Louise Freda (Moeller) Hinrichsen (1913 - 1981)

Louise Freda Hinrichsen was born July 17, 1913 near Schleswig, the daughter of John and Freda Jensen Moeller. She died on Tuesday afternoon at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 67 after a long illness.

Louise was raised on a family farm. She was active in 4-H, showing the grand champion calf at the Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, Nebr. in 1931. She graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1932.

Louise made her home with her parents until she was united in marriage to Leslie Hinrichsen on Feb. 14, 1952 at Schleswig. They made their home on a farm near Charter Oak until their retirement in 1977 when they moved to Schleswig. Louise was baptized in the Christian faith in 1928. After her marriage she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. After moving to Schleswig, she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Hugo C. Moeller and George A. Moeller.

Survivors include, her husband, Leslie Hinrichsen of Schleswig, one brother, John H. Moeller of Schleswig and one sister, Jessie, Mrs. Walter Jaacks of Denison, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Willis Jaacks, Jon Jaacks, Thomas Flagge, James Schultz, Larry Baak and LaWayne Hinrichsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Loretta Weiss (Schinkel) Borgstahl (1918 - 1997)

Loretta Weiss Borgstahl was born June 27, 1918, the daughter of Herman and Julia Christiansen Schinkel. She died in her home, in Charter Oak, Iowa, Tuesday, October 14, 1997 at the age of seventy-nine.

Loretta was born near Creighton, Nebraska, where she lived until the age of nine when she moved, with her parents, to a farm near Arion, Iowa. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1932 at Zion Lutheran Church. Her early education began in a rural school near her home, and Zion Lutheran School in Denison. She continued her education at the Denison Community High School, graduating with the class of 1936. While still in high school, Loretta received her normal training. After graduation, she taught in rural schools near Charter Oak.

Loretta was united in marriage to George Harold Weiss on February 23, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled on a farm south of Charter Oak, and were blessed with a family of three children. They remained on the farm for forty years, retiring to Ute, Iowa, in 1981.

On February 2, 1983, Harold died and Loretta moved to Charter Oak on November 30, 1985 when she was united in marriage to William Borgstahl. William died September 15, 1996. Loretta was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, a member of their Ladies Aid Organization, and a charter member of the Willow Modern Home Makers. She enjoyed baking, quilting, and occupying her leisure time socializing with her family and friends. She was active in community social events.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Harold Weiss, and William Borgstahl; one granddaughter, Diane Kohler and one brother, Marvin Schinkel.

Survivors include, two daughters, Connie Kohler and husband, Ken of Remsen; Teresa Mordhorst and husband, Donald of Soldier, and one son, Dr. Dennis Weiss and wife, Patti Jo of Omaha; eleven grandchildren, David, Doug and Dean Kohler and Debra Ruden, Dusty, Zachary and Ann Weiss and Molly Boyes, and Michael, Matthew and Jill Mordhorst; ten great-grandchildren, one sister, Janet Landgraf of Omaha; and two step-children, Ronald Borgstahl and Janice Geist; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A. M., Tuesday, October 21, 1997 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt and Vicar Kent Pierce officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery, Charter Oak. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Lift High the Cross", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "Abide With Me, Fast Falls the Eventide". Those serving as pallbearers were Matthew Mordhorst, Michael Mordhorst, Douglas Kohler, Zachary Weiss, Michael Ruden, Ronald Weiss, Dustin Weiss, Dean Kohler and Byron Weiss. A Prayer Service was held at 8:00 P.M., Monday, October 20, 1997 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Marie A (Petersen) Marten (1919 - 1989)

Marie A. Marten, the daughter of August L. and Mahala Johannsen Petersen, was born on Nov. 27, 1919, at rural Denison, Ia., and died on Jan. 9, 1989, at her home at Fairway Heights, Denison, after a long illness, attaining the age of 69 years.

Marie grew up on the family farm at rural Denison and attended rural schools. Marie was baptized on Feb. 4, 1920, and later confirmed on March 25, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

On Jan. 26, 1941, she and Ralph Marten of Denison were united in marriage at Zion Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with seven children. Ralph and Marie made their home in Denison where she worked with Ralph, operating the retail Western Auto Store for 28 years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church; a member of the Ladies Aid, having served as President; Past District President of the Lutheran Womens Missionary League; and served as Red Cross Chairman of the Crawford County Bloodmobile for over 20 years. She spent many years on the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Board. Her first love was her church, family and home and she was an avid golfer.

Preceding Marie in death was her mother, Mahala Petersen. Survivors include her husband Ralph of Denison; five daughters: Sharon and her husband, William Benz of Newburgh, N.Y., Diane Marten of Santa Rosa, Calif., Carol and her husband, Richard Webb of Denison, Mary and her husband, Jerry Thompson of Petaluma, Calif., and Joan and her husband, Larry Birk of Des Moines; two sons: Dennis Marten and his wife, Linda Lea of Denison and David Marten and his wife, Renae of Heidelberg, Germany.

Also surviving are her father, August L. Petersen of Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison; 14 grandchildren; four brothers: John Petersen and his wife, Loueen of Denison, Edmund Petersen and his wife, Marion of Denison, Leonard Petersen and his wife, Arlis of Ute and Earl Petersen and his wife, Barbara of Lake Park, Minn.; four sisters: Margaret and her husband, Marvine Petersen of Denison, Anna and her husband, Wilbur Harm of Denison, Bernice and her husband, Carl Segebart of Vail and Betty and her husband, Don Bilsten of Denison. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Mathilda Marten of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated with interment in the Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist and congregational singing. Serving as pallbearers were Milton Berkley, Don Gustafson, E.P. Bengfort, Bud Webb, E.G. Kregness and Herb O'Meara. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Raymond C. Friedrichsen (1914 - 1982)

Raymond C. Friedrichsen was born on May 3, 1914, in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Carl J. and Ella Brockman Friedrichsen. He died on Friday morning, July 9, 1982, at the Dickinson County Hospital, Spirit Lake, Iowa, at the age of 68.

Raymond was raised on a family farm in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. After the completion of his education he farmed with his father. Raymond served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 until 1947. After his release from the military he returned to Crawford County.

On May 12, 1948, Raymond was united in marriage to Donna Kropf in Schleswig. Together they farmed the Friedrichsen home place for 16 years. In 1964 they moved to Denison where Raymond was employed. Due to his health, Raymond retired in 1974. Since that time, he has continued to make Denison his home, spending his summer at Lake Okoboji. Raymond was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, his wife Donna of Denison, one son Larry and his wife Lorri of Snyder, Nebraska, one daughter Joanne and her husband Lynn Shurter of Graettinger, Iowa and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 12, 1982, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig with full military rites. The Rev. James Cobb officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Milroy Hottendorf, Daniel Kienast, Orlo Nissen, Clayton Meyer, Tony Reisz and Ed Jurgensen.

Verdell M. Salmon (1919 - 1994)

Verdell M. Salmon was born January 28, 1919 in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Ralph H. and Jennie E. (Skarin) Salmon. He graduated from Arthur High School in 1937 and was united in marriage to Margery M. Burnquist on February 28, 1939.

Their union was blessed with three sons, Dwayne, Carroll and Rodney and four daughters: Mardell, Karen, Mary and Crystal. A resident of rural Schleswig, Iowa, he was a lifelong dairy and crop farmer in Ida and Crawford Counties until he retired in 1986. Verdell died on Tuesday, August 2, 1994 at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City.

He is survived by his wife, Margery; 3 sons and their wives, Dwayne and Karen Salmon of Ida Grove, Carroll and Beverly Salmon of Moline, Il., and Rodney and Leita Salmon of Festus, Mo.; 3 daughters, Karen Bumann of Ida Grove, Mary and her husband, Frederick Gates of Omaha and Crystal and her husband, Jim Pulscher of Woodbine; 21 Grandchildren, 16 Great-grandchildren, a son-in-law, Richard Rodine of Moline and a brother and his wife, LeRoy and Dorothy Salmon of Kiron.

Pallbearers were Verdell's grandsons: Duane Salmon Jr., Nathan Pulscher, Marshall Bumann, Fred Gates Jr., R.J. Bumann, Daron Salmon, Rick Rodine, John Salmon, Eric Salmon and Jason Gates. A meal was provided for those attending the service in the church fellowship hall, before leaving for the interment in the Kiron Cemetery. The funeral was under the direction of the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Homes of Ida Grove, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Mardell Rodine and one son-in-law, Ray Bumann Jr.

