EMMET COUNTY PIONEER LADY DIES IN JACKSON
(Jackson County Pilot, Jackson, Minn.)
Again, it is the sad duty of the Pilot to record the passing of another of the early pioneer mothers of this community, who did so much in the county to develop a better and more pure homelife, in the passing on Tuesday afternoon, April 7th [1925] of Mrs. Helge Olson at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. O. Nasby in this city.
While it was known by the many friends of the family that Mrs. Olson was in delicate health, the news of her death nevertheless came as a great shock to all when friends and family were brought to the realization that the presence of her smiling face and Christian council would be known no more.
Mrs. Olson passed the early days of privation that came to all pioneers of this section of the state, however she never complained and the Olson home was known far and near for its hospitality and the many good deeds that terminated from the hands of the lady who presided over that home and while Mrs. Olson has passed on, her memory and the good she did will long remain as a happy heritage to her family.
Ellen Karine Arneson was born at Esper, Norway, February 11, 1853, the daughter of John and Maren Arneson. She was early confirmed in the Lutheran faith and has always led a truly Christian life. She came to America in 1864 and settled at Estherville, Iowa, where in 1868 she was united in marriage to Mr. Helge Olson in that city and immediately went to live on a farm in Emmet county, just across the Iowa line, which was her home until 1911 when Mr. and Mrs. Olson moved to Jackson and where Mr. Olson died in September, 1911. Since that time Mrs. Olson has made her home largely with her daughter, Mrs. C. O. Nasby. To their union three children were born and she is now survived by her daughter, Mrs. Nasby, and son Charles H. both of this city, her son Ole J. having preceded his parents in death.
The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon, short services taking place from the Nasby home at one o'clock after which the body will be taken to Petersburg and services held in the Lutheran church at that place at two o'clock, the Rev. S. C. Eastvold of Our Saviour's Lutheran church in this city, officiating. Interment will be made beside her departed husband in the Olson lot in the Union State Line cemetery.

She was an active member of the Wallingford Lutheran church.
After Mr. Olson's death in 1926, Mrs. Olson kept her home for more than ten years, but four and one-half years ago she moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. L. Torreson.
A fractured hip kept her in bed for some time three years ago, but it healed and she was able to be up and move around until a year and a half ago when she fell and broke the other hip. That and other complications made her bedfast most of the time since.
All five of her children who survive her live in the Wallingford community. Her two daughters are Mrs. Torreson and Mrs. Glenn Young, and her three sons are Lloyd Olson, Norman Olson and Clarence Olson.

PIONEER RESIDENT DIED SUDDENLY LAST FRIDAY
Ole C. Olson Dropped Dead in His Home at Wallingford
WAS ILL BUT A FEW HOURS
Came to Emmet County Over Forty years Ago--Born in Norway--59 Years Old
Ole C. Olson, a resident of Emmet County over fifty years, dropped dead at his home in Wallingford at 12:30 Friday afternoon [Feb. 26, 1926 at the age of 58 years, 11 months, 18 days.] It was a great shock to the people of Wallingford as he had been at his place of business, the oil station, and was working there waiting on customers and said nothing about not feeling well. About 10:30 in the forenoon his son came in the station and Mr. Olson told him he would go home until after dinner. When he reached home he complained of a pain in his chest and laid down on the bed for an hour or so and then got up and sat in a chair near the stove. He ate a light dinner and Mrs. Olson took a lunch to the boy at the oil station and when she returned Mr. Olson made an effort to get up from the chair he was sitting in and fell dead to the floor. A doctor called immediately pronounced his death due to heart failure.
Mr. Olson was born at Gol, Hallingdal, Norway, on March 8, 1867, and came to this country when thirteen years of age. He came direct to Wallingford where he had relatives living. He worked on the farm for many farmers in that vicinity and proved himself a good workman. In the year 1888 he was married to Miss Tena Peterson and they settled on a farm in High Lake township. As years passed by he bought more land and continued to farm until nine years ago when the family retired from farm work and built a home in Wallingford to enjoy the latter part of their lives. He was too active to sit around and not work and later bought the Crim Oil Station at Wallingford and has since conducted it. Deceased had always been a very healthy man until the day of his death. He had made many friends during his residence in the Wallingford vicinity and a cloud of gloom hovers over this little city on account of his death. He was a good man and everybody was his friend. It was the writer's good fortune to have known him well for many years and a finer man we never knew. He was a man always in good humor, courteous and accommodating and will not only be missed by his family and relatives but by his many friends.
Left to mourn his death is a loving wife and five children, three boys, Clarence, Lloyd and Norman, and two daughters, Myrtle and Mrs. Glen Young. Two children died in infancy. He also leaves four sisters to mourn his death, Mrs. O. L. Rustad, Mrs. Edwin Osher and Mrs. O. O. Refsell, all residing in Wallingford, and Mrs. James Johnson, of Inwood, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at the church east of Wallingford at two o'clock Monday afternoon and remains interred in the cemetery near the church. Rev. T. Hansen, pastor of the Norwegian church at Wallingford, had charged of the funeral service. All to whom he was known extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.

