Pfc. Adrian B. Carr, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Ross J. Carr of Grand River, owned and operated the last store in Westerville. He closed the store upon his induction into the U.S. Army in April of 1942. Adrian went overseas in August of 1944, serving in France and Belgium before going with the First Army to Holland and Germany. Adrian was killed in action in Germany on November 16, 1944. He left a wife, Mary Carr, who received his posthumously awarded Purple Heart.
Pfc. Carr was interred at Henri-Chappell American Cemetery and Memorial, Henri-Chappell, Belgium.

Milton Keith Badgerow was captured and held as a Japanese prisoner of war.
He died July 22, 1942 and was buried in the Philippines.
Pvt. Badgerow was the son of John Floyd and Meta Elizabeth Badgerow.

Sgt. Lloyd Leon Carter
was serving with the U.S. Army in the 515th Bomb Squadron of the 376th Bomb Group overseas during World War II. He was reported as missing in action over Austria on February 24, 1944. Later he was declared killed in action on February 23, 1944.

Pvt. Henry E. Clark,
the son of Cliva Edward & Gertrude May Clark of Garden Grove, Iowa, served in the U.S. Army with the 83rd Division, 330th Infantry. He was killed in action on August 11, 1944 in France. Pvt. Clark was interred at Garden Grove Cemetery.

Pfc. CHARLES BOYD COONTZ,
was killed on Anguar Island near the Philippines, September 17 [1944].
Pfc. COONTZ was a member of the eighty-first division.
He is a graduate of the Garden Grove high school.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. [Durbin B. & Lena B.] COONTZ
 of near Garden Grove.
Memorial services were held at the Methodist church in Garden Grove Sunday.

Pvt. Leslie Dane Petty, son of Alfred and Rosa Bell (Ward) Petty, was born September 30, 1906 at Woodland, Decatur County, Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 17, 1943 at Camp Dodge, and served with Company C, 119th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division. Pvt. Petty was killed in action October 16, 1944 in Germany. Pvt. Petty's body was returned to the United States in 1948 and he was re-interred at Shields Cemetery, Decatur County, Iowa.

T/5 Ephraim E. Wheeler, was born August 16, 1913, in Decatur County, Iowa, the son of Clifford S. "Cliff" and Gertrude May "Gertie" (Kizzare) Wheeler. He served in World War II with Company E, Ordnance Department of the U.S. Army. He was killed in action December 30, 1944 in Belgium. He was interred at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Davis City, Iowa.

TEC5 Paul Eugene Adair
He was inducted into the Army Dec. 15, 1942 and attended Fr. Custer, Michigan; Camp McCoy, Wisconsin; Camp Tyson, Tenn.; He was promoted to PFC August 8, 1943 and to T/5 Oct. 14, 1943. He is with the 3803 I. M. Truck Co. His next of kin are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. LEONARD GUY ADAIR. T/5 PAUL ADAIR, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. ADAIR, who is stationed in England, wrote his parents in a letter dated June 8, that he was just fine and enjoyed driving a truck in that country. He sent a British edition of “The Yank.”

Elmo Vieth Barnum is a commanding officer aboard a landing craft control ship.
He survived six amphibious invasions during which many of his shipmates were killed.
He and other survivors were awarded the Navy's second top honor, the Silver Cross.

2nd Lt. William "Bill" Barger, the son of Wilfred B. and Margaret E. (Maloney) Barger, served as Unit Commander HQ Co., 17th Airborne Field Artillery Division. He served 18 months in England, France, Belgium and Germany, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He was re-assigned to the 101st AB Division as a member of their undefeated football team then transferred to the 82nd AB Division to return home to the U.S. as Unit Commander on the Queen Mary. He marched in the huge New York City ticker tape parade in January 1946.

born Sept. 16, 1921, was inducted into the Army Air Corps. Sept. 1942. He attended Ft. Logan before being sent over-seas in December 1943. He returned to the states in Sept. 1944 and he is now stationed at Santa Anna, Calif. His next of kin is his wife, Jeanne Cotton Curthright.

MM 3/C Raymond E. Curtright, born June 5, 1923, was inducted into the Navy Feb. 1943. He received his Boot training at Farragut, Idaho and later was overseas duty in the Pacific. He returned to the states Sept. 14, 1944 but was sent back to the Pacific Theatre of War shortly thereafter. His next of kin are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Curtright.

