Johnson - Lathrop Album
~Contributed by Carole (Lathrop) Myers

My Grandmother was Anna Johanna Johnson, daughter of Micheal Johnson and Ellen Hanson. Micheal Johnson was born ca1846 in Wisconsin and came to Iowa between ca1867. Ellen Hanson was his second wife and she was born in Norway.

Micheal Johnson was first married to Olena Peterson. The 1870 US census shows Micheal (age 24) & Olena (age 24) in Oakland twp. Franklin county. By 1880 Micheal & Olena, and their children Andrew (9), Julia (7) and Bertha (2) are living in Morgan twp. Olena died in 1883 and is buried in the Otis Grove cemetery.

Shortly after the death of Oleana, Micheal remarried to Ellen Hanson. The 1885 Iowa State census enumerates Micheal, Ellen, Andrew, Julia, Bertha & Oliver (infant) in Oakland twp. Also in the household are children Peter Hanson 11, Tom Hanson 8 and Sina Hanson 5. The 3 Hanson children may be those of Ellen from a first marriage. Micheal died between 1920 and 1925.

Anna Johanna Johnson was born January 13, 1888 in Popejoy. She married Samuel Forrest Lathrop on March 13, 1907 in Marshalltown, Iowa. Samuel was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on September 13, 1886 and was the son of Harrison B. and Barbara Lathrop. At the time of their marriage, Samuel was farming in the Popejoy vicinity and working as a telegrapher for the Rock Island railroad. They moved to Marshalltown in 1914 where Samuel worked for Western Grocery Mills and later was a conductor on the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad. Samuel and Anna were the parents of six children.
