very suddenly and cathcing people unaware, often some distance from home. Farmers returning home by sled could detect getting off the road in a blizzard when their horses would slip from the solid snow track into the snft snow - that is, if enough travelers had kept to one track while traveling. Families at home would set a light in the window to direct members home. If the sky was clear a lost traveler could find his directions by the big dipper, the sun, moon, or some guiding star.
Shannon related the story about the time he and the late John Love and George Fillenwarth were doing some grain stacking two miles southwest of Britt. They worked late to finish a stack, as the sky indicated rain. It was dark when they started for Britt that late summer night. John Love was at the lines driving and after a long time, they arrived back at their starting point. Mr. Wright and Mr. Fillenwarth jumped out of the wagon and began huntin for a breaking furrow. Walking with the team and with the wagon following, they found their way in Britt.
During Britt's baby days, crime ran rampant. During the first year there were no law officers, but finally Britt hired a marshal, and as Mr. Wright puts it, the marshal was often found hiding under the sidewalk, which was built on stilts. Mr. Wright tells of one man with a butcher knife chase another man around a wood pile. Someone had imbibed too freely. In the early days it was "stab, knock'em flat, lay'em out and haul'em off to the cemetery".
At the time the M. & St. L. Railroad was put through, Shannon Wright's parents ran a boarding house in their home, called "The Wright Eating House". Mrs. Wright would often put up as amny as 125 lunches per day for the railroad men who were working on the grade. Shannon helped with the grading also, and after the trains began running through, he and his brother, Joe, pumped water for the trains. The first water tank was loacated east of Britt where the railroad bridge spand the ditch. While these men took care of their task at the pump house, they were entertained by the bittern bird, more commonly known to th early pioneers as the devil's pump, the thunder pump or the slough pump. These birds, with bodies mounted on long legs and with their long necks outstretched, would measure two and one-half feet high. These water birds, notable for the peculiar sounds they uttered, have diminished with the increase of population.
After a year or two, the railroad company put down a well in Britt and also erected a water tank and some large coal sheds.
Shannon Wright and his brothers worked in the haying industry for a number of years, and Shannon's haying career was terminated when the Frank Rogers hay barn and press burned in the middle eighties. Following the disaster, Mr. Wright cared for the Evergreen Cemetery at Britt and served as sexton for many years. He was the first man to clean up the cemetery and mow the grass with a lawn mower. Sahnnon Wright died in 1950.
W.W. Wright, died in Britt at his home in 1886, and Mrs. Wright became so homesick for her children in the East that she went there for a visit the following year, and while visiting in Michigan, died very suddenly. This was her first trip east since 1879, when the family left that beautiful city of Mt. Vernon with its population of 4,000 inhabitants and its paved streets of brick. The body was returned to Britt for burial in Evergreen Cemetery beside her husband.

Obituary St. Johns, Michigan March 1, 1917
LESTER C. WRIGHT, WAR VETERAN, DEAD
PARTICIPATED IN FORTY-FIVE ENGAGEMENTS-WAS HIGHLY ESTEEMED CITIZEN
Lester C. Wright was born in Knox county, Ohio, oct. 9, 1844, and passed to his reward, Febraury 24, 1917, being aged 72 years, 4 months and 15 days. The subject of this sketch was born of a sturdy and honest parentage and grew to manhood in his native county on a farm. He was indebted to the district schools for a common school education and has always added to his knowledge by observation, reading and experience, thus keeping in touch with the world's progress. Although only seventeen years of age he heard his country's call for aid and in August, 1861, volunteered in a regiment of Ohio Infantry. He was a brave soldier and was in forty-five regular engagments under Grant and Sherman.
On December 28, 1865 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Huff of Knox County, Ohio, who together have labored and reared a large and proserous family. In the fall 1873, he moved with his family and settled on a farm one half mile east of Page school house, afterwards purchasing the farm which he owns now. He commenced on this farm when it was all timber, but by courage and conviction and an ever-abiding spirit of hopefulness of the Master, he changed the wild nature to a beautiful home which will now benefit his widow and children.
In 1904, being broken down by manual labor, he engaged in the mercantile business at Homestead for a while and then removed to Eureka, Mich., where he has resided until the sommons "To Come Home".
Unto his marriage have been born eight children of whom six are living, viz: Mrs. Esther Larkins, of Lansing; Mrs. Anna Hyde, of Homestead, Mich.; William and Virgil east of Eureka; Ernest Wright of ovid and John Wright of Detroit. He also leaves a devoted widow, brothers and twelve grandchildren to mourn his loss.
He has been a member of Masonic fraternity for a number of years. Soon after the civil war he was converted to the Christian religion and no one in the community has been more devoted to the work of the Master than he. Whether on the farm or in the store or in his last days of suffering, he has been a shining exponent of the Christian faith. He has been a member of the Eavngilical Church for many years and has given of his time and means towards the support of the gospel. He stood firm in support of whatever he believed was right and had a deep and abiding charity for others who needed moral assistance or material aid.
So as the day with its morning of hope and promise, its noontide of activity, its evening of completed and successful effort, so has the departed been an exemplary husband, a loving father, a genial friend, and an unselfish Chrsitian. His life was gentle and the elemnets so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world. "This was a man."
The funeral services were cionducted by Rev. Schurer of Niles, Michigan, at the E.V. Church, Eureka, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Eureka cemetery.

