Hanna (Jurgensen) Voss (1893 - 1968)

Mrs. John Voss

Mrs. John Voss passed away at the Memorial Hospital on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16. She had been in failing health in recent months and had been hospitalized at various times coming to the hospital for the last time on Nov. 14.

Hanna Magdalene Jurgensen, daughter of Edlef Jurgensen and his wife, Magdalene nee Peetz, was born Aug. 29, 1893 in Hanover Township, Crawford County. In early infancy she was baptized and later became a communicant member of the Lutheran Church by the rite on confirmation in St. John Lutheran Church at Charter Oak. On Dec. 19, 1917 she was married to John Voss and after their marriage they farmed in Goodrich Township until coming to live in Denison in 1966.

Surviving her death are her husband, John Voss; two sons, Ervin of Schleswig and Gilbert of Storm Lake and one daughter, Mrs. Maxine Kruger of Denison; twelve grandchildren and one-great grandchild; two sisters: Mrs. Caroline Grell and Mrs. Mary Preuss of Ricketts, and one brother, John of Denison. Five brothers, Moritz, Jurgen, Herman, Edlef and Hans preceeded her in death.

The funeral service was held on Nov. 19 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies quartet with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: John Bascom, Edlef Grell, Earl Hennings, Edlef Jurgensen, Gerald Jurgensen and Joe Remmes.

Hazel Margery (Pollock) Voss (1920 - 1987)

Hazel Voss

Hazel Margery Voss, 67, of Onawa, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1987, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa followeing a three-month illness due to cancer.

Hazel, the daughter of Joe and Ruth (Claudy) Pollock was born on April 3, 1920 near Denison. She attended a rural school and later the grades in Denison. She was graduated from the Denison High School in 1938. She obtained her Normal Training Certificate and taught in rural school for two years.

On May 17, 1940 Hazel was united in marriage to Merlin E. Voss also of Denison. She resumed teaching in 1943 during World War II when Merlin served in the Armed Forces. Upon his return, they lived in Ida Grove and then moved to Onawa in 1963.

To this marriage three sons and one daughter were born. She is survived by sons: Randall and Carol Voss of Cherokee, Terry and Sheryl Voss of Des Moines, Bill and Peggy Voss of Onawa and daughter, Jane R. Voss of Bloomington, Minn.; as well as several grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Pollock of Vail and Joseph R. Pollock of Forest Grove, Or.; two sisters, Helen (Mrs. F.V. Powell) and Muriel (Mrs. Eldon Brodersen) and her husband's mother, Emma Voss of Denison.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Merlin in 1985, her parents, Joe and Ruth Pollock and one brother Charles Pollock.

Funeral services were held at the Faith Lutheran Church (ALC) in Onawa at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept 24. The Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa had charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Roger and Larry Broderson, Brion and Brett Voss, Vernis Nihsen and Mark Torrence. Burial Services were conducted at the Onawa Cemetery.

Hilda (Plagge) Vogt (1907 - 1985)

Hilda Vogt

Hilda Vogt was born on August 27, 1907, in Charter Oak Township, Crawford County, the daughter of Henry and Augusta Koenig Plagge. She died on Wednesday evening, March 27, at the Denison Care Center in Denison at the age of 77.

Hilda Spent her formative years on her familys farm in Crawford County. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On January 11, 1928, Hilda was united in marraige to Henry Vogt at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they farmed near Charter Oak. In 1959 they moved into the Charter Oak Community. Henry died in 1962. Hilda continued to make Charter Oak her home until recently entering the Denison Care Center due to failing health.

In addition to her parents and husband, Hilda was preceded in death by four brothers, Adolph, Henry, Fred, and Bill. and four sisters, Leona, Minnie, Lena, and Annie.

