Gerald Jurgensen (1930 - 1978)

Gerald Jurgensen was born June 13, 1930 at Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Herman and Rose Jurgensen. He died Aug. 30, 1978 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 48.

Gerald was raised in Hanover Township on a family farm where he attended the rural schools. He later attended Denison High School where he graduated in 1948. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison.

On Dec. 9, 1951 he was united to marriage to Lorraine Baker at Denison. They made their home on Gerald's home place where they lived and farmed. Gerald was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and held membership in the Men's Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son Roger. Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Denison, three daughters, Rhonda, Mrs. Gary Hank of Wakefield, Nebr., Denise at home, and Robin, Mrs. Charles Meyer of Denison and one son Barry, also at home. By two grandchildren and one sister Mrs. Ruby Johannsen of Denison.

Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack Heck and Rev. Gary Hoffstetter officiated at the services. Music was provided by Mrs. Fred Rabe and Henry Henningsen. Pallbearers were Elmer Denker, Vernon Brodersen, Milford Nemitz, Louis Petersen, Roger Walde and Robert Henningsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Patrick R. Delanty (1938 - 1999)

Charter Oak, Iowa - Patrick R. Delanty, 60, of Charter Oak died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999 at a Denison, Iowa, hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church at Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Frank Nemmers and the Rev. Andrew Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today, with a Scripture and rosary service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Delanty was born Oct. 30, 1938, at Sioux City to Raymond Joseph and Teresa (Marley) Delanty. He graduated from Onawa High School in 1956 and from Iowa State University in 1961 with a major in Agriculture Engineering and a minor in Civil Engineering. He worked with the Army Corp of Engineers in the planning section until 1961, when he returned to help with the family farm following his father's death.

He married Ann Templeton on Feb. 16, 1961, at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa. The couple resided their entire married life on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa.

He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at Denison, and the Iowa Soybean Association, where he was state representative for District IV for 12 years, including membership chairman and president of ISA. He also served on the board for six years, including two years on the Executive Committee. He received the lifetime achievement award from ASA in 1998. He was one of five members to serve on the Chicago Board of Trade Task Force. He served on Dean Topals Executive Committee for the College of Agriculture for three years and was currently serving on the Agriculture Engineering Board at Iowa State, helping to plan a new facility for the University.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Teresa Rae of Ames, Iowa, and Sarah Ann of Charter Oak; four sisters, Mary Anne and her husband Tony Sullivan of Ankeny, Iowa, Sarah Rose and her husband Ali Zamoon of Kuwait; Rita R. of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sheila Coyle of South Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Danny.

Jolene Ann Jors (1941 - 1985)

Jolene Ann Jors was born on February 1, 1941 near Schleswig, the daughter of John and Anna Marie Hinrichsen Jors. She died November 28, 1985 at her home in Aurora, Colorado following a sudden heart attack at the age of 44.

Jolene was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, and was later confirmed. She moved with her family to Cumberland in 1946. She received her formal education in the Cumberland-Massena schools. Following graduation from the Cumberland-Massena High School Jolene moved to Omaha where she worked for several years. She later moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she was employed several years at city hall and later by the Internal Revenue Service. In 1981 she made her home in Aurora, Colorado where she began her career with United National Bank.

Jolene was preceded in death by her father John B. Jors, her step-father Henry Reichert, and step-mother Bertha Jors.

Survivors include her mother Anna Marie Reichert of Denison, one brother Lee Jors and wife Joan of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and a nephew John Henry Jors at home in Waukesha, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 6, 1985 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Her remains were cremated at the Englewood Crematory and were interred in the Grant Township Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Dr. Scott Woodworth officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Mr. Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included God Will Take Care Of You and The Lord's Prayer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Timothy Todd Martens (1987 - 2007)

Timothy Todd Martens was born May 14, 1987, the son of Todd and Candace Ueding Martens. He passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2007 in Hurley, Wisconsin at the age of nineteen.

Tim was born in Denison, Iowa and received his education at Zion Lutheran School and graduated from the Denison Community High School with the class of 2005. He was baptized in Christ on June 14, 1987 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on April 29, 2001. After completing his education, in addition to farming he worked for Crawford County Ice before becoming employed by Slechta Masonry.

He was an avid outdoors man who loved life. He enjoyed horseback riding, boating, fishing, hunting and farming. Tim also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, 4 wheeler and snowmobile. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Tim was preceded in death by his Papa Clark Martens, great-grandparents, Harry and Ethel Martens, Vernon Neuman, Vern Neilsen and Alice Storm. Survivors include his parents, Todd and Candace and sister, Jessica of Deloit; grandparents, Connie and Terry Crawford of Denison; Carol and Robert Nielsen of Dow City; great-grandparents, Helen Neuman of Denison, Lorretta Neilsen of Sioux City and Lyle Storm of Lyons, Nebraska; also numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Tim was a friend to all, and behind every tear that is shed there is a memory that Tim created.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 5, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymn "Jesus Loves Me". Soloist, Eldon Hardekopf sang "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "On Eagle's Wings" and CD "Who You'd be Today" by Kenny Chesney was played. Pallbearers were: Landon Burhoop, Justin Poggensee, Joe Poggensee, Darren Slechta, Jake Sachau, Jerry Neilsen, Terry Ueding, Larry Neilsen, Gary Neilsen, Eric Martens, Travis Weier and Andy King. A time for sharing of memories was held at 6 P.M., Sunday at the Huebner Funeral Home. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas and Evening Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Elmer Quandt (1931 - 2000)

Donald Elmer Quandt was born June 3, 1931, the son of Elmer H. and Bernice Doakes Quandt. Donald was born in Plymouth County, near Sioux City, Iowa. He was baptized in infancy. He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa, on December 17, 1948. Donald graduated from Charter Oak High School on May 18, 1951.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 5, 1951 where following training, he served on the U.S.S. Logan. Donald received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy on May 18, 1955. He remained in California following his discharge, working at the Navy Shipyard at San Diego, California.

On November 11, 1955, Donald was united in marriage to Elma Dobbs. Two children, Richard and Karol, were born to this union.

On August 27, 1975, Donald was united in marriage to Mildred Webster. They continued to reside in California. In February, 1978, Donald and Mildred moved to Bremerton, Washington, later moving to Poulsbo, Washington. Following the death of his wife, Mildred, on April 1, 1998, Donald continued to make his home in Poulsbo. Due to ill health, Donald entered Martha and Mary Health Center, Poulsbo, Washington, March 1999, where he passed away on February 19, 2000. Private services will be held at a later date.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sisters, Bonnie Johannsen and Mary Lou Denker and her husband, Irwin of Denison; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Darwin Irvin Harm (1947 - 1996)

Darwin Irvin Harm was born December 16, 1947, the son of Irvin and Marlan Kastner Harm, Sr. He died on Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996 at his home in Denver, Colorado at the age of forty-nine.

Darwin was born in Ida Grove, Iowa. He was baptized February 22, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 15, 1962. He received in education in the Schleswig Community High School and graduated there with the class of 1966.

On January 22, 1966, Darwin was united in marriage to Diane Ernst at Grant Church near Schleswig, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two daughters Dee Dee and Danel. The past fifteen years he has lived in Denver, Colorado working in the construction industry.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cheryoleen and Carlan and his grandparents. He is survived by two daughters Dee Dee Smith, and her husband Mike of Killeen, Texas; Danel Kuhlmann and her husband, Chris of Newport News, Virginia; four grandchildren Devin, Tanner and Duncan Smith, and Ciara Kuhlmann; his parents, Irvin and Marlan Harm of Denison; two sisters, Coleen Bruhn and husband, Dennis of Schleswig; Rhonda Wessel and her husband Dale of Denison; and two brothers Irvin Jr. of Denison; and Rick Harm of Denver. Also many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Larry Boeck singing "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and congregational hymns "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Let All Together Praise Our God". Those serving as pallbearers were: Justin Wessel, Charles Harm, Jason Harm, Roger Harm, Barry Harm, Brent Harm and Craig Harm. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

James LeaRoy Fast (1939 - 1986)

James LeaRoy Fast was born January 30, 1939 in Denison, Iowa, the son of John and Bernice Bohm Fast. He died April 11, 1986 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 47.

