        Killed on the St. Mihiel advance on September 12, 1918. Buried in grave No. 4-K, Map of Pannes. Relative's address, Mrs. A. B. Van Kirk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lieutenant Smith was advancing with his platoon on the St. Mihiel drive, when he was killed instantly by a machine gun bullet, which struck him in the head. He had served throughout the Lorraine campaign, Champagne, Chateau Thierry and St. Mihiel with a fine record as an officer.

       Killed at St. Mihiel, September 12th. Buried in grave No. 9-A, Map of Pannes. Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Whalen, Tipton, Iowa. Sergeant Whalen was killed on the St. Mihiel advance, while advancing with a squad of machine gunners. He was hit in the head by a machine gun bullet and killed instantly. He had served at Lorraine, Champagne, Chateau Thierry and St. Mihiel.
