Pearl Edwards

Honored by his Granddaughter, Polly Eckles.

Pearl Edwards, served in WW I.

Company D 168th Inf., Appanoose county, Iowa
Ending Rank: Sgt.
Medals: Purple Heart - Oak Leaf Cluster
Born: Centerville, Appanoose county, Iowa 24 Oct 1892
Died: Davenport, Scott county, Iowa 31 Oct 1966

He was wounded in France by a grenade. I remember him telling me a little about his experience: "two of us went up, only one came down alive". (I do not know the name of the other soldier) This happened when the grenade hit their fox hole. He was bothered by tiny shell fragments in his back and legs the remainder of his lifetime.  He also said the men suffered a lot from the "mustard gas".

My grandfather was very proud of his service to our country and I appreciate the opportunity this site provides to honor him.