James was educated in the rural schools of Crawford County and lived in the Denison area throughout his life. On November 14, 1961 James enlisted in the U.S. Army and was discharged on October 31, 1967. During this time, he served with the Battery E 78th Artillery at Ford Ord, Calif.

On April 25, 1964 James was united in marriage to Sharon Ann Schwenn at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and together they made their home in Denison. To this union, two sons and two daughters were born. For 17 years, James was employed at Farmland Foods and then became self-employed as a construction worker until his death.

Survivors include his wife Sharon Ann; two daughters, Patricia (Mrs. John) Shumate of Hinesville, Ga. and Jamie Sue at home; his mother, Bernice; and one granddaughter, Amanda Marie. Also, one brother, Jackie of Mena, Ark. and two sisters, Darlene (Mrs. John) Short of Denison and Sherlane (Mrs. James) Wingfield of Pacific Junction.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 14, 1986 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth C. Haydon officiated at the service and the graveside rites. Serving as Honorary Bearers were Joe Fast, Rickey Short, Scott Wingfield, Richard Wingfield, Darrell VonHoldt and Darwyn Lingle. Serving as pallbearers were Earl Fast, Clayton Fast, Robert Pester, Rick DeMey, Alvin Ogle and Bernard Hansen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Valgene Earl Hennings (1936 - 2005)

Valgene Earl Hennings was born October 15, 1936, the son of Earl Lloyd and Mabel Caroline Jurgensen Hennings. He died Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of sixty-nine.

Valgene was born in Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized November 8, 1936 and confirmed April 1, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education at Charter Oak Independent School, graduating with the class of 1954. He then attended college at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa after receiving a basketball scholarship.

On November 17, 1956, Val was united in marriage to Maedelle Lafrentz. The couple made their home on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of two daughters. In addition to farming, Val also drove trucks throughout his life.

He was a loving husband, and a caring father and grandfather who enjoyed his time he spent raising his horses and socializing with his family and friends. He served on the 6th district of Iowa Quarter Horse Association, and the Board of Western Iowa Expo, the Crawford County Fair Board, and was president of the Silver Spurs Saddle Club. He was a member of the Denison Chamber of Commerce and Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his father, Earl; one sister-in-law, Judy Hennings; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harold and Selma Lafrentz. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Mae; two daughters, Jeri Laubscher and her husband, Tim of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Kelly Hennings and her special friend, Troy Rosburg of Denison; two brothers, Verdeen and his wife, Georgia of Charter Oak, and Verle and his wife, Charlotte of Funk, Nebraska; one granddaughter, Louise Walker and her husband, Tanner of Maryville, Missouri; his mother, Mabel Hennings of Denison; one sister-in-law, Connie Teut and her special friend, Steve Schmidt of Schleswig; one brother-in-law, Don Lafrentz and his wife, Joy of Kiron; five nephews; one niece; one aunt, Edna Johannsen of Charter Oak; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 30, 2005 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Lift High the Cross". Those serving as pallbearers were: Jim McDonough, Wayne Bensel, Larry Grieme, Kent Grieme, Gail Ridgley and Leon Maas. The Zion Ladies aid served a lunch following the service and grave side rites. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Karen Kay (Kastner) Miller (1944 - 1992)

Karen Kay Miller, 47, of Schleswig died Sunday, October 18, 1992, at her home in Schleswig. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with burial in the Morgan Cemetery. Visitation was after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Mrs. Miller was born December 7, 1944, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Burness and LaVina (Klotz) Kastner. She grew up on a farm in Crawford County. She received her education in the Schleswig Community School and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1963. She attended Nettleton Business School in Sioux City for one year and was presently taking courses at Western Iowa Tech in Denison.

On July 18, 1966, she married Melvin Miller in the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The couple made their home in the Schleswig area. They started the Schleswig Transfer Co. in 1971, of which she was vice president and actively involved. Mrs. Miller was a member of the United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for 10 years and was a past member of the Women's Guild.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Wade Miller and his fiancee, Patti Kastner of Schleswig; a daughter, Wendy Miller of Sioux City and her friend, R.J. Bumann; a grandson, Dakota Miller; a sister, Roberta Jepsen and her husband, Steven of Schleswig; two brothers, Robert Kastner of Schleswig and Ronald Kastner of Yutan, Neb., and nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edward Kastner and a brother in infancy; her grandparents; and father-in-law.

Morelle George Else (1936 - 2000)

Morelle George Else was born November 7, 1936, the son of George and Lucille Hansen Else. He peacefully entered into his eternal rest Wednesday, October 11, 2000 at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of sixty-three.

Morelle was born in Crawford County, near Schleswig, Iowa and received his education in the Schleswig Community Schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1955. He was baptized in Christ December 20, 1936 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig and later confirmed there on Easter Sunday, March 25, 1951.

On October 16, 1955, Morelle was united in marriage to Ruth Jaacks at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple farmed the family farm near Schleswig and were blessed with three children. Morelle moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1972, where he worked until failing health in 1999.

Morelle was a very loving and caring father, grandfather, brother and son who enjoyed collecting family pictures and returning to Iowa for family celebrations. He also enjoyed watching football and was a fan of the Denver Broncos.

Morelle was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include three daughters, Lashelle Evans and her husband, Richard of Rock Port, Missouri; Tamela Johnson and her husband, Fredrick of Russell, Iowa; Renee Else Meyer and her husband, David of Cedar Falls, Iowa; life long friend, Ruth Bell of Denison; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Nicole, Randy, Russell and Paige Evans, Christina and Breanna Johnson, Alexandria Meyer; one sister, Marlys Grell and her husband, Lyle of Fort Collins, Colorado; his step-mother, Edna Else; one step-brother, Dale Huebner and his wife, Mary; one step-sister, Sally Sullivan and her husband, Tom, all of Carroll; one nephew, Cary Grell of St. Paul, Minnesota; one niece, Wendy Grell of Denver, Colorado; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 21, 2000 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor Linda Boggs officiated the service, with interment at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist, Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for Barb Buffum and Pam Gronau singing "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want" and congregational hymn "I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry". The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at Shorty's in Schleswig. The Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Delmer Rudolph Rath (1922 - 2002)

Delmer Rudolph Rath was born December 10, 1922, the son of Rudolph August and Bertha Johanna Bertfam Rath. He died Monday, October 7, 2002 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of seventy-nine.

Delmer was born on a farm in Washington Township, near Buck Grove, Iowa. He was baptized on April 29, 1923 at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa and later confirmed there on March 21, 1937. Delmer received his education in a rural school near his home and after completing his education he helped his family on the farm.

On June 30, 1950, Delmer was united in marriage to Margaret Russman. The couple made their home on a farm in Denison Township and were blessed with the birth of two children. Delmer enjoyed radio controlled airplanes, looking for arrow heads and motorcycles. He loved hunting and fishing, especially deep sea fishing in Mexico and Southern California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Phyllis Smith. Survivors include one son, Tim Rath and his wife, Pam of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one daughter, Vicki Gipson of Tucson, Arizona; three grandchildren; one sister, Marcia Johnson of Denison; two brothers, Wilbur Rath of Shiocton, Wisconsin; Wes Rath of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Grave side services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 11, 2002 at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev David Sewing officiated the service. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at Cronk's Restaurant. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Helen A. (Stodden) Boettger (1921 - 2003)

Helen A. (Stodden) Boettger was born November 24, 1921, the daughter of Albert and Amanda Stevers Stodden. She died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of eight-two.

Helen was born on a farm south of Ute, Iowa. She received her education at the Charter Oak Community School and after receiving her education, she taught school for a short time.

On April 11, 1942, Helen was united in marriage to Hugo H. Boettger at the Army Air Corps base in Portland, Oregon. After Hugo's discharge from the military in 1944, they returned to Paradise Township, where they farmed until retiring and moving to Denison in 1977.