O. S. Olson, the well known jeweler and optician, died at Ephiphany, S. D., last Thursday, at the age of 43 years. About a year ago he was stricken with consumption and two weeks ago Tuesday left for South Dakota in the hope he might secure relief there. But it was useless and he passed away after being there a little over a week. The remains were brought home, arriving here Saturday. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and was largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. Ginn and were under the auspices of the Masons. The internment was in Oak Hill cemetery. The pall bearers were Masons and Woodmen; the deceased having been an honored member of both orders. The deceased was a native of Norway but came to this country with his parents when quite young. He came to Estherville from Ruthven about four years ago. Funeral of E. B. Osher Was Held Friday Afternoon
Remains Laid To Rest in Riverside Cemetery
Mention was made in last week's [Graettinger] Times of the death of E. B. Osher, 67, who passed away in his sleep Tuesday, March 26, 1946, at 3:15 a.m. Mr. Osher had complained of feeling tired Monday but did not feel ill. He rested for a time and apparently was in the best of health. Last June he suffered a heart attack but recovered from it. His health since then perhaps had not been the best but he looked hearty and robust.
The funeral was held Friday afternoon. Short services were conducted at the home and the regular services were held at the Wallingford Lutheran church and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. C. B. Gunderson. The funeral was very largely attended by neighbors and friends who knew the deceased so well and who held such a high regard for him. Banks of beautiful flowers were in evidence, the gift of sorrowing relatives and friends. Numerous mission donations were made in his memory. Interment was made in the Riverside cemetery near Wallingford. The pall bearers were Jake Jensen, Charley Jackson, Eugene Burg, Nels Nelson, Ralph Borchers, and Carl Thoreson.
Edward B. Osher was born in Twelve Mile Lake township, Emmet county, Iowa,
September 17, 1878. He was 67 years of age last September. On April 8, 1903, he
was united in marriage to Miss Kate Jensen. The couple made their home on the
Osher farm in Twelve Mile Lake until three years ago when they purchased a home
in Graettinger and retired from the farm.
Deceased is survived by his wife and by nine children. The children are Elmer,of
Ronan, Montana; Gilford, of Wallingford; Leonard, of Estherville; Norman of
Denver, Colorado; Earnest, who is in the service in New Mexico; Esther (Mrs.
Glendon Thu), of Graettinger; Ruth (Mrs. Daryl Nelson), of Des Moines; and
Geneva and John, who are at home. All the children were home for the funeral.
Mr. Osher's death is also mourned by four brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Ole Osher, of Story City, Iowa; Oliver, of Graettinger; Gilbert, of Estherville; and William of Reedley, California. The sisters are Mrs. Anna Jacobson, Mrs. Henry C. Duus, and Mrs. Alfred Nelson. Three brothers, Nels, Louis and John Osher preceded their brother in death.
Mr. Osher's sudden death was not only a shock to his wife and children and to his relatives but it was also a shock to neighbors and friends of the Graettinger and Wallingford communities. Mr. Osher was about as usual and apparently in excellent health and hence the news of his sudden death was almost unbelievable.
Mr. Osher was one of the well known citizens of this community. He was a resident of Twelve Mile Lake for 64 years until the family retired from the farm and purchased a cozy, comfortable home in Graettinger to enjoy the rest they so richly deserved. During his long residents on the farm Mr. Osher prospered. He was not only a capable worker but was a good manager and a successful business man. He was a splendid neighbor and sincere friend. He was a man of high ideals, of excellent habits and character and an outstanding Christian gentleman. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife and by his splendid family of sons and daughters.
The Times extends sincere sympathy to Mrs. Osher, to the sons and daughters and to the brothers and sisters and other relatives in their hour of sorrow.

