Before he could get warm dry clothes, he became so chilled, he caught pneumonia and died. I never heard that he drowned or that he was after his hat. The date of his passing was Nov 20 1869. I remember distinctly the part about pneumonia and breaking thru the ice which fits in with the date in Nov and the severe winters reported in those days.".

BIBLE: Here is the record from the bible:

Mrs. Mary McLane born Conastoga Pa Dec 3 1826 deceased Oct 15 1914

Noah James McLane's birth father was established through an heirs list that was filed in the Dauphin County Pennsylvania Court.

His Mothers name was established through John McLane's Will and a marriage record of Moses McLane.

Noah McLane was a minister of the German Methodist faith. After his marriage to Mary Elisabeth Hertz, he lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for just about two years before he decided he would join his wife's family who migrated to Bonfield, Illinois in the late 1840's. There is an indication in one of his poems that he had visited Illinois before leaving in 1851.

The journey took six weeks time. They settled in Bonfield Illinois and later moved to Kankakee Illinois.

An entry from the "History of the Illinois Conference of the Evangelical Church 1837- 1937" notes that Noah McLain was received from the West Pennsylvania Conference in 1852. He became the first Circuit riding Minister.

From the "History of Kankakee County, Methodist Evangelical Churches" it is noted that in 1853, services were held on the second story of the Illinois Central depot and in 1854 the place of worship was changed to the home of William Bishop. In 1854 and 1855 Noah McLane was the pastor of this congregation and in the late part of the year, plans were laid for building a church. In the fall of 1855, Noah McLane relinquished his position as pastor.

At this time, it appears that Noah McLane and his family traveled to Wisconsin and possibly stayed in that state for proximitly two years.

On April 25 1857, Noah McLane was granted a Preachers license and in 1858, became a Circuit Rider Minister in the small town of Zoar until 1860.

It is said from a bio of Daniel McLane, in latter year, Noah McLane relinquished duties of the ministries on account of ill health, his throat being effected.

On Jan 13, 1867, he was granted an Internal Revenue License to carry on the business or occupation of Eatrig House at Court Street.

Noah McLane also carried mail between Kankakee and Wilmington Illinois.

3. Cecelia Cate, The Oskaloosa Herald, Cecelia Cate, wrote a letter to the editor of the The Oskaloosa Herald in 1982. She told me that they could use any part of this letter that they wanted but they chose to use it all. I am only to use excerpts of this letter. "It was in the 1920's when I was growing up, visiting my grandparents in Oskaloosa during the summertime while my parents were traveling, left a lasting impression on me.

The house at 515 A street was two story, grey with white trim, to which had been added lattice work and a pergola. There was a tiny gazebo, many flowers, and a vegetable garden at the back behind a white lattice fence. There were three whit epeeling birch trees transplanted from beside a nearby river. Some of these additions were ideas my grandparents brought back with them from winter vacations in California, including even a few plants carried tenderly in a shoe box on the train.

There was a rubber tire swing in the tree in the back yard.

On hot summer evenings my grandfather often got the big Overland touring car out of the garage and took my grandmother and me for a long ride to "cool off". Then back home before bedtime we shared an apple which was brought up from the cool basement and cored and sliced by grandfather while sitting in his cahir by the dining room table under the light of the stained glass chandelier. Finally upstairs to bed to fall asleep with the soft whisper of the big fan in the hall.".

I have not been there only once since you and I were there and that time she sent me a special invitation to come on that paticular day and of course I had to go. But she is not what she used to be towards me by any means.

I would like to write a letter but time will not allow today and please excuse me.

IV e. George B. McLane - 1. The Burlington Hawkeye (Burlington Iowa 1961, by Dan Bied). "Retired Brakeman Is On The Job, At Home

G.B. McLane, a railroader nearly a half century, is swinging a pretty mean brush these days.

Now retired, he's keeping busy painting his attractive home at 1211 Cambell, "fooling around in the yard and just plain taking it easy".

A Burlington native, McLane attended South Boundary School, (now Grimes) along with another South HIll boy destined to make railroading, then politics, his career, Mayor Ray O. Morrison.

McLane went to work on the Burlington railroad as a clerk at Centerville on July 3, 1913. In 1914 he was transferred to the Burlington Freight house as assistant cashier, where he worked with Fred Meyers, Paul Hill and the Les Ehrets, among others.

He entered yard and train service in 1917 and became a brakeman on Armisice Day, Nov 11 1918. McLane became a conductor in 1936 then relinquished his rights to the job and reverted to brakeman in 1947. He remained a brakeman until retiring to health conditions early this year.

$50 A Month

There've been a lot of changes in railroading, McLane said between brush strokes the other day. "The job pays a lot more now but of course it takes a lot more to live".

The veteran railroader was never involved in a train accident "except a few derailments and they're common" but lost the end of a finger in 1919 when it became caught in a coupler.

One vivid recollection is a pileup years agon on Woodburn hill near Osceola when a speeding train vaulted off the tracks on a sharp curve. Several men were killed and McLane's crew helped take the injured to Osceola.

Two Pensions

McLane and his wife, the former Eva Williamson of Ottumwa, both receive railroad pensions. They plan to travel to Arizona and California this fall to visit her brother and his sister.

The McLanes have a son, Jack employed at the Iowa Ordinance Plant and two grand daughters, Mrs. Judy DeGrede and Sue Ann McLane, both of East Moline Ill.

Applies Brakes

Reflecting his 48 year career ex brakeman McLane says the work was rewarding bit its nice to roll to a halt and take life easy in a well upholstered chair." George McLane first job with the railroad was a call boy, going to the railroad mens house and waking them up every morning for work.

