Gustav A. Seils (1897 - 1961)

Funeral services for Gustav A. Seils were held Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran church. Mr Seils died suddenly while working in his garden June 19 (1961). Funeral music was rendered by the choir and congregation. They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs Ray Schmidt. Rev F. A. Wiese read the following obituary:

Gustav August, son of Albert Seils and Wilhelmina Fahrnow was born in Soldier Township on the first of May 1897. As a child, he was baptized, confirmed, and attended Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township. He graduated also from their parochial school.

During the First World War, he served in the United States Army. In August 22, 1921, he was joined in marriage with Ida Goerner. They farmed four miles north and 1 ½ miles west of Ricketts. In June 1951, the couple retired to Schleswig where they made their home.

Gustav died of a heart attack on Monday, June the 19th while working in his garden. He is survived by his wife, Ida, and one son Loren of Charter Oak. Two brothers, Ernest of Carroll and Emil of Charter Oak. Four sisters: Lizzie Kroll of Ricketts, Augusta Seils of Charter Oak, Ella, wife of Louie Goberson of Mapleton and Marie, wife of Henry Klaus of Ute, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilhelmina and Bertha. He was a member of the Lutheran Church all of his life. In past years, he served nine years as a congregation trustee and over 10 years on the parochial school board. As a faithful member of Immanuel, Schleswig, he attended services regularly and had been at the morning service the day before his death.

He attained to 64 years, one month, and 18 days. Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. Pallbearers were: Martin Flanigan, Albrecht Koch, Walter Bugge, L. T. Nahnsen, P. E. Johannsen and Hugo Jensen.

Hannes H. Dersien (1908 - 1971)

Hannes Dersien died at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha on Dec. 25, 1971 at 10:30 a.m. He had been in poor health and hospitalized at the Veterans hospital in October and again after Thanksgiving until the time of his death.

Hannes H. Dersien was the son of William and Katherine Radeck Dersien. He was born Sept. 21, 1908 in Crawford County where he grew to manhood. He served in the armed forces in World War II seeing action in Europe and spent some time in the Aleutian Islands.

On Aug. 26, 1950 he was married to Lorraine Gehring and to this marriage three children were born. After their marriage they made their home in Denison. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran church.

Surviving are his widow, Lorraine, a daughter Susan of Iowa City and two sons David and Kenneth of Denison, three brothers, Carl and Fred of Dension and Henry of Detroit Lakes, Minn., three sisters, Mrs. Sophia Pobanz of Deloit, Mrs. Minnie Lorenzen, Denison and Mrs. Molly Peters of Detroit Lakes, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Edward and one sister, Lena.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church on Tuesday morning Dec. 28 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and accompanied Edmund Haase who sang two selections. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens with pallbearers being Freddie Fuller, Vertus F. Groth, Walter Kruthoff, Henry Maak, Adam Reisz and Raymond Walde.

Harold Heinrich Thomas Reincke (1889 - 1963)

Funeral services for Harold Reincke were held Tuesday, May 28, 1963, at the United Church of Christ (E&R) in Schleswig. Mrs Don Meyer and Mrs Harlan Buffum sang "Abide With Me" and "Beyond The Sunset." The organist was Mrs Broder Petersen. Rev. Walter Baumgartner read the following obituary:

Harold Heinrich Thomas Reincke was born on June 14, 1889. He was baptized in childhood and later was received into the membership of the Lutheran Church through confirmation, on April 18, 1905.

On Jan. 20, 1905, he was married to Christine Volkmann, by the Rev. W. R. Wetzeler. To this union two sons were born. Mr and Mrs Reincke lived on the farm until 1957, when they moved to the town of Schleswig.

Mr Reincke enjoyed good health until recently. On May 1 he was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City. With the best of medical care his health began to fail. He died Sunday morning at 6 o'clock at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 12 days.

Surviving are: his wife, and two sons: Clarence of Schleswig, and Ralph of Charter Oak,; one granddaughter, Joleen; one sister, Laura Hansohn of Deloit; one brother Robert, of Jamestown, N.D.; two daughters-in-law and a large number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The pallbearers were Clarence Wiese, Vernet Soenksen, Ronald Schneller, Walter Bliesman, Lavern Bjustron, and Palmer Volkman.