Robert Dale Miller was born in Burrell Township, Decatur County. He entered the service June, 1942 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. After 2 ½ months training at Fort Leonard, Missouri, he was sent to March Field, California. His over sea assignments include New Caledonia, New Guadalcanal, New Georgia Islands, and the Philippine Islands. T/3 Miller was with the 955th Engineer Topographic Company Aviation attached to the Far East Air Force and his serial number is [omitted]. He was awarded the Bronze Star. His next of kin is his wife, Gretchen. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Miller of Weldon, Iowa.

LA VERNE NORMAN, second class seaman, who is enjoying a leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. D. NORMAN of New London, formerly of Leon, was here with his parents and his girl friend, Miss DARLENE SCADDEN of Burlington, Monday. Seaman NORMAN has escaped injury twice while being under fire. The first time his ship was sunk by shell fire in the battle near the Solomon Islands. The second time, his destroyer was bombed in the Messina Straits before Italy surrendered. However, the destroyer is being repaired but it was placed out of commission for a time.

Betty La Nelle Mills was born November 27, 1922 at Leon, Iowa. She entered the service April 3, 1943 a member of the Marine Womens' Reserve. She attended Hunters College, Bronx, New York City, Camp LeJeune, New River, North Carolina. State Teachers College Milledgeville, Georgia, M.C.A.S. Cherry Point, N. Carolina. Her next of kin are her parents Mr. and Mrs. Clifton [and Nellie] Mills of California, formerly of Leon, Iowa.

Dean Neil Newton, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Newton, was born August 30, 1932 at Kellerton, Iowa. He resided in Leon, Iowa, and enlisted in the U.S. Army October 6, 1952. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany with the occupation army, 6th Infantry Regiment.

T/5 Donald Rex Newton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Elmore [and Jessie Laura (Sissel) Newton, of Grand River, Iowa, was born August 27, 1921 at Kellerton, Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 12, 1942 at Camp Dodge, then at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and served with the medical corps, 120th Station Hospital. He was stationed at Camp Barkeley, Texas and Camp Shank, New York. He was promoted to PFC on February 9, 1943, then to surgical technician, 5th grade. T/5 Newton served in Africa and the Middle East and returned state side on June 23, 1943. T/5 Newton attended schools at the Scott and Cornstalk rural Schools at Kellerton, Welcome rural school at Grand River, Lamoni Public School at Lamoni. He married Helen Ralina Kemp on August 12, 1945. T/5 Newton was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.

Marion K. Priest, born Nov. 7, 1925, was inducted into the army Feb. 15, 1944. He attended Camp Croft, S. C. and Camp Shelby, Miss. before being sent overseas in Nov., 1944. He saw action in France and Belgium, where he was later wounded. He received the Purple Heart award. His next of kin are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E. Priest of Decatur, Ia.

Edwin Vaughn Smyth was born Sept. 14, 1899 at Des Moines, Iowa. He enlisted in the Navy in October 1942 and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station near Chicago. He held the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. He stayed at there for 8 months until he was released because of age limit.

Orville Edwin Spicer, born February 10, 1910 in Leon, Iowa. Educated in Leon and Decatur County Rural Schools, inducted Dec. 14, 1942 at Camp Dodge. He was stationed at Camp Haan and Camp Irwin, California. Serial number [omitted for privacy] – of the Anti-Aircraft division of the Army. Promoted to PFC in February 1943, Corporal August 1943. Injured by an army truck accident Jan. 10, 1944 and entered Army Airfield Hospital, Victorville, California. Corporal Spicer’s next of kin is his wife, Rowena, and his parents are Rollie L. Spicer and Iola Main Spicer.

He attended Camp Swift, Texas and Fort Bragg, So. Carolina. He was honorably discharged from the army April 4, 1943. He is now working in a defense plant in Ypsilantia, Michigan. Doris enlisted in Women's Reserve United States Marine Corps, in Des Moines, Iowa, February, 1943.

Received her basic training, Cherry Point, North Carolina. She attended Hunter College for special qualifications for Weather Observer, after this she received the rank of Technical Sergeant and trained recruits there after.

Received Honorable Discharge on September 27, 1945.