Boy Dies of Heart Attack in Swimming Pool
RICHARD OTTO, 6, GOES UNDER IN SHALLOW END
Was Fair Swimmer--Funeral on Monday from M. E. Church
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Methodist Church at 2:30 following short services at the Sternborg Funeral Home for Richard Dean Otto, six year old boy, who died Friday [June 29, 1934].
At an inquest held by Coroner Fred. J. Sternborg Saturday morning a jury of three men, J. F. Hepp, Dan S. Howard and Vance R. Noe decided "From the evidence in this case we find that this boy, Dick Otto, came to his death from a heart attack after entering the swimming pool."
Mrs. Beulah Coleman was one of the principal witnesses called and she said that she saw the boy start to enter the water, take hold of the rope and call something to some other boys, then dive into the water. She stated that she saw bubbles come to the surface after the boy was lying face down on the bottom of the pool. She then called to the others playing there that the child did not come up. Bob Chalberg waded in and pulled Dick out and artificial resuscitation was immediately started by Maurice McCall, assistant lifeguard.
Dr. C. E. Birney, city health physician was immediately called and he stated in his testimony on Saturday morning before the coroner's jury that when he arrived the lifeguard was already working on the boy and when he first saw the body he though it was not a case of drowning. Only a very small amount of water came out of the lungs. It seems he boy had been eating green apples just a short time before he went swimming.
Maurice McCall the assistant life guard was on duty at the pool. Only one person is left on duty at the pool between 6 and 7 and he was in the bathhouse to give out baskets to the bathers and he had just gone into the engine room when the shouts of the children brought him to the scene.
Resuscitation was also attempted with an oxygen tank for an hour and a half but during that time not a spark of life was noticeable.
Richard was born in Estherville September 21,1927 and had lived here all his life. He leaves to mourn his passing his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Otto, two sisters, Doris 13, Madeline 4, and four brothers, Kenneth 19, Virgil 18, Keith 15 and Billy 10, besides numerous other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Anna Paulson was born in Ulvik, Hardanger, Norway, March 27, 1842. Her parents were Peder Anderson and Guro Hallvardsdatter Vambheim. She was baptized March 28, 1842, when she was one day old, and confirmed in Eidsfjords, Kjerke, Aug. 1, 1858. On April 6, 1866 she married Gunder Paulson Nesheim and that same year in company with her husband's mother, sister and one brother, they emigrated to America, coming to New York.
The trip across the Atlantic was in a sailboat called "Martha" taking six weeks and three days to make the voyage. Because of sickness aboard they were compelled to stay in quarantine a week before they were allowed to land.
In Chicago while helping to transfer their baggage, Mr. Paulson had the misfortune of having a trunk fall on him and break several ribs. After receiving medical aid they were able to proceed to Madison, Wisconsin. Being destitute of funds, having only 25 cents and being in a strange city without friends, their hopes for the future looked rather dull. An uncle, learning of their arrival in Madison, invited them to his farm 10 miles from town, where they stayed three months. Later a brother-in-law from Taylor county, Iowa came after them in a covered wagon and oxen. The journey lasted three weeks. They lived there a year. In the fall of 1867 they moved to Fillmore county, Minn.
Knitted for Living