I can also remember that my great Grandfather did not have any of the tops of his fingers.

DEATH:

2. The Burlington Hawkeye Gazette (Burlington Iowa, October 22, 1969). "George B. McLane

Injury: Injury Announcement, The Burlington Hawkeye June 5, 1923

George McLane, a foreman of the switch engine at the Oskaloosa yards of the C.B. & Q. road, lost the second finger of his left hand and had the third finger of the same and badly mashed in an accident here Tuesday. The left hand was caught in making a coupling and painfully injured. McLane's hurt is not serious though it will keep him off duty for some time.

BIOGRAPHY: George McLane attended South Boundary School (now Grimes). If I can remember, he didn't finish past the fourth grade.

At this time, he went to work with the railroad, as a call boy and on July 3 1913 entered work on the Burlington Railroad as a clerk at Centerville Iowa. In 1914 he transferred to the Burlington Freight house as assistant cashier. He entered yard and train service in 1917 and became a brakeman on Nov. 11, 1918. *Researchers Note* This was a beautiful brick home and sat on a terrace. Breathtaking view. As little kids we were never allowed to play in the front yard but on the sidewalk only. I thought it was because Grampa didn't want us to destroy his beautiful lawn but my mom told me it was because he didn't want us to fall down the terraced hill. There was a very nice lady that lived next door, her name was Mrs. Wischmier. She never had children but adored us kids when we came to visit. She would call us over and give us a cookie. My mother was raised in this house by her grandparents. Gramma would save her perfume bottles and Ajax bottles for us to play with. She kept them in my mom's top right hand drawer in her dresser.

Richard Joy - 1. Daily Variety (Los Angeles California: Thursday, November 7, 1991). "Richard W. (Dick) Joy

Richard W. (Dick) Joy, 75, a veteran announcer who was the voice of radio's "The Telephone Hour" and TV's "Playhouse 90", died Oct. 31 at his home in Talent, Ore., of complications from liver disease.

Joy spent 35 years in L.A. area, broadcasting before his retirement in 1969. He moved to the Medford Ore., area in 1975.

A Connecticut native, Joy started by doing shows on L.A. stations while studying broadcast journalism at USC. He then became a staff announcer for Hearst Radio (KEHE) and later on CBS' KNX in L.A. before going on active duty with the U.S. Naval Reserve in World War II.

After the war, he was a partner in the construction and operation of KCMJ, the radio station in Palm Springs, and also was the announcer for such popular radio shows as "The Adventures Of Sam Spade", "Vox Pop", "The Telephone Hour", and "The Danny Kaye, "Nat King Cole", and Spike Jones" shows.

He returned to KNX as a newscaster from 1950 - 56, overlapping that job for a time with work as news director of the L.A. classical musical station KFAC, a post he held from 1951 - 67.

During those years, he freelanced in radio and TV, announcing such TV series as "Playhouse 90", "December Bride", and "Lost In Space".

Richard "Dick" Joy was regularly heard by millions of Americans tuned to CBS during the Golden Age of Radio and TV-the 1930s through the 1950s. Dick began broadcasting for KNX radio in Los Angeles in the 1930s while he was a student at USC. At 21 he was the youngest staff announcer at the CBS Radio Network. In addition to his local duties at KNX, Dick was the announcer for such network shows as Spike Jones, Danny Kaye, Nat King Cole, The Bell Telephone Hour, The Silver Theater, Vox Pop, and Sam Spade.

Working with producer Barney Miller, Dick created CBS Sunday Desk, which pioneered the use of multiple, short voice bytes in a paced program. Until then, radio news used fewer voice bytes which could vary from one to five minutes or more.

Dick made the transition to CBS Television in the late 40s as a reporter for CBS’ You Are There, and later as announcer for December Bride, Perry Mason, Have Gun-Will Travel, Daktari, Lost in Space, and Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. His "Personal Best" was as the announcer for the legendary Playhouse 90, working with people like Rod Serling and John Frankenheimer every week. In later years, Dick became the News Director for KFAC-AM and FM, the classical music stations for Los Angeles in the 1960s.

Did I Ever Tell Ya the One About...

"The Chargogagogmanchogagogchabunamungamog Caper"?

"My father, John Michael Hayes, was the writer on a number of radio dramas in the 1940's, before moving on to film work in the 1950's. Among those shows was The Adventures of Sam Spade, and he delighted in relating this story about one particular episode.

In Massachusetts, there is a town called Webster, located on the shores of Webster Lake. The Indian name of the lake is one of the longest place names in the world. My father said (and I have *not* verified) that the name means "You fish on your side of the lake, I'll fish on mine, and nobody fishes in the middle."

He decided to use that name in the title of an episode: "The Chargogagogmanchogagogchabunamungamog Caper" (September 25, 1949).

But they went further...

The announcer on that show was a man named Dick Joy. (If my memory serves, he was later a regular on You Are There.) He was *legendary* for being completely unflappable and able to pronounce anything. So Dad and the crew decided to play a joke on him. When they rehearsed the show, they contrived to keep the title page of the episode out of Dick Joy's hands until the show was already underway. They took the first commercial break, and then, *just* before he was to do the "And now we return to The Gold Key Caper..." sort of introduction, they handed him the title page with this god-awful name on it. All present grinned in silent anticipation of what was to come.

Well, he took the paper, cleared his throat and said, "And now we return to The Chargogagogmanchogagogchabunamungamog Caper brought to you by Wildroot Hair Oil."

Letter Perfect. NO stumbling. Not even a BLINK!

Who snitched? HOW did he get hold of the script in advance? Why had their carefully crafted joke fallen to pieces?

What no one in the gang knew was - Dick Joy grew up in Webster, Massachusetts."
