Edna (Beerman) Bandow (1919 - 1984 )

Edna A. Bandow was born on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa, April 7, 1919, the daughter of William and Johanna Weller Beerman. She spent most of her formative years in Crawford County where she received her formal education at the local rural schools near her home. Before her marriage, Edna was employed at different restuarants in Denison.

On Jan. 29, 1942, Edna was united in marriage with Edward Bandow at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. They made their home on a farm in East Boyer Township for nine years and in 1955 moved to a farm in Westside Township. While residing on the farm, Edna enjoyed membership in the Snap Club and the Friendly Homemakers Club. She was employed in the Laundry Department of the Crawford Count Memorial Hospital in Denison from 1968 until 1975. Edna and Edwar retired in 1978 and continued to live on the farm until 1980 when they move to Denison where she had since resided.

Edna died April 10, 1984, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 65 years and 3 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of the Ladies Aid of that Church.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, Amy Marie Johnson, and two sisters and one brother in infancy.

She is survived by her husband, Edward of Denison, two daughters, Joyce, Mrs. Randal Johnson of Vail, and Marilyn Scroggins of Sioux City, two sons, Howard Bandow of Springfield, Ohio, and Donald Bandow of Platte Center, Neb., six granchildren, and two sisters, Margaret, Mrs. Rudy Hollander of Denison, and Mildred, Mrs. Leon Neubauer of Ida Grove. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., April 13 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "Beautiful Savior" and "The Old Rugged Cross" and the congregation singing "My Faith Looks Up To Thee." Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist. Pallbearers included Duane Hollander, Gary Jahn, Gregory Jahn, Jeffrey Bandow, Kerry Bandow, and Kevin Neubauer. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Edna (Kuehl) Bockelmann (1912 - 1975 )

Edna Elfrieda Bockelmann, the daughter of Edward and Ella Reitz Kuehl, was born July 5, 1912 in Crawford County, Iowa, and died Sunday, August 10, 1975 in a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital. She had reached the age of 63 years, one month and five days.

Mrs. Bockelmann grew up on a farm in Crawford County and lived there until her marriage to Herman Bockelmann on December 18, 1935 at Mapleton. Following their marriage, she and her husband lived in Berne, Iowa, for one year and then in Ute for two years. They farmed for many years in the Soldier Township community until they retired and moved to the town of Mapleton in 1971. Mrs. Bockelmann was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ at Mapleton and was a member of the Women's Guild.

She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (JoAnn) Maack of Charter Oak, Iowa; one son, LoWayne of Palatine, Illinois; her mother, Mrs. Ella Kuehl of Mapleton and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 13, 1975 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, Iowa. Rev. Homer Perry officiated and burial was in Mt , Hope . Cemetery near Mapleton. Pallbearers were Louis Kuehl, Norman Kuehl, Darold Lee, Harvey LaFrentz, Howard Mason and Richard Dorale .

Edward H. Boyens (1896 - 1978 )

Edward Henry Boyens was born Jan. 28, 1896 in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Hans and Mary Johannsen Boyens. He died Nov. 10, 1978 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 82.

Edward received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He served in the United States Army during World War I for 15 months.

On Sept. 28, 1921 Edward was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jaacks. They started farming in 1922 in Goodrich Township where they lived for eight years. Then Edward farmed with his brother for over 35 years in Hanover Township retiring in 1965. Edward was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth and one brother, Herman.

Survivors include, one son Melvin of Lisbon, three grandchildren, one brother William of Denison and one sister Minnie, Mrs. Rudolph Schwitzer, also of Denison.

Funeral services were held Nov. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Richard Jaacks, Edmund Petersen, Vern Cooper, Robert Jaacks, LaVerne Christiansen and Eldor Schwitzer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison.

Edward H. Hecht (1891 - 1979 )

Edward Henry Hecht, was born Nov. 30, 1891 in Lincoln County, Minn. near Elkton, S.D., the son of George and Olga Mueller Hecht. He died Jan. 30, 1979, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 87.

Edward was raised on a family farm and received his formal education in the rural schools near his home, He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

On March 2, 1929 he was united in marriage to Anita Krohnke at Rock Rapids. They farmed in Lyon County, before moving to the Schleswig area in 1931. Edward farmed near Schleswig until 1958 when he retired and moved to Schleswig. Edward was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Schleswig American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. Survivors include, his wife Anita of Schleswig, two daughters, Florence, Mrs. Arnold Jepsen of Schleswig and Lois, Mrs. Charles Kruse of Denison. Also by six grandchildren, one great grandson, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. Pallbearers and Military Graveside rites were provided by the Schleswig American Legion. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Eleanora H. (Miller) Neubaum (1907 - 2003 )

Eleanora Henrietta Christine Neubaum was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Schleswig, Iowa, October 11, 1907, the daughter of Herman and Sophie Gierstorf Miller. She was raised on the farm and received her formal education at St. Paul's Hanover Lutheran School and Morgan Number Eight Rural School.

On February 24, 1931, Eleanora was united in marriage with Marvin Neubaum at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Their union was blessed with three daughters, Marian, Joyce and Phyllis. They made their home at Mapleton for three years before moving to their farm near Schleswig in 1934 where they farmed until retiring and moving to Denison. Eleanora was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and in her spare time she enjoyed baking, fancy work and tending her flowers.

Marvin died June 20, 1985 and Eleanora continued to reside in Denison where she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. In 1997 she moved to Martina Place, an assisted living facility, in Johnston, Iowa where she resided for two years. Since 1999, Eleanora had resided at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston and it was there her death occurred early Friday, January 17, 2003. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 95 years, 3 months and 6 days.

Including her parents and her husband, Eleanora was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Brent Stockfleth and three brothers, Carl, Herman and John Miller.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her three daughters and their husbands, Marian and Vernon Stockfleth of Schleswig, Iowa, Joyce and Adrian O'Meara of Las Vegas, Nevada and Phyllis and Glen Bielfeldt of Perry, Iowa; four grandchildren, Neil Stockfleth and wife, Beth of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Nola Salisbury and special friend, Warren Tennyson of Longmont, Colorado, Jon Bielfeldt and wife, Laura of Clarinda, Iowa, and Ann Bielfeldt of West Des Moines, Iowa and her fiance, Robert Presler Jr., of Des Moines, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Nathan, Kristin and Allison Stockfleth of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and Benton Bielfeldt of Clarinda, Iowa; two sisters, Irene Rothe of Onawa, Iowa and Mildred Clausen of Schleswig, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 20, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service included three congregational hymns, "Abide With Me", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Lift High The Cross". Karen Kalil served as organist. Casket bearers included Neil Stockfleth, Nathan Stockfleth, Jon Bielfeldt. Stanley Rothe, Douglas Neubaum and Joseph Griffin. Following the interment at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa, the family cordially invited everyone to return to the church and join them for lunch catered by Staley's of Charter Oak and served by the Zion Lutheran Dorcas Society. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, was privileged to be in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth (Jaacks) Boyens (1903 - 1974 )

Elizabeth Auguste Jaacks Boyens, daughter of Herman and Dora (Kohlhoff) Jaacks, was born. June 3, 1903, in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, where she also grew to womanhood.

She was married to Edward Boyens on Sept. 28, 1921, and they resided on the farm in Goodrich Township for eight years before moving to the present home in Hanover Township. She was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on June 9 and there she died on June 30. Her funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church on July 3.

She had been baptized in childhood and later was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion of Denison. She was a member of the Zion ladies aid for many years.
The service was conducted by Rev. Carl Schmidt. Burial was at the Crawford Heights; Memory Gardens.

