The Osceola Democrat Osceola, Clarke Co. Iowa September 17, 1908 Weldon News - Mrs. Mary McFarland went to Osceola Thursday to spend a day or two with her daughter Mrs. T. N. Keeran. - Mrs. Mont Stevens and children left Thursday for her home at Redlands, California after an extended visit with relatives and friends in Weldon and other parts of Iowa. - Miss Mabel Hodges left Saturday for Decatur where she will teach the primary department of the school. - The Hebron Ladies Aid Society met Saturday in Weldon at the home of Mrs. J. I. Wade. The Hebron women are to be commended for their efforts to keep their country church in repair and the cemetery adjacent in good order. - Miss Jennie Landis has been away from the store of McAlister & Co. on vacation for the past week. - Lou London of Osceola was in this city on business Thursday. His wife and daughter accompanied him. They dined with their aunt Mrs. Sarah Lowe. - T. N. Keeran of Osceola was on our streets Friday. - Robert Mitchell and wife returned from Pleasanton Tuesday of last week where they had gone several days before to visit the latters sister Mrs. Milo Potter and family. - Mesdames Mary Wilson and Nancy Gregg came down from Osceola Saturday and made an over Sunday visit in Weldon at the home of Mrs. Philene McVay and other friends. Mrs. Wilson was a resident of Weldon for several years before going to Osceola. - A. J. Davis left Friday for Jamesport, Mo to visit his brother Isaac Davis. - L. G. Parker pastor of the Christian church at this place tendered his resignation last Sunday to take effect in two weeks. The only reason for giving up his work here is it being too far from Des Moines where he is a student at Drake University. He will begin work as pastor of the Altoona Christian church the first of Oct. It is not yet known what minister will take the place that is soon to be left vacant by Mr. Parker. - Both Rev. Bourne and Rev. G. E. Mitchell were in attendance at District Conference held at Clarinda the past week consequently there was no preaching service at the M.E> church Sunday. The congregations of the town worshiped together at the Christian church both morning and evening. - Miss Eva Tillotson and her sister Merle attended the carnival at Humeston Saturday. - G. N. Ayres pleasantly surprised his many friends in Weldon by coming in unexpectedly Tuesday from his home in Oklahoma City to which place he and his family moved in June. He reports being well pleased with his new home. - C. A. McCartney of Kansas City was called to Weldon on business last week. - W. C. Lowe, Marvin Wick and another young man or two came down from Osceola Thursday morning early enough to take the morning train for Humeston with the Weldon band boys where they played for the three days carnival. - J. A. McAlister has purchased the Mrs Cora Sprinkle property in the west part of town and we understand will occupy it with his family as soon as vacated. - Harry McAlister and wife came down from Red Oak and spent Sunday in this city at the home of the formers parents. - Geo. Lowman returned from Geddes S Dakota Wednesday. - E. A. Lockwood is having a cottage built on the lots that were formerly occupied by the old printing office south of the Central Telephone office. The Osceola Democrat Osceola, Clarke Co. Iowa September 24, 1908 Newspaper Sold. The Van Wert Record which some time ago was purchased by Mr. BELDING of Van Wert was recently sold to H.O. TUTTLE of that city. Mr. O.H. LOLLEN, superintendent of the Van Wert schools, who has been editing the paper will be associated with Mr. TUTTLE for a few months. -A very sad accident occurred at Leon last week when the small child of Drew KELLEY fell into a ten gallon jar of water and was drowned before anyone discovered it. -Round Prairie. Wedding bells were heard Wednesday. Mr. Henry JAMISON* and Miss Bessie CHIPP; and Mr. William WADSWORTH and Miss Mabel WARD were the joyful parties. -Wednesday afternoon of last week at the home of Rev. E.O. ROGERS occurred the marriage of W.F. WADSWORTH to Miss Mabel WARD and the marriage of H.S. JIMMERSON* to Miss Bessie CHIPP. Both couples are residents of Grand River. Rev. ROGERS performed the double wedding ceremony and the newly married folks left that day for their home. [*submitter's note: the double wedding was reported in 2 different notices of the same paper; please note the surname of the groom was given as Jamison in the first announcement and as Jimmerson, in the second!] Weldon News -Mrs. Joseph WORDEN died at her home south of Weldon Friday. The funeral was held at her late home Sunday afternoon the sermon being preached by Rev. G.E. MITCHELL. A large crowd was in attendance. Interment was at Metier cemetery. -Christina, the little 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dorman TRISLER met with an accident one day last week that she will not soon forget even if it was not as serious as it might have been. She attempted to draw water from a well equipped with a pully and two buckets and while she was bending over the rather low curb the support holding the hook and pully gave way and in falling the hook caught in a braid of the child's hair pulling her head down but she held to the top of the curb with her hands and screamed for help. Her mother happened to be near and soon released her from her perilous position but with the loss of some of her hair. -A bevy of 9 little girls from 10-12 years old left on the early train Saturday for LeRoy where they spent the time between trains with their former schoolmate Vera DOUGHTEN [Daughton?]. Their names are Mabel and Nellie McALISTER, Lulu HISCOX, Josephine COFFEY, Esther TILLOTSON, Frances LUCE, Cecil DUNN and Lena THOMPSON. -Giles SMITH of Albany, Mo., is visiting at the home of his sister Mrs. Robert MITCHELL near Weldon. -Johnny WALLACE returned with his fast horse from the races Friday. He has been away six or eight weeks. -DECKER and REXOAT shipped 10 car loads of fine feeding cattle from Ill to Weldon last week from which place they were driven to their stock farm south of town. -Miss Rilla EDDY of Osceola came Saturday and made an over Sunday visit with home folks. -Dr. O.P. JAMISON went to Des Moines Saturday to visit his wife who is still at the hospital but who is doing well. The doctor reports her as gaining strength and will probably be able to leave the hospital in two weeks. -Clarence EDDY left Monday afternoon for Cleveland, Ohio where he holds a position as one of the faculty in the college. -Our depot agent Argus TILLOTSON and Roy McALISTER left last week for Colorado where they will spend a short vacation in recreation. -Weaver CRICHFIELD came down from Lacelle Sunday to spend the day with his mother here.
