In 1956, a $500,000  U. S. Army weather station and radar aircraft warning site was established five miles northeast of Dallas Center.  The 38-acre area was acquired by the government following a condemnation action from Brenton Bros., Inc.  The radar station included a radar tower, water system and 15 buildings.  Some of these buildings were a large mess hall, airmen's barracks for approximately a 65-man crew, officers' quarters, orderly room, air police booth, a motor pool housing a fire truck and other vehicles for the unit as well as one building which served as a dispensary, post exchange and recreation room.

The Dallas Center site was located on the highest point within a radius of 100 miles and was designated the 650th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron of the 31st Air Division which is responsible for a five state area including Iowa.  The site was used only about two years, as detection equipment developed more recently made the operation obsolete.  In 1960, the site was virtually abandoned and was sold.  Only a small area where the radar tower stands, was retained by the government.  Presently, the tower is serviced periodically and automatically controlled from the Waverly, Iowa Air Defense Command.