Surviving are her husband, Edward Boyens; one son, Melvin of Lisbon, one brother, Meinhard Jaacks of Denison, two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Boyens of Denison and Marie Kranzskie of Omaha, Neb., and three grandchildren. Preceeding her in death. were two brothers, Herbert and John, and one sister, Mrs. Hedwig Schwitzer. Huebner Funeral, Home, Denison, was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth (Pelley) Adams (1900 - 1981 )

Elizabeth Irene Adams was born on Dec. 7, 1900 in Crawford County, the daughter of Patrick and Kathryn Kelly Pelley. She died Jan. 19, 1981at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 80. Irene was raised in Denison. She received her education in the St. Rose of Lima schools.

On Sept. 14, 1918, Irene was united in marriage to Glenn Adams at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. They made their first home on a farm near Manilla. Later they moved to Denison where they lived for many years. After retirement, Irene and her husband Glenn moved to Coos Bay, Ore. They continued to make their home there until Glenn's death in 1965. At this time Irene returned to Denison. For the past two years she has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Irene was preceded in death by two sons, Glenn and Charles. Irene's daughter Virginia Ahart died just a few hours after her mother on Monday.

Survivors include, one daughter Alma, Mrs. Eldon Reinhart of Carroll, 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at I St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Burial was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. The Rev. Father Allan Reicks officiated at the mass and graveside rites. Father Lloyd. W. White led the rosary at the funeral home the evening before the funeral. Pallbearers were Loren Adams, Larry Revenaugh, Harvey Miller, Floyd Kruse, Leonard Reis and Ed Ladwig. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home.

Ella (Gregosches) Jeschke (1914 - 1999 )

Ella Jeschke was born on September 16, 1914, the daughter of Jurgen and Emma Jepsen Gregosches. She died at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa on Sunday, January 31, 1999 at the age of eighty-four.

Ella was born in Schleswig, Iowa and was baptized in Christ and confirmed. She received her education in the Schleswig Community School, graduating with the class of 1933.

On February 25, 1936, Ella was united in marriage to William Jeschke at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. They settled on a farm near Denison, until moving to the Vail area. They were blessed with the birth of three children. The family subsequently moved to a farm near Schleswig until 1950, when they purchased a farm near Denison. In 1967, the couple retired from farming, but continued living on the farm until 1977, when they sold the farm and moved to Denison.

Ella was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison and their Ladies Aid. She was a loving, caring and devoted mother who never complained about anything When she was seventeen years old, the strong willed Ella made a solo trip to Iowa City to have surgery to correct a medical problem, enduring a six weeks absence from her family and friends in the Schleswig area. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and socializing in a game of cards. After retirement, Ella enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband and numerous friends from the Denison area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William on January 30, 1992, two sisters, Hilda Schneller and Adele Gregosches. Survivors include one daughter, Darlene Taylor and her husband, Bill of Reva, Virginia; two sons, Jerry Jeschke and his wife, Helen of Houston, Texas; James Jeschke and his wife, Stephanie of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Kristen Gumm, Julienne Schuh, Tim Taylor and Tracy Leggett and nine great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Jeschke and his wife, Frieda; Amelia Godberson; Frieda, Mrs. Otto Jeschke; Herman Jeschke, all of Denison; and Mabel Jeschke; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymns "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Those serving as pallbearers were: Harley Godbersen, Marlin Aschinger, Mario Henningsen, Berdell Jeschke, Dwight Boeck and Larry Boeck. The family invited everyone at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Ella (Stier) Neubaum (1908 - 2002 )

Ella Neubaum was born December 1, 1908, the daughter of Adolph and Mary Johannsen Stier. She died December 5, 2002 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-four. Ella received most of her education in a one-room school near the family farm.

She married Barney Neubaum in 1929. They met when youth groups from Barney's church and Ella's church got together for dances. The couple were blessed with the birth of five children. The family lived in Mapleton and later moved to Schleswig until 1944, when they moved to Manning.

Ella moved to Denison after Barney died in 1970. She joined Our Savior Lutheran Church and found great pleasure in the activities of the Ladies Group. She enjoyed working in the kitchen for potluck dinners, funerals and other activities. Ella loved to sew and do needlework. A great joy for many years was sewing quilts for World Relief, making over two hundred of them. She also loved working in the snack bar at the hospital. Ella also enjoyed working for "Telecare", a program where volunteers called elderly people daily to see if they needed assistance with anything. She did this for many years and also served as the volunteer organizer. When health problems developed Ella had to curtail many of the activities she enjoyed. She moved to Realife and found that she could play cards often, attend potluck dinners, and continue her church activities. In 1999, she moved to Eventide.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Barney; two daughters: Donna Joens and Betty Elnora; three brothers: Harvey, Herbert and Alvin; and three sisters: Irma Kruse, Carmen Keim, and Mildred Marquardt.

She is survived by one daughter, LaJune (Mrs. Kerry Smith) of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and two sons: Robert of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Gary of Easley, South Carolina; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. David Loeschen officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Selected music included "Nearer My God To Thee", "Take My Life and Let it Be", and "Beautiful Savior". Those serving as pallbearers were: Gary Neubaum, Kerry Smith, Joel Smith, Merlin Joens, James Smith, and Jim Joens. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served at Cronk's Cafe in Denison. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Ella (Haase) Arnold (1894 - 1966 )

Funeral services for Ella Sophie Marte (Haase) Arnold were, held at the Huebner Funeral home June 16 at 11 a.m, with Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Music was provided by the Lutheran ladies' choir, accompanied by Mrs. C. W. Schmidt. Pallbearers were Robert Arnold, Virgil Boeck, Glen Comstock, Edmund Haase, Herman Haase, Jr. and Vernon Haase. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery.

Daughter of Herman and Sophie (Beermann) Haase, she was born May 9, 1894 in Crawford county. In early infancy, she was baptized in the name of the Triune God and later confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church.

In 1918, she was married to Fred Arnold and to this union two children were born. They farmed south Denison until the death of her husband in 1938. She resided in Denison the past 25 years.

Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Loretta Strissel; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one brother, Herman Haase. Preceding her in death were her son, Elmer; three grandchildren; a brother, Edward and a sister, who died in infancy.

Elma V. (Kruse) Kroeger (1894 - 1982 )

Elma V. Kroeger was born on November 21, 1894 at Virginia, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Christena Brech Kruse. She died on Saturday morning, April 10, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 87.

Elma spent her early years in Illinois. Later the family moved to Bloomfield, Iowa. She received her formal education in the rural schools.

On June 26, 1926, Elma was united in marriage to Hans Kroeger at Bloomfield, Iowa. Together they made their home on a farm in the Schleswig community. In 1944, they retired and moved to Schleswig.

Then on June 10, 1964, Mr. Kroeger died. Since that time, Elma has continued to make Schleswig her home until early in January of this year, when she entered Eventide Lutheran Home.

Elma was baptized and later confirmed in the Christian faith. She was a long time member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Elma was preceded in death by two brothers and her son-in-law Clarence Wiese.

Survivors include one son, Eugene of Coral Springs, Florida; one daughter, Lois, Mrs. Fred Jacobs, of Schleswig; four grandchildren, one great-grandson, three brothers, Lyle Kruse of Bloomfield, Iowa, Otto Kruse of Beardstown, Illinois, and Lloyd Kruse of Aurora, Nebraska; and three sisters, Mrs. Inez Hining of Des Moines, Edith, Mrs. Hugo Kroeger of Long Beach, California and Mrs. Helen Good of Bloomfield, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 13, 1982 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Edwin Schmadke, Arlo Teut, Edwin Rusch, Blaine Schwingdorf, William Brockmann and Larry Grill.

Elmer A. Hamann (1915 - 1972 )

Elmer A. Hamann, the son of Albert Hamann and his wife Dora Kuhl, was born in Manilla, Iowa, on January 11, 1915, where he also grew to manhood. He served in the second World War and spent considerable time in Europe.