Helen was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, the Paradise Sisters and the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved visiting and playing cards with her family. She also enjoyed flower gardening, doing needle work and working puzzle books.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugo in 1982; one sister, Evelyn Laubscher, two brothers, Francis and Vernon Stodden; a son-in-law, Ronald Neddermeyer, and a granddaughter, Julie Neddermeyer.

Survivors include her children, Beverly Fredericks and her husband, Raymond of Denison; Joleen Bridgeman and her husband, Verlin of Ute; John Boettger and his wife, Diane of Denison; Roger Boettger and his wife, Susan of Dow City; Myra Majors and her husband, Kenneth of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Terry Boettger of Denison; Duane Boettger and his wife, Janice of Dow City; Lynn Brown and her husband, James of Schleswig; Sharon Lapel and her husband, Danny of Vail; twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren; a brother, James Stodden and his wife, Joan of Effingham, Illinois; many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 15, 2003 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Edward Murray served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Organist Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Eldon Hardekopf as he sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagle's Wings". All of the Granddaughters served as honorary pallbearers. Those serving as pallbearers were: Scott Friedrichs, Joshua Majors, Jason Neddermeyer, Chris Lapel, David Boettger, Jared Neddermeyer, Ryan Boettger, Justin Neddermeyer, Jacob Boettger and Jeffery Boettger. Sunday prayer services included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served at the Parish Center by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Herman Albert Meiners (1923 - 2006)

Herman Albert, son of Herman and Frances (Korwes) Meiners, was born April 19, 1923, near Viola Center, Iowa. He attended school at Dedham and country school north of Denison. Following his schooling, Herman farmed with his father.

On February 25, 1952, Herman was united in marriage with Irene Groth at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Four children were born to this union. Herman and Irene farmed west of Manilla, until retiring in 2005. Herman was a member of Sacred Heart Church. Throughout the years, he held membership in the National Farmers Organization, enjoyed dancing, playing cards and checkers and watching television.

Due to failing health, Herman became a resident of the Manilla Manor in August of 2006. On Friday, November 3, 2006, Herman died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. He was 83 years, 6 months and 15 days of age.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Joe Meiners, George Meiners and wife Tillie, Eddie Meiners and Henry Meiners; a sister in infancy; brothers-in-law: Vertus Groth, Milroy Groth, Darlo Pirwitz and Arlo Jensen; and a sister-in-law Donna Groth.

He is survived by his wife Irene Meiners of Manilla; four children: Carol and husband Everett Dungan of Schleswig; Dale Meiners and Wife Shirley of Manilla; Michael Meiners and wife Judy of Omaha, Nebraska; and Patty and husband Chad Wiese of Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Brandi Dungan, Jeff Dungan, Zachery Meiners, Tanya Meiners, Jonathan Meiners, Matthew Meiners, Nathan Meiners, Pamela Etherington and husband Nate, and Derek Bruck; several in-laws: Rose Meiners of Carroll; Elaine Meiners of Manilla; Darlene Jensen of Schleswig; Wilbert Groth of Denison; Marlys Groth of Denison; Betty Meeves of Dunlap; Marilyn Pirwitz of Charter Oak; Margaret Moeller of Denison; and Marlene Schneider of Schleswig; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2006 at the Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa. Rev. Robert Gralapp served as Celebrant with Louie Meiners serving as Deacon. The Sacred Heart Choir sang, "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace", "Here I Am, Lord" and "On Eagle's Wings". Mass Servers were Kristin Vollsteadt and Kylie Holdsworth. Verna Ewoldt served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister. Gift bearers were Nathan Meiners, Matthew Meiners, Derek Bruck, Norbert Kasperbauer. Casketbearers were Wilbert Groth, Steve Vollstedt, Jim Nelson, Phil Stracke, Mark Meiners and Richard Meiners. Honorary Casketbearers were Herman's grandchildren. Interment was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Manilla.

Howard Albert Lenz (1925 - 1992)

Howard Albert Lenz was born April 2, 1925, the son of Henry Lenz and Ella Reinking Lenz in Morgan Township on the family farm west of Schleswig. He passed away on June 23, 1992 at the age of 67 years.

He received his early education at Morgan No. 6 rural school near his home. He graduated from Schleswig High School in 1942 and attended the University of Iowa. He served at Naval bases in Mississippi and Tennessee during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Lorenzen on June 9, 1945 in Gulfport, Mississippi. They lived on the family farm north of Schleswig. Howard was involved in farming and agricultural business for many years and for the last years of his life he was associated with L & W Realty in Schleswig. Howard was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1939. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church all his life and was involved in community organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ella and an only brother, Loren. He is survived by his wife Millie, two daughters Carol Gugat and husband Rick of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Donna Johnson of Rapid City, South Dakota, and five granddaughters: Cara, Brooke and Paige Gugat and Jami and Jackie Johnson.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 1992 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor Donald R. Wagner officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Roger Walter singing "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers were: VFW Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645. Military Honors were: VFW Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 in Schleswig, Iowa. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Joe L. Trexel (1925 - 2003)

Joe L. Trexel, 78, of International Falls, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Falls Good Samaritan Care Center in International Falls. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Evangelical Covenant Church in International Falls, with a color guard and flag presentation. Arrangements are under the direction of Green-Larson Mortuary in International Falls.

Mr. Trexel was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Denison, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, during World War II, as a signal man on a sub-chaser.

He married Darlene Ruth Malone on April 1, 1945. They were married for over 50 years. After the war, he worked at his uncle's photography studio in Newark, Ohio. He later worked for Genelli Photography Studio in Sioux City. He worked at his own studio in Salida, Colo., for a couple of years, then returned to Genelli Studio, where he worked for many years. In 1973, he opened Trexel Photography Studio in International Falls. He worked as a professional photographer consultant for Ultra Color Lab in Staples, Minn. Upon retiring, the couple resided in Salida and Pueblo, Col. He returned to International Falls in 1997.

He enjoyed time with his family and friends, fishing, playing cards and photography as well as a good sense of humor.

He is survived by his children, Steve (Deanna) Trexel of Coaldale, Colo., Sue (Bill) Rhodes of Moffat, Colo., Joel (Lynda) Trexel of Olney Springs, Colo., Brian (Dawn) Trexel of North St. Paul, Minn., Debbie (Kevin) Skifstad of International Falls, Jon (Juanita) Trexel of Ceresco, Neb., and Lisa (Todd) Olsen of Lacey, Wash.; 28 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Jane Hagemann of Ricketts, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy (Bob) Kamp of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Susan Trexel; his wife, Darlene; and an infant grandson, Kristofer Joel Trexel.

Leslie Kruger (1925 - 2003)

Leslie Kruger was born September 23, 1925, the son of Walter and Louise Hesse Kruger. He died at the Denison Care Center, Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at the age of seventy-seven.

Leslie was born on a farm near Charter Oak and moved with his family to a farm near Buck Grove. He received his education in rural schools near his home. After completing his education, Leslie helped on the family farm. On June 26, 1945, Leslie entered the United States Army, serving his country with the 93rd Airdrome Squad. He received his honorable discharge on December 27, 1946.

On March 24, 1952, Leslie was united in marriage to Maxine Voss. The couple settled on a farm near Vail until moving to Maxine's family farm near Schleswig. Subsequently, they farmed near Wall Lake until retiring to Denison in 1961, at which time, Leslie went to work for Farmland.

Leslie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was a member of their Voter's Assembly and served as an usher. He was also a member of the Denison American Legion and V.F.W. He was a past member of the Zion Lutheran School board, the KIWANIS and the Golden K's. Leslie enjoyed woodworking, remodeling and fixing things around their home. In his leisure time, he loved Sunday drives, getting together with the grandkids, family reunions and socializing in a game of cards.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Maxine in 2002. Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Van Sickler and her husband, Dennis of Ida Grove; Annette Kruger; Susan Jensen and her husband, Mark; Marilyn Kruger, all of Denison; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Pollack of Grants Pass, Oregon; Dorothy Petersen and her husband, Gene of Early; two brothers, Wayne Kruger and his wife, Deloris of Vail; Robert Kruger and his wife, Fran of Layton, Utah; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Vicar David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Jeanette Venzke provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Eldon Hardekopf as he sang "On Eagles Wings", and for congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Brandi Van Sickler, Brett Van Sickler, Garrett Kruger, Derek Jensen, Shae Leigh Jensen, Heather Jensen, Megan Jensen, and Bobbie Weber. Those serving as pallbearers were: Brandon Van Sickler, David Bannister, Lodean Voss, Bryan Van Sickler, Jeff Sharkey; and Chris Weber. Military rites were performed by the American Legion Post 8 of Denison, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

LaVina Wilma (Klotz) Kastner (1920 - 1979)

LaVina Wilma (Klotz) Kastner was born on April 11, 1920 in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Hugo and Ida Schmadeke Klotz. She Died on Sunday evening, November 11, 1979, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 59.

