Swan Lake School Sold at Public Auction Saturday

The Swan Lake school house which has not been used for a number of years was sold at public auction Saturday to M. L. Owens of Dolliver for $260. The coal house was purchased by Robert Woods for $50 and the bell in the school house was sold for $16 and was donated by William Harvey, Jr. to the church in Gruver.

The Swan Lake school house is believed to have been built in 1881 and was located three miles southeast of Gruver. At one time the church at Gruver stood beside the schoolhouse and the bell in the school house was rung on Sunday morning as a call to worship. Later when the railroad was built through Gruver, the church was moved to the north edge of town.

Equipment in the schoolhouse, which included pictures, lamps, seats, an organ, looking glass, swing and benches were sold to a number of individual purchasers.

The total amount of the auction sale was $341.50. James Rainey was clerk at the sale and William Foshier was auctioneer.