He was married to Louella Dammann on April 14, 1943. After their marriage, they made their home in Denison where he was active as mechanic and partsman in garage work. He was taken to the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha on July 23, and underwent surgery on July 26. He passed away on Monday afternoon, July 31, at the hospital, at the age of fifty seven years, six months and twenty days.

Surviving his death are his widow, Louella; his daughter Barbara, Mrs. Myron Peters and one sister, Lavern, Mrs. Elmer Spack.

Baptized in infancy, he was later confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. His funeral services was held at Zion Lutheran church in Denison with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and accompanied by Henry Henningsen who served as soloist. Interment was made in the Manning Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Wayne Coleman, Henry Eggert, Sam Kracht, Dr. Robert Logan, Peter McGinn and Merlin Rusch. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Elmer Arnold (1918 - 1964 )

Elmer Arnold was born in Crawford County on Dec. 24, 1918, the son of John Frederick Arnold and Ella Haase Arnold.

On Jan. 5, 1941 he was united in marriage to Phyllis McBride and to this union six children were born.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold resided on farms in the Buck Grove and Deloit vicinities until 1954 when they moved to Denison; after which time Mr. Arnold worked at the carpenter trade and for the Coca Cola Co. and the J. & O. Oil Co. Eight years ago he became a lineman for the Denison Municipal Utilities and continued with them until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by a son, Frederick, who died in infancy, and by his father, John Frederick Arnold.

Mr. Arnold leaves to mourn: his wife, Phyllis, five children Jean (Mrs. Russell Dillavou ) , Edward, Allen, Neila and Merlin; his mother, Mrs. Ella Arnold, a sister, Laretta (Mrs. Fred Strissel ) and one granddaughter, Valerie Dillavou.

He died Sept. 28 (1964) Funeral services were at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. O. Schlegelmilch officiated. Pallbearers were Homer Hollrah, Virgil Boeck, Robert Howard., Herman Kahl, Jr., Everett Quick and Werner Rath. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison.

Elmore Bryan (1916 - 1986 )

Elmore Bryan, 69, of Cambridge Drive, Spring Valley, Ill died at St. Margaret's Hospital, Monday, Jan. 6.

Elmore was born May 17, 1916, at Denison, Iowa, to Clarence and Pearl Riddle Bryan.

On Aug. 25, 1940, he was. married to Helen Christiansen in Denison. Elmore worked for Productigear Inc. of Chicago. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; one daughter, Linda, Mrs. Bob Jordan of Spring Valley, Ill.; two grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret, Mrs. J Clarence Greene of Sac City, Mildred, Mrs. Robert Schomer of Panama, and Frances, Mrs. Bud Frerichs of Ackley; two brothers, Harold of Las Vegas, Nv., and Clifford of Albany, Ore.; neices, nephews, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Howard and two brothers, E. C., "Sam," of Denison, and Glenn of Cave City, Ark.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 11 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Peru. with Rev. Paul H. Wold officiating. Burial was in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Elmhurst, Ill. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, Ill.

Elsa M. (Hadenfeld) Berndt (1889 - 1986 )

Elsa Maria Berndt was born on a farm in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, June 18, 1889, the daughter of Andreas and Wilhemina Neumann Hadenfeld. When she was three months old, the family moved to Germany, where they resided for three years before returning to Denison. Elsa was baptized by the Rev. Stroble at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, August 2, 1889, and was confirmed at the same church by the Rev. Lothringer April 5; 1903. She was raised in the Denison community and received her formal education in the local rural schools.

On May 20, 1913, Elsa was married to Carl H. Berndt at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. To this union two children were born, Gertrude and Raymond. They made their home in Denison where they operated a Wall Paper business out of their home from 1936 until 1980. Carl died November 16, 1985 and Elsa continued to reside at her home until Feb. 11, of this year when she moved to the Manilla Manor at Manilla.

Elsa died at the Manor September 11, 1986. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 97 years, two months, and 23 days. She was a lifetime member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was a former member of the Ladies Aid of the Church.

Including her parents and husband Elsa was preceded in death by two brothers, Erich and Henry Handenfeld, and two sisters, Hermina Young, and Margaret Buchanan.

She is survived by one daughter, Gertrude Holzfaster of Denison, one son and his wife, Raymond and Alberta Berndt of Carroll, one granddaughter and her husband, Donna Rae and Randy Jones of Des Moines, one great grandson Jeff Jones of Des Moines, one brother, Andreas Hadenfeld of Fort Collins, Colo., and two sisters, Anna Lockmiller and Christine Wittmaack both of Denison. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Sept. 14, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service was provided by the congregation singing ""Jesus Savior Pilot Me," 'Savior I Follow On," Abide With Me" and "Doxology." Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist. Honorary bearers included Robert Arnold, LeRoy Hennings, Kenneth Bunnell, and Arnold Hadenfeld. Pallbearers were Randy Jones, Jeff Jones, Alvin Overhue, Ernest Poggensee, Archie Mahoney, and Melvin Wittmaack. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie (Ehler) Bugge (1908 - 1974 )

Elsie Minnie (Ehler) Bugge, daughter of Julius and Emilia Krueger Ehler was born on a farm in Ida County near Schleswig, December 13, 1908 and died suddenly at her home near Charter Oak, Iowa, Sunday, June 23, 1974. Mrs. Bugge had attained the age of 65 years, 6 months and 10 days.

Mrs. Bugge was raised on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and attended Schleswig public schools.

October 19, 1927, she was united in marriage to Walter Bugge of Ida Grove, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Ida Grove one year before moving to the farm near Ricketts, where they lived at the time of her death.

Mrs. Bugge was a charter member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, a member of the Ladies Aid and LWML, served Denison LWML as Christian Growth Chairman, she taught Sunday School for 27 years. Mrs. Bugge was an Eventide delegate and Birthday Chairman and a member of the Eventide Auxiliary, served as a delegate to the Home-Finding Society at Fort Dodge , Iowa, and was a 4-H leader for two years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Anna and tour brothers Emil, John, Walter and Hellmuth.

Survivors include her husband; two children Karen, Mrs. Donald Yates of Galva, Iowa, and Gary of Hawaii; three grandchildren; one brother, Fred of Mapleton, Iowa, several relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26, 1974, at 10:30 a. m, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church at Ricketts, Iowa with Pastor Mark Broecker officiating. Mrs. Loren Lee served as organist and the congregation sang "I'm I But A Stranger Here" and "What. A Friend We Have In Jesus". The following served as casket bearers: John (Bud) Ehler, DeWayne Ehler, Leon Ehler, Leo Dose, Virgil Pfalzgraf and Louie Ewoldt. Interment was made in the MorganTownship Cemetery,

Emil F. Bruns (1899 - 1975 )

Emil F. Bruns son of William and Marie Grief Bruns was born on a farm near Shinner, Texas on Feb. 5, 1889 and died at the Crawford Memorial Hospital Denison, Febr. 5, 1975 having reached the age of 86 years. Mr. Bruns was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. He attended rural schools and lived on the farm all his life. He came to Crawford at the age of 21 years.

Dec. 2, 1914 he was united in marriage to Anna Beerman of Denison. To this union two daughters and one son were born: They lived on farms south of Denison all their married life. Dec. 2, 1974 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Mr. Bruns was preceeded in death by his parents, one brother William and one sister Sophie.

Survivers include his wife Anna, two daughters Leora Neumann and her husband Harvey of Denison, Arlene Ruberg and her husband Ray of Moville, one son Leonard and his wife Betty Jean of Bakersfield Calif, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two brothers Hugo and Ernest, two sisters Emma Bruns and Hilda, Mrs. Max Langhoff all of Shiner, Texas, several nieces and nephews other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Sat. Febr. 8, 1975 at 10:30 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with the Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and Henry Henningsen sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Just as I Am". Pallbearers were Ronald Ruberg, Kenneth Ruberg, Lowell Neumann, Darrell Neumann, Verle Neumann and Russell Bruns. Interment was made in the Lutheran. Cemetery. Huebner Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

Emil Hannemann (1890 - 1970 )

Emil Hannemann, son of Gustav and Catherine nee Gehrt Hannemann, was born in Welcome, Minnesota on May 8, 1890, and died Saturday, August 1, 1970, Battle Creek, having reached the age of 80 years, 2 months, and 13 days.