Harry Christensen (1907 - 1986)

Harry Christensen was born on April 15, 1907 in Monona County, Iowa the son of J.M. and Mary Christensen. He died on July 14, 1986 at the Denison Care Center at the age of 79.

Harry spent his early years on a farm in Monona County where he was born. He attended Country School in Monona County. On March 24, 1935 Harry was united in marriage to Gertrude K. Rath in Denison. After their marriage they settled on a farm South of Denison. In 1984 Harry retired from farming and later moved to Denison in 1986.

In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by two brothers: Art and Leonard Christensen.

Survivors include his wife, three children: Shirley and her husband George Jackson of Springfield, Miss., Norman and his wife Karen Christensen of Denison; Marilyn and her husband Vicar Ron Baker of Fort Wayne, Ind. Five grandchildren: Valeri Wright, Greg Christensen, Scot Christensen, Theresa Baker and Nichole Baker. Two brothers: Oscar Christensen of Vail; Lyle Christensen of Lawndale, Calif.; and three sisters: Violet Keating of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Myrtle Rath of Denison; Evelyn Hulsebus of Missouri Valley.

Funeral services were held on July 16, at 2:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Henry Henningsen as soloist.

Serving as pallbearers were Larry Ahrendsen, James L. Baumhover, Everett Miller, John Rath, Duane Hallander and Darrell Slechta. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Harry Seehusen (1891 - 1970)

Harry Seehusen, 79, Battle Creek, Iowa. Died Oct. 12 (1970), nursing home. Funeral, 11 a.m. Oct 14, St. John's Lutheran Church, the Rev. R. W. Leenerts. Burial Mt. Hope Cemetery, Christensen Funeral Home of Battle Creek.

Born July 15, 1891, Crawford County. Married Freda Ramm Aug. 26, 1914, at Battle Creek. Retired farmer.

Survivors: Widow; daughters, Mrs. Holger (Ruby) Anderson and Mrs. Walter (Betty) Vaughn of Correctionville; sons, Charles of Morongo Valley, Calif., William of Garden Grove, Calif., and Earl of Battle Creek; and 13 grandchildren.

Harvey Johann Ludwig Stier (1903 - 1966)

Funeral services for Harvey Stier were held Thursday, November 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs Ray Schmidt, organist accompanied the choir who sang "Be Still, My Soul" and the congregation who sang "Just As I Am."

Harvey Johann Ludwig Stier, son of Adolph Stier and Maria Johannsen was born in Soldier Township on January 24, 1903. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township.

He was married to Viola Cowan on February 2, 1926 by Pastor Frese at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. After their marriage, the couple farmed until 1949, when they moved to Schleswig and Harvey was employed by the county. With failing health, Harvey, two months ago gave up his working for the county. He died unexpectely at his home on Monday morning, November 14 (1966).

He is survived by his wife, Viola, two daughters, Deloris, wife of Charles Ellsworth of Sioux City and Marjorie, wife of Orville DeJong of Sioux City. He is also survived by two brothers, Herbert of Battle Creek and Alvin of Schleswig, four sisters Ella, wife of Barney Neubaum from Manning, Irma, wife of Ray Kruse of Schleswig and Carmen wife of Earl Keim of Charter Oak and Mildred, wife of Leonard Marquardt of Colorado Springs, Colorado and four grandchildren, Linda Ellsworth, Debra Douglas and Steven DeJong.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attained the age of 63 years, 9 months, and 13 days. Pallbearers were Herman Neubauer, Wayne Kuehl, Ross Jensen, Robert Johannsen, Orville Johannsen and Allen Johannsen. Interment was made in the Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig.

Helen Anita (Seivers) Disburg (1905 - 1978)

Helen Anita Seivers, daughter of Peter and Lillie Seivers, was born in Westside on Sept. 11, 1905. She graduated from Westside High School and Iowa State University in 1928. She taught Home Economics at Shelby for two years and in the Manilla School District until her retirement in 1971.

She was united in marriage with Gilbert J. Disburg on June 18, 1930, and made their home in Manilla. To this union was born three children, Paula, Alan, and Mary Ellen. Helen died at the home of her daughter, Mary Ellen in Grayson, Georgia on Nov. 21, 1978 at the age of 73 years, 2 months, and 10 days.