The funeral, officiated by Rev. Robert Lundberg, was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday at the Arthur Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa. Music was provided by the congregation singing "In The Garden" and by Brent and Deb Lindgren.

Walter Schmieder (1914 - 1998)

Walter Schmieder was born on June 12, 1914, the son of Bernhard and Amelia Werle Schmieder. He died at his home in Mapleton, Iowa on Saturday, August 22, 1998, at the age of eighty-four.

Walter was born a farm near Ida Grove, Iowa and was baptized in Grant Township. His early education began in a rural school near his home and then at St. John's Lutheran School, Charter Oak. He was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak in 1927.

On March 9, 1941, Walter was united in marriage to Evelyn Creese at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa. The couple started farming in 1945, south of Charter Oak. In 1985 they retired and moved into town. Walter was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, International Lutheran Laymen's League, Crawford County Farm Bureau, and the Charter Oak Community Club. He loved the outdoors, card playing, baseball and dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Curtis, a brother, Fred Faupel, a sister, Marie Newland, two brothers-in-law, Barney Newland and Laverne Wiegel and one sister-in-law, Marie Schmieder.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Mapleton; three daughters, Jenelle Pearson and her husband, Carl of Spring Valley, Minnesota; Lavelle Meadows and her husband Larry of Fort Dodge; Denise O'Neill and her husband, Brian of Denison; one son, Caris and his wife, Barb of Tampa, Florida; eight grandchildren, Todd Pearson and his wife, Margaret; Nathan Pearson; Derrick and Travis Meadows; Meghan, Molly, Mackenzie and Riley O'Neill and one greatgranddaughter, Kayla Pearson; two brothers, Harry of Onawa; Benny and his wife, Ruth of Ute; two sisters, Amelia Wiegel of Charter Oak; Hedwig Schnoor and her husband, Martin of Ricketts; one sister-in-law, Esther Faupel of Stewartville, Minnesota; also a very special couple, Gene and Jan Horan of Omaha; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, August 26, 1998 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Marjorie Neddermeyer provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Guitarist and soloist, Ardith Nelson sang "He Touched Me" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary Pallbearers were: Derrick Meadows, Travis Meadows, Nathan Pearson, Todd Pearson, Alan Disburg, Byron Weiss, Riley O'Neill and Tom Staley. Pallbearers were: Laddy Gierstorf, Doug Schnoor, Eldon Faupel, Kevin Creese, Don Eggert and Phil Creese. A Prayer Service was held at 7:30 P.M., Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Anna (Wendt) Andresen (1915 - 2007)

Louise Anna (Wendt) Andresen was born July 25, 1915 the daughter of Henry and Marie (Jetter) Wendt. She peacefully passed away at the Eventide Lutheran Home Thursday, July 26, 2007 at the age of 92. Louise was born in Hanover Township, Iowa and received her education near her home. She was baptized in Christ September 19th, 1915, and was later confirmed on April 2nd, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

On June 19th, 1940 was united in marriage to William John Andresen at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple lived on a farm for a few years, later making their home in Denison, where they were blessed with the birth of 2 sons.

Through the years, Louise worked at the Denison Hotel, and Watje's Cafe. Once her first son was born, she remained at home to raise her children. In addition to taking care of her family, she spent much of her time gardening both flowers and vegetables, reading magazines, and sewing. She made many of her own clothes and also would alter clothing she would purchase to make it her own. She enjoyed taking long walks, and would even walk from Eventide Lutheran Home to Walmart to shop. In her spare time, she enjoyed helping serve meals at the Crawford County Senior Center. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and their Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill in 1982; her son, Darrell; and her sister, Caroline Andresen and her husband, Walter. She is survived by her son, Dale and his wife, Annmarie of Port Charlotte, Florida; one daughter-in-law, Judy Andresen of Burleson, Texas; 2 grandsons, Scott and John Andresen, both of Burleson, Texas; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "I The Lord of Sea and Sky," and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Those serving as pallbearers were Andrea Huebner Boyer, Milfred Nemitz, Keith Duncan, Charles Dreibelbis, Walter Huebner and Dennis Huebner. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Marlin Leslie Johnston Sr. (1917 - 1985)

Marlin Leslie Johnston Sr., was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, March 3, 1917, the son of Leslie and Selma Hansen Johnston. He was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, June 18, 1921. Marlin was raised on the family farm and received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. Prior to entering the service, he farmed with his father. Marlin served in the United States Army for three and a half years during World War II.

While in the service, Marlin was married to Hazel Lee Goddard July 8, 1944, at Belmont, N. C. They made their home in North Carolina until Marlin was discharged from the service, when they moved to the family farm in Crawford County. They farmed until moving to Denison in 1957 where Merlin was employed at the White Star Dairy and later at the Denison Seed House. He then was employed as foreman of the groundskeepers for the Denison Park Board, in charge of all the city parks in Denison, retiring in 1979. He spent his retirement years in Denison.

Hazel preceded Marlin in death, Dec. 30, 1984. Marlin died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9 (1985), at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 67 years, 11 months and six days. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 8, Denison.

Marlin was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by three sons, Marlin Johnston Jr., Norman Johnston, and Dean Johnston all of Denison; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Marjorie, Mrs. Roy Dethmann of Denison, and Garnette Fineran of Owatonna, Mn. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison with the Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiating at the services. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "Abide With Me" and "I Am Trusting Thee Lord Jesus" with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Pallbearers included Joe Clinton, Earl Shives, Wayne Schroeder, George Luetjens, Wayne McMinemee, and Wallace Saunders. Interment, with graveside Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond Henry Lapel (1910 - 1998)

Raymond Henry Lapel was born June 15, 1910, the son of Edward and Dora Rohde Lapel. He died Monday, October 12, 1998 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-eight. Ray was born in Manilla, Iowa and at a young age, he moved with his parents to the Sioux City area. He received his education in rural schools in Woodbury and Crawford County.

On March 25, 1933, Ray was united in marriage to Hazel Amman in Blair, Nebraska. The couple settled in Denison, where Ray was a greens keeper at the Denison Country Club, where they also resided. Ray took a job with the Council Bluffs Bridge Construction Firm, working in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. One of the jobs included the overpass on the Donna Reed Road and other projects in Crawford County.

Ray had the opportunity to go to Alaska and work on the Alkan Highway for two seasons. In 1944, Ray was called into the Navy and served his country. After receiving his honorable discharge on March 19, 1945, Ray and Hazel purchased a farm north of Vail. While farming, he also continued in his construction career and returned back to Alaska fourteen times. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail and the Deloit American Legion. Ray loved construction work and farming and in his leisure time he enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wilbert Lapel and his wife, Jo and Albert Lapel and his wife, Mary. Survivors include his wife, Hazel of Denison; one son, Monte Lapel and his wife, Helen of Vail; five grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Ladonna Lapel of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 15, 1998 at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa. Rev. Susan K. Babovec officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Jean Ang provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "Jesus Loves Me" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Those serving as pallbearers were: Tracey, Chuck, Todd, Gene, J.R. and Dan. Military Honors were American Legion Post No. 8, Denison, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at church, served by the Presbyterian Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Victor Carl Gloede (1916 - 1995)

Victor Carl Gloede was born June 26, 1916, the son of Titus and Lillian Schmidt Gloede. He died at the Millie's Rest Home in Sutherland, Iowa on Saturday, October 7, 1995 at the age of seventy-nine years.

Victor was born on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa and was baptized on September 24, 1916 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. He lived with his parents on the family farm near Ricketts until entering a nursing home in the early 1940's.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wilbur and Alvin Gloede. Survivors include six sisters, Hildegard Bohlmann and her husband, Carl of Charter Oak; Elvera Carlyle and her husband, Jack of Rapid City, South Dakota; Evelyn Gloede of Denison; Frances Gloede of Los Angeles, California; Darlene Saunders of Charter Oak; Una Bell Frehse and her husband Harold of Denison; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Baak and her husband, Edward of Charter Oak; also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 1995 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. Eugene Ernst officiating the service and grave side rites held in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Soldier Township. Shirley Stull served as organ accompaniment for the congregational singing of "Just as I Am, Without One Plea". Those serving as pallbearers were: DuWayne Bohlmann, Virtus Bohlmann, Allen Gloede, Craig Frehse, Ron Gloede and Jeff Frehse. The Immanuel Ladies Aid provided a luncheon for the family and those in attendance at the service. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.

