  • 1920 Hamilton County Iowa census information for Liberty Township shows Knut O. Roe, born about 1853 in Norway, immigrated to U.S. about 1875 and his wife Anna, born about 1859 in Norway, immigrated to U. S. about 1858.

  • From page 49, Early Days of Hamilton County Iowa by Lyon – "Lincoln Township – ‘Airy Hill Farm’, consisting of the north half of section 27, was owned by Lewis E. Tyler."
  • 1910 Hamilton County Iowa census information for Lincoln Township shows Lewis E. Tyler, age 54, born about 1856 in Illinois with wife Isabelle J. age 49 born Illinois and Ermel (maybe be Ernest) B. Tyler, son age 21 born Illinois, Irwin H. Williams? stepson age 18 born Illinois, Malcolm R. Tyler son age 8 born Illinois, Lydia Larson niece age 21 born Iowa and Oscar Larson hired man age 19 born Iowa.
  • Lewis E. Tyler is listed in the 1920 Hamilton County Iowa census information as a widow living in Ellsworth, Iowa with son Malcolm and stepson Irvin H. Williams and his wife? Gertie M. Williams.
  • Genealogy information found indicates that Lewis Edward Tyler was born in 1855 in LaSalle County, Illinois and married (1) Sarah Ann Halverson and had children Della E., Albie L., Royal C. and Ernest B. Tyler. He married (2) Isabelle I. Williams in 1897 in LaSalle County, Illinois and had at least one child Malcolm R. Tyler. The family probably moved to Iowa sometime after 1902. Records indicate that Lewis Edward Tyler died in 1924 in LaSalle County, Illinois

  • Cass Township – 160 acres in Section 21, T89, R25, 240 acres in Section 28, T89, R25 and 155.6 acres in Section 33, T89, R25.
  • From page 90, Early Days of Hamilton County, Iowa by Lyon – re Kendall Young. "His native state had a boundary dispute with the province of New Brunswick, for which the militia was called out and the Arrostock (sic) war ensued, with Young serving some two months as a private. For his services he was paid $18 and given two land warrants, one for 40 and the other for 120 acres of land. He held these land warrants until he finally came to Webster City, and the 40 acres warrant he took up in Cass township, while the 120 was taken up in Kossuth county. He later sold this and bought land adjoining his 40 acres in Cass township, which he developed into a highly productive farm, christened the 'Aroostock Farm'. "
  • Kendall Young’s estate established the Kendall Young Library in Webster City, Hamilton County, Iowa.

  • 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Hamilton County Iowa census records show Ellen A. Burleson as a widow living with parents Benjamin F. and Catherine A. Snook. They lived on Bank Street in Webster City, Iowa.
  • 1918 Hamilton County Iowa Plat Book shows ownership of 80 acres in Section 22 and 80 acres in Section 27 in Cass Township.

Ash Grove Farm - Johnson Latta

  • Fremont Township – 320 acres in Section 23, T89, R26
  • Johnson Latta was born 1846 in Ohio and died 18 April 1907. He is buried in the Catholic cemetery, Duncombe, Webster County, Iowa
  • 1870 Jackson County Iowa census, VanBuren Township, he is listed as a farm laborer, age 24 with his parents John and Mary Latta along with siblings George and Seneca?.
  • 1880 Hamilton County Iowa census, Fremont Township, lists Johnson Latta, age 34 born about 1846 in Ohio as a farmer with wife Lizzie age 29 born Iowa, daughter Mary age 6 born Iowa, daughter Agnus age 4 born Iowa, daughter Rose age 1 born Iowa and laborer Daniel Ceeley age 48 born Pennsylvania and laborer Lewis Fairchild age 14 born Iowa.
  • 1895 Iowa State Census shows this family living in Duncombe, Webster County, Iowa
  • 1900 Webster County Iowa census, town of Duncombe, Washington Township shows Johnson Latta age 54, born about 1846 as Bank President. Listed with him is wife Elizabeth age 45 and daughter Rose age 20 a bank clerk.
  • 1888 Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Webster and Hamilton Counties Iowa, page 358 – "Johnson Latta, section 23, Fremont Township, was born in Ashland County, Ohio, March 14, 1846, a son of John and Mary (White) Latta, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Maryland. When he was a child his parents moved to Jackson County, Iowa, and there he was reared and educated. In 1873 he came to Hamilton County and located on the farm where he now lives, which he had bought the year before, and had twenty-five acres broke. He built a part of his present residence that year, completing it in 1878. His 160 acres are now under cultivation, and his farm is one of the best in Fremont township. Mr. Latta was married February 15, 1872, to Miss Lizzie O’Neal, a daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (McMahon) O’Neal. They have three children – Mary E., Agnes L. and Rosa. In politics Mr. Latta is a Democrat. He is a prominent citizen of his township, and has served as trustee, making a faithful and conscientious servant of his fellow citizens."