Helen was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, 50 year member and past Matron of Order of Eastern Star. She helped organize and was a charter member of the Federated Womans Club, a life time member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the hospital Auxiliary of Denison.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survivors are Mr. and Mrs. Hal Tuttle of Sheldon, Alan Disburg of Manilla and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Wilcox of Grayson, Geo. and by one aunt, Mrs. Alice White, as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held November 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Manilla. Officiating was Rev. Raymond Feyes. Mrs. Trudy Saunders was organist. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla. Pallbearers were Dr. J. M. Hennessey, Charles Schram, Dr. A. H. Soe, Bob Rasmussen, Ronald Rasmussen, and Newton McCracken

Henrietta Wilhelmina Caroline (Stehr) Baker (1880 - 1970)

Funeral services for Henrietta Baker were held Monday, November 23, 1970 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was organist. The congregation sang "Asleep with Jesus" and the choir sang "There is an Hour of Peaceful Rest."

Henrietta Wilhelmina Caroline Stehr, daughter of Heinrich Stehr and his wife Maria Brandenberg, was born at Center Point, Clinton County, Iowa on August 28, 1880. Henrietta came to Sac County as a child.

She was married to Albert Baker on January 15, 1899. The couple farmed east of Kiron. They moved to Schleswig into a new house which they built in 1918. In 1949, the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary.

After the death of her husband Albert, she lived approximately 15 years with the Oscar Moeller family. After a short illness she died at the Crawford County Hospital on Friday of this past week. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church for over 50 years. She celebrated her 90th birthday this past August.

Preceding her in death was her husband who died in 1955, three children, Paul who died in 1904, Elsie who died in 1960, and Hilda who died in 1964, and Oscar Moeller, her son-in-law, who died in 1969. She is survived by a sister Francis Thiede of Clinton, and the following grandchildren: Orrin Moeller, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Moeller, and three great-grandchildren, Ross, Terri, and Scott.

She attained to 90 years, two months, and 22 days. Pallbearers were: Louie Thiede, Henry Stehr, LeRoy Friedrichsen, Herbert Baker, Marvin Baker, and Clemet Thiede. Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm.

Henry Bernard Schroeder (1887 - 1965)

Henry Bernard Schroeder, the son of Julius Schroeder and his wife, Carolina nee Kastner, was born March 16, 1887 at Denison. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Denison.

He was married to Sarah Lafrentz on Oct. 4, 1911 and after their marriage they resided on farms in the Schleswig area until coming to make their home in Denison in 1945. In November 1964, he underwent surgery and since that time had been in declining health. On Nov. 9 he was taken to the local hospital where he passed away on Friday night at 10:45.

Surviving his death are his widow, Sarah, and two sisters: Mrs. Ben Hollander of Schleswig and Mrs. Bernard Evers of Des Moines. His parents, one brother and six sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 15 (1965), at the Zion Lutheran church with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Morgan Township cemetery. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist while hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies choir. The pallbearers were: Earl Andresen, Ray Bielenberg, Fred Brodersen, Ed Dozler, Walter Neumann and William Odefey.

Henry Droegmiller (1887 - abt. 1962)

Funeral services for Henry Droegmiller, 75, 2301 S. St. Aubin Street, who died Thursday after suffering a heart attack while taking a driver's license driving test, will be held Monday.

Mr. Droegmiller was asked to take the driving test before renewing his license. He was stricken at Sixth and Pierce streets while accompanied by Duane Lynch, highway patrolman, who was giving the test.

Mr. Droegmiller was born November 29, 1887, in Crawford County, Ia., and farmed in that county until retiring in 1945 when he moved to Sioux City. He was a member of the Lutheran church in Crawford County.

Survivors include two brothers, John and William, both of Sioux City, and two sisters, Miss Ida Droegmiller of Sioux City and Mrs. Clara Meddermeyer of Cherokee, Ia.

The body was taken to the W. Harry Christy funeral home in Morningside.

Craig Allen Kastner (1963 - 1967)

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 6, 1967 for Craig Allen Kastner at the United Church of Christ, Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiating. Mrs. John Evers, organist accompanied Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. Ray Martens who sang, "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "Jesus Loves Me".

Craig Allen Kastner was born on March 9, 1963 to Loren and Shirley (nee) Jurgensen in Crawford County.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Kastner, two brothers, Corey and Cal. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Kastner, and Mr. and Mrs. Edlef Jurgensen and his great-grandfather, Andresen. He attained the age of four years, one month and twenty-four days.