He was married to Alvena Bielenberg February 14, 1917 at Schleswig by the Rev. Wetzler. He previously farmed in Morgan Township until his retirement, after which he was a resident of the Schleswig community for 13 years. Mr. Hannemann was a member of the United Church Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Alvena; two sons, Bruce of Schleswig and Byron of Spirit Lake; one brother, Ted Hannemann of Oklahoma; one sister, Dora Paulsen of Mapleton: four grandchildren and one great-grand-child.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and one infant daughter.

Services were held Tuesday, August 4, 1970 at the United Church of Christ with Rev. A. F. Rinne officiating. Mrs. John Evers was organist and accompanied Jeanette Grell and Evelyn Martens who sang, "Take Thou My Hand And Lead Me" and "Heaven Is My Home". Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ed Gosch, James Else, Martin Wodtke, Leonard Klamner, Lawrence Bartels and Merlin Overhue.

Emilie (Schumann) Backhaus (1890 - 1974 )

Funeral services for Mrs. Emilie Backhaus were held Tuesday morning, February 12, 1974, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The choir sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and the congregation sang "I Know That My Redeemer Lives".

Emilie Emma Backhaus was, born January 13, 1890, to Bernhard Schumann and his wife Marie Wind in Grant Township. She was baptized, confirmed, and married in Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township.

She was married to Wm, Backhaus on October 14, 1909 by Pastor R. Amstein. After their marriage, the couple farmed three miles west of Schleswig until the spring of 1943 when they retired in Schleswig. Her husband died February 27, 1966.

Because of failing health, she moved to Eventide, Denison in June 1971. She was hospitalized at Crawford County Memorial Hospital on January 5, 1974 and died there on February 10, 1974. She attained to 84 years and 27 days.

She is survived by three children: Harry of Westside, Iowa, Bernice, wife of Irwin Bruhn of Mapleton, Iowa and Ella Hamann of Schleswig; 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Schumann of Omaha, Nebraska and Otto Schumann of Sioux City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and , two sisters.

Pallbearers were: Robert Wiebers, Burdell Jensen, Willie Heinse, Carl Bakchaus, Freddie Backhaus and Alvin Heinse.

Emil W. Brockman (1900 - 1977 )

Emil William Brockman was born on June 19, 1900, near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of William and Katherine Lahrsen Brockman. He died on September 19, 1977 at his home in Schleswig, Iowa, at the age of 77.

As a young boy Emil was raised on the family farm near Schleswig and received his formal education in the rural schools. Later as a teenager the family moved into Schleswig where Emil attended Schleswig High School.

On November 24, 1927, he was united in marriage to Florence Chamberlin at Vail, Iowa. To this union were born a son and a daughter. After marriage Emil and his wife Florence lived in Omaha, Nebraska for a period of time. Later they moved back to Schleswig where Emil owned and operated Brockman Produce. He retired in 1969 and continued to live in Schleswig.

Emil was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith and for many years was a member of the Episcopal church. He was a retired member of the Schleswig Volunteer Fire Department and the Schleswig Community Club.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence in 1969, one brother and three sisters.

Survivors include, one son William Brockman of Schleswig, one daughter Barbara Jochims of Carroll and four grandchildren. Also by two sisters, Mrs. Ella Friedrichson and Mrs. Hulda Petersen both of Colonial Manor in Odebolt.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 22, 1977 at 10:30 a. m , at the Huebner funeral Home, Denison, Iowa. The Rev. Fred Moore of the United Church of Christ officiated at the services. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery at Schleswig. Pallbearers Included Fred Wellendorf, Emil Petersen, DeWayne Sonksen, Kim Brockman, Terry Brockman and Jeffery Jochims.

Emma (Schneider) Riessen (1930 - 1996 )

Emma Hildegard Marie (Schneider) Riessen was born March 31, 1930 near Denison, Iowa in Milford Township to Paul Herman Schneider and Eherau (Emma) Quandt. She died on May 10. 1996, after a long battle with cancer.

Emmy was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on March 25, 1945. She graduated from the Denison Community High School in May of 1948 and worked briefly at an office in Denison, until her father died and she stayed at home.

Emmy was married to Harold Harry Delbert Riessen on December 23, 1951 at Zion Lutheran Church. Harold and Emy took up farming in the Schleswig area at various locations, first, east of Schleswig and then two different farms west of Schleswig. In November 1987, they moved from their farm west of town to a house in Schleswig.

To this union Emmy was blessed with four children: Carol, Connie, Harry and Brian and eight grandchildren. Throughout her life, Emmy enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing, canning and cooking, reading the Bible, as well as spending time with her family and friends. Prior to her illness, many evenings were spent going to dances, bowling or playing cards. Emmy was a member of the local VFW and the Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid, at which she has held various positions. She and Harold had done some traveling over the years, the latest of which was Mexico and California.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Esther Schneider; one brother, Paul Schneider; one sister-in-law, Edith Schneider; three brothers-in-law, William Schneller, Henry Riessen and Erwin Riessen and one son-in-law, Terry Wiegel.

Her survivors include her husband, Harold; her children, Carol Korwes and husband, Jack, of Ida Grove, Connie Riessen of Storm Lake, Harry Riessen and wife, Kay, of Schleswig and Brian Riessen and wife, Heather, of Denison; eight grandchildren, Angelia Wiegel, Nathan Korwes, Nicholas, Mathew, Christina and Timothy Riessen, Skielair and Sierra Riessen; one step-grandson, Shane Wiegel; one sister, Rose Mae Schneller of Denison; two brothers, Martin and his wife Shirley Schneider of Denison and Herman Schneider of Deloit; four sisters-in-law, Jeannetta Knief and her husband, Cyrenus of Deloit, Marian Riessen of Harlan, Dorothy Riessen and Elfie Riessen, both of Schleswig; two brothers-in-law, Herbert Riessen and wife, Reva of Ida Grove and Ernie Riessen and wife, Delores of Schleswig; plus several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 13, 1996, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregrational hymns, "Rock Of Ages', "Just As I Am", "How Great Thou Art", "Abide With Me", and "The Old Rugged Cross". A tape of "I'm But A Stranger Here" was played during the service. Honorary Pallbearers were; Angelia Wiegel, Nathan Korwes, Nicholas Riessen, Mathew Riessen, Christina Riessen, Timothy Riessen, Skielar Riessen and Sierra Riessen. Pallbearers were; David Schneider, Albert Schneller, Roland Schneider, David Kult, Dan Riessen and Russ Riessen. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma (Rosburg) Bockelmann (1896 - 1976 )

Mrs. William Bockelmann of Maple Crest Apt. died June 12, at the age of 80 years, one month and 28 days.

Mrs. Bockelmann the former Emma Rosburg, daughter of Adolph Rosburg and Elizabeth (nee) Stamer, was born April 15, 1896 at Charter Oak. She was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Township Church.

She was married July 8, 1915 to William Bockelmann, They farmed near Charter Oak most of their married life. They moved into Charter Oak in 1947. Mr. Bockelmann died Nov. 8, 1968. She moved to Maple Crest Apt. in 1972.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include a daughter (Arlene) Mrs. Ferd Kiepe, Mapleton, four sons, Herman, Mapleton, Albin, Valley Nebraska, LuVern, Phoenix, Ariz., and William Jr. of Ida Grove; three sisters, Mrs. Maria Leeper, Mapleton, Mrs. Ed (Lena) Goslar, Ute and Mrs. Freda Plagge, Blanco, Texas; 14 grandchildren, 27 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held at 10:30 on Tuesday, June 15, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, with Rev. Robert Leege officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery at Charter Oak under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak. Pallbearers were all grandsons, LoWayne, Gene, Dan, Donald and David Bockelmann, and Leon Kiepe.