Meinert H. Jensen (1912 - 1978)

Meinert H. Jensen was born on February 19, 1912, in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Paul and Emily Christiansen Jensen. He died on Saturday morning, December 2, 1978, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 67. Meinert was raised on a family farm and attended rural schools near his home.

On January 14, 1943, he was united in marriage to Irene Boyens at Tampa, Florida. They made their home in Florida during the first four years of their marriage, where Meinert was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his release from the military, they made their home in Ricketts where Meinert was in the livestock trucking business. He also drove bus for the Schleswig School system for a number of years. Meinert was a long time member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church where he served in various areas including Elder for a number of years. He was also a member of the Schleswig American Legion.

In addition to his parents, Meinert was preceded in death by one brother Herbert. Survivors include his wife Irene of Ricketts, two daughters, Zeone, Mrs. Stephen DeMarrais of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Michele, Mrs. Allen Gloede of Omaha. Also by five grandchildren, one brother Carl of Omaha and one sister, Helen, Mrs. Raymond Wiegle of Charter Oak.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 5, 1978, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Cemetery. The Rev. R. Winterowd officiated at the services. Honorary pallbearers were William Ladwig, Edward Ladwig, Raymond Hansen, LaVerne Christiansen, Norman Christiansen and Howard Ahrenholtz. Pallbearers and military graveside rites were provided by the Schleswig V.F.W. and American Legion.

Ronald D. Schmidt (1913 - 1983)

Ronald D. Schmidt was born Nov. 15, 1913 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Albert and Hulda Peters Schmidt. He died March 13, 1983 at the Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. at the age of 69. Ronald spent his early years on a family farm in Crawford County. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

On June 10, 1936, Ronald was united in marriage to Fern Christiansen at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Denison with Ronald's family. Later they moved to at farm near Schleswig where they remained for several years. In 1949 due to Ronald's poor health they moved to Loveland, Colo. After Fern's death in 1958, Ronald continued to make his home in Colorado.

Ronald was united in marriage to Pat Brewington of Boulder, Colo. in 1969. They made their home in Colorado until 1972 when Ronald retired and moved to Mesa, Ariz. Pat died in 1979. Since that time, Ronald has continued to make Mesa his home.

In addition to his wife, Ronald was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, two sons, Larry of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Jeffery of Loveland, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Sue Brewington of California and Linda (Mrs. Jim) Castrone of Longmont, Colo.; two step grandchildren, Roni Castrone and Ellen Castrone. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Vernetta Paulsen and Lavern (Mrs. Fred) Zage both of Denison.

Funeral services were held March 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack D. Heck officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Robert Arnold as soloist. Hymns for the services included, "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Ronald Paulsen, Reynold Gehlsen, Earl Schmidt, Henry Schroeder, Alvin Schwenn and Vernie Schmidt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Virgil Francis Dozark (1911 - 2000)

Virgil Francis Dozark, son of Frank and Kathryn Hemsky Dozark, was born in Jackson Township, Crawford County, Iowa, October 1, 1911. He attended the rural school and Vail Public High School from which he was graduated with the Class of 1929.

On September 27, 1933, Virgil was united in marriage with Adele Dorothy Brandenburg at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison with the Rev. W. Frehse officiating. Their union was blessed with three sons, Roger, Wayne and David. He and Adele began farming in Jackson Township, Crawford County and later moved to their farm southwest of Denison where they farmed until their retirement.

In January of 1936, Virgil was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he took an active role in church affairs as a voting member, president of the Voters Assembly, secretary and was a parochial school board member. He was also interested in civic affairs serving for nine years as an FHA township trustee. During his life, he also served at various times as a country school director, assistant soil conservation commissioner and as a township assessor.

Adele died July 7, 1991 and Virgil remained on the farm five miles southwest of Denison until moving to Denison in 1993. Since August 21, 1996, he had resided at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there his death occurred Wednesday afternoon, October 25, 2000. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 89 years and 24 days.

Including his parents and wife Virgil was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Darlene Dozark.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include his three sons and their wives, Roger A. and Delores Dozark of Denison, Iowa, Wayne A. and Fran Dozark of Ansbach, Germany and David L. and Susan Dozark of Iowa City, Iowa, 9 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 10 step great-grandchildren, two sisters, Gladys Peters of Lake View, Iowa and Irene Bunting of Storm Lake, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service included four congregational hymns, "Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus", "Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me", "Abide With Me" and "Amazing Grace". Karen Kahl served as organist. Honorary bearers included Sheila Dozark, Lori Dozark, Kate Dozark, Becky Jacobsen, Kim Hiatt, Cindy Dozark, Bamby Dozark, Michelle Huls, Val Reimers and Sheryl Larson. Casket bearers were Douglas Dozark, Kent Dozark, Brian Dozark, Craig Dozark, John Hiatt, Jon Jacobsen, Roer Reimers and Conwell Larson. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Wilbert H. Langholdt (1918 - 1979)

Long-Time Ricketts Businessman Dies

Wilbert H. Langholdt was born on October 4, 1918, near Ricketts, Iowa, the son of Albert and Carrie Schwarz Langholdt. He died on July 31, 1979, at Montclair Nursing Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 60. Whip was raised on a family farm in Soldier Township. He received his formal education in the Immanuel Lutheran School. He was baptized on November 3, 1918, and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on April 9, 1933, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Om October 10, 1940, Whip was united in marriage to Laura Schwarz at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Whip entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon his release from the military he returned to the Ricketts area. He worked for the county of Crawford for a period of time before operating a trucking business for six years.

Whip has been in the food and beverage business for the past 27 years. For the past number of years he has included bowling in his business, known as Whip's Lanes. Whip was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. in Schleswig and Charter Oak. He also served with the Ricketts Fire Department for many years.

He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include, his wife Laura of Ricketts, two daughters, Marjorie, Mrs. Allan Neddermeyer of Charter Oak and Linda, Mrs. Gary Price of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and five grandchildren. Also by his mother, Mrs. Carrie Langholdt of Charter Oak and two brothers; Gehart of Charter Oak and Albin of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 3, 1979, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. E.E. Greene officiated at the services. Full military rites and pallbearers were provided by the Schleswig and Charter Oak American Legion and V.F.W. Honorary pallbearers included John Lantz, Kenneth Winsor, Gordon Moeller, Wayne Kuhlmann, Albert Bullmann and Don Ladwig.

Meinhardt William Block (1919 - 1987)

Meinhardt William Block was born in Crawford County, Ia. on May 17, 1919. He was the son of Fritz and Emma Loewe Block of Buck Grove, Ia. He was received into the Kingdom of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in infancy. In 1933 he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Buck Grove. He attended Zion Lutheran School in Denison, Ia.

He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army from Jan. 4, 1942 until Nov. 18, 1943. He served overseas. Upon returning home, he was engaged in farming with his father and brother.

On Feb. 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marion Deiber. Meinhardt and Marion Block farmed on the family farm until his health failed him on April 10, 1971. They moved to Denison, Ia. in April 1972 where he resided until his death.

On Sunday, March 8, 1987, the Lord, in His infinite love and wisdom, called him to his eternal rest. He was in the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb. at the time of his death. He attained the age of 67 years, 9 months and 21 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Henry, at the age of one year; one brother, Paul Block, of Buck Grove; and his father-in-law, Walter Deiber.

Those who survive him are his wife, Mrs. Marion Block of Denison; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Arlene Block; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Leona Deiber; nieces, nephews, the members of St. John's Lutheran Church of Buck Grove, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, March 11, 1987, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of Denison, with the Reverend Paul Stengel Jr., pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church of Buck Grove, officiating. The congregation sang "Just As I Am" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". The sermon text was Psalm 23. Serving as pallbearers were Terry Deiber, Stanley Deiber, Tim Deiber, Eric Deiber, Jeff Meeves and Dale Plagmann. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.

Rosa Auguste Eliese (Mohr) Bendixen (1910 - 2004)

Rosa Auguste Eliese Bendixen was born October 10, 1910, the daughter of Peter and Hannah Miller Mohr. She died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at the Eventide Nursing Horne in Denison at the age of ninety-four. Rosa was born on a farm near Larchwood, Iowa in Lyon County and received her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized in Christ March 31, 1911 and confirmed, April 5, 1925.

As a child, she moved with her parents to a farm they purchased in Ida County and made her home with them until her marriage to Erwin Bendixen, April 24, 1929 at the Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm in the area near Schleswig and subsequently began a trucking business. Additionally, Rosa worked at Bill's Market and cooked at the Schleswig High School. She enjoyed caring for her home and gardening. She was a member of several card clubs in the area and enjoyed her leisure time with her husband as they camped and fished.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erwin; one brother, Harvey Mohr; one step-brother, Henry Weick; three sisters-in-law, Luverne Mohr, Gladys Bendixen and Edna Weick.