He died Wednesday, May 3, at the University Hospital at Iowa City, due to burns received on April 10, 1967.

Pallbearers were DeLaine Vogt, James Nemitz, Erwin Voss and Arlo Jensen. Interment was made at the Morgan Cemetery.

Clinton Louis Evers (1947 - 1974)

Funeral services were held Monday, March 25, 1974 at St. Patricks Church, Dunlap, for Clinton Louis Evers of Soldier, with Rev. Adam Reisz and Rev. Thomas Molloy officiating at the Funeral Mass. The Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier was in charge of arrangements. Burial was at the Jordan Cemetery Soldier.

Clinton L. Evers was born in Denison, Oct. 15, 1947 and died Friday, March 22, 1974 at the Burgess Memorial Hospital, Onawa at the age of 26. He was the son of Louis and Marie Keating Evers.

He spent his early years attending school in Vail, Denison and Schleswig. In moving to Soldier in 1959 he graduated from East Monona with the class of 1965.

In 1968 he married Patricia Mohlberg at Dunlap. They had two sons, Michael 4 ½ years and Matthew, 3 years old. He was employed by Swenson Farm Center and later was employed in the Soldier Valley Savings Bank.

In July, 1973, he had to terminate his duties at the bank due to his health. In October, 1973, he attended the Commission for the Blind School in DesMoines for a time. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Dunlap, and was devoted to his family, church and community.

Clarence Reincke (1916 - 1979)

Clarence Reincke was born on June 15, 1916, at Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Harold and Christina Volkman Reincke. He died on Saturday, May 26, 1979, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 62.

Clarence was raised on a family farm near Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

On February 20, 1946, Clarence was united in marriage to Alvera Quade at Schleswig. Clarence farmed near Schleswig all of his life except for the past five years. He has remained active by raising livestock. Clarence was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, his wife Alvera of Schleswig, one daughter, Jolene, Mrs. James Whiteing of Schleswig, two granddaughters, Renae and Cynthia and one brother, Ralph also of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 29, 1979, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the service. Pallbearers included Albert Gronau, Edwin Schmadeke, Palmer Peters, Virtus Hollander, Octavus Grill and Edward Marquardt.

Clarence Louis Schwenn (1914 - 1965)

Clarence Louis Schwenn, the son of William and Anna (Schmidt) Schwenn, was born Nov. 4, 1914 in Hanover township Crawford County.

He grew to manhood in Goodrich Township and on Nov. 19, 1939 was married to Malinda Hansen, a marriage to which two children were born. They lived for two years at Denison, then for three years on the farm near Schleswig, moving to their present home near Deloit in 1945. Here he lost his life due to a tractor accident on Monday afternoon, April 19 (1965).

He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Denison on April 13, 1930. At the time of his death he was a member of the voters' assembly of the congregation and also active as an officer in the Men's club of the congregation. He was active in community affairs, serving with Farm Bureau and a 4-H leader.

His funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran church on April 22 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in Memorial Gardens. The pallbearers were Virgil Bocck. Lester Bohlander, Harold Henningsen, Verne Kruse, John Newmann, and Earl Ossenkop.

He is survived by his widow, Malinda, two daughters, Mrs. Sharon Fast of Denison and Clarian Kay at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Schwenn of Denison; two sisters, Mrs. Violet Petersen of Seaside, Calif., and Mrs. Irene Stark of Westside; two brothers, Marvin and Alvin of Denison; one granddaughter, Patricia Fast of Denison.

Clarence Frederick Kortman (1911 - 1965)

Clarence Frederick Kortman, 54 was born March 21, 1911, in Charter Oak, and was taken in death June 20, 1965. He was educated in his home community of Charter Oak.

On Sept. 30, 1944, he was united in marriage to Burnita Nielson. He was a prominent citizen of the city of Charter Oak, whose influence was felt in surrounding communities as well. He was active in community and farm affairs, and was a member of the Methodist church and the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ida Kortma, and his first wife, Alice Hill Kiortman.