Double Funeral Today for Mrs. Wright, 60, and Mrs. Dale Dunham, 35
Stunned by the second double fatality to be visited upon their community within the short space of 10 days, the people of Elsie and vicinity are this (Thursday) afternoon attending last rites for Mrs. William Wright, 60, of Elsie, and her daughter, Mrs. Dale Dunham, 35, who were fatally burned shortly after noon Sunday, Nov. 1, in an explosion at the Dunham home, three miles northwest of the village on the Luther Ranney farm in Duplain township. This funeral service is being held just one week after the burial of Dr. Alton B. Simonson and Francis N. Frye, prominent Elsie men and victims of an automobile accident Oct. 29.
Mrs. Wright and her husband, a retired farmer, had driven into the county to spend the day with their daughter and her family. The tragedy occurred when Mrs. Dunham poured kerosene on live coals in the cook stove perparatory to getting the Sunday dinner. Exploding with sufficient force to crack the stove and burst the can which Mrs. Dunham held in her hands, the gas hurled the flaming oil over the unfortunate woman, igniting her clothing in a flash. Mrs. Wright, who was also partly in the path of the flames, attempted to aid her daughter but in a second or two both women were terribly burned. They were rushed by ambulance to Clinton Memorial Hospital where Mrs. Dunham died at 5 p.m. and her mother's death occurred at 9 o'clock the next morning. Double funeral services are to take place (Continued on page 4, column 1)

Anita Tribune, Thursday, March 23, 1933
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wilsom
Mary Elizabeth Wright, daughter of Wm. and Margaret Wright, was born November 5, 1848, at Mt. Vernon, Ohio. After an illness of nearly three months , which was borne with the greatest of christian faith and fortude, she entered triumphantly into the heavenly home, passing away at her home in Anita on March 17th, at the age of 84years 8months and 12 days.
On March 10, 1867, she was united on marriage to Wm. Benson. To this union four children were born, Curtis W. Benson of Anita, Mrs. Mae Wilson of Randoplh, Nebraska, Ellsworth Benson of McLean, Nebraska, and Burgess Benson, deceased. Mr. Benson died September 23, 1880, at Mechanlesville, Iowa.
On April 10, 1882, at Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Benson was united in marriage to Wm. G. Wilson of Anita. To this union one child was born, Mrs. Eva Koob, who lived with and tenderly and lovingly cared for her mother in her declining years. Mr. Wilson passed away October 6, 1929.
When a girl eleven years of age the confessed Christ as her Savior, was baptised and united with the methodist Episcopal church, and has been an exemplary follower of Christ. Her cheerfulness and her joyous disposition bought gladness into every place she came and others felt the power of her christian optimism. She was a realous worker in the missionary societies, the ladies aides society of the church, and she was a life member of the W.C.T.U. She loved to work with children and the little folks in her neighborhood knew her as "Grandma Wilson."
In the last few years, ill health prevented her from keeping up her church activities but it never lessened her faith in Christ nor her love for His service.
During her illness those who watched by her bedside and those who visited with her was impressed by the sweet patience, the sublinme faith, and the christian fortitude with which she met these trying days.
In the last hours, knowing she was sooin to leave her loved ones, she beckoned them one by one to her bedisde and bade them an affectionate farewell. Her going was as she had lived, but the influence of her godly life will live on, inspiring who knew her, to a greater real in the christian work.
The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon in the Church of CXhrist, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. M. J. Rarick. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery.
Music for the services was furnished by Mrs. G.M. Adair, Mrs. H. R. Redburn, Guy Rasmussern and A.B. Stone, with Mrs. Erie Osen at the piano. Songs rendered were "In the City Four Square", "Face to Face" and "Down the Valley". Pallbearers were C.H. Bartley, B.D. Forshay, Robert Scott, James Rickel, S.G. Jewett and Dr. C. E. Harry.