In the spring of 1872 they moved to Emmet county in company with Mr. Paulson's three brothers and families, each in their own covered wagon drawn by oxen. After three weeks of hard travel they arrived at Estherville, which then consisted of one store, a bank and six residences.
They journeyed south and came to the Mandrup Edvenson home,on the south shore of Ryan Lake. Here they stayed until a place was found to live, which was a dugout, east of the L. S. Berge farm. Here they lived for four years. In 1874 Mr. Paulson and a neighbor, started for South Dakota to purchase land, and in reaching Jackson, Minn., they came in contact with a huge swarm of grasshoppers. Disheartened, they returned home. In the year 1878, they moved to their present location in Jack Creek township where Mrs. Paulson had lived since.
Often Needed Flour
The nearest trading post was an inland village to the north, called Swan Lake and the nearest flour mill, at that time, was 40 miles distant. "On Thursday, the 15 inst. [15 April 1869], Mr. Lars Peterson, a Norwegian, age 65 years, attempted, in company with a young Norwegian lady, to cross the Des Moines River in a small boat, in Peterson township [now High Lake township] in this county. By some cause to us unexplained, the boat capsized. The old gentleman and girl being thus at the mercy of the swollen stream managed to get hold of some willows, and their loud cries for assistance at length attracted the attention of Peter Larson, Esq. [his son] who hastened to their assistance, but before he could reach his aged father, who had become exhausted by effort to save himself, the old gentleman sank to rise no more, and his body has not yet been recovered. By extraordinary and praiseworth efforts, Mr. Larson succeeded in rescuing the girl who, supported by the willows, contended for her life with the mad element for over an hour."

Died: Mr. Nels Peterson [who was born in Norway 5 Jul 1835 on the Brugjeld farm in Balestrand parish, Sogn, Norway to Peder Nielsen Brugjeld and Gjertrud Olsdatter Torsnes] died yesterday [3 May 1873] at his residence in Peterson township, [later called High Lake township], after a protracted illness of consumption. Mr. Peterson was one of the pioneers of this county, and a man who, by hard labor and judicious management, had acquired a fine property. He was recognized as an upright, moral citizen, a kind neighbor, and true friend and he commanded the respect of all who knew him. His demise is not only a serious and irreparable loss to his worthy family, but a great loss to the whole county which has known him so long and so well.
[Surviving were his wife Betsey, three sons, Peter N., George N. and Ole N. and two daughters, Guri and Tena. Mr. Peterson, who donated land for a cemetery which was first called the Brugjeld cemetery, was buried next to his first born son, the first occupant of the cemetery. The cemetery is now known as the Wallingford Lutheran cemetery.]

PIONEER SETTLER PASSES TO REWARD
Mrs. Ole B. Peterson Died in Wallingford Home Tuesday, August 22
CAME TO EMMET COUNTY IN 1863
Survived by Her Husband, Five Sons and Two Daughters, Funeral Held Saturday
Afternoon
Mrs. Ole B. Peterson, one of the pioneers of this county, died at her home in Wallingford August 22, at a result of a bad fall, that she had some time ago.
The resident pastor, Rev. Sevatson, gives the following interesting sketch of her life:
Miss Sigri [Tollefson] was born in Hol Hallingdal, Norway, December 4, 1848, from where she emigrated to America in 1861, coming to Clayton County, Iowa. In 1863 she came to Emmet County where she has lived since. On September 23, 1867, she was married to Ole B. Peterson. They lived on the Peterson farm near Wallingford until 1914, when they moved to Wallingford, where Mrs. Peterson passed away Tuesday evening, August 22, 1916, aged 67 years, 8 months and 18 days.
Ten children were born to this union, three daughters and seven sons. Two of the sons and one daughter have passed away. The seven who still live are: Mrs. Gertrude Wass, Lake Park, Iowa; Joe Peterson, Mobridge, S. D.; Peter O. Peterson, Horsgards, Alberta, Canada; Carl Peterson, Pequot, Minn.; Asher Peterson, Wallingford; Oscar Peterson on the home farm near Wallingford and Miss Roselia Peterson, who has lived with her parents. She also leaves two sisters and one brother together with a large number of near relatives.
Funeral services took place Saturday afternoon, August 26, from the home in Wallingford and the Lutheran church of which she was a member.
Mrs. Peterson was a person with exceptional rare qualities. Unassuming in her ways, by nature kind. With a pious Christian spirit, she was always ready to serve both in the home and in the congregation. She was one of the few of whom it may be honorably said that she had many friends and no enemies, of which the unusually large attendance at the funeral was a good testimony. She will be missed by all who knew her, missed in church at the hour of worship, missed in the Ladies Aid Society, missed by friends but most of all by her own family and especially by him at whose side she stood so faithfully nearly 50 years. Peaceful be her rest.