LaVina was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. She spent her early years on the family farm. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On June 12, 1940, LaVina was united in marriage to Burness Kastner at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. They made their home on a farm near Schleswig. LaVina was employed with Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove for a number of years. Mr. Kastner died in 1973 and LaVina has since continued to make her home on the farm. LaVina was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. She was also a member of the United Church of Christ Ladies Guild.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son Edward and two brothers.

Survivors include, two sons, Ronald of Omaha, Nebraska, and Robert of Schleswig, and two daughters, Karen, Mrs. Melvin Miller of Schleswig, and Roberta, Mrs. Steven Jepsen of Charter Oak, Iowa. Also by four grandchildren, Wade and Wendy Miller and Ryan and Stacey Kastner, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 14, 1979, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Gayle Knief, Gary Knief, Leo Klotz, Leon Klotz, Tony Kastner and Larry Klotz.

Marian Ruth (Jensen) Baker (1924 - 1993)

Marian Ruth (Jensen) Baker was born on December 20, 1924 to Arnold Herman and Katherine Brockson Jensen at Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized on January 21, 1925 and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on April 2, 1939. She was educated in the Schleswig Schools where she was active in basketball, and graduated from there with the class of 1942.

On June 20, 1943, Marian was united in marriage to Lloyd Baker at the Evangelical and Reformed Church, now known as the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. They made their home in rural Kiron and were blessed with six children.

Marian was very active in church work, belonging to Ladies Aid, the Quilting Group and a Bible Study Group. She loved to cook and bake and was employed in many cafes over the years and also cleaned houses for many area people. From 1986 to 1992 Marian had worked in Schleswig at CB Electronics.

Marian died suddenly Wednesday morning, December 29, 1993 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 69 years and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Larry; two sisters Sylvia Streck, and Lois Anderson.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of over fifty years, Lloyd of Kiron; three sons Jerry, Terry, and Garry, all of Kiron; two daughters and their husbands, Joanie and Jim Bral, and Jeanine and Tony Clark, all of Schleswig; two sisters Ramona (Sneezy) Nelson of Schleswig, and Erma Neumann and her husband Marvin of Schleswig; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 31, 1993 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron with the Rev. Hilmer J. Hafner officiating. Vocal selections for the service sang by the congregation included, "Just As I Am", "Lift High The Cross", and "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less". Lois Gronau served as organist.

Lester Otto Hagemann (1922 - 1991)

Lester Otto Hagemann, 68, of Battle Creek died Friday, May 31, 1991 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Services were held Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek with the Rev. Herbert Johnson officiating. Burial with military rites was at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Hagemann was born June 26, 1922 at Schleswig, son of Otto John and Amelia (Wulf) Hagemann. He served in the Army during WWII.

He married Bernice Pattison July 15, 1945 at Battle Creek. They farmed south of Battle Creek for over 37 years before retiring in December of 1984. He had served as part-time caretaker of Mt. Hope Cemetery for three years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek and the Maple Valley American Legion Post 364 in Battle Creek.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John (Cynthia) Peters of Battle Creek; a son, Douglas of Mapleton; three grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Groth of Schleswig; and a brother, Leonard of Schleswig. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Phyllis N. (Rath) Smith (1925 - 2002)

Phyllis N. (Rath) Smith was born on August 30, 1925 southwest of Buck Grove, Iowa in Washington Township to Rudolph and Bertha (Bertram) Rath. She died following surgery for an aneurysm on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Phyllis grew up in the Denison area where she graduated from high school with the class of 1943. Phyllis worked in Omaha and Denison.

She married Alfred W. Smith on March 19, 1946. They made their home in Carroll, Iowa where she continued to live after Al passed away on March 27, 1985. She became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, being baptized on October 15, 1983. She had a continuous part in community service work over the past 18 years. Phyllis was a good mother and homemaker, not working outside the home.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jo Fulitans and husband David of Des Moines, Iowa; five sons, Thomas and wife Teresa of Burlington, Wisconsin; Alan of Nevada, Iowa; James, Richard and William and wife Carla all of Carroll, Iowa; three grandsons, Tommy, Barry and Ryan; two great-grandsons; three brothers, Wilbur Rath of Wisconsin, Delmer Rath of Carroll, Wesley Rath of Denison, Iowa; a sister, Marcia Johnson of Denison, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at Kingdom Hall in Lake City, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2002 with burial of the remains at Carroll Cemetery in Carroll, Iowa.

Leon Theodore Bubke (1952 - 2006)

Leon Theodore (Pork) Bubke was born July 17, 1952, the son of Irvin and Edyth Bubke. Pork died October 12, 2006 while working in Davis, California at the age of fifty-four.

Pork was born in Battle Creek, Iowa and was baptized and confirmed into Christ at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa. Pork received his education in Schleswig where he graduated in 1970. He then went to the Peace Corp from 1976 to 1978 where he volunteered his agricultural knowledge in Malaysia. Upon returning to the United States, Pork attended Iowa Lakes Community College and obtained an associates degree in Agricultural Management in 1986.

Pork was united in marriage to Colleen Mencke in August of 2001 where they made their home in Denison, Iowa. Pork was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and a Green Bay Packers fan. Some of his most favorite hobbies were grilling and trying recipes he made up, gardening, and taking care of his plants. He loved to plant and talk to his tomatoes and other plants. He also enjoyed making road trips to Yellow Smoke Park at least once a day.

Pork was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Mike Bubke and David Schulte; one sister, Pam King; and a nephew, Jamey Schulte.

Pork is survived by his wife, Colleen of Denison; three children from previous marriages: Alexander of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Joshua of Spencer, Iowa; and Shauna and her husband, Shane of Parker, Colorado; three grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: Leroy Bubke of Harlan, Iowa; Barbara Lyman and her husband Gailen of Chandler, Arizona; Tom Bubke and his wife, Cathy of Schleswig, Iowa; Connie Lee and her husband, Dewey of Charter Oak, Iowa; Terry Schulte and his wife, LaVonne of Westphalia, Iowa; Donald Bubke and his wife, Virginia of Avoca, Iowa; Diann Taylor of Red Oak, Iowa; Roger Bubke and his wife, Alisa of Nemaha, Iowa; Maria Evans of Battle Creek, Michigan; Steven Bubke and his wife, Terri of Omaha, Nebraska; and Timothy Bubke and his wife, Lila of Schleswig, Iowa; his mother and father-in-law, Milton and Vera Morrison of Denison; one brother-in-law, Michael Morrison of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law: Jolene Strom of Denison; and Janet Rogers and her husband, Dennis of Monona, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a very special friend, James Fleming.

Funeral services were held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Reverend David Loeschen officiated the service and grave side rites. Burial was at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Dianne Furne provided the organ accompaniment for the hymnals. The congregation sang, "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" while Jennifer Lee, Darren Lee, and Dane Lee sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art" as a trio. After the ceremony at the cemetery the family invited everyone back to the church for a luncheon served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Family Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Seana Maureen (Stoneking) Odle (1956 - 1992)

Seana Maureen Odle was born on May 17, 1956, the daughter of Allen and Frances Menard Stoneking. She died on Sunday, April 12, 1992 at her home in Omaha at the age of 35 years.

Seana grew up in Schleswig, Iowa where she received her education in the Schleswig Community School and graduated from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1974. After graduation Seana continued her education at the Patricia Stevens Business College in Omaha and graduated there in 1975.