Survivors include: one sister, Lillie Hirth and her husband, Howard of Longmont, Colorado; one brother-in-law, Raymond Bendixen of Odebolt; three nieces, Marlyn Else and her husband, James of Schleswig; Cathy Hirth of Longmont, Colorado; Arliss Todd and her husband, Glen of Holstein; two nephews, Charles Hirth of California, and Jerry Bendixen of Odebolt; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a. m., Friday, December 3, 2004 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side service held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Recorded service music of "The Lord's Prayer" by Charlotee Church and "Silent Night" A Celtic Christmas was played. Honorary pallbearers were: Vickie Huebner, Aaron Huebner, Charles Hirth and Cathy Hirth. Pallbearers were: Allisa Tiefenthaler, Andrea Huebner Boyer, Jerry Bendixen, Burdell Jensen, Leslie Grell and James Else. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at Cheeta's in Schleswig. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Wilbert M. Bergstadt (1917 - 1996)

Wilbert M. Bergstadt, age 78, of Omaha, Nebraska, died March 22, 1996 in Omaha. He was born November 25, 1917, in Denison, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Marie of Omaha, daughters and sons-in-law: Sandra (Ken) Cooper of Omaha, Julie (Alan) Wood of Eagle, NE. Grandchildren Michelle Cooper of Omaha, Jon Wood of Kearney, Eric Wood of Eagle, a brother Alvin Bergstadt and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Bergstadt is retired from the U.S.A.F and a former owner of Swan-Bergstadt Furniture Store. He was a certified life underwriter for Mutual of New York for 39 years and a Board member of Lutheran Medical Center. Mr. Bergstadt was also past President of the Omaha Businessmen Breakfast Club.

Memorial Services were held Wednesday, March 27, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Master, 2617 South 114th Street in Omaha, NE. Officiating the service was Reverend Robert Schaff. A private family burial will be held at a later date in Denison, Iowa. Crosby-Burket-Swanson-Golden Funeral Chapels of Omaha are in charge of arrangements.

Melroy Carstens (1911 - 1995)

Melroy, son of Peter and Mary Peper Carstens, was born October 16, 1911, on a farm near Manilla in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural school at Iowa Township #4 until entering high school. Melroy was graduated with the Manilla High School class of 1928.

On December 25, 1937, Melroy was united in marriage with Lucille Miller. Three daughters, Judy, Joyce, and Elaine, were born to this union. Melroy lived and farmed on the farm, near Manilla where he was born. The farm was recognized as an Iowa Century Farm in 1979. He had retired from active farming, but continued to help with crops and cattle. Melroy died unexpectedly while working on his farm on Thursday afternoon, November 9, 1995, at age 84 years and 23 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by a brother in infancy; by two sisters, Florence and Malinda Carstens.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille, of Manilla, his daughters: Judy and her husband, Marlin Frank, of Greeley, Colorado; Joyce and her husband, Ted Miller, of San Juan Capistrano, California; Elaine and her husband, Galen Struve, of Blue Springs, Missouri; six grandchildren: Jill and her husband, Rob Whritenour, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kristine and her husband, Reid Bessenger, of Chesapeake, Virginia; Michelle and her husband, Dale Skipper, of Mission Viejo, California; Matthew Frank of Westminster, Colorado; Dana Struve of Lamoni, Iowa; Jennifer Frank of Boulder, Colorado; a great-grandson, Nathaniel Bessenger; two brothers, Albert Carstens and his wife, Verna, and Junior Carstens and his wife, Pat, all of Manilla; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Melroy was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he has served as Elder and trustee. He was active in the Cattlemen's Association, Farm Bureau, 4-H, and the Manilla Community Club. He loved all sports, especially fishing. Above all he was devoted to his wife, daughters and their husbands, and grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, November 13, 1995 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla, Iowa. Officiating the service was Reverend Kenneth Ritchie. Serving as soloist was Larry Genzen with organist Trudy Saunders for selections "Ivory Palaces", "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art". Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Casket bearers were Jerry Carstens, Dick Miller, Ron Frahm, Allen Vennink, Jay Carstens and Jay Miller. Rosalie M. (Green) Blume (1919 - 1997)

Rosalie M. Blume, of Schleswig, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa, having attained the age of 77 years, 8 months, and 22 days. Born November 1, 1919, in Oto, Iowa, Rosalie was the daughter of Barney and Ethel (Benton) Green. She grew up and received her education in Oto High School in 1937. She was baptized as an infant in the Catholic faith.

On November 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Edgar W. Blume in Denison. This year would have marked their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Rosalie and Edgar farmed in Crawford County for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin Blume of Battle Creek, and Dennis Blume and wife Juliana of Cushing; eight grandsons, Carl Blume and wife Sharon, Keith Blume and wife Barb, Kevin Blume and wife Charity, Harold Blume and wife Karen, Kelly Blume and wife Amy, Todd Blume, Jared Blume and wife Amy Ann, and Dustin Blume; 20 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Dale Green of Cushing, Melvin Green and wife, Alma of Anthon, Glen Green and wife Mabel of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Guiles Green and wife Betty of Sergeant Bluff; two sisters, Catherine Chedester and husband Vernon of Sioux City, and Doloris Heath and husband Richard of Anthon; and two sisters-in-law, Erna Green of Lawton, and Margaret Green of Anthon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar on July 16, 1997; three brothers, William, Marvin and Harold Green; one infant sister, Patricia; and one grandson, Dennis Blume Jr.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 28, 1997 at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove, Iowa. Officiating was Reverend Karen Handke with organist Connie Huffman and Trisha Hoffman, soloist, singing, "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden." Pallbearers were Keith Blume, Kelly Blume, Jared Blume, Dustin Blume, Carl Blume, Todd Blume, Kevin Blume and Harold Blume. Interment was at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Iowa.

Wilbur Herman Schroeder (1912 - 2000)

Wilbur Herman Schroeder, son of Johannes and Clara Kruse Schroeder, was born March 9, 1912, at the family home, Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools and then Manning High School. After he completed his schooling, he worked on the family farm and for the Denison area Rural Electric Association.

On January 21, 1941, Wilbur was united in marriage with Gertrude Frank at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Two children were born to this union. The family made their home on a farm south of Arcadia and later bought a farm northeast of Arcadia. He retired from farming in 1976 when they moved into their new home in Westside. During his retirement years, Wilbur had a large garden and supplied most of the town with fresh produce. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling. He was a member of the United Church in Westside.

When Wilbur's health began to fail he entered the nursing home, first in Denison and then the Manilla Manor. He died on Thursday, February 10, 2000, at the Manilla Manor, Manilla, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and one day.

He is preceded in death by his wife Gertrude in 1996; his parents; two brothers, Vernon Schroeder and Merlin Schroeder; a sister Bernice Justice; and grandson Justin Heitmann.

Wilbur is survived by a daughter, Clarice and husband Darwin Rosener of Spirit Lake, Iowa; son, Robert Schroeder and wife Rachelle of Tabor, Iowa; four grandchildren: Mark Rosener and wife Michelle; Scot Rosener and wife Sabra; Eric Schroeder; and Nathan Heitmann; four great-grandchildren: Maxwell; Mia; Jacob; and Sydney Rosener; two sisters, Gertrude Christensen of Stanton, California and Phyllis and husband Wayne Jans of Westside who showed special loving care to Wilbur over the years; nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Friday, February 11, 2000 with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa. Services were held Saturday, February 12, 2000, at 10:30 at United Church of Westside in Westside, Iowa. Pastor Virginia Stiles officiated the service. Musical selections were "Ivory Palaces" and "Just As I Am" with Janine Kock as organist. Casket bearers were Mark Rosener, Scot Rosener, Eric Schroeder, Nathan Heitmann, Arlan Jans and Lowell Schroeder. Burial was in the Westside Cemetery, Westside, Iowa. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Albert Joseph Schneller (1947 - 1997)

Albert Joseph Schneller was born January 26, 1947, the son of William and Rose Mae Schneider Schneller. He died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Thursday, August 21, 1997 at the age of fifty.

Albert was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on February 10, 1947 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 26, 1961. He received his education at the Zion Lutheran School.
After completing his education he farmed and was employed by IBP for twenty years. He continued to farm after leaving IBP and was also employed by Cal-Car in Westside.

