Early Development of Graceland College

Graceland's articles of incorporation were first read on December 31, 1888. The college was finally established by General Conference Resolution Number 335 on April 11, 1890, empowering the committee to make all necessary arrangements toward the establishment of an educational institution. Members of the first official committee, who were appointed by General Conference Resolution Number 334, were: president Bishop G. A. Blakeslee, treasurer David Dancer and secretary Robert Winning. Edmund L. Kelley and Robert Winning were the committee on subscription lists.

The first Board of Directors, then known as the “College Board,” was appointed by General Conference Resolution Number 339 on April 11, 1895, and convened for the first time on April 30, 1895. They were renamed the Board of Trustees on May 2, 1895.

The name “Graceland College” became official on May 2, 1895 when the Board of Trustees cast their vote and approval.

Board of Directors

RLDS General Conference Resolution Number 339, passed on April 11, 1895, appointed Graceland's first Board of Directors, then called the College Board. The original articles of incorporation stated that at least two of the board members should not be members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and that the board shall be non-sectarian.

Members of the first board were: chairman Joseph Smith III, secretary Daniel F. Lambert, W. W. Blair, P. P. Kelley, James R. Smith, Alex H. Smith, Dr. J. H. Hansen, E. A. Blakeslee and Edmund L. Kelley. P. P. Kelley and James R. Smith were the members who did not belong to the RLDS Church.

The Board of Directors assumed the task of overseeing the specific educational functions of the college. The Board of Trustees handled the college's funding.

The first Board of Directors meeting was held on June 6, 1895 at 9 a.m. in the Herald House office. J. H. Hansen was chosen as the temporary chairman and Daniel F. Lambert was named as temporary secretary. During the meeting, Joseph Smith was elected as the permanent chairman and Daniel Lambert as permanent secretary. The group also drew for their terms with two-year terms going to Daniel Lambert, A. H. Smith and J. R. Smith; and, three-year terms going to P. P. Kelley, Edmund Kelley and J. H. Hansen. W. W. Blair, Joseph Smith and E. A. Blakeslee drew one-year terms. J. H. Hansen, Edmund Kelley and Daniel Lambert were named to the committee on scholarships and course of study. The committee on instructors and teachers consisted of Daniel Lambert and P. P. Kelley – Edmund Kelley and J. R. Smith were added to this committee on July 10th. The advertising committee was Joseph Smith, J. R. Smith and Edmund Kelley.

The Board of Directors met in the Administration (College) Building on June 25, 1896, which was before the building had been completed.

Joseph Smith resigned as the board's president on July 2, 1899, but continued as a board member.

By action of the RLDS General Conference of April 1900, the Board of Directors merged with the Board of Trustees.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees first met as Graceland College Building Committee on April 30, 1895 at 10 a.m. in the Herald House office. They elected the following officers: chairman Joseph Smith III, secretary D. F. Nicholson, and treasurer William Anderson. Also present was Edmund L. Kelley; Robert Winning, E. A. Blakeslee and Ellis Short were absent.

On May 2, 1895, the board's third meeting held at 1 p.m. at the Herald House office, the committee officially approved the name “Graceland College.” During this meeting the committee became known as the Board of Trustees and selected membership terms by ballot. Three-year terms went to E. A. Blakeslee and Ellis Short; two-year terms went to William Anderson and Joseph Smith III; and, one-year terms went to Edmund L. Kelley, Daniel Anderson and Robert Winning.

Joseph Smith remained the board's president; D. F. Nicholson, not officially a member of the board, became the secretary; and William Anderson was named treasurer. Those who were present for this meeting were Joseph Smith III, Edmund L. Kelley, William Anderson and Daniel Anderson.

By action of the RLDS General Conference of April 1900, the Board of Directors merged with the Board of Trustees. Original members of the newly combined board were: president William Anderson, secretary I. W. Allender, treasurer Daniel Anderson, Jeremiah A. Gunsolley, J. H. Hansen, R. M. Elvin and William Leeka.

Beginning in 1978, the board's size went through several changes so that the group's background and expertise could expand. The Board of Trustees grew to a membership of 12 in 1978; a membership of 18 in 1986; and, a membership of 24 in 1990.