The funeral service for the late Mrs. Halvor Peterson of the Jack Creek township was held on Friday, Jan. 6th 1933. A short service was conducted at the home of L. H. Peterson, the son of the departed, where the mother and son had lived happily together for many hears. The service proper was begun at 2 p.m. and it was held in the Immanuel Lutheran church south of Gruver. As a member of this congregation Mrs. Peterson had proven to be one of its very faithful ones. Rev. S. Strand of Wallingford, a former pastor of the deceased, assisted Rev. Peder Nordsletten, the pastor of the congregation, in the service that was conducted at the house and likewise at the church. The Immanuel Lutheran church choir rendered three songs at the church and also furnished the singing at the High Lake cemetery where the interment was made. Mr. H. Mahlum of the Mahlum & Anderson undertakers firm directed the funeral. The pall bearers were the following: P. G. Paulson, Sten Tendal, Andrew Olson, John O. Johnson, Knut Tangeros and AanonAanonson.
Mrs. Halvor Peterson who prior to her marriage was known as Sigvor Vike, was born in Voss Norway on Feb. 12, 1848. She was united in marriage to Halvor Peterson Ronve on June 7, 1877. To this union five children were born.
Mr. and Mrs. Peterson came to this country in the spring of 1889; they came direct to Emmet county, where Mrs. Peterson continually resided until the day of her death, Jan. 3, 1933. She enjoyed very good health until about ten days before she passed away. She then contracted a cold which developed into pneumonia, which finally caused her death. When her earthly sojourn was completed she had attained as her high age; 84 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her husband and three children, one of them Halvor, passed away less than a month before Mrs. Peterson did. Those left behind to mourn the loss of a very kind mother are two children, Lewis Peterson and Mrs. Ray Bryan.

T. O. Peterson Passed Away
This community suffered a severe loss when Mr. Tollif Peterson died on Friday, February 5th. He had been ailing for over a year when he was taken sick with bronchitis and heart trouble for which he consulted several of the best specialists in the northwest but in spite of all he gradually grew worse until the end came at 8 o'clock February 5th, 1909. The funeral services were held in the Lutheran church one mile east of Wallingford, Rev. Fjeldstad officiating. The church was beautifully decorated and draped with black and white and the flowers were many and very beautiful.
Tollif O. [Olson] Peterson was born in the same house where he died. He was born April 14, 1879, which made his age at the time of his death 30 years, 10 months and 9 days. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. O. [Ole] B. (Brugjeld) Peterson who are among the oldest settlers of this part of the county. Both his parents are yet alive and five brothers and two sisters to mourn his death. His brothers are Joe Peterson of Glenham, South Dakota; Peter Peterson of Markersville, Alberta, Canada; Carl Peterson who is with the firm Myhre and Gunderson of Wallingford; Asher and Oscar Peterson are both engaged in farming in this community. His oldest sister Mrs. Frank Wass of Lake Park, Iowa and Miss Rocilia Peterson who lives with her parents.
Mr. Peterson was one of our best young men and the community has suffered a loss in more than one way. He was ever ready to give a fellowman a helping hand; upright and fair in all his affairs, whether it was in business, church or society. And his friends have nothing but the most pleasant remembrance of his life and an empty space will be found in our midst.
The esteem and popularity of this young man was manifested by the great number of friends who attended the funeral which was held last Thursday, February 11th, 1909. Rev. Fjeldstad preached the sermon and Mr. J. M. Wolden closed with a few touching remarks and personal greetings from the departed.
