| History: The land for the cemetery was owned by
Malay and Mary (Ferguson) McDonald who came to Decatur County in 1855
and purchased 1000 acres. Their children buried in this cemetery , but
the name probably came from a Lillie infant who is buried in an unmarked
grave. The cemetery is well cared for and some attempt has been made to
place broken stones upright in the ground where they belong. On the 1875
map, R.P. Lillie lived west of the cemetery. In Memory of Perry P. Orfield 1853-1908. By bequest of will left in trust 1000.00 for the upkeep of the Lily Cemetery we respect his wishes let us all help to carry forth his noble deed. (7-8) Re-Canvassed: By Leah Sue Price Walling July, 18, 2000. I grew up in the area and always hear this cemetery referred to as Smith Cemetery but the gate does read Lillie Cemetery. I also heard Lillie's owned the land when the first Lillie child was buried but have no proof of this information. New info. is added and changes are noted in Red. |