He is survived by his wife, three children, Mrs. Edwin Cloeter of Port Huron, Mich., John, a student at Morningside College, and Julie a student at Wayne State College; three grandchildren, Joel, John and Kurt Cloeter; and three sisters, Elsie Kortman of Charter Oak, Esther (Mrs. Harry Mortenson) of Moorhead, and Florence (Mrs. Maurice Shanghen) of Sanborn.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Charter Oak on Wednesday, June 23, at 1:30 p.m. Words of comfort by Rev. Wallace Parmer. Mary Glau organist, accompanied Mrs. Priscille Gray, soloist. Pallbearers were Lester Buenz, Laverne Freerking, Melvin Magill, Robert Butler, Robert Glau and Arnold Shmidt. Honorary pallbearers were T.C. Aarestad, Chris Hoefer, Max Nellor, R.E. Franck, Dr. Robert Huber and Earl Schelm. Interment was in the Charter Oak cemetery in Charter Oak.

Clara (Huebner) Davis (1909 - 1979)

Clara Davis was born Febr. 6, 1909 in Hanover Township, near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Emma Pautsch Huebner. She died Jan, 23, 1979 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 69.

Clara was raised on a family farm in Hanover Township. She received her formal education in St. Paul's Lutheran School. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On Oct. 21, 1930 Clara was united in marriage to Archie Davis at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. They made their home in Denison where they were in the restaurant and furniture business.

Clara was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a member of its Dorcas Society. She was also a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, one brother, Ben and one sister, Ruth.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley, Mrs. Phillip Rattenborg of Essex, and one son, James of Hoskins, Nebr. Also by five grandchildren, one great granddaughter, two brothers, Walter Huebner of Denison and Mark Huebner of Omaha, Nebr., and three sisters, Eleanora Huebner and Esther Hall both of Spirit Lake and Dorothy, Mrs. Gus Kuhlmann of Denison.

Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Walter R. Huebner, Dennis Huebner, Dale Huebner, Jeff Huebner Brian Walker, Wilbur Kuhlmann and Tom Sullivan.
Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Chriss Rasmussen (1915 - 1983)

Chriss, son of John and Anna Marie Christensen Rasmussen was born Aug. 2, 1915, near Astor, Iowa. He attended Astor country schools and was graduated from Manilla High School in 1934.

On May 28, 1941, he was united in marriage with Violet Sleister. They farmed near Manilla until 1959 when they moved to town. Chriss operated a cafe in Manilla and has been a school bus driver for 20 years.

Chriss has been in failing health for a year, and died at his home in Manilla April 17 1983, at the age of 67 years, eight months, and 15 days,

He was preceded in death by his parents, by a brother and a grandson, both in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Violet; three children, Ronald and wife Mary; John and wife Darlene and Linda, Mrs. LeRoy Palmer; 10 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Olga Christensen; all the above living in Manilla. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. April 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla. Officiating was Pastor Glenn Wiechman. Organist was Marian Jones and vocalists were Bill and Louise Ahrenholtz. Pallbearers were Keith Schwieso, Richard Schwieso, Eugene Sleister, Tom Crispen, Harold Olson and Roland Grage. Interment was in the Astor Cemetery. Prayer services were April 19 at Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla 8 p.m. Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla was in charge of arrangements.

Cecile Iona (Hulsebus) Greder (1905 - 1977)

Cecile Iona Greder, was born June 6, 1905, daughter of Albert and Paulina Gessmann, Hulsebus. She was born in Shelby County. She attended the Country school system and grew to womanhood while living with her parents on the farm.

She was united in marriage to Peter Greder in Denison on Dec. 31, 1924. Their first home was on a farm southwest of Buck Grove. To this union were born three sons and two daughters, Leslie, Roger, LaRuth, Delores and Keith.

In 1929 they moved to Buck Grove when Mr. Greder became the operator of the garage and service station. She has lived most of her life in the Buck Grove area. In 1974 she broke her hip in a fall and has been in failing health since that time. She entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital June 4, 1977 and died June 25, 1977.

She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Harold. She is survived by her husband Peter of Buck Grove and two daughters LaRuth, Mrs. John Maties of Federal Way, Wash., Delores, Mrs. Vernon Hast of Denison, three sons, Roger of Buck Grove, Leslie of Bridgevica, Ill., and Keith of Denison, her mother at the Denison Care Center, 11 grandchildren and one sister, Bertha, Mrs. William Hast of Tulsa Okl., other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held June 27, at 2 p.m. at Maxwell Funeral Home with Rev. J. Elmer Brunk officiating. Henry Henningsen was soloist and Dorothy Norman, Organist. Pallbearers were John Ryan, Vernon Greder, Stanley Dieber, Sylvester Greder, Terry Dieber and Russell Greder. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery.