Emma (Lorenzen) Behrmann (1896 - 1983 )

Emma Christine Brigette Behrmann was born on Dec. 6, 1896 near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Johannes and Louise Hansen Lorenzen. She died July 4, 1983 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 86.

Emma was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Christian faith. She spent her early years on a farm near the Schleswig community. Emma received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On May 8, 1917, Emma was united in marriage to Hans Behrmann in Schleswig. Together they made their home in Schleswig where Mr. Behrmann was employed. They were blessed with two children and later a nephew William Meyerink who came to make his home with the family. Later Mr. Behrmann purchased a grocery and dry goods store in Schleswig. For many years, Emma was active in the store and the Schleswig business community. After her husbands death 1965, Emma remained in the store until her retirement at the age of 82.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Emma was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose and Theresa and one brother in infancy.

Survivors include, one son Byron Behrmann of Schleswig, one daughter, Lois, Mrs. Lorenz Ipsen of Des Moines, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one great great grandson and three step great grandchildren.

Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on July 7, at 10:30 A.M. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore of the United Church of Christ officiated at the services. Hymns for the services include, In The Garden and Take My Hand Precious Lord. Pallbearers included, Doug Lyon, Larry Grill, Roger Wonder, Alan Sedore, Ron Clausen and Don Thompson. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Emma (Blunk) Grill (1892 - ? )

Emma Auguste Blunk, daughter of John Blunk and Anna nee Moeller, was born Oct. 23, 1892 in Hayes township, Crawford county, where she also grew to womanhood.

She was married to Grover Grill on Feb. 10, 1912, a union to which four children were born. They farmed in Hanover township near Deloit and Denison until coming to make their home in Denison in 1923. Mr. Grill died in 1955.

Mrs. Grill was taken to the Memorial hospital on Sept. 31 and here she underwent surgery. She died at the hospital early Monday morning Sept. 30. Mrs. Grill was a baptized and confirmed member of the Zion Lutheran church and an active member of the Ladies Aid.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 2 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery in Denison with the following acting pallbearers: Don Blunk, Edward Blunk, Ben Boeck, Vern Hintz, Carl Kolls and Herbert Quandt.

She is survived by three sons, Martin and John of Denison and Wilbur of Waterloo. Also surviving are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Vogt of Denison and Mrs. Hulda Vogt of Ontario, Ore. Her husband and one son, Floyd, preceded her in death.

Emma (Lohse) Jacobsen (1875 - 1952 )

Emma Lohse daughter of Hans and Lena Lohse, was born Aug. 22, 1875 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She attended country schools and remained at home until her marriage.

She was united in marriage to Matt Jacobsen June 21, 1900. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Ida Grove, June 21, 1950.

Mr. and Mrs. Jacobsen lived on the farm in Crawford county until 1908, at which time they moved to Ida Grove where they lived for the past 44 years. She passed away, after a long illness, at her home early Monday morning Feb. 18, 1952, at the age of 76 years and 6 months.

She is survived by her husband Matt; one brother, Ted Lohse of Schleswig and 3 sisters, Lena, Mrs. William Reese and Bertha, Mrs Louie Wellendorf, both of Schleswig, and Alma, Mrs. Ferd Johannsen of Ida Grove, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, also two brothers and one sister during the flue epidemic of 1918.

Mrs. Jacobsen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in her girlhood. She united with the Methodist church May 13, 1951. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and of the V. F. W. and American Legion Auxilliaries and was a past President. of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services Were held Wednesday in the Methodist church at 2 p. m. with Rev. K. E. Whitney officiating. Mrs. Purl Vckery sang "My Faith in Thee," and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Mrs. C. K. Lahman. Burial was in the Ida Grove cemetery. Pallbearers were Hans Wellendorf, Hugo Reese, Paul Johannsen, John Jacobsen, Magnus Jacobsen and Rudolph Heide.

Erma (Jensen) Neumann (1931 - 1998 )

Erma Neumann was born January 28, 1931, the daughter of Arnold and Katherine Brocksen Jensen. She died at the University Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Monday, October 5, 1998 at the age of sixty-seven.

Erma was born in Schleswig, Iowa where she grew up. She was baptized in Christ at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, February 22, 1931 and confirmed her faith in her Lord and Savior there on March 25, 1945. She received her education in the Schleswig Community Schools, graduating from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1948.

After completing her education, Erma was united in marriage to Marvin Neumann at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church on June 4, 1948. The couple settled in the Kiron area and were blessed with the birth of four children.

Erma remained at home caring for her family until they were grown before she began working at the New Process Laundry in Denison, working there for several years before taking a position with Farmland Industries. She remained at Farmland for more than fifteen years before retiring. After her retirement from Farmland, she worked part time as a waitress at Okomos in Deloit. Erma was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family. Additionally, she enjoyed the friendships she made through the years and was fond of the social events she shared with those whom she loved.

In her leisure time, Erma enjoyed gardening, cooking, puzzles and socializing with her family and friends at cards, bowling as evidenced by the league trophies she accumulated through the years as a member of bowling teams in Denison and Odebolt, but was especially happy when she was involved with her grandchildren's sporting events. She was a member of the Schleswig Senior Citizens and St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron where she was devoted to her Lord and Savior through church programs, such as teaching Sunday School and Bible Class and encouraging others to worship.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents, and one daughter, Shirley in 1968. Survivors include her husband, Marvin of Kiron; two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Vicki of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Jim and his friend, Kandra of Kiron; one daughter, Diane Riessen and her husband, Brad of Schleswig; eleven grandchildren, Melissa and David Wentzel, Cody Johnson, Scott and Jesse Neumann, Brett, Angie, Justin and Shane Neumann, Matt, Kalin and Josh Kluver and Nissa Martinson and one sister, Ramona "Sneezy" Nelson of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M., Wednesday, October 7, 1998 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Hilmer Hafner officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Kiron. Lois Gronau provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns: "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound", "For All the Saints Who from Their Labors Rest" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were: Scott and Jesse Neumann, Melissa and David Wentzel, Shane Neumann, Angie Neumann, Justin Neumann, Cody Johnson and Brett Neumann. Pallbearers were: Romanan Jenkins, Dennis Moeller, Kevin Koenck, Jim Powell, Allan Preul and Lyle Kropf. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Erna L. (Teut) Nihsen (1920 - 2001 )

Erna Louise Teut Nihsen of Charter Oak was born March 3, 1920 on a farm three miles north of Ricketts, in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Anna Wiedemann Teut. She was baptized in Christ on April 25, 1920 and later confirmed on April 9, 1933 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, rural Charter Oak, Iowa. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Country School, rural Charter Oak. She then helped her mother on the farm.

She married Gilbert Nihsen June 23, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. After their marriage they farmed in the Schleswig and Ricketts Communities.

Erna was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, where she served as president. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, gardening and raising chickens.

Survivors include her husband, Gilbert of Charter Oak; one son, LoWayne and his wife, Carol Nihsen of Port Orchard, Washington; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Kristian, Jar-rod, Natasha; two great-granddaughters, Mercedes and Hailee; one sister, Ruby Waderich of Mapleton and a brother, Everett and his wife, Betty Teut of Omaha. Also six sisters-in-law, Christine Teut, Clara Teut, both of Schleswig; Arlene Teut of Mapleton; Irene Teut of Denison; Ruth Teut of Ute; and Mabel Kolbaum of Kiron.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Russell Dean and Dallas Lee; nine brothers, Elmer, Melvin, Ralph, Herbert, Arlo, Kermit, Waldo, Orville and Raymond and his wife, Dorothy; two sisters, Edna and her husband, Marcus Wodtke and Evelyn Teut; one brother-in-law, August Waderich.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 25, 2001 at the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Lee provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "For All the Saints". Honorary pallbearers were: Natasha Nihsen, Mercedes Nihsen, Kristi Nihsen and Hailee Nihsen. Pallbearers were Zachary Bielenberg, Jarrod Nihsen, Jeremy Nihsen, Phil Ketelsen, Vernis Nihsen and Ron Teut. A Prayer Service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 24, 2001 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak.