Albert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as usher. He was a very loving and caring son, brother and uncle who loved to spend time with his family, especially his nephew, John. He loved farming and was always willing to help when needed. In his leisure time, Albert enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing and socializing over a cup of coffee at Denison Seed.

He was preceded in death by his father, William and one brother, Harold. Survivors include his mother, Rose Mae; three brothers, Paul and his wife, Marylou; Robert and his wife, Lona; and Marvin all of Denison; three sisters, Marcella of LeMars; Mary of Denison; Margaret of Seward, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, Calista, John, Jackie, Jordan, Ariel and Darrian; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 25, 1997, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites at the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Beautiful Savior". Those serving as pallbearers were: Terry Boettger, Scott Claussen, Douglas Kuhl, Harry Riessen, Roger Lueck and Jim Harms. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Allyn B. Maack (1954 - 1993)

Allyn B. Maack was born Dec. 28, 1954, the son of Herman and Margaret Green Maack. He died on Friday, Sept. 10, 1993, at the age of 38 years.

Allyn was born in Denison, Iowa, and was baptized at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on March 30, 1969. He began his high school education in the Charter Oak - Ute Community School and graduated from the Schleswig Community School with the class of 1973.

After completing his high school education, he entered the U.S. Army and served his country in Germany. In 1974, Allyn was discharged from the service and furthered his education at Western Iowa Tech Community College where he received his degree in carpentry. He was subsequently employed by the Wayne Schultz Construction Co. for two years before becoming employed as a truck driver for Mike Greder. In 1989, he began his employment at Farmland Industries.

On Oct. 10,1981, Allyn was united in marriage to Lois Slechta. The couple settled in Denison and was blessed with the birth of a daughter. Allyn was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman. Survivors include his mother, Margaret of Charter Oak; his daughter, Billie Rae Maack of Charter Oak, and her mother, Lois Slechta of Denison; four brothers: Gailyn of Miami, Fla., Loren and his wife, Christine of Anchorage, Alaska, Larry and his wife, Leila, and Ronnie and his wife, Jo Ann, all of Charter Oak.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 20, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Reverend Kurt Kaiser and Reverend Philip E. Bloch officiated the service and grave side rites, held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Martha Bloch provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck, singing "Nearer, My God to Thee" and "Beautiful Savior", and for the congregational hymn, "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Honorary pallbearers were: Kim Brockman, Jeff Johannsen, Julie Red-dick, Dave Meseck and Beth Maack.
Pallbearers included: Dennis McFarland, Keith Petersen, Roger Schmidt, Doug Krohnke, Hoss Reddick and Joe Tyler. A lunch was served by Zion's Dorcas Society for those in attendance at the service. The Huebner Funeral Home of Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Amy Belle (Crane) Meyer (1936 - 1987)

Amy Belle Meyer was born on April 14, 1936, the daughter of Ira Crane and Martha Lane Crane at Carroll, Iowa. She died on April 15, 1987 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of 51 years and one day.

Amy grew to womanhood in Mildford Township, and Crawford County. She attended the local country school and graduated from the Denison High School in 1954. She was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church and later transferred to the United Church of Christ.

Amy was united in marriage to Donald G. Meyer of Vail on April 17, 1955 at the Presbyterian Church in Vail. The Rev. Frank Mease officiated. To this union three children were born, James, Larry and Suzanne.

Amy worked several years as office secretary for the United Church of Christ. She later worked as a nurse's aid at Horn Memorial Hosptial in Ida Grove. She studied nurses training at Western Iowa Tech Community College and graduated from the school of practical nursing at the Cherokee campus. She was since employed at the Horn Memorial Hospital as a practical nurse.

She sang in the church choir and was church pianist for six years. She was also a Sunday school teacher at various times, She was the director of the Bell Choir, served as a cub scout leader, 4-H leader and was past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Sylvan Chapter 207 of Denison, a Majority Rainbow Girl, holding the Grand Cross of Color Honor.

Don and Amy also raised four of Amy's cousins. Amy was preceded in death by her mother Martha and a brother James in infancy.

She is survived by her husband Donald of Schleswig, sons James and his wife Faye Meyer of Sioux Falls, S. D., Larry Meyer of Des Moines, and Suzanne Meyer of Sheffield. The cousins they raised as their own, Mary S. Lane of Denison, Theresa and her husband Kevin Laubscher of Dow City, Peggy Holman, Denison, Nancy and her husband Paul Craft of Omaha, Neb., five grandchildren, her father and stepmother Ira and Lucille Crane of Vail, two sisters, Eva Chamberlin of Plainview, Texas and Anna Marie and her husband Henry Olson of Irwin, eleven nieces and nephews and two great nephews.

Eastern Star Services were held on Friday night, April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with burial in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig, Rev. Darrell Bailey officiated. Colleen Goode served as organist. The church choir sang "Jesus Walked" and "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked". The Hand Bell Choir performed "Bells of St. Mary". Serving as pallbearers were Harold Reissen, Lea Nelson, Tom Selk, Dale Jensen and Blair Baughman. Funeral services were under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Anna (Petersen) Jochims (1861 - 1928)

For the fourth time in three weeks death entered a Schleswig home and removed an elderly mother and also one of long suffering from bodily ailment.

Mrs. Anna Jochims passed away quietly Sunday morning after a lingering illness of nine years, being almost totally helpless for several years. During this time Mrs. Jochims underwent three operations to gain relief but surgical skill seemed of little avail and her suffering continued until death relieved it. For the past several years she has had to have constant care and for about two years her niece, Mrs. Herman Peper, has been her nurse. Mr. Jochims preceded her in death July, 1925.

Mrs. Anna Jochims, nee Petersen, was born August 24, 1861 at Tryu?, Schleswig, Holstein, Germany, and departed this life, May 27, 1928, at the age of 66 years, 9 months and 3 days.

In the year 1878 she came to America and settled first in Scott county, Iowa. Here she was united in marriage to Wilhelm Jochims in 1884 and to this union eight children were born, five of whom are still living. In March, 1885, they came to Crawford county and engaged in farming until 1908, when they moved to Schleswig, where she has since made her home.

She is survived by her five children, namely: Johannes, Letcher, S. Dak.; Wilhelm E. and Theodore of Lake Park; Bertha, Mrs. Herman Schroeder, Round Lake, Minn.; Alvina, Mrs. A. C. Campbell, Perry; one sister, Mrs. Henry Claussen of Ricketts; one brother, Jurgen Petersen, of Hartley; two half-brothers, Nick Petersen of New Liberty, and Theodore Petersen of ??? Minn. and 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon in charge of Rev. Kielhorn. Interment in Morgan township cemetery.

Anna Wilhelmina (Ullrich) Jochims (1889 - 1958)

Mrs. John Jochims was born Anna W. Ullrich, daughter of Claus and Mary Ullrich, June 3, 1889, at Denison Ia.

Mrs. Jochims was married March 24, 1909 and lived on a farm with her husband at Denison for one year. The couple moved to a farm at Letcher (S. Dak.) in March of 1910 and lived in the Letcher vicinity for 36 years. They retired to Mitchell in 1946.

Mrs. Jochims died in a Mitchell hospital on July 5 (1958) after a shor illness at the age of 69. She was admitted to the hospital on July 4.

Preceding her in death was her husband and one son, Allen.Survivors include two sons, Harvey and Wayne, both of Letcher: a daughter, Mrs. Albert Rickel of Mitchell: three sisters, Mrs. Hana A. Brodersen and Mrs. Harold Bergstadt both of Denison, and Mrs. Jack Fisher of San Francisco, Calif., and six grandchildren. Mrs. Jochims was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Denison.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. July 8 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Mitchell with Pastor John E. Lutze officiating. Music at the service was by Mrs. John Lutze, vocalist, accompanied by Mrs. A. J. Schimming. Pallbearers were Clarence Knutson, Ray Van Walleghen, Chris Rudloff, Harry Greene, all of Mitchell, Ernest Hewer and Joe Heinzmann of Letcher. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.

Betty Jean Bessie (Creese) Gress (1932 - 1997)

Betty Jean Bessie Gress was born February 8, 1932, the daughter of W.A. and Esther Schwartz Creese. She died Wednesday, October 29, 1997 at the Marion Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of sixty-five.

Betty was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her education in rural schools near her home and the St. Paul's Lutheran School, Hanover Township, Charter Oak.

Later in life, Betty was united in marriage to Leslie Borchardt and to this union one daughter, Debra was born.