Carol Grace (Ernst) Schmadeke (1929 - 1964)

Funeral services for Mrs. Louis Schmadeke were held Thursday morning, September 3, 1964, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Rev. C. Pannier officiating. Music was by Julie Meseck, organist; hymns were "Near My God to Thee" and "Asleep in Jesus" sung by the choir.

Mrs. Schmadeke, nee Carol Grace Ernst, was born in Crawford County, Iowa, to Theodore and Hilda nee Jurgensen Ernst on June 6, 1929. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in April 1943. She received her elementary and High School training in Schleswig and graduated from High School in 1947.

On August 22, 1948, she was united in wedlock to Louis Schmadeke. They made their home on a farm 6 miles northwest of Schleswig. To this union were born 5 children: Colleen, Harland, Keith, Jill and Timothy all living at home.

After being ill about a year and half and being hospitalized at Luther Hospital, Sioux City, several times, she entered Denison Hospital June 17 of this year, where she passed away on August 31 from Cancer.For many years she taught Sunday School and was also active as a member and officer of St. Paul's Lutheran Ladies Aid.

In addition to her husband and children she is survived by her parent, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Ernst of Schleswig; two brothers, Vernon and Merle of Schleswig and two sisters, Phyllis (Mrs. John Gosch) of Denison and Audrey (Mrs. James Munsen) of Cherokee, her parents-in-law, r. and Mrs. August Schmadeke of Schleswig, many relatives and a host of friends and acquaintances.

Pallbearers were Andrew Clausen Jr, J.W. Iversen, Vernon Stockfleth, Delphin Bruhn, Kenneth Winsor and Edwin Bohlman. Interment was in Hanover Cemetery.

Edlef C. Grell (1906 - 1972)

Edlef C. Grell, son of Carl Grell and Caroline Jurgensen, was born Oct. 5, 1906 near Schleswig. He grew up in that community. He was fire chief of Ricketts, farmed and also ran a grocery store in Ricketts. For some years he worked for Crawford county as a grader and bulldozer operator.

He was married to Bernice Eyer on June 27, 1928 at Immanuel Lutheran church in Soldier Township. He was one of the founders of St. Luke's and served on the church council and also was financial secretary of the congregation.

He died at the Denison hospital on Feb. 5, 1972.

He is survived by his wife Bernice, his mother Mrs. Caroline Grell, one brother, Albert, all of Ricketts, and a sister, Mrs. Mina Moeller of LeHambra, Calif. He attained the age of 65 years and four months.

Funeral services were held at St. Luke's Lutheran church in Ricketts on Feb 8, with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Alvin Eyer, LaVerne Eyer, Ernie Grell, Arnold Grell, John Grell and Gerald Eyer.

Edith (Hein) Rank (1914 - 1971)

Mrs. Virgil Rank, 57, Denison, died Nov. 18 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of John Major and Alice Major Hein. Edith was born May 15, 1914 in Shelby County, Ia. She attended the Shelby county schools and later graduated from the Dunlap high school in 1931, she taught school for several years.

On Jan. 25, 1936 she was married to Virgil Rank and to this union three children were born, Shirley, Mrs. Norman Rossow of Audubon, John of Charter Oak, and Donald, who died in infancy.

Mrs. Rank had lived in the Soldier, Battle Creek and Denison areas. She was a member of the Schleswig Immanuel Lutheran church and belonged to the Ladies Aid, serving as their secretary for two years.

She leaves to mourn her passing, husband Virgil, daughter Shirley, son John and five grandchildren, her step-father, Charles Hein, and one sister Vera, Mrs. Elmo Evans, a brother Lawrence Major of Dunlap.

Funeral services were held Nov. 29, 1971, at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Schleswig with Rev. F. A. Wese, officiating. Organist Mrs. Ray Schmidt, vocalists, Mrs. Delphin Bruhn, Mrs. Lawrence Schultz, Terri Christiansen and Mrs. Ted Hollander. Interment was in the Dunlap cemetery at Dunlap with pallbearers being Milroy Henningsen, Wesley Husted, Art Olson, Marvine Petersen, Harlow Wingate and Virgil Winquist. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Edgar H. Else (1904 - 1985)

Edgar H. Else was born on August 2, 1904 in Crawford county, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Minnie Rissen Else. He died on Monday morning, March 25, 1985, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 80.