Ernestine Hesse (1874 - 1964 )

Ernestine Hesse, born January 22, 1874, at Saxen, Germany, died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Wednesday evening, September 2, 1964, at the age of 90 years, 7 months, and 11 days. She was baptized and confirmed in her youth in Germany and came to the United States at the age of 18.

She was united in marriage to August Hesse on December 25, 1894. This union was blessed with one son and five daughters, Robert Hesse; Hulda, Mrs Charles Woodford; Louise, Mrs Walter Kruger all of Denison, Ida, Mrs Henry Kollbaum of Bronsen. One daughter Helen, and her husband preceded her in death.

Those left to mourn include one brother, Theodore, and one sister, Ida of Texas, 28 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 5, 1964, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Words of comfort were by Rev Willard Petersen. Music was by Mrs John Evers, organist, duet by Mrs Don Meyer and Mrs Ernie GrelL Hymns were "Rock of Ages" and "The Lord is My Shepherd." Pallbearers were LeRoy Winey, Wayne Kruger, Leslie Kruger, George Segebart, Eugene Petersen, and Melroy Hottendorf. Interment was at Morgan Cemetery.

Earnie H. Riessen (1918 - 2004 )

Earnie Heinrich Martin Riessen was born October 6, 1918. the son of Henry and Dora Hollander Riessen. He died on Saturday. October 2, 2004 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-five.

Earnie was born on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on March 10,1919 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and later confirmed there on April 9, 1933. He received his education in a rural school near his home. Earnie entered the United States Army, serving with the 41st Division in New Guinea, Australia and the Philippines during World War II.

On February 5, 1950, Earnie was united in marriage to Delores Jeschke at the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Hanover Township. Charter Oak. The couple made their home on various farms in the Schleswig area and were blessed with the birth of three children.

Earnie was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and the Schleswig American Legion and VFW. He loved farming and his family, especially his grandchildren. In his leisure time Earnie enjoyed bowling and going to card parties.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Viola and Delores; five brothers, Sonny in infancy, Erwin, Herbert, Henry Jr. and Harold and his wife, Emmy.

Survivors include his wife, Delores of Schleswig; two sons, Robert Riessen and his wife, Marlane of Bennett, Colorado; Russell Riessen and his wife, Cindy of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; one daughter, Rebecca Hanlin and her husband, Richard of Schleswig; eight grandchildren, Eric Riessen and wife, Dana of Cary, North Carolina; Amber Kring and husband, Dana of Denver, Colorado; Aaron Riessen of Denver, Colorado; Robbin Driebelbis and husband, Craig of Gretna. Nebraska; Rana Quandt and husband, Scott of Carroll; Ryan Hanlin of Audubon; Heidi Mizer and husband, Doug of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Haley Riessen of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Breanna and Saige Quandt and Caleb Driebelbis; one sister, Dorothy Riessen of Schleswig. Also several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elfie Riessen of Schleswig, Reva Riessen of Ida Grove, Marian Riessen of Harlan, Marvin Jeschke and wife, Ruth; Burdell Jeschke and wife, Marilyn, all of Denison; Darlo Jeschke of Kiron; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Harry Riessen as he sang "The Old Rugged Cross". The congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound", "How Great Thou Art" and "Lift High the Cross". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Robbin Driebelbis, Haley Riessen, Aaron Riessen, Eric Riessen, Ryan Riessen, Amber Kring, Rana Quandt and Heidi Mizer. Pallbearers and Military Honors were performed by the V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them at the church in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Ervin C. Neddermeyer (1917 - 1997 )

Ervin Christian Fritz Neddermeyer was born April 1, 1917 in Charter Oak Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Marvin and Augusta Hansen Neddermeyer. Ervin passed away Monday, June 30, 1997 at the Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa. He reached the age of eighty years and two months.

Ervin spent his early years on a farm in Willow Township. He received his early childhood education at St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak, Iowa. Ervin was baptized on April 15, 1917 at St. John Lutheran Church and later confirmed there on March 29, 1931. After completing his schooling, he helped his father on the farm.

On October 2, 1938, Ervin was united in marriage to Helma Rickert at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. This marriage sustained them both for more than fifty-eight years. Ervin and Helma made their home on a farm in Hanover Township, until 1984 when they retired and moved to Charter Oak, Iowa.

Besides farming, Ervin also did custom shelling and trucking for twenty years. Ervin was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as elder and also on the finance board. Ervin was a loving and caring husband and father who enjoyed his grandchildren.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Carl and Herbert, three sisters, Edna Nemitz, Erna Lill and Esther Iversen.

Survivors include his wife, Helma of Charter Oak; his children, Gailen of Omaha, Nebraska; Edward and wife, Arlis of Schleswig; Larry and wife, Sheryl; Marion and wife, Renee all of Charter Oak; and Denise and husband, Bruce H. Meeves of Portland, Oregon; seventeen grandchildren, seventeen great-grand-children and one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Adolph Neddermeyer of Charter Oak; one brother-in-law, J. W. Iversen of Schleswig; one sister-in-law, Leona Bohlmann and her husband, Herb of Ricketts and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 3, 1997 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L. C. Gebhardt and Vicar Jon Winterfeldt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Abide With Me". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Christy Neddermeyer, Ashley Neddermeyer, Bonnie Herbert, Melissa Keeney, Angela Mumm, Janine Strauss, Tammy Dyson, Andrea Berka, Sierra Meeves and Vicky Reis. Pallbearers were: Matthew Neddermeyer, Keith Neddermeyer, Aaron Neddermeyer, Gary Neddermeyer, Colin Neddermeyer, Eric Neddermeyer and Mandy Meeves. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Esther M. (Hast) Beerman (1899 - 1980 )

Esther Marie Beerman was born March 23, 1899 on a farm near Denison, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Rink Hast. She died Jan. 19, 1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, having attained the age of 80 years, nine months and 26 days. Esther was raised on the farm and attended the local rural schools.

She was united in marriage with Louis Beerman on Aug. 31, 1921 in Denison. They made their home on a farm south of Denison for their entire married life. Louis preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1967 and Esther continued to make her home on the farm south of Denison.

Since May of 1979, she had resided at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. She was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Denison having been baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Evelyn Hast and her son-in-law, Dr. Roger Diercks.

She is survived by one daughter, Lois Diercks of Denison; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two brothers, Raymond Hast of Phoenix, Ariz., and Adolph Hast of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Mrs. Viola Sievert of Denison and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 22 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kenneth C. Haydon officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mrs. Morris Kuhlmann as organist. Pallbearers were Vernon Lueck, Joseph Vaage, Leslie Rath, John Shields, Russell Boeck and Bryce Tucker. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. The Maxwell Funeral Home, Denison, was in charge of the arrangements.

Esther (Hansen) Nystrom (1908 - 1998 )

Esther Nystrom, 89, formerly of Boone, Iowa died at the Ogden Manor in Ogden, Iowa on Tuesday evening, September 15, 1998 due to congestive heart failure. She had been a resident at the Ogden Manor in Ogden, Iowa since May of this year.

She was born on December 9, 1908 in Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Henry P. and Olga (Burkhe) Hansen.