Mrs. Ellsworth was only twenty five years old when she came to Britt. She lived to be 71 years, 4 months, and 7 days old - spending more than sixteen years of her life as a citizen of Britt. She was possessed of those kindly characteristics that mark the early pioneer, a socialbility of the home and an earnest desire to serve her family and her friends. A member of the Methodist church she lived a christian life doing good wherever she could. She will be greatly missed by her husband and family and a large circle of close friends.
Hannah Jane Wright was born in Knox County, Ohio. May 9th, 1853. She came west to town with her parents arriving in Britt in 1878. On Feb. 3, 1881, she was married to H.H. Ellsworth. AN OLD TIMER BIDS FAREWELL
Was Sheriff, d eputy Sheriff, Leading Auctioneer in Hancock Co., for Many Years
Horace Herman Ellsworth, (familiarly known as Herm Ellsworth) has gone forth into the land from whence no traveler returns. he died at his home in Britt from the infirmities of old age at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, december 21, 1933. His birth is recorded as January 14, 1853, so at death he had attained an age of 80 years, 11 months, and 7 days. His birthplace was Vermillion, LaSalle County, Illinois.
Coming to Hancock County in 1878 he settled at Bailey's Grove, southeast of Britt. The new town of Britt was being established and in 1880 he moved to town. Miss hannah Jane Wright worked in the home of Philander S. Ellsworth (his Father) and it was there Herm made the acquantance of his future wife. They were married at Concord on Feb. 23, 1881; started housekeeping in Britt, reared their family here and lived happily through a long and useful life. Mrs. Ellsworth passed away on Sept. 23, 1924, since which time he has lived with his dughter, Mrs. Clarence Hartzell and son Art.
The children of H.H. and Hannah Ellsworth were Arthur and Mrs. C. L. Hartzell of Britt, Harrison another son , died July 7, 1925, and one died in infancy. Mr. Ellsworth is the last to die of a family of eleven children. Surviving grandchildren are Norman and Henry Ellsworth, Huxley, Iowa; Elaine, Zola, Betty, Bud and Frances Hartzell, Britt.
Mr. Ellsworth was crippled and found it necessary to go on crutches most of his life, but this did not keep him from being a hard worker and a useful man to his family, his town, his county, for he served as the first town clerk of Britt. In later years he acted as deputy sheriff, Sheriff, trustee and town councilman and was faithful in the performance of his duties. But perhaps he will be best remebered for his work as auctioneer and it was in this work that he earned the title of Colonel. As long as health would permit he pursued his work, covering a large territory - in fact at one time he cried sales in Hancock, Wright, Kossuth and Winebago counties as well was his reputation built up as an auctioneer.
Funeral service were conducted on Sunday afternoon at the home, the Rev. G. W. Eggleston preaching the sermon. Interment was in Everegreen cemetery, Britt.