Edgar spent his early years in Crawford County. He received his formal education in rural schools and the Schleswig High School.

On February 26, 1930, Edgar was united in marriage to the former Frieda Clausen at the Frieden's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. Together they farmed in the Schleswig area for seventeen years. During this time, Edgar served as Clerk of Morgan Township.

In 1947, they moved to Schleswig where Edgar was employed as a carpenter. After retirement in 1970, he served as custodian of the United Church of Christ for twelve years. Edgar was a life-long member of the United Church of Christ. He served on the Spiritual Council, the Church Council, and as a member of the Church Brotherhood.

Preceding Edgar in death were his parents. Survivors include his wife, Frieda of Schleswig, one daughter, Delores, Mrs. Milford Schulz of Schleswig, three grandchildren, Sherry Horning and her husband Phil of Fremont, California, Brad Schultz and wife, Judy, of Charter Oak, and Sheila Schultz of Independence, Missouri, and two great-grandchildren, Kyle Schultz and Amanda Hornung. Also surviving are two brothers, Arthur Else of Long Beach, California, and George Else of Schleswig, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 28, 1985, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Mrs. Evelyn Johnson served as organist with Mrs. Ruble Kastner as soloist. Burial was in Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Pallbearers were Delmer Clausen, Delbert Clausen, Larry Clausen, Lowell Teut, Larry Beeck and Edward Neddermeyer.

Eddie John Adolph Eggert (1913 - 1967)

Eddie John Adolph Eggert, son of Johannes Eggert and Christine (Hildebrandt) Eggert was born Oct. 2, 1913 in Hanover Township and died at his home early Friday morning at 12:45. He had returned home from the local hospital on the Wednesday before his sudden death.

He was married to Lydia Maack on Jan. 10, 1937 and to this marriage one daughter was born. They had lived on the present farm since the time of their marriage. Baptized in infancy he later affiliated with the Lutheran Church in Denison by the rite of confirmation.

His funeral service was held at Zion Lutheran Church on April 17 (1967) with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist and hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens with the following serving as pallbearers: Earl Hiller, Ronald Maack, Carl Schreiber, James Holstein, Arlo Schoenfeld and James Watke

Surviving are his widow Lydia; one daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Nemitz and son in law James Nemitz, two brothers, Henry and Harold; three grandchildren; his father, Johannes Eggert of Denison.

Preceeding him in death were his mother, Mrs. Johannes Eggert and one sister, Irene Eggert.

Douglas Lyn Roecker (1956 - 1978)

Douglas Lyn Roecker, 22, Ida Grove, died Sunday, October 15, 1978, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident south of Ida Grove.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 1978, at the Christensen Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. Clifford Isaacson of the United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Mr. Roecker was born July 11, 1956, in Ida Grove. He was raised in Schleswig where he graduated with the class of 1974 from Schleswig High School. He was employed by Gene Pick Construction Co. in Ida Grove.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Jim Krueger of Battle Creek; his father Marvin Roecker of Denison; two sisters, Gwen of Omaha and Patricia of Battle Creek; a brother, Bruce of Battle Creek; a half-sister Katherine Krueger of Battle Creek; his grandmother, Mrs. Lavina Roecker of Schleswig; his stepfather, Jim Krueger of battle Creek, and a step-grandmother, Faye Krueger of Sioux City.

Donald O. Itse (1926 - 1982)

Donald O., son of Reverend A. C. and Britha C. Itse, was born Aug. 6, 1926, at Denison. He lived with his parents in Irwin and graduated from Irwin High School in 1943. He attended the University of Minnesota for a short period before entering the United States Navy for the duration of World War II. After the war was over, he attended the University of Iowa where he received his bachelor of fine arts degree. He then rejoined the United States Navy during the Korean conflict.

Donald was married and had two sons, Daniel and Karl. He lived and worked in California, and near Boston, Mass., before moving to Arlington, Tex., where he made his home at the time of his death.

Donald had been ailing for only a few months and died unexpectedly on July 15, 1982, at Arlington Memorial Hospital, Arlington, Tex., at the age of 55 years, 11 months and 9 days.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. A.C. Itse in 1961. He is survived by his two sons, Daniel and Karl Itse, of near Boston, Mass. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. A.C. Itse.

