| History: This cemetery is also known as Funktown
Cemetery (also Old Funk Cemetery or Hazen Cemetery). In 1853, a man by
the name of Funk, Built a grist mill on Grand River. A settlement near
the mill was called Funktown. In 1868 there was a “Funk’s Mill Post
Office.” In the early 1850’s land was secured from Joseph Crees for a
cemetery. It was high on an oak tree ridge, so the reason for the name.
The earliest tombstone burial, 1855, was a child of Joseph Crees. An earlier cemetery, Hazen or Old Funk Cemetery, was located one mile west and when Oak Hill Cemetery was started, 7 to 12 graves were moved from Old Funk to Oak Hill. An inscription on one stone, “Killed in the Funk Mill” was a ten year old boy, Charles Hazen, buried in 1876. In 1911 land was purchased from Wood Binning for a new addition to the cemetery. Mr. Binning made a circle mound for the future burials of his family, but they moved to other parts of the country. There are two gates to this cemetery, the original one on the west and a newer one farther up the hill. Old Section of the cemetery is on the North side, first row by the gate on the West side. |