Templer of Hamilton County and State of Iowa, the owner of the following described farm, situated in Hamilton County and State of Iowa, to-wit: The W ½ of the SW ¼ and the W 2/3 of the NE ¼ of the SW ¼ of Section 15, Township 86 North, Range 24, West of the 5th P. M., Iowa. Containing 106 2/3 acres, more or less does hereby adopt the name of Ash Grove Farm to apply to the above described farm. Signed this 31st day of May A.D. 1916. Signed: George H. Templer
  • 1910 Hamilton County Iowa census lists George Templar, age 33, born about 1877 in Iowa living in Ellsworth Township with wife Elena and daughter Mary.

Ash Grove Stock Farm - L. N. Mason (Leonard Nelson Mason)

  • Leonard Nelson “Len” or L. N. Mason was born 1887 in Webster City, Hamilton County, Iowa to Bridgeman C. Mason and Clara Olmstead Mason. His grandparents were among the first settlers of Hamilton County Iowa and were born in Massachusetts. He married Irene Merrill, daughter of W. N. and Sophia Merrill. Mr. Merrill was the proprietor of the Willson Hotel in Webster City, Iowa.
  • In 1929 he moved with his wife and children to Blandford, Hampden County, Massachusetts to farm. His children include Merrill Mason, Robert Mason, Elizabeth Mason Finlayson and Maris Jack Mason.
  • L. N. Mason was active in reestablishing the Hamilton County Fair, serving on the Board of Directors in 1918 & 1921, President in 1919 & 1920 and Secretary from 1925 to1928. He exhibited Duroc Jersey swine, Shropshire sheep, Percheron horses and ducks at the fairs.

Ash Grove Stock Farm, L. N. Mason, Breeder, Hamilton County, Iowa

This advertising sign for L. N. Mason was painted on the south wall of the Sales Pavilion located on the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The ad was painted between 1919 & 1928 and is still in good condition. The Hamilton County Iowa Fair Foundation is currently raising funds to restore and refurbish the Sales Pavilion and Stock Barn built in 1919.

  • 1918 World War I Draft Registration Card shows Ole Adolph Thoreson, farmer, Ellsworth, born 18 May 1873, listing wife Amanda. Tall height, medium build, brown eyes, brown hair.
  • 1920 Hamilton County Iowa census, Lincoln township, shows Ole A. Thoreson age 46 born about 1874 in Illinois of Norwegian parents, farmer, with wife Amanda age 42 born Illinois, son Jesse age 21 born Iowa, office worker, son Curtis O. age 15 born Iowa, son Idris A. age 11 born Iowa, son Willie H. age 6 born Iowa, son Ralph L. age 3 born Iowa, unnamed child age 9/12 months and laborer Horace Taylor age 23.
  • 1930 Hamilton County Iowa census, Lincoln Township shows additional children, Donald born about 1923 and Ruth born about 1927, in addition to Ray Thoreson, lodger, born about 1903.

Auckland Farm - P. L. Peterson

  • Liberty Township - 160 acres in Section 11, T88N, R24
  • 1920 Hamilton County Iowa Census shows Peter L. Peterson, age 52, born about 1868 in Iowa living in Liberty Township with wife Hanna and children Carl R. and Louisa. Other known children included Truman, Hendrick and John.
  • Peter Lewis Peterson was born near Randall, Hamilton County Iowa in 1868. His parents were natives of Norway. He married (1) Rena James (1867-1904) and (2) Hannah [--?--]. See pages 306-308 (Vol II) of Lee’s 1912 History of Hamilton County Iowa as reprinted for a complete biography.
Residence of P. L. Peterson, Hamilton County, Iowa

Peter Lewis Peterson was a delegate to Republican county and state conventions, was a township trustee and a school director. He attended the Norwegian Lutheran church of Rose Grove.

He was one of the organizers of the Riverside Cornet Band of Randall, Iowa, playing an E-flat alto.
