History: Also known as McDowell Cemetery. A small piece of land was bought from Dorcas McDowell for a new addition. She lived 100 yards from the cemetery.

Mordecai Dick [Dare] Miller came to Burrell Township in 1849 from Terre Haute, Indiana to establish a new community of Terre Haute. He gave the land for the cemetery. (See #3-1)

Some of the early obituaries refer to this cemetery as Burrell Cemetery, after the township.

Terre Haute was never a large or successful settlement.

The story is that a Mr. West was the first burial, but there is no stone marking his gravesite.

SURNAMES:  An * means no tombstone, but indicates a known burial.