Seana subsequently worked for the Ramada Inn World Wide Reservations in Omaha until 1985 when she was transferred to the Reno, Nevada operations where she remained for two years before returning to Omaha. She was currently employed as a computer operator at the First Data Resource Company in Omaha and was continuing her education in accounting and management at the Metro Community College in Omaha.

On March 28, 1987, Seana was united in marriage to Gregrey Odle in Reno, Nevada and they were blessed with the birth of one son. Seana was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Omaha and was involved in many sporting activities such as bowling, swimming and softball.

Survivors include her son, Nicholas of Omaha; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Stoneking of Schleswig; two sisters, Michele Strack and her husband, Steven of Papillion, Nebraska; Denise Bright and her husband, Thomas of Fallbrook, California; one nephew Trevis Strack and one niece Tiffani Strack.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, 1992 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, Iowa with Fr. Gerald M. Fisch as Celebrant of the Mass. Barb Pfaltzgraff provided the organ accompaniment for the Mass. Dr. L.V. Samson was the Cantor. A Parish Wake Service was held Tuesday evening at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. Pallbearers were: John Menard Hubert, Maj. Thomas Bright, Paul Menard, David Menard, Leo Marley and Steve Strack. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Murle Charles Schraeder (1934 - 2005)

Murle Charles Schraeder was born July 20, 1934, the son of Charles and Arnada Hennings Schraeder. He died Thursday, May 12, 2005 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy.

Murle was born in Denison, Iowa. He received his education in the Denison Community Schools, graduating from the Denison High School with the class of 1953. Murle was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Montebello, California.

After returning from California in the early 1960's Murle cultivated a highly successful career in the beef industry. He was a highly sought after consultant and manager. Starting here in Denison at IBP and retiring as Plant Manager from Sunland Beef Company in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997, then returning home to Denison in 2000 to be with family and friends. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. He was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed sports, golfing, football, basketball, baseball, racing, hunting and fishing.

Murle was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Dennis and Robert Schraeder, Gilbert, Curtis and Addis Hansen; two sisters, Helen Speake and MaDonna Christiansen; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Speake and Orville Christiansen; and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Schraeder and Audrey Hansen.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam Capone and her husband, Bill of Sunland, California; Kim Schraeder of Weston, Missouri; one son, James Schraeder and his wife, Imelda of Peoria, Arizona; one step-son, Jeff Blasnitz and his wife, Wanda; and one step-daughter, Teresa Runkles and her husband, Bill, all of Nebraska; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, Clifford Hansen and his wife, Doris of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Marlys Schraeder of Denison; many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2005 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Edward Murray served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Altar servers were Andrew Crawford, Dylan Curnyn and Kyle Mathies, and serving as Lector was Jeffrey Blasnitz. Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Michael Schraeder, Nicholas Hansen, Richard Hansen, Mitch Hansen, Doug Hansen and Dan Hansen. Pallbearers were: David Schraeder, Randy Schraeder, Mike Schraeder, Steve Speake, Jerry Speake and Larry Voss. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., Sunday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone to the Parish Center to join them in fellowship and lunch, served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Ray Stockfleth (1934 - 2005)

Vernon Ray Stockfleth was born February 3, 1934, the son of Alvin and Bernice Hansen Stockfleth. He died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-one.

Vernon was born in Berne, Iowa, where he lived with his family on a farm. He was baptized in Christ at the Soldier Valley Lutheran Church in Soldier and later confirmed on March 30, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He received his education in a rural school near his home and graduated from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1952. In April of 1953, Vernon entered the United States Air Force, serving in Okinawa for eighteen months. He was honorably discharged in April 1957, having received the rank of Sergeant.

On October 14, 1956, Vernon was united in marriage to Marian Neubaum at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. The couple farmed near Ute from 1959 until 1963, when they moved to Schleswig and continued to farm until retiring in 1994. Vernon also drove truck for Farmland Industries in Denison from 1986 to 1994.

Vernon was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and loved volunteer work at the Lutheran Church's Mission Central near Mapleton. He was also a member of the Crawford County Pork Producers, the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities and was an avid reader. He also enjoyed working with old tractors and equipment.

He was preceded in death by his father, one grandson, Brent Stockfleth and one sister, Ilene Stockfleth, both in infancy. Survivors include his wife, Marian of Schleswig; one son, Neil Stockfleth and his wife, Beth of Sergeant Bluff; one daughter, Nola Salisbury of Longmont, Colorado; three grandchildren; his mother, Bernice Stockfleth of Mapleton; one sister, JoAnn Hill and her husband, Lloyd of Lees Summit, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art," "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," and "Lift High the Cross." The V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig served as pallbearers and provided military honors. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Scott A. Gronau (1971 - 2005)

Scott A. Gronau was born February 23, 1971, the son of Abe and Lynne Spack Gronau. He died Thursday, October 27, 2005 near Corning, Iowa at the age of thirty-four.

Scott was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ March 14, 1971 and confirmed March 3, 1985 at St. John Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. He received his education in the Denison schools, where he was very active in FFA, and lettered in football and wrestling. He graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1989. After graduation, he worked for Kluver Farms, and worked construction with Ronnie Barnett. He then began working with his father in their welding shop, and later purchased the business from him when his father retired. Scott began his own construction consulting company and worked as an independent contractor for Kragel, Inc. in Schleswig.

He was a loving, caring, hard-working and easy-going son, brother, uncle and friend who loved his family and friends very much. They were the center of his world and he always looked forward to spending time with them. Being the youngest in the family, Scott was continuously spoiled by his older sisters. He was a very particular person who had a great sense of humor and never ran out of stories to share with others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was dedicated to his work. In his spare time, Scott enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, golfing and watching his Pittsburgh Steelers play football. He also enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and listening to Elvis. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kiron, the Schleswig Country Club, the Schleswig Community Club, the American Legion Post No. 645 and V.F.W. Post No. 3930 on Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He is survived by his parents, Abe and Lynne Gronau of Schleswig; three sisters: Tracy Brus and her husband, Todd; Michelle Kasperbauer; and Monica Vazquez, all of Denison; two nieces and two nephews: Caitlin Namanny and Jessenia Vazquez; and Jake Brus and Jack Vazquez, all of Denison; other relatives and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. David Loeschen and Rev. Mark Hansen officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Nancy Bielenberg provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Beautiful Savior", "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and "Abide With Me, Fast Falls the Eventide". Honorary pallbearers were: Jamie Brosnahan, Kevin Georgius, Paul Outhouse, Kenny Miller, Rick Barnett, Sid Winquist and Ryan Kragel. Military Honors and pallbearers were the Schleswig American Legion Post 645. Richard William Harm (1953 - 1997)

Richard William Harm was born November 16, 1953, the son of Irvin and Marian Kastner Harm, Sr. He died of an accidental death near Schleswig, Iowa, Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at the age of forty-three.

Rick was born in Denison, Iowa, where he lived with his family. He was baptized in Christ December 18, 1953 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on April 7, 1968. He received his education in the Schleswig Community Schools and graduated from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1972.

In January of 1974, Rick entered the United States Army, serving his country. He spent one year of his military service overseas in Germany. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1977, Rick attended cosmetology school and worked as a hair stylist in Colorado and Nevada. He was working in the area at the present time.

In 1970, Rick was united in marriage to Mary Schoenfeld at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of one son, Christopher.

Rick was preceded in death by two sisters, Cheryoleen and Carlan, one brother, Darwin in December 1996 and his grandparents. Survivors include one son, Christopher Harm of Cornelius, North Carolina; his parents, Irvin and Marian Harm of Denison; two sisters, Coleen Bruhn and her husband, Dennis of Schleswig; his twin sister, Rhonda Wessel and her husband, Dale of Denison; one brother, Irvin Harm Jr. of Denison; also many aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 1997, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck, singing, "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and congregational hymns, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Virgene Schultz (1932 - 2001)

Virgene Schultz was born June 6, 1932, the son of Herman and Leona Schweiso Schultz. He died June 15, 2001 at the Morningside care center in Ida Grove, Iowa, at the age of sixty-nine.