On February 22, 1959, Betty was united in marriage to Ira Gress at the church of Gethsemane in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple settled on a farm south of Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of one daughter, Judy. The couple later moved to a farm east of Charter Oak where they resided for thirteen years. In 1979, they moved to a farm northwest of Charter Oak, where they continued to farm. Ira passed away in 1986 and Betty moved to Denison to make her home.

Betty was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, where she helped to organize the young people's group and helped put together lessons for the blind in Sunday School. She was active in her community as a member of the Pork Producer's Ricketts, the C.B. Club and secretary of the Boyer Diabetes Foundation. Betty was also a past member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies Choir and Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who loved being with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, her husband, Ira; one step-brother and one step-sister. Survivors include two daughters, Debra Landgraf and her husband, Darvin of Deloit; Judy Gress and special friend, Russell Beermann of Denison; three grandchildren, Calin Landgraf of Tallahassee, Florida; Jacob Landgraf of Deloit; Kayla Gress of Denison; one brother, Delbert Creese and his wife, Betty of Glendora, California; two aunts, Gladys Kelm of Charter Oak; Laura Langholdt of Ricketts; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 1, 1997 at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ricketts, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Marlene Lee provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and congregational hymn "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were: LeVerne Creese, Harold Lorenzen, Freddie Jepsen, Randy Creese, David Gress and Ken A. Langel. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. Betty Jean (Stegemann) Malone (1936 - 1999)

Betty Jean Malone was born January 26, 1936, the daughter of Marcus and Edna Bielenberg Stegemann. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, on Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at the age of sixty-three.

Betty was born in Otter Creek Township, near Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on March 22, 1936 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig and later confirmed there on January 27, 1952. Betty received her education in a rural school near her home.

On April 12, 1957, Betty was united in marriage to Samuel A. Malone in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in the Dow City area and were blessed with the birth of four children. Betty was a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and transferred her membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig in 1998. She was also a member of the Denison Community Center.

She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who was very fond of her grandchildren. She loved birds and had several pet birds. Betty enjoyed gardening, crafts and all sorts of needle work, including knitting, crocheting, embroidering and quilting. Betty was very grateful to Dorothy Crum and Henry Klockgether for being with her during her illness.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one infant daughter. Survivors include three sons, Ernest Malone and his girl friend, Barbara Jenkins of Arion; Lawrence Malone and his wife, Paula of Defiance; Marco Malone of Manning; one daughter, Alice Davis and her husband, Robert of Castana; a special friend, Henry Klockgether of Charter Oak; nine grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; two brothers, Lee Stegemann and his wife Mildred of Denison; Roy Stegemann of Murray, Nebraska; two sisters, LaMorn Whitenack and her husband, Albert of Schleswig; Mary Ann Fertig and her husband, Bernard of Wall Lake; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 13, 1999, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Dow City Cemetery in Dow City, Iowa. Betty (Meyer) Pieper (1955 - 1998)

Betty Pieper was born May 21, 1955, the daughter of Herbert and Leona Gierstorf Meyer. She died Friday, August 21, 1998 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of forty-three.

Betty was born in Denison, Iowa, and was baptized in Christ on June 5, 1955 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak by Rev. Cloeter. She was later confirmed on March 30, 1969 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak by Rev. Prouty.

As a child, she lived with her parents on a farm near Ricketts, Iowa and received her education at the Ricketts Community School, St. John Lutheran School, Charter Oak and graduated from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1973. After completing her education, Betty moved to Omaha, where she was employed by Mutual of Omaha for three years. She returned to Denison, Iowa in 1976 and began her work at IBP until the present time and recently worked at the Crawford County Clerk's office.

On September 22, 1990, Betty was united in marriage to Larry Pieper at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison by Rev. Philip Bloch. The couple made their home in Denisoh and were blessed with the birth of two children. Betty was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and IBP Hall of Fame. She was a very considerate and loving person, who enjoyed cooking, baking and loved flowers. In her leisure time, Betty enjoyed bowling, golfing and softball.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Charlie Pieper. Survivors include her husband, Larry of Denison; one son, Cory Pieper one daughter, Shelby Pieper, both at home in Denison; her parents, Herbert and Leona Meyer of Eventide; four brothers, Bruce Meyer and his wife, Carol of Charter Oak; Michael Meyer and his wife, Lois of Mapleton; Bryce Meyer of Charter Oak; Marc Meyer and his wife, Holly of Denison; one sister, Myrna Meyer of Denison; mother-in-law, Esther Pieper of Vail; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joyce and Kim Von Glan of Westside; Dick Pieper and fiance, Janice Phipps of Vail; Jerry and Diane Pieper of Westside; Kevin Pieper of San Antonio, Texas; Cheryl and Jeff Vetter of Arcadia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Beverly R. (Bielenberg) Christiansen (1931 - 2006)

Beverly R. Christiansen was born May 4, 1931, the daughter of '"Raymond and Helga Linke Bielenberg. She died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-five. Beverly was born in Schleswig, Iowa and received her education in the Schleswig Community School, graduating from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1949. She was baptized May 31, 1931 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa and later confirmed there on March 25, 1945.

On May 21, 1950, Beverly was united in marriage to Bonard Christiansen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. They made their home in Fort Sheridan, Illinois and Camp McCoy, Wisconsin while Bonard was in the service. After being discharged, they moved to a farm northeast of Schleswig for one year. Then moving to a farm east of Schleswig, where they farmed for twenty years before moving to Beverly's century home farm east of Schleswig. In 1965, Beverly started working at the Schleswig Leader, where she worked for twenty-five years.

She was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, where she sang in the church choir. She was also a member of Immanuel Couples Club and a card club. Beverly was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed sewing, baking and cooking. In her leisure time she enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing and socializing in a game of cards.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Donna Hoyt and one brother, William in infancy.

Survivors include her husband, Bonard of Schleswig; one son, Steve Christiansen of Schleswig; one daughter, Terri Christiansen and her husband, Dr. John Jerrard of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two step-grandchildren, Sara Jerrard of Denver, Colorado and Sydney Jerrard of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one brother, Russell Bielenberg and his wife, Karyl of Tempe, Arizona; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Brenda Sue Clausen (1969 - 2001)

Brenda Sue Clausen, age thirty-two of Wichita, Kansas died Monday, August 13, 2001 at her home in Wichita. Brenda was recovering from surgeries related to a July 2 kidney pancreas transplant.

Brenda was born to Ronald and Marjorie Bandow Clausen of Schleswig, Iowa on March 30, 1969. She was baptized in May of 1969 and later confirmed on April 3, 1983 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Brenda graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1987 and continued her education at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Business Management degree in 1991.

Brenda served as catering manager at the Dakota Dunes Country Club in South Dakota from 1991 to 1992. From 1993 to 1995, she was employed by Marriott Dining Service at the Siebens Forum and Conference Center in Storm Lake. Brenda was determined to become a lawyer and was accepted into the University of Iowa Law School in 1996.

While attending law school she was involved in many law related activities, which included a Research Assistant to Professor James Tomkoviez, Associate Case Editor for Moot Court Board, and Circulation Assistant for the University of Iowa Law Library. She performed one summer as Law Clerk to the Federal Defender of Des Moines and became a teaching Assistant to Professor Nancy Hauserman, University of Iowa Business Law Professor.

In December of 1998 Brenda received her Masters Business Administration from Iowa and in May of 1999 her Juris Law. During the summer of 1998, Brenda applied for and was accepted to work as a law clerk for the firm of Foulston & Siefkin. After graduating from the University of Iowa, she moved to Wichita to become an associate in Foulston and Siefkin L.L.P. Labor and Employment Division. She was a dedicated attorney and loved her associates and work. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends, playing piano, playing golf and her cats Sneetch and Bela.

Brenda was preceded in death by her mother, Marjorie, and three grandfathers, Walter Bandow, Leonard Fritz of Denison and Herbert Clausen of Schleswig.