On January 25, 1941 she married Herbert W. Nystrom at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Esther was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and AARP.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert in August of 1990, 3 sisters, Rose Hansen, Lucille Else, and Teresa Johannsen.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law Gail "Hank" and Lynda Nystrom of Johnson City, Tennessee; one grandson, Robert Nystrom of St. Louis, Missouri; one granddaughter, Cari Nystrom of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; one sister, Caroline Paulsen of Schleswig, Iowa; nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.

Services were held on Saturday morning, September 19th at 10:30 a.m. at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone with Rev. Dean Fullerton officiating. Interment was at the Linwood Park cemetery in Boone, Iowa. Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone was in charge of arrangements.

Ferdinand A. Pautsch (abt 1897 - 1987 )

Ferdinand August Robert Pautsch was born in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Amel Pautsch and Anna Lill Pautsch. He died on June 4, 1987 at the age of 90 years.

Ferdinand received his education in rural schools. On June 2, 1918 he was married to Elsie Margaret Jacobs at the St. John's Lutheran Church, in Charter Oak. To this union seven children were born.

They farmed in the Charter Oak area for 40 years. After retirement in 1961 they moved into Charter Oak. Ferdinand moved to the Denison Care Center in 1979. Ferdinand was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. He served on the St. John's Lutheran Church board for 25 years and the school board for 12 years.

In addition to his parents Ferdinand was preceded in death by his wife Elsie on March 29, 1983, two great grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include four daughters: Irene Teut of Denison, Lavina Wiebers of Schleswig, Marian Boeck of Denison, Orpha and her husband Burdell Jensen of Schleswig; sons: Lester and his wife Arlene Pautsch of Rantoel, Ill. Lloyd and his wife Jennie Pautsch of Ute and Russ and his Mary Pautsch of Sac City, twenty four grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren, two sisters: Elna Engelking of Battle Creek, and Anna and her husband Melvm Bohlander of Sioux City; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Gus Pautsch Charter Oak.

Ferdinand F. Brensel (1913 - 1976 )

Ferdinand F. Brensel, son of August and Sena Johannsen Brensel, was born in Crawford County on June 3, 1913, and died Dec. 2, 1976, in Manilla Manor at Manilla, at the age of 63 years, five months, and 29 days. Mr. Brensel was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended rural schools.

On Dec. 15, 1937, he was united in marriage to Esther Kruse of Denison. They made their home on a farm near Denison. Two sons and a daughter were born to this union. Mr. Brensel farmed until 1958, when they moved to Denison where he was in the trucking business which he operated until 1962 when his health failed. He has been making his home in the Manilla Manor for the past two months.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, John, who died in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Esther, two sons, LeRoy of Sussex, Wis., and Wayne of Denison, and one daughter, Joleen (Mrs. Russell Kepford) of St. Louis, Mo., six grandchildren and one step grandchild, two sisters, Amanda (Mrs. John Meggers) and Adela (Mrs. Roy Kropf) both of Denison, nieces and nepnews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 6, in the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, with Pastor E.E. Greene officiating. Pallbearers were William Kruse, Larry Kruse, Robert Kropf, John Petersen, Irvin Schultz and Reynold Johannsen. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Garden with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ferdinand J. Neubauer (1897 - 1992 )

Ferdinand Johann Lawrence Neubauer was born on a farm in Grant Township, Ida County, Dec. 17, 1897, the son of Karl August and Mary Sophie Gehrts Neubauer. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at the Grant Township Lutheran Church May 11, 1988(sic), and later confirmed in his Christian faith at the same church. Ferd was raised on the family farm in Grant Township and received his formal education in the rural schools near their home.

On Dec. 3, 1919, Ferd was united in marriage with Margaret Katherine Ramm at the Lutheran Parsonage in Ida Grove with the Rev. Brauer officiating the ceremony. Ferd and Margaret made their home on a farm near Schleswig where they farmed together for 17 years.

In 1937 they moved to Denison where Ferd operated an oil station for five years; was employed at the Egg Plant; Rex Pool Hall; and for seven years at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital. He retired at age 68 for health reasons. He spent his retirement years in Denison where much of his time was spent with his favorite past time of playing cards.

On March 4, 1991, he moved to the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove. Since April 21, 1991 he had resided at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where his death occurred Monday evening, March 23, 1992. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 94 years, three months and six days. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

Including his parents, Ferd was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Edward, Herbert and Alfred Neubauer.

Those left to cherish his memory include is wife of over 72 years, Margaret Neubauer of Denison, one sister-in-law, Erma Ramm of Mapleton, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 27, 1992, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa, with the Rev. James M. Schatz officiating. Music for the service was provided by Rubie Kastner singing "Beyond the Sunset" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" with Evelyn Johnson serving as organist. Pallbearers included John Lorenzen, Elmer Rusch, Arnold Jepsen, Nick Wilken, Ricky Anderson and Glenn Segebart. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances (Burk) Abbe (1911 - 1983 )

Frances Clara Emilie Abbe was born on May 18, 1911 in Morgan Township, near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Charley and Emma Petersen Burk.

She died on early Wednesday morning, September 7, 1983 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in, Denison, Iowa at the age of 72. Frances was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Christian faith. She spent her formative years on a farm near Schleswig. Frances received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On December 21, 1932, Frances was united in marriage to Raymond Abbe at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. Together they made their home on a farm in Grant Township until 1966 when they retired and moved into Schleswig. In December of 1982 Frances and Ray celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include, her husband, Raymond of Schleswig, one sister, Mrs. LuVern Schnieder of Battle Creek, Iowa, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Hedwig Abbe of Schleswig. Also surviving is one neice, Sandra and her husband Paul Burton of Danbury, Iowa and one nephew, Orlan Abbe and his wife Darlene of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 9, 1983 at 10: 00 A.M. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Richard Nelson officiated at the services. Mrs. Leory Hight served as organist with the Immanuel Ladies Choir. Hymns included, Rock of Ages and How Great Thou Art. Pallbearers were Larry Abbe, Kelly Burton, Terry Abbe, Rudie Koch, Vernus Petersen and La Wayne Gronau. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig, Iowa.

Frank Peters (1897 - 1972 )

Frank Peters passed away suddenIy at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on August 29, 1972, after undergoing surgery earlier in the week.

Mr. Peters was the son of Franz Peters and Caroline Rothe and was born in Crawford County on January 2, 1897. He farmed most of his life and moved to town with his wife, whom he married in 1925. His wife Amelia preceded him in death in June of 1970.

Mr. Peters was a member of the United Church of Christ having served in recent years as a church concilman and treasurer of the congregation. He also belonged to the former Men's Brotherhood of the church.

He is survived by a son Loren and daughter-in-law, Ila of Schleswig, three grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, three sisters, Dora Schwarz of Schleswig, Anna Saxson of Kimball, Nebraska and Alvena Lyons of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 1, 1972, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa, with the Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. G. M. Johnson sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Pallbearers were: Edgar Else, John Cassens, Gerald Meeves, Burdell Jensen, Gilbert Kastner and Arthur Lafrentz. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Freda (Clausen) Jeschke (1908 - 1987 )

Freda Anna Marie Jeschke was born on April 3, 1908, in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Chris Clausen and Emma Namanny Clausen. She died at the Denison Care Center on September 30, 1987, at the age of 79 years. Freda spent her early years in Soldier Township and attended Immanuel Lutheran School there.

On June 2, 1926, she and Bernhard C. Jeschke of Hanover Township were united in marriage at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Soldier Township. To this union four children were born. Freda and Ben farmed in Soldier Township for four years. They then moved to a farm in Hanover Township. They made their home there until the fall of 1973 when they moved into Denison. Ben died on July 5, 1979. Freda continued to live in her home until entering the Denison Care Center late this year. Freda was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid and a Sewing Club of Hanover Township.

In addition to her parents and husband, Freda was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence, who died in infancy and one great grandson, Nicholas Erin Jeschke.