Survivors include two sons, Delaine of Denison, and Ralph of Charter Oak, eleven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. at St John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated at the services and graveside rites. The St. John's Ladies' Choir with Mrs. Darlene Clausen as organist proveided music for the services. Hymns for the services included "Im But a Stranger Here" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

Serving as pallbearers were Verdell Hintz, Dennis Plagge, Gerald Vogt, William Namanny, Lavern Plagge and Ronald Maack. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Jacob Fredrich Volkmann (1892 - 1968)

Services Held For Jacob Volkmann on Friday Sept. 6

Funeral services for Jacob Volkmann were held at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, on Friday September 6, 1968, with Rev R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. The organist was Mrs. John Evers. Members of the duet, Mrs. Donald Meyer, and Mrs. Harlan Buffum sang the hymns "Abide With Me" and "Beyond The Sunset".

Jacob Fredrich Volkmann was born on April 17, 1892 to Emil and Agnes (Petersen) Volkmann. He had been a resident of this community since 1926. On August 25, 1915 he was married to Agnes Grell. Two daughters were born to this family, Velma (Wife of Walter Bliesmann) and Luella who resided at home with her father, Mr. Volkmann, who was now retired, had been custodian of the local school for thirty-six years, and had faithfully filled that position. He passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on September 4, 1968 after a brief illness.

Survivors include two daughters, Velma, Wife of Walter Bliesmann, and Luella, two grandchildren, four sisters, Christian Reincke, Anna Volkmann, Edna Stegemann of Schleswig, Mrs A. E. Binhaber of Callendar, Iowa, and one brother Herbert Volkmann of South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes, his parents, and two brothers.

Pallbearers were Ernie Grell, John Grell, Leslie Grell, Clarence Weise, Palmer Volkmann, and Clarence Reincke.

John Vogt, Jr. (1906 - 1987)

For Jack Vogt

John Vogt, Jr., better known as Jack, was born on December 9, 1906, in Hanover Township, Iowa, the son of Johannas Vogt and Mary Blunk Vogt. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on October 12, 1987, at the age of 80 years.

Jack was baptized on March 15, 1907, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He received his early education in the rural school in Hanover Township.

On October 20, 1926, Jack and Minnie Namanny of Ricketts were united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. To this union seven children were born.

After marriage, they settled on a farm in Crawford County. They farmed until retiring in 1972. They moved to rickets in 1976, where they lived until August 27, when Jack entered Eventide Lutheran Home.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by one daughter, Unabell Vogt; one son, Leonard Vogt; and two brothers, Henry and Herbert Vogt.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie of Ricketts; sons, DeWayne Vogt and his wife, Helen of Galva, Gerald Vogt and his wife, Marcelene of Dow City and Donald Vogt of Omaha, Nebraska; daughters, Yvonne and her husband, Tom Brown of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Colleen and her husband, Ron Ashfield of Portland, Oregon; seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Plagge and Mrs. Vern (Hazel) Hintz, both of Denison.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, October 15, 1987, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Vicar Robert Hines officiated. Mrs. Darold Kahl served as organist for Henry Henningsen soloist. Selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Abide With Me". Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison.

Serving as pallbearers were Steven Brown, Russell Brown, James Brown, Rick Vogt, Randy Vogt, Curtis Vogt, Mark Vogt and Todd Fitzpatrick.

Laura Voss nee Groth (1884 - 1969)

Funeral Services for Laura Voss Held Friday

Services for Laura Voss were conducted Friday, November 28, 1969 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig by the Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff.

Mrs. Voss passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 1969 at the Denison Hospital following a lingering illness. She attained the age of 75 years, 9 months, and 6 days. Mrs. John Evers served as organist at the services with Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Evelyn Martens singing the two hymns "Abide With Me" and "The Lord Is My Shepard".

Laura Voss nee Groth was born on February 20, 1884 to Christopher and Margaretha (Rath) Voss. On January 2, 1918 she was married to Fred Voss. Mr. Voss preceded his wife in death in 1962, as did her parents and two brothers. She was a resident of this community since 1948, and was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Mabel, (Mrs. William Luth) of Charter Oak, one son Leonard Voss of Walker, ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother, John Groth.

Pallbearers were LeRoy Fredricks, Harry Groth, Wilbert Groth, Jerald Jurgensen, Erwin Voss and Marvin Voss. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.