Survivors include her father, Ronald Clausen; her brother, Tim; Grandmother Sylvia Clausen, all of Schleswig and Grandmother Dorothy Fritz of Denison. An extended family: Shae Hansen of Schleswig; Samantha, Glen, and Mikayla Brach of Littleton, Colorado; Scott, Abby, Caleb and Madison Hansen of Sioux City; Cindy Molgaard of Storm Lake. Also surviving are her uncles: Delmer Clausen of Ricketts; Verdell Clausen and his wife, Kathryn of Ricketts; Charles Bandow and his wife, Sharon of Denison; many cousins and friends. Brenda was a proud Godmother to Mikayla Shae Brach and Josie Marie Schultz.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2001 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Douglas Searles officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist, Wendy Bumann provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Elizabeth Searles singing "Morning Has Broken" and "On Eagle's Wings". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were the Labor and Employment Department of Foulston & Siefken L.L.P. and Richard Ewy. Pallbearers were Dr. Angie Nielsen, Terry Langholdt, Leon Schoenfeld, Wil Anderson, Craig Cassens and Janelle Koch. Carl A. Backhaus, Jr. (1933 - 2002)

Funeral services for Carl A. Backhaus, Jr. age 68 of Aurelia, Iowa were 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the First Congregational Church in Aurelia with Lay Pastor Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia. The Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia was in charge of the arrangements. Carl died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at his home in Aurelia.

Carl Alfred Backhaus Jr., was born October 31, 1933, the son of Carl and Clara (Schumann) at Schleswig, Iowa. He grew up in the Schleswig area and attended the country schools. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Carl served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1968. Carl moved to Aurelia in 1960, and worked at the Farmer's Co-op for 33 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and camping. He was a devoted husband and father. Special joys in his life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding Carl in death were his parents, siblings: Otto Backhaus, Lucille Kruse, Gertrude Ernst, Fern Stier, and infant brother, and two stepsons, James and Robert Hoops.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Janet Backhaus of Aurelia; three daughters, Sheree and her husband, Brad Booth of Aurelia, Janene and her husband, Mark Braunschweig of Cherokee, and Carla and her husband, Bruce Peterson of Alta; one son, Bruce and his wife, Kathy Backhaus of Newman Grove, Nebraska; one stepdaughter, Linda and her husband, Marc Schwanz of Holstein, and one step-son, Bill and his wife, Debra Hoops of Overland Park, Kansas. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Allan and Adam Booth, Dana and T.J. Braunschweig, Leigh Peterson, Katina Caspar, Destiny Peterson, Brooke Anderson, Keith and Elisabeth Backhaus, Amber, Megan, Josh and Bethany Schwanz, and Jessica and Samantha Hoop; three great-grandchildren, Halee Booth, Peyton Braunschweig , and Mazy Caspar, and nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Carol J. (Bush) Paulsen (1931 - 1998)

Carol J. Paulsen was born July 17,1931, the daughter of Ralph and Grace Rogge Bush. She died Tuesday, December 8,1998 at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa at the age of sixty-seven. Carol was born near Battle Creek, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home and the Mapleton Community School, graduating with the class of 1949.

On April 23, 1950, Carol was united in marriage to Eldo Paulsen at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm in Morgan Township, near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of three children. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

Carol was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an exceptionally good housekeeper and loved cooking and baking. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and her house plants and in her leisure time, Carol enjoyed bowling where for many years was secretary of the Ricketts Tuesday Night Mixed Bowling League. She also loved attending area tractor pulls where her husband, son and grandson participated.

She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband, Eldo of Schleswig; two daughters, Karla Cose and her husband, Gordon of Denison; Lynette Tiefenthaler and her husband, Steve of Holstein; one son, Bruce Paulsen and his wife, Cindi of Schleswig; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, her mother, Grace Bush of Onawa; three sisters, Donna Ree Davis and her husband, Duane of Castana; Bethel Lamb and her husband, Ronnie of Council Bluffs; Marcia Sangimino and her husband, Dominick of Bellevue, Nebraska; her mother-in-law, Caroline Paulsen of Schleswig; one sister-in-law, Ardene Ballantine of Fort Meyers, Florida; many other relatives and friends.

Charles August Christiansen was born January 25, 1933, the son of Henry and Amahlia Knutson Christiansen. He died at his home near Dow City, Iowa on Saturday, May 8, 1999 at the age of sixty-six.

Charles was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ February 24, 1933 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 30, 1947. He received his education at the Denison Community Schools, graduating from the Denison High School with the class of 1951. After completing his education, Charles worked for the railroad until entering the United States Army in 1953 and serving his country with the USAR ARMOR. After receiving his honorable discharge on January 19, 1955, Charles returned to the Denison area.

On November 18, 1956, Charles was united in marriage to Florence Hammer at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of three children. Charles began his employment with IBP in Denison, March 21, 1961. He was one of the first employed at the plant, retiring after thirty-three years in February of 1995. After his retirement he helped out at the Super Car Wash in Denison.

Charles was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and both the Iowa and National Greyhound Associations. He was a wonderful father with a unique sense of humor. He enjoyed gardening and in his leisure time, Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting and visiting with his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Florence in 1991. Survivors include his three children, Connie Christiansen of Denison, Karen Baber and her husband, John of Waverly, Iowa; and Kenneth Christiansen of Denison; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Bryan of Mocksville, North Carolina; Adeline Ettleman of Dow City; Lucille Brown of Ankeny; two brothers, Robert Christiansen and his wife, Ardith of Schleswig; Raymond Christiansen of Ankeny; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights , Memory Gardens in Denison. ; Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Eldon , Hardenkopf singing "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness". Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Charles Glotfelty, Donald J. Groth, Larry Winans, Kenneth Lueck, Cliff Tamm and David Duncan. Pallbearers were: Howard Christiansen, Chuck Ettleman, Loren Langholz, Bob Ettleman, Bill Ettleman and John Brown. Military honors were American Legion Post No. 8, Denison, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Henry Weise (1930 - 1971)

Clarence Weise was killed in a two-car accident near Hostein early Sunday evening and six persons were injured. The accident occurred at a county road intersection, a half mile west and four miles south of Holstein.

Clarence H. Weise, 40, the driver of one of the vehicles, was killed when his car collided with a pickup truck driven by Richard H. Brosanle, 41 of Holstein.

Hospitalized at Horn Memorial Hospital at Ida Grove, Iowa, were passengers in the two vehicles, Mr. Weise's wife, Lois, 39, and their two children, Gail, 12, and Marcia, 19, and Mr. Brosanle, his wife, Marian, 38, and their daughter, Cindy, 10.

Gail Weise was in fair condition Monday night at the hospital and all the others were in good condition. Gail suffered a skull fracture; Marcia suffered a fractured pelvis and fractured left foot; Mrs. Weise numerous lacerations and head injuries; Mr. Brosanle a bruised knee; and Ms wife and daughter cuts, and bruises. Ida County Sheriff Don Gebers, who investigated, said Weise, southbound, failed to see a yield sign after going over a small hill and his car collided with the pickup truck which was westbound. The accident occurred at 5:40 p.m.

Funeral services for Clarence Weise were held Wednesday at the United Church of Christ, with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating.

Clarence Henry Weise was born in Schleswig, August 16, 1930 to Clarence Weise and his wife Edna Volkmann. He passed away from injuries incurred in an automobile accident, Sunday, August 15, 1971, at 6:15 p.m.

On August 20, 1950 he married Lois Kroeger of Schleswig at the United Church of Christ. Two daughters were born to them Marcia ana Gail.

They farmed in the Schleswig area since their marriage. Mr. Weise was a confirmed member of the United Church of Christ and a former member of the Church Council, the Brotherhood and Merrymates. He was a loyal and faithful member of the church.

Besides his wife Lois and daughters, Marcia and Gail, he is survived by his mother, Edna Stegemann, a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Schneller (Ronald) of Comanche, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, stepfather and one sister.

Mrs. Jeanette Grell and Mrs. Evelyn Johnson sang "In The Garden" and "The Lord is my Shepherd". They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs. John Evers. Pallbearers were: Erwin Voss, Freddie Jacobs, Hans Jess, Charles Jessen, Ed Rusch, Harold Hill and Earl Schelldorf. Interment took place at Morgan Cemetery.

Clarence John Kortman (1945 - 1978)

Clarence John Kortman of Mapleton, the son of Clarence and Burnita Nielsen Kortman was born September 21, 1945 at Sioux City, Iowa. He died April 22, 1978 3 miles north of Ricketts, having reached the age of 32 years, 7 months and 1 day.

As a young boy he lived in Charter Oak. He graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1963. He then went to Morningside College in Sioux City graduating in 1968. He worked as a stock boy at Younkers while at Morningside and in his senior year he became a buyer for Younkers. After graduation he worked for the Crawford County Extension and the Hoffman Insurance Agency in Moorhead, then moving to Mapleton where he worked for the First State Bank for the last five years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Charter Oak, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Masonic Lodge 404 AF-AM, the Abu Bekr Shrine, the Mapleton Rotary, the Mapleton Jaycees, and the Mapleton Club.

