      Helmer Peterson, private, Company E, 9th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Tuilerie Farm, France, November 4, 1918. He displayed exceptional bravery in carrying important messages to the rear through heavy enemy artillery and machine gun barrages, keeping his commanding officer informed as to the situation at all times. Tireless in his efforts, he was instrumental in the success of the operation.

Residence at enlistment: Route No. 7, Decorah, Iowa (Winneshiek co.)
