  • The original Chapin cemetery, now known as the Old Chapin cemetery, is located 2 miles west and ½ mile south of Chapin. Traveling from Chapin, take 210th St. (C23) west to Mallard Ave. Turn south. The cemetery is not too far, on the west side of the road.

A committee composed of J.W. Avery, W.P. Avery and John Ashman met in November 1865 and engaged Obadiah Smith to survey and plat the cemetery. At the time the cemetery already had a few burials, with 'old' Isaac Neff having been the first, in 1857. Neff had come from Indiana in 1855, settling in Tharp's Grove. He was buried on the bluff overlooking Tharp's creek. The 1914 "History of Franklin County" states that he was buried "...on the hill on the line of a road. In grading the road some years afterwards a scraper struck the coffin. The body was thereupon removed and reburied in the cemetery."
  • Initally a cemetery association was formed on July 5, 1872. Present at the meeting were S.E. Crosby, William Avery, W.C. Ruble, Mr. Glendemming, A.E. Wright, E.D. Wright, N. Scott, A.P. Avery, A.G. McMillian, T.C. Riddle, O. Ingebretson, S.B. Row, William Ellis, H.H. Grinnell, W.W. Richards, A.G. Kellog, William Rowe, R. Seney, E.C. Grenelle, William Moile, O. Waters, E.B. Richards, George Crawford and W.S. Bowers. It is unknown how active this association was.

In 1910 the Old Chapin Cemetery Association was formed. The charter members were Emily White, Rachel B. Hamilton, F.M. Hamilton, Bertha Bailey, Mr. & Mrs. C.A. Levitt, Mr. & Mrs. T.H. Pascoe, Mrs. George Van Every, Mrs. D.E. Van Every, Mrs. A.H. Personett, Mr. & Mrs. John Bowers, Mr. & Mrs H.T. Long, Josephine Blackstone, N.B. McClintock, Mrs. John L. Roberts, Mr. & Mrs. Luke Bayliss and Mrs. Ira Deam.