He was a former member of the town council of Charter Oak, past president of the Mapleton Club, co-chairman of the Mapleton Centennial Committee and was a member of the Commericial and Community Club in Charter Oak and Ute.

Services were held on Tuesday, April 25, 1978 at the United Methodist Church at Charter Oak at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Howard Ball and Rev. Louis Aitken officiating. Burial was in the Charter Oak Cemetery at Charter Oak. Pallbearers were Tom Martin, Charles Lee, James Herdliska, John Holland, Larry Arnold, Tom Misfeldt, Alan O'Neal and Gary Thies. Honorary organizations were the Management and Employees of First State Bank, Mapleton Centennial Central Committee and Masonic Lodges of Mapleton, Charter Oak and Ute.

Survivors include his mother, Burnita of Charter Oak; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Magritha Nielson of Charter Oak; 2 sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Judy) Cloeter of Port Huron, Michigan, and Mrs. Loren (Julie) Strait of Crawford, Nebraska; 1 niece and 6 nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Clarence Schiernbeck (1938 - 1996)

Clarence Schiernbeck was born September 7, 1938, the son of Clarence and Elsie Schneller Schiernbeck. He died at the Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Illinois Thursday, August 1, 1996 at the 3 age of fifty-seven.

Clarence was born in Deloit, Iowa and subsequently moved with his parents to the Wall Lake area where he received his education in both a rural school near his home and the Wall Lake Community School.

After completing his education, he worked in construction in Wall Lake and then Farmland Foods in Denison. Additionally, he was involved in selling wholesale meats in the mid-west and had branch offices in various locations before owning and operating a semi-tractor and trailer. In 1989, Clarence returned to Denison where he purchased an acreage and began raising feeder pigs.

On May 18, 1991, Clarence was united in marriage to Alvina Lilleholm at the Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Vancouver, Washington. The couple settled in Denison where they were involved with trucking and their feeder pigs. For the past eighteen months, they worked for the Acme Transportation Company out of Elkhart, Indiana and transferred trailers to various locations around the United States and Canada.

In his leisure time, Clarence enjoyed fishing and traveling, but most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed the time he spent with his family and visiting with relatives around the country as they traveled. Clarence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: his wife, Alvina of Kiron; three stepdaughters, Earlene Rider of Arnold, Missouri, Zelda McDuff and her husband, John of Palmyra, New York; and Kim Bennett of Michigan; and one step-son, Randall Lilleholm and his wife, Mary of Denison; eight step-grandchildren; four sisters, Darlene Hast, Joyce Schiernbeck, Janice Soil and her husband, William and Diann Hoffmeier and her husband, Byron all of Denison; and two brothers, Richard and his wife, Carolyn of Vail and Vernon and his wife, Carol of Earlham, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 6, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Russell Westphalen, Walter Poggensee, Dennis Sonnichsen, Arnie Poggensee, Berdell Kruse and David Zeman. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at Zion Lutheran Church, served by their Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Clarice Mae (Lahndorf) Holmes (1932 - 2000)

Clarice Mae, daughter of Ferdinand Jacob and Ida M. Ehlers Lahndorf, was born October 3, 1932, in Manilla, Iowa. Clarice attended school in Manilla and graduated from Manilla High School in 1950.

On June 14, 1952, Clarice was united in marriage with Francis "Buck" Powers. Three sons were born to this union. Clarice and Francis made their home in Manilla where Clarice worked at several cafe's including Macks, Unity Cafe, Chris & Vi's, and the Dairy Mart. She became known as the "Whistle Lady" while serving as playground supervisor at the school for many years.

Shortly before Francis died on September 18, 1983, Clarice began working as a housekeeper at the Manilla Manor.

On May 17, 1991, Clarice was united in marriage with Dale Holmes at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Clarice and Dale made there home in Manilla and she remained working at the Manilla Manor until she was diagnosed with cancer in May of 1999.

Clarice was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. She enjoyed walking, gardening and flowers, stuffed teddy bears, baking and delivering meals to shut-ins and Christmas candy to downtown businesses.

On March 20, 2000, Clarice became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla where she died Monday, April 3, 2000, reaching the age of 67 years and 6 months.

Besides her parents and first husband, Clarice is preceded in death by a son Timothy Powers; a brother Edwin Lahndorf; a sister Lois Lahndorf in infancy; a brother-in-law James Powers; and two sisters-in-law Helen Hargens and Rita Hanneman.

She is survived by her husband Dale Holmes of Manilla; two sons Patrick Powers and his wife Jeannie of Norfolk, Virginia and Mike Powers of Manilla; five grandchildren: Shawn, Meg, Brian, Amy and Chris; two great grandchildren Miranda and Marshall; two step-daughters: Susan and her husband Gale Rosendahl of Sioux City and Tina Miller of Aspinwall; four step grandchildren: Joshua, Jacob, Joseph and James Miller; a brother Bill Lahndorf and his wife Jan of manning; her mother-in-law Ann Holmes of Manilla; a sister-in-law Ruby and her husband Emery Christofferson of Kimballton; three brothers-in-law: Dan Holmes of Boyer; Tom Holmes and his wife Sally of Union Grove, Wisconsin; Bill Powers and his wife Laura of Omaha, Nebraska; and by other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, 2000 at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa. Father Robert Gralapp concelebrated the service and grave side rites held at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Vocalists Laurie Powers and Marlene Jahn sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Prayer of St. Francis Of Assisi". The Sacred Heart Adult Choir sang "Be Not Afraid" and "On Eagles' Wings". Those serving as Mass servers were Kurt Rasmussen and Tim Bexten. Those serving as gift bearers were Joseph Miller and James Miller. Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Brian Powers, Shawn Powers, Sam Hansen, Jim Benning, Kevin Lahndorf and Corey Lahndorf. Pallbearers were Arnie Gallagher, Steve Vollstedt, Gayling Bral, Chris Powers, Joshua- Miller and Jacob Miller. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Clark Arlyn Martens (1946 - 2002)

Clark Arlyn Martens was born January 23, 1946 to Harry and Ethel (Kies) Martens. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in St. John's ' Lutheran Church in Buck Grove. He attended rural school in Washington Township #8 and graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1964.

On May 29, 1965 he was united in marriage with Connie Neumann at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Three sons were born to this union, Cary, Todd and Eric.

Clark was employed with IBP for 3 years after graduation, and then transferred to Farmland Foods where he was employed until March 1976. In 1969 he also began farming, first in the Buck Grove area, then moving to his wife's home place in Goodrich Twp. in 1973, where he was residing at the time of his death.

Clark started a career in trucking, hauling grain and livestock for local farmers, and in 1992 he went into a partnership with his son, Todd, trucking coast to coast. He also had a passion for farming, which he shared with his son, Eric. He had a pleasing personality with a good sense of humor. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. In his spare time he loved hunting, fishing, horse back riding, motorcycle riding, camping and cooking, and having coffee with his friends. He had a sincere dedication to his church, Zion Lutheran, where he was serving as an usher at the present time.

He died suddenly at his home from a massive heart attack on April 10, at the age of 56 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Harry & Ethel Martens, and his father-in-law Vernon Neumann.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Connie, and three sons: Cary and his wife Kellie of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Todd and his wife Candace of Deloit; and Eric and his wife Terri of Denison. He had eight grandchildren - Amanda, Alexis, and Allison Martens, and step-granddaughter Katie Crandall of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Also Tim, Jessica, Clayton and Christian Martens of Denison; one brother Craig Martens and his wife Mary Ann of Mission, Kansas; one sister Cathie and her husband Dr. Fred Sager of Waukee, Iowa, and his mother-in-law Helen Neumann of Denison, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Garden of Good Shepherd, in Denison. Organist Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hynm "Drawn to the Cross, Which Thou Hast Blest"; with soloist Eldon Hardekopf singing, "Mary's Little Lamb", and "On Eagles Wings". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Rober & Rose Mae Brodersen, Dennis & Georgia Meseck, Lowell & Doris Neumann, Kevin & Diane Fineran, Les & Vicky Brown, Dennis & Marlene Bergstadt, Dennis & Diane Sonnichsen, Dale & Phyllis Segebart, Arlo & Marlys Riessen, and Dan & Sheryl Grill. Those serving as pallbearers were: Donavon Sonnichsen, Mike Schaben, Ervin Lutz, Duane Hollander, Merle Holmes, and Gary Ruff. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Evening Guild and Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