Survivors include her children: Delores and her husband, Earnie Riessen of Schleswig, Marvin Jeschke and his wife, Ruth of Denison, Berdell Jeschke and his wife, Marilyn of Denison, and Darlo Jeschke and his wife, Vera of Denison; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and one brother, Harvey Clausen of Deloit.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 3, 1987, at 10:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. James W. Ristvedt officiated. Mrs. Darold Kahl served as organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist and congregational singing. Selections were "Just As I Am "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Pallbearers were Russell Riessen, Jim Jeschke, Kevin Jeschke, Keith Jeschke, Korey Jeschke, Robert Riessen and Richard Hanlin.

Fred Beerman (1891 - 1974 )

Fred Beerman, son of Fritz and Margarthe Peters Beerman, was born on a farm in Crawford County near Denison Dec. 2, 1891, and died at his home in Denison, Sunday, May20, 1974 at the age of 82. Mr. Beerman attended rural schools and grew to manhood on the farm.

In 1918 he married Dollie Comstock of Denison. They had one daughter, Lucille. They lived on a farm near Denison until retiring to Denison in 1945. Mrs. Beerman died in 1949. Mr. Beerman's health had been failing the past six months.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife. Dollie, four brothers, Louis, Henry, and two infant brothers and one sister, Marie.

Survivors Include one daughter, Lucille and her husband, Herschel Gabrielson of Denison, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. George Evers of Denison.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 22, 1974 at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison, with Rev. Jerold Irvin officiating. Burial was at the Oakland Cemetery.

Frederick L. Podey (1932 - 1985 )

Frederick L. Podey was born on Sept. 1, 1932, in Crawford County, the son of Frank and Ruth Marshal Podey. He died Thursday evening, April, 25, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 52.

Frederick spent his early years on his family's farm in Crawford County. He received his formal education in the Crawford County schools, graduating from the Denison High School in 1950.

Frederick was united in marriage to the former Cleone Schroeder on Nov. 28, 1954. Together they made their home on a farm in Crawford County. In August of 1955, Frederick entered the United States Army. He completed his tour of duty in 1956 and served in the Army reserves until 1963. Frederick served as trustee for Milford Township since 1970. He was a member of the Milford Township Election Board, the Friendly Farms Club and an honorary member of the Hayes Township Schutzen Verein.

Frederick was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Cleone of Denison; three daughters Lucinda, Mrs. Monte Crichton and Sandra, Mrs. Dennis NobiIing, both of Vail and Donna at home in Denison; and two sons, Lyle of Westside and Roger of Denison. Also surviving are four grandchildren; two sisters, Lois, Mrs. Gus Eckerman of Harlan and Phyllis, Mrs. Warren Lundell of Boone as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Steven Bomely officiated at the services and graveside rites. Kevin Freese served as organist with David Overstreet serving as soloist. Serving as pallbearers were Donald Healy, Joe, Siegner, Randy Healy, Tom Dalton, Joe Kral and Virgil Hugeback. Serving, as honorary pallbearers were Edward Healy, James Miller, Marlin Aschinger, Earl Herrig, William Healy and Virgil Denker. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Fred J. Beeck (1915 - 1973 )

Fred J. Beeck was born in Burg Fehmarn, Germany on October 30, 1915 to Frederick Beeck and his wife Margaret nee Lafrentz. He came to the United States in 1924, making his living by farming.

On September 30, 1936, he married Lillian nee Jepsen and they farmed in the Schleswig area. Mr. Beeck passed away on Sunday June 10, 1973, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, after an illness of several weeks.

Besides his wife, he is survived by six children, Art of Charter Oak, Bob of Denison, Larry of Schleswig, Judy (Mrs. Larry) Strandburg of Denison, Jane (Mrs. Doug) Dowty of Sioux City, and Lorna Beeck; one sister Else (Mrs. F. T. ) Jepsen of Charter Oak; thirteen grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 13, 1973, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Rev. R.J. Ratzlaff offciating. Mrs. John Evers was the organist, Art Beeck sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Going Home". Pallbearers were: John H. Gosch, Louis B. Jepsen, Virgil Winquist, William Jeschke, William L. Gehring and J. Henry Schroeder. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Fred J. Petersen (1881 - 1967 )

Funeral services for Fred J. Petersen were held Monday afternoon at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Walter Stark, of Mapleton conducted the services and read the following obituary:

Friedrich J. Petersen was born July 29, 1881 in Otter Creek township to Jacob Petersen and his wife nee Anna Holst. He died after a brief illness on March 3, 1967, having reached the age of 85 years, seven months and four days.

He married Caroline Bielenberg in 1913. He is preceeded in death by his parents, one daughter Emma Marth, his wife and four sisters.

Mr Petersen farmed near Schleswig for many years. Moving to town he operated an implement business, a feed business and served as mayor of the town and also as councilman. He was a lifelong member of the congregation of the United Church of Christ.

He is survived by two grandchildren: Mrs. Walter Kortman and Mr. Norman Marth.

Mrs Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer sang, In The Garden and Just As I Am. The were accompanied on the organ by Mrs John H. Evers. The pallbearers were: Hans Jess, Raymond Bendixen, Gordon Aldag, Ralph Miller, Erwin Bendixen and Robert B. Lyon. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery.

Fred M. Jess (1917 - 1985 )

Fred M. Jess was born on June 3, 1917, near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Hans and Fredarika Stockfleth Jess. He died on Saturday morning, Jan. 5 at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 67. Fred was raised in rural Schleswig by Henry and Anna Stockfleth. He received his formal education in the rural Schleswig schools.

On July 6, 1936, he was united in marriage to Viola Boyens at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. Together they made their first home on a farm in Crawford County. In 1955 they moved to Colorado where Fred was employed as a carpenter. Returning to Iowa in 1962, they made their home in Ricketts where Fred continued his carpentry profession.

Fred was preceded in death by both his parents and his foster parents. Survivors include his wife, Viola of Ricketts; four daughters, Janice, Mrs. Dale Peterson and Mrs. Carol Kuehl, both of Sac City; Jerrie, Mrs. Glenn Wigg, and Julie, Mrs. Lowell Teut both of Schleswig. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; three brothers, Harry and Hans both of Schleswig and Harwin of Denison; one sister, Mrs. Clara Reincke of Smithland and two foster sisters, Laura Hollander of Schleswig and Clara Baker of Anaheim, Calif.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. Vicar John Laatch officiated at the services. Mrs. Loren Lee served as organist with Judy Hines as soloist. Hymns included Rock of Ages and How Great Thou Art. Serving as pallbearers were Larry Bellcock, Kim Laursen, Robert Dehner, Robin Kolpin, Raymond Jr. Boyens and David Schrader. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Mark Peterson, Randy Kuehl, Tracy Kuehl, Brandon Wigg, Brett Wigg and Jerod Petersen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Fredrick H. Pobanz (1883 - 1962 )

Fredrick Henry August Pobanz was born Feb. 19, 1883, the son of August Pobanz and his wife, Louise, in Henry county, Ill. He was baptized and confirmed at 15.

He was married to Sophia Dersein June 22, 1962(?). The union was blessed with two children, Christine and Paul. Most of his life, was spent in Crawford county, Iowa.

Those who preceded him in death were his parents and two sisters: Amelia Kruse and Minnie Pranschke. Remaining are one brother, William, and a sister, Emma Westphalen; his daughter, Christine Ehlers of South Sioux City, Neb., his son, Paul, and their families and three grandchildren.

Fredrick Pobanz died in the evening of May 31, 1962 in Crawford County hospital following a heart attack at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 12 days.

Funeral services were held June 4, 1962 at Faith Lutheran church, Deloit. Interment was made at the Lutheran cemetery, Denison. Pallbearers were Ralph Auen, Lowell Campbell, L. H. Christiansen, Leonard Ehlers, Fred Hartman and Harvey Linke.