Virgene was born near Kiron and raised in the Schleswig area. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He received his education in the Schleswig area, attending country school until the eighth grade.

On July 8, 1951, Virgene was united in marriage to Leola Hauschildt at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two sons, Craig and Brian. In 1974, Kurt and Kenton Gardner made their home with Leola and Virgene. Virgene farmed in the Schleswig area until 1986, when he began driving a truck for Farmland in Denison until retiring in 1995. In 1988, Virgene and Leola moved to Schleswig.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, who always had a special place in his heart for his family, especially his grandchildren. He was passionate about watching his children play sports and on one day attended three different baseball games in three different towns; and also loved fishing and bowling. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Leola of Schleswig; two sons, Craig and his wife, Marsha of Chariton, Iowa; Brian and his wife, Jill of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two special nephews, Kurt Gardner and his wife, Gail of Denton, Texas; Kenton Gardner and his wife, Lana of Sioux City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Maddie Schultz and Macy Schultz of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jessica Schultz of Omaha; Adam Schultz of Prairie City, Iowa, and Alex Schultz of Chariton, Iowa; three great-nieces and one great-nephew, Lindsey Gardner, Jessica Marie Gardner, Sean Gardner, and Haili Hansen of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister, Karen Frandsen and her husband, Bill of Cherokee, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

Wayne Christenson (1931 - 1998)

Wayne Christenson was born April 22, 1931, the son of Chris and Calista Wingrove Christenson. He died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Friday, October 23, 1998 at the age of sixty-seven.

Wayne was born in Dow City where he grew up receiving his education; he worked for various farmers in the region. In 1952, he joined the U.S. Marines serving in the infantry. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to the Dow City region.

On April 25, 1952, Wayne was united in marriage to Elsie Brown in Council Bluffs. The couple settled in Dow City and were blessed with the birth of four children. At first, Wayne operated a service station in Denison and creamery in Dow City. In 1960, he began his thirty-one year employment at Farmland Foods in Denison, and was a foreman there for many years, retiring in 1991.

Wayne was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed socializing with his family and friends, especially at a game of cards. Additionally, he enjoyed watching sporting events with his family, and just spending time with them. Camping and fishing occupied much of his retirement. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dow City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rickey in 1954; two brothers, Gerald and Albert and one sister Irma Smith. Survivors include his wife, Elsie "Babe" of Dow City; three daughters, Deb Fouts of Greeley, Colorado; Denise Weltz and her husband, Terry of Colo, Iowa; Darla Friedrichsen and her husband, Byron of Denison;·seven grandchildren, one of whom, Zack a grandson raised as a son; and two brothers, John and his wife, Helen of Fremont, Nebraska; and Andrew of Ft. Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Monday, October 26, 1998 at the United Methodist Church in Dow City, Iowa. Rev. Sue Ellen Sherman and Rev. Brian Sherman officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Jeanette Kuhlman provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, EveVonne Muff singing "On Wings of a Snow White Dove" and "How Great Thou Art". Darlene Mary (Monroe) Braasch (1941 - 1999)

Darlene Mary Braasch was born August 18, 1941, the daughter of Raymond and Florence Chisholm Monroe. She died at the Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Thursday, February 4, 1999 at the age of fifty-seven. Darlene was born in Iowa City, Iowa and received her education in rural schools near Ida Grove and Denison.

On December 17, 1960, Darlene was united in marriage to Kenneth Henry Braasch at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. The couple settled in Deloit, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of three children. Darlene was baptized in Christ and later confirmed on December 16, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

She worked at the Midwest Iowa Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center from 1978 until 1989. From 1989 to 1993 the couple owned and operated Okomo's Lounge in Deloit. In 1993, Darlene took a position at Wesco Industries, as supervisor of apartment living for four years.

Darlene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed making homemade ice cream and was especially known for her rabbit pie. In her leisure time, Darlene enjoyed bowling, socializing in a game of cards, camping and boating at Lake View.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Kenneth in 1992. Survivors include one son, Kevin Kenneth of Deloit; two daughters, Debra Rae Braasch and her fiancé, Jeff TenEyck of Deloit; Kelly Renee Young and her husband, Craig of Omaha; five grandchildren, Tyler, Kinsey, Trevor, Logan and Taylor; one brother, Donald Monroe and his wife, Lois of Ida Grove; two sisters, Donna Mae Neville and her husband, Ray of Granger; Doris Ann Jones of Battle Creek; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 8, 1999 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa; Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Joyce Julia Krohnke (1932 - 1999)

Joyce Julia Krohnke was born March 9, 1932, the daughter of Edward and Amanda Henkel Krohnke. She died at the Mallard View Care Center near Carroll, Iowa on February 3, 1999 at the age of sixty-six.

Joyce was born on a farm southeast of Schleswig, Iowa and attended a rural school near her home, where she resided with her parents until their deaths. From 1982 until 1990, Joyce made her home with her brother and sister-in-law, Edgar and Burenett Krohnke.

In 1990 she became a resident at the Crawford County Care Facility at Arion, Iowa until 1994, when she moved to the Mallard View Care Center near Carroll, where she resided until her death.

Joyce was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. She enjoyed the outdoors and animals. Her puppy, Fluffy, was a favorite when she was a young girl. Joyce loved books and magazines and carried them wherever she went. When her parents purchased a TV, she loved to watch it and knew what was coming on at what time and what day. She didn't need a TV guide. The western shows were her favorites. Joyce was a loveable person who needed a lot of tender loving care.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Edgar, and one sister, Luella. Survivors include one brother, Howard Krohnke of Kiron; one sister-in-law, Burenett Krohnke of Schleswig; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Peters of Arcadia; a niece, Priscilla Krohnke (Gopal) and husband, Jim of Baroda, Michigan; a nephew, Douglas Krohnke and wife, Carol, and their children, Dylan and Sean of Schleswig; two step-nieces, Carolyn Lambert and family of South Carolina; and Lois Boyens and family of Denison; many other relatives and friends she made through the years.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, February 5, 1999 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing, "On Eagle's Wings" and "Beyond the Sunset". Linda LaVonne (Hulsebus) Cooper (1952 - 2002)

Linda LaVonne Cooper was born October 20, 1952 to Donald and LaVonne Hageman Hulsebus in Denison, Iowa. She died August 31, 2002 in Moville, Iowa at the age of 49.

Linda graduated from the Denison High School in 1970. She was born in Denison, Iowa, married Thomas Cooper on August 8, 1980 at St. Rose of Lima Church in Denison. The couple moved to Boone in 1981 until 1985, when they moved to Plainfield until 1988, when they moved to Moville.

Linda worked for J.C. Penney's and later McKeown Engineering while in Denison. She was a teachers aide at Woodbury Central Elementary up until her health did not allow it anymore. She was a member of Moville Women's Club. Linda loved spending time with her coffee club friends, doing crafts, interior decorating, reading the Bible and many other books, collecting antiques, building scrap books, working crosswords and bird watching. Linda was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Moville, the church choir and a CCD teacher.

She is survived by her husband Thomas Cooper of Moville, Iowa; two sons Jerod Cooper of Moville, Iowa and Gabriel Cooper of Moville, Iowa; two daughters Carissa Cooper of Moville, Iowa and Millie Cooper of Moville, Iowa; one brother Dean and his wife Susan Hulsebus of Granger, Iowa; and two sisters Carol and Ed Fink of Denison, Iowa and Lori and Jeff Petersen of Denison, Iowa. Other survivors include two brother-in-laws Norman and his wife Patricia Cooper of San Antonio, Texas and James and his wife Sharon Cooper of Mondamin, Iowa; one sister-in-law Beverly and her husband Thomas Buckman of Glenview, Illinois and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents and one son, Reggie Cooper.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville, Iowa with interment at the Arlington Township Cemetery in Moville, Iowa. Magr. Roger J. Augustine officiated the service and graveside rites. Those serving as pallbearers were Roger Christiansen, Chuck Hoelker, Charlie Kostelnick, Kurt Nash, Rich Pagel and Steve Riser. Visitation was held on September 2, 2002 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. The Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel of Movile, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Ann Hedstrom (1964 - 1999)

Ruth Ann "Tootie" Hedstrom was born at Denison, Iowa, January 10, 1964, the daughter of Bueal and Deloris Davis Hedstrom. She was raised at Denison being graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1982. Following high school she furthered her education at the Nebraska School Of Business in Omaha. She made her home in Omaha, Council Bluffs and, for the past seven years, she had resided at Missouri Valley, Iowa, commuting to Woodbine to her work in the family concrete business.

