For God and Country

Interpretation

Presented to the next of kin of those who fell

in the World War

The engraving illustrates The Colors and a shield of The Stars and Stripes before which stands the figure of Columbia conferring upon her son The Accolade of the New Chivalry of Humanity. The touch of the sword at the shoulder of her kneeling son denotes the Honor of Service vested in him by virtue of his allegiance to The Constitution of The Unites States of America which she holds high against the starry field of Our Flag.

The comrades stand at "Present Arms" around the altar, denoting highest respect to the ceremony.

On each side of the subject appears the old Roman symbol of strength and justice, the Fasces. This symbol represents the great protective units of strength made possible through the binding of many young branches around the staff of the edged weapon. Even greater is the strength denoted by the braided and crossed binding strands.

The inscription over the group reads --

COLUMBIA GIVES TO HER SON

THE ACCOLADE OF THE

NEW CHIVALRY OF HUMANITY

The space below the symbolic group is worded:

(Name of Gold Star)

SERVED WITH HONOR IN THE WORLD WAR

AND DIED IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY.

Signed by WOODROW WILSON
