History: The land for New Salem Cemetery was given by Samuel McDowell and his wife in 1874 although there were many burials made before that time. In 1858 22 people gathered together to form the New Salem Regular Baptist Church located on the Cannon Ball Trail (now known as the Leon-Pleasanton road.) a brick church was built on the top of a hill near the site where the present structure stands but a new 2-story frame structure replaced it in 1875. A third building, dedicated in 1900, was destroyed by a windstorm and rebuilt in 1934 and a Sunday School addition built in 1958. New Salem is the oldest Baptist Church in Decatur County still active today.