In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews, boating, snow skiing, Motocross, driving Paul's corvette, riding Al's Harley, participating in Powder Puff Demolition Derbies and was especially fond of her cats. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kiron.

Ruth Ann died Saturday afternoon, October 2, 1999 at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 35 years, 8 months and 22 days.

Tootie was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alva and Maggie A. Davis and paternal grandparents, Jubel and Florence Hedstrom.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa with Pastor Wayne Fritzinger and Pastor Keith Rice officiating. Music for the service was provided by soloist, Chad Larson singing "Jesus Is Walking With Me" and "The Lord's Prayer" with Mrs. John W. Larson serving as organist. Honorary bearers were Thea, Noah, Skylar, Austin, Tanner and Lucas Hedstrom. Bearers included Shane Lindberg, Rory Lindberg, Dustin Hedstrom, David Davis, Eric Davis and Brett Moller. Michael L. Schwieso (1946 - 2001)

Michael L. "Mick", son of Albert A. and Madonna McMahon Schwiesco [sic], was born August 4, 1946, in Kittery, Maine. Mick's family lived in Chicago, Illinois where he attended kindergarten. The following year his family moved to Manilla, Iowa here [sic] he graduated with the Manilla High School Class of 1964. After his schooling Mick worked at a number of places, including: Farmland, Manilla Fertilizer, Hy-Line, Omaha Cold Storage and Rocky's.

On April 30, 1977, Mick was united in marriage with Carleen Nieland at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Mick and Carleen made their home in Manilla. Mick was employed at Miller Seed, Horizon Seed and Sucrosco Seed. Due to failing health, Mick retired in 2000.

Mick was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He loved his dogs and cat and enjoyed participating with chat lines on the computer, hunting, fishing, gardening, music, photography, bowling, golfing and keeping the cars clean and waxed.

On Monday, July 23, 2001, Mick died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa shortly after suffering a heart attack in his home. He was 54 years, 11 months and 19 days of age.

Mick was preceded in death by his parents.Mick is survived by his wife Carleen Schwieso of Manilla; brothers and sisters, Dennis Schwieso and his wife Linda of Waterloo; Chris Macumber and her husband Glen of Manilla; Pamela Jurgensen and her husband Gerald of Manilla; Jeff Schwieso of Manilla; an uncle Gerald "Jiggs" McMahon of Manilla; three aunts: Patricia McMahon of Manilla; Dorothy Rooney of Sioux City; Mary Schwieso of Council Bluffs; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A prayer service was held on Thursday, July 26, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. Rosary was held at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla with Rev. Robert Gralapp officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, July 27, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa with Rev. Robert Gralapp serving as Celebrant. Mass servers were Kurt Rasmussen and Tim Jurgensen. Gift bearers were Dannis [sic] Schwieso, Chris Macumber, Pamela Jurgensen, and Jeff Schwieso. Patricia McMahon served as Eucharistic Miniser [sic] and Linda Schwieso served as Lector. The Sacred Heart Adult Choir sang "Here I Am, Lord", "Prayer Of Saint Francis", "Oh Lord, I Am Not Worthy", "Be Not Afraid", and "On Eagle's Wings" Interment was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa.

Leo McCullough, Jr. 65 of Carroll died suddenly Thursday, June 20, 1996 at his son's home south of Auburn, Iowa following a long illness.

Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 1996 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The celebrant was Father Richard Remmes, cocelebrant was Father Chris Van Oasbree. Giftbearers were his 7 grandchildren Jamie and Jesse McCullough, Allison and Kenny McCullough, Luke, Lindsey and Spencer Feld. The Lector for the Mass was Marlene Christiansen. Eucharistic Minister was Judy Feld. Interment was at 1:30 p.m. at King Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Casketbearers were Verdell Brus, Rick Rasmussen, Roger Broderson, Ray Hulsing, Marvin Huelsing, and Dean Thomsen.

Visitation began after 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. A rosary was recited at 3 p.m. Sunday. A Christian Wake service was held by the parish at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

McCullough was born on January 3, 1931, at Denison, Iowa, the son of Leo Sr. and Clara (Brandt) McCullough. He was baptized at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. He attended a rural school northwest of Vail and graduated from St. Ann High School at Vail.

Leo was united in marriage to Alice Schaben on February 7, 1955 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. The couple farmed north of Manilla, Iowa from 1957 until 1977 then moved to the family farm northwest of Vail. They moved to Carroll in 1989. Leo enjoyed raising Charolais cattle and spending lots of time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife Alice of Carroll, his children Darrell McCullough of Carroll, Debbie Feld and her husband, Mark of Carroll, Larry McCullough of Auburn, Randy McCullough of Salix, Iowa; and seven grandchildren, one sister Patricia Turnbull and her husband Bill of Hutchinson, Minnesota; brothers Charles of Vail, and Keith of Denison. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Peggy McCullough. McCullough was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.

Donovan Howorth (1931 - 1999)

Donovan (Don) Howorth was born at Denison, Iowa, January 23, 1931, the son of James and Ruby Wilken Howorth. He was raised at Denison where he was graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1949. Following high school he was employed as a land surveyor with Lechner Engineering Company of Ames, Iowa. From 1951 until his discharge in October of 1955 he served his country in the United States Air Force.

On April 18, 1954, Donovan was united in marriage with Evelyn Howell at the United Methodist Church in Hamburg, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children Jeff and Mary. They made their home on the military base at South Carolina until his discharge when they moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Donovan was employed by Kiewit Construction where he was in charge of a highway paving crew for over 20 years. In 1974 the family moved to Ashland, Nebraska and, in 1975, Donovan went to work for Jensen Construction retiring in 1980. They spent their retirement years on the lake at Ashland where he enjoyed fishing, watching the wildlife and riding the three wheeler with the grandchildren.

Donovan died Sunday April 4, 1999 at Midlands Hospital in Papillion, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 68 years, 2 months, and 11 days.

Donovan was preceded in death by his parents. Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife Evelyn Howorth of Ashland, Nebraska, son, Jeff Howorth and wife Deb of Omaha, Nebraska, daughter, Mary and husband Jim Onstott of Houston, Texas, five grandchildren, sister, Diane McAninch of Denison, Iowa, aunt, Sara Howorth of Sioux City, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 7, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with the Rev. Chrisa Ferguson officiating. Special music for the service included "Beyond The Sunset" and "On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove" with the congregation singing "In The Garden". Glenn Rankin served as organist. Casket bearers included Virgil Walde, Dick Grill, Louis Butler, Virgil Michalaski, Dennis Derr and Jack Foster. Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Luetta Mae (Wilken) Wabschall (1933 - 1998)

Luetta Mae (Wilken) Wabschall, age 64, died January 17, 1998, in Littleton, Colorado. She was born on May 27, 1933 in Schleswig, Iowa to Carl J. Wilken and Anna Marie (Meyer) Wilken. Luetta graduated from Denison High School in 1951 and afterwards was briefly employed by the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

Though she moved from Iowa over 40 years ago, she maintained her ties to Iowa and continued to be an avid patron of the Schleswig Public Libraray all her life. While living in North Canton, Ohio, she served as the Director of Volunteer Services at Timken Mercy Medical Center. She was active in various civic and charitable organizations. She moved to Colorado in 1990 as a partner in Oleo Acres Farrier Supply, Inc. She remained active in running the family farrier business up until her death.

