He is listed on the 1861 - 1934 Military Pension Index. In 1870 he is in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, age 36, b. New York. In 1880 he is in Sioux City, age 47, Grain Dealer, born Illinois, father born Vermont, mother born Pennsylvania. Died 9 April 1896, buried in Floyd Cemetery, Sioux City, Block 691, Lot 1.

Mustered Sioux City Cavalry November 18, 1861. Promoted to Second Corporal January 17, 1863; to First Corporal May 22, 1863. Transferred to Company I, Seventh Cavalry, July 14, 1863. Mustered out November 23, 1864. Pension as a invalid file but date unclear. Married Euphemia; children: Charles E., John W., Edward (Edwin), and Effie. Census reports: 1860, Spirit Lake, Dickinson County; 1870 Des Moines; 1880 Boone County, and 1900, as a widower in Des Moines, Polk County with daughter Effie. He died sometime between 1900 and 1910.

Promoted to Fourth Sergeant January 17, 1863. Transferred to Company I, Seventh Cavalry, July 14, 1863. Promoted to Full 3rd Sergeant on December 4, 1863. Mustered out on November 23, 1864 at Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Living in Sioux City in 1870 and in 1880 as a painter. In 1900 as a widower he is living with his daughter and her family in Rock (Cushing), Woodbury County, Iowa.In 1910 he is living as a lodger in District 0212, Sioux Ward 7, Woodbury County, Iowa.

Stewart, William G. Age 42 (birth date about 1819). Residence Sioux City. Nativity Ireland. Enlisted as Quarter Master Sergeant on September 25, 1861. Mustered in Iowa Sioux City Cavalry Company on November 14, 1861. Transferred to Company I, Seventh Cavalry, July 14, 1863. Mustered out on November 14, 1863. The Iowa WPA Graves Survey lists a William G. Steward as born 12-5-1819, died 6-18-1864, and buried at Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, Washington County, Iowa.