Arthur Ellsworth Finishes This Life
Last week this paper chronicled the serious illness of Arthur Ellworth, well known life-long resident of Britt. Today we chronicle his passing. His death brought rest and peace to one who had spent many months in hospitals enduring the months of pain. Probably no one shall ever know the agony he withstood. Yet through it all he exhibited a patience seldom seen and all of his misfortunes and disabilities did not rob him of his cheerful disposition or make of him a mournful pa__________.
His outstanding charcteristic was his cheerfulness under all circumstances, and his way of seeing the sun behind the clouds and of letting one know that he expected it to shine out brightly tomorrow, was commendable.
Arthur Ellsworth was the first man that Lou Roberts spoke to when he came to Britt. Arthur was driving a bus at the time and met the night M. & St. L. train. He had been told to watch for Lou and fulfilled the job by making a friend.
Arthur Augustus Ellsworth was born a son to Herman and Hannah Jane Ellsworth at Britt, Iowa, on January 17, 1882. At death on February 21, 1939, he had reached an age of 57 years, 1 month and 5 days. All his life was spent here and had a wide acquaintance. His parents and one brother, Harrison, preceded him in death. The only living memeber of that family is his sister in Britt, Mrs. C. L. Hartzell, who had been carrying on a watchful vigil at his bedside at the hospital for the past two weeks. When he passed, Mr. Hartzell, Bud, Betty and Zola Hartzell were present. The survivors are one sister and her husband, five nieces and three nephews.
The funeral is being held this (Thursday) afternoon at the Wigton-Russ Funeral Home at 2 o'clock, the Rev. C. N. McMillan in charge. The body will lie in a grave in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery.

F. WRIGHT KILLED
By Live Wire-Rasturing Cattle Near Beadle's Crossing on M.U.,T.
PHONE POLES BLOWN DOWN
Wires Coming in Contact with Trolly Wire  Henry O'Dell Also Has Narrow Escape
Fred Wright was instantly killed Wednsday afternoon about 3 o'clcok by an electric current, while pasturing some cattle along the road near Beadle's crossing, on the eclectric line.
The accident was caused by two Union Telephone pole being blown down, the wires coming in contact with the trolley wire and a cable of the Farmers' line and a wire fence.
Mr. Wright was standing in the middle of the wagon road and it is thought that the wires must have struck him in falling. When assistance came he was laying across the web of live wires.
Sheriff Cramer and Dr. H.D. Squair drove out to the scene of the accident, but there was nothing that could be done for the unfortunate man.
Henry O'Dell, a brother-in-law of Mr. Wright, also received a bad shock, when he took hold of a chain, which was around a cow's neck and stepped on one of the wires. Mr. Lewis, who lives on the corner saw the danger and grabbed Mr. O'Dell by the coat and pulled him away.
The farm fence was so heavily charged with electricity that the posts near by were set on fire.

Another Pioneer Passes This Life
Death came to S.K. Wright at his home in Britt early Friday morning March 3. He had been in failing health for many months. At death he had reached the age of 87 years, 10 months and 17 days.
Funeral services were held at the Osman Funeral Chapel, Monday afternoon, March 6, at 2 o'clock with the Rev. J. S. Phipps, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, in charge of the last rites. Burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.
Mr. Wright was born in a log cabin at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, April 15, 1862 a son to Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Wright. He is the last of a family of thirteen. Being in poor health in his early years, the parents decided to bring him west. The father bought four hundred acres of land northeast of Wesley in 1877. On May 22, 1879, the parents and eight of the children  started west in two covered wagons drawn by two horses each. Having followed prairie trails for four weeks the family arrived in Britt on June 24, a town then only nine years old. "Shan", then a boy of 17, batched it on the farm where he broke eighty acres of raw prairie the first year. The family lived in Britt. In 1882 the Wrights sold the farm and the men worked in the haying industry. Mr. Wright worked for Frank Rogers until the Rodgers' hay barn and press burned in the late 80's. Following the disaster Mr. Wright took work at the Evergreen Cemetery at Britt and served as sexton for many years, being the first man to clean up the cemetery and mow the grass with a lawn mower. His last work was that of a salesman for a monument company.
Mr. Wright was married to Miss Agust Stock in 1885. Five children were born in this union. One son died in infancy. Sadie and Lucian also preceded the parents in death. George Wright of Waterloo and Edith (Mrs. C.O. Brewster) of Britt, survive the passing of the father, as also does his wife, Mrs. Molly Olson Wright, whom he married a number of years ago.
Others missing this departed loved one include five stepchildren; Otto Olson, Mason City; Ruth Ella Peterson and Ruby Shannon, Davenport, Ia.; Ione and Ruseel Olson, Seattle, Wash.; also four grandchildren, and many other realtives and friends.