Luetta was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Florence (Wilken) Kyle. She is survived by her husband, Jack; son Mark and daughter-in-law Joan and grandson Michael of Los Gatos, California; stepson Darrell and daughter-in-law Sandra of Downer's Grove, Illinois; step-daughter Christi and son-in-law Robert Michel and grandchildren Robert Jr. and Margie of Redmond, Washington; stepson Dale and daughter-in-law Suzanne and granddaughter Jennifer of Littleton, Colorado; step-daughter Jackie Wabschall and grandchildren Benjamin, Christina and Nicholas of Bellingham, Washington; brother Vernie Wilken and nephew Mark and nieces Dawn and Diane Boettger of Denison and nephews [sic] Neil of Schleswig; sister Irene Bloom and nephew Larry of Omaha, Nebraska; nephews Don Kyle of Houston, Texas and Eugene Kyle of Sioux City, Iowa and niece Georgene Hoberg of Santa Clara, California.

Memorial services were held at 10 A.M., Saturday, January 24, 1998 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Irene Florence (Schmidt) Kruthoff (1930 - 1997)

Irene Florence Schmidt Kruthoff was born May 1, 1930, the daughter of Carl William and Ernestine Sleckmann Schmidt. She died Monday, April 7, 1997 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-six.

Irene was born in St. Louis, Missouri, where she was baptized in Christ on May 14, 1930 and later confirmed April 18, 1943 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She received her elementary education at the Grant Township School and Zion Lutheran School in Denison. Irene graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1948 and continued her education at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital, receiving a Registerd Nurse degree in 1951.

On December 26, 1954, Irene was united in marriage to Dale Kruthoff at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with the birth of five children. In 1957, the couple moved to a farm near Arion. Irene continued her education at the University of Colorado, receiving her nurse practitionership in 1976. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Dale of Arion; three daughters, Karen, Cynthia and Kristine all of Omaha, two sons, Carl of Arion; Mark and his wife, Paula of Blair, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Sarah and Ashlee Kruthoff, two step-grandchildren, Josh Biffar and Heidi Green; one sister, Barbara Petersen and her husband, Earl of Lake Park, Minnesota, her mother-in-law, Marie Kruthoff of Denison; one brother-in-law, David Kruthoff and his wife, Georgia of Bay City, Texas; three nephews and five nieces.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, April 11, 1997 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniement for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want". The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Hueber Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Peder Rasmussen (1927 - 1997)

Robert, son of Peder and Karen Steinicke Rasmussen, was born November 26, 1927, in Manilla, Crawford County, Iowa. He attended school in Manilla, graduating from Manilla High School in 1945. On January 11, 1946, he entered the United States Army, serving stateside as a general carpenter in the latter part of World War II. After being honorably discharged on December 18, 1946, he returned to Manilla and worked with his father, brothers, nephews, and son in construction.

On August 21, 1948, Robert was united in marriage to Vivian Marie Dawson in Bagley. Three children were born to this union. They lived their whole married life in Manilla where Robert worked with Rasmussen Lumber Company. He retired in the spring of 1993 shortly after suffering a stroke.

On October 5, 1997, Robert died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center, in Manning, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. He reached the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 9 days.

Robert was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, and was a member and trustee of the Presbyterian Church. He served for several years on the M & M Country Club Board and loved to golf, bowl, play cards, and spend time with his grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a daughter, Constance Rasmussen, and two sisters; Anna Justice and Mable Prosin.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Marie Rasmussen of Manilla; two children, Mike Rasmussen and his wife, Julie, of Manilla; Robin and her husband, Dan Koskamp, of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren; Kami and Nick Rasmussen, Jordan, Bethany and Hannah Koskamp; four sisters; Elna and her husband, Lucien Bender, of Las Vegas, Nevada; Betty and her husband, Bob Harvey, of Hurst, Texas; Doris and her husband, Kenneth Loeffelman, of St. Louis, Missouri; Carmen and her husband, John Heck, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; three brothers; Leo Rasmussen and his wife, Grace; Otto Rasmussen and his wife, Hazel; and Jack Rasmussen and his wife, Ellen, all of Manilla; one brother-in-law, Harold Justice, of Carroll; and by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Dale S. Lacey (1937 - 1994)

Dale S. Lacey was born, the son of Duane and Clara (Scott) Lacey, on January 7, 1937 near Danbury, Iowa. He died as the result of injuries received in a farm accident, on Tuesday, July 19, 1994 at the age of 57 years.

Dale, a longtime area farmer and cattle feeder, graduated from Mapleton High School in 1955. He was united in marriage to Sandra Boldenow on December 3, 1961 in Elk Point, S.D. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of two sons and one daughter.

Dale was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, where he was currently president of the Church Council. He was also director for Crawford County Cattlemen, a former member of the Schleswig School Board where he served as president and a past board member of the Mapleton COOP.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandra; two sons, Shane Lacey of Omaha and Kirk and his wife, Lynnette Lacey of Danbury; a daughtter and her husband, Tammy and Kevin Neubauer of Ida Grove; his mother, Clara Lacey of Mapleton, three grandchildren, Natasha, Seth and Shelby Neubauer; a sister and her husband, Oliver and Francis Stehlik of Ankeny and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 23, 1994 at 11;00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. James Schatz officiating. Burial was at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek, Iowa. Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Wendy Baumann. Vocal selections were presented by Mr. Kerry Scott who sang "Home On The Range" and "The Lord's Prayer". Honorary pallbearers were: Bill Hagerdon, Fred Dirksen, Gary Zediker, Roger Koch, Gary Vanvleit, Keith Zidiker, Bob Grabher and Bob Banks. Pallbearers were: Chad 'Bullfrog' Petersen, Steve Flammang, Scott Hansen, Matt Lacey, Carey 'Pete' Seuntjens, Steve Zediker, John Trieber and Cal Kastner. Lunch was served by the Women's Guild in United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall following the interment. The services were under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Homes of Ida Grove, Ia.

William Lee Ettleman (1947 - 2004)

William Lee Ettleman was born May 17, 1947, the son of Keto Wayne and Adeline Louise Christensen Ettleman. He died Friday, April 30, 2004 at the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of fifty-six.

Bill was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on July 4, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Dow City. He received his education in the Dow City-Arion Community School, graduating with the class of 1965. During his high school years, Bill was probably best known for the athletic prowess of "The Ettleman Twins." He continued his education at Midwestern College in Denison, playing footall during the 1965-66 season, and ending as the only undefeated college football team in the nation. On July 6, 1966, Bill entered the United States Army. He received his honorable discharge on June 17, 1968 and returned to Crawford County, where he spent his career in the meat packaging industry until his retirement.

On July 20, 1968, Bill was united in marriage to Patricia Steinkuehler. The couple were blessed with the birth of four children.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He had a witty sense of humor and loved to entertain. He found humor in every situation, even right to the end.

Preceding Bill in death were his father, Keto; infant granddaughter, Reagen Lynn Schechinger and his mother-in-law, Kathernine [sic] Steinkuehler. Survivors include two daughters, Tracey Schechinger and her husband, Bruce of Manilla; Tiffany Ettleman and special friend, Jason Schneider of Schleswig; two sons, Todd Ettleman and his wife, Cathy of Denison; Tyler Ettleman of Dow City; their mother, Patricia Ettleman of Dow City; three grandchildren, Kelsey and Nathan Ettleman and Bailey Schechinger; his mother, Adeline Ettleman of Dow City; two brothers, a twin, Robert Ettleman and his wife, Judy of Council Bluffs; Charles Ettleman and his wife, Diane of Denison; one sister, Susan Ettleman of Dow City; his father-in-law, Orville Steinkuehler; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Dow City. Pastor Judy Deweber officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Dow City Cemetery. Jeanette Kuhlman provided the organ accompaniment for soloist EveVonne Muff singing "Surely The Presence of the Lord" and Be Not Afraid". Pallbearers were: Charles Stegeman, Jim Steinkuehler, Doug Steinkuehler, Brian Ettleman, Joe Steinkuehler, Ace Ettleman, Jim Ettleman, Tim Ettleman, Chris Wood, Duff Wood and Ted Williams. Military Honors were the Dow City American Legion Post 444. The family invited everyone in atendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Community Building, served by the Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