Funeral services were held July 19, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Irwin. Officiating was Pastor Timothy Zingale. Organist was Mrs. Alan Larson. Interment with military honors at Danway Cemetery, Shelby County. Pallbearers were Richard Larson, Alan Thompson, Alvin Bandow, Orlando Hansen, Donald Wickersham and Merlene Brue. Ohde Funeral Home, Manilla, in charge of arrangements.

Delphin Bruhn (1931 - 1972)

Funeral services for Delphin Bruhn, 40, were held on Saturday morning, January 8, 1972, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with the Rev. F.A. Wiese officiating. Organist was Mrs. Ray Schmidt. The congregation sang "Rock of Ages" and the choir sang "There Is An Hour of Peaceful Rest".

Delphin Dean Bruhn, son of Ray Bruhn and his wife Alice (Abbe) Bruhn, was born in Ida County on December 18, 1931. He was baptized by Pastor C. W. Schmidt at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township and confirmed by Pastor Pauling at St. Paul, Ida Grove. He attended school at Ida Grove and graduated from the Schleswig High School.

On May 20, 1951, he was married to Marilyn Christiansen by Pastor Wiese. After his marriage, he farmed for a number of years, and for the past three years had his own trucking business. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig for the past 25 years.

He was taken to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Wednesday afternoon, January 5, 1972, and died there early on Thursday, January 6. He attained to 40 years and 18 days.

Survivors are: his wife Marilyn, three children, Reggie in the Navy, Randy and Sandra, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bruhn, one brother Dennis and one sister Nancy, wife of Corvin Teut, all of Schleswig, and his maternal grandmother Hertha Abbe of Danbury.

Pallbearers were: Ronald Teut, Gerald Meeves, Roger Schneider, Freddie Backhaus, Norman Friedrichsen and Robert Bennigsdorf. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens.

Dennis Robert Schau (1941 - 1965)

Charter Oak - Dennis Robert Schau, the oldest son of Herbert and Hilda Reimers Schau was born March 14, 1941 in Schleswig and was baptized by Pastor C. F. Schwidder of Immanuel Lutheran church in Schleswig on April 20, 1941.

He has made his home in Charter Oak since 1952. He was confirmed on March 25, 1956 in St. Johns Lutheran church by Pastor W. P. Schroeder. He attended the Lutheran school through grades five to eight. Since his graduation from Charter Oak high school in 1960 he was employed at Mobil station in Charter Oak, Denison Auto and at present at Farmbest Packing Company in Denison. He joined the National Guard in October, 1961.

He died May 14, 1965 as the result of an automobile accident having attained the age of 24 years, two months and one day.

Surviving are his parents, and five brothers, Kenneth, Merlin, Dewayne, Ronald and Guy.

Funeral services were held May 17 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church in Charter Oak with Rev. O. Schlegelmilch officiating. Pallbearers were Howard, Allen, Edward and Irvin Schau, David Ehlers and Les Campbell. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran cemetery in Charter Oak with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Donald D. Carstensen (1930 - 1987)

Donald D. Carstensen of Gresham, Ore. Died Sept 29. Carstensen was born the son of Peter Carstensen and Edna Asmus Carstensen at Denison on Sept 6, 1930. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Denison.

In his early years he made his home with his uncle and aunt, Henry and Cecelia Olderog of rural Vail, where he attended a rural school and later graduated from Denison High School.

He was married on Oct. 12, 1977 in Vancouver, Wash., and he and his wife moved to Gresham. In recent years he was in the real estate business and also worked for the Port of Portland.

He is survived by his wife Lavonne Carstensen of Gresham, Celeste Carstensen of Gresham, Grant Carstensen of Korea and Julie Carstensen Davis of Omaha, Neb.; his mother, Edna Wolfe of Denison; his uncle, Henry Olderog of Denison; his sister, Donna Kroll of Denison and a half-brother, Willis Carstensen of Denison.

He was preceded in death by his father Peter Carstensen and his aunt, Cecelia Olderog.

He died at Gresham, Sept. 29, 1987, of heart failure at the age of 57 years and 23 days.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Christian funeral services were held at the Bateman Funeral Chapel at Gresham on Oct. 2, with burial in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Hans Behrmann (1892 - 1965)

Hans Behrmann, 72, veteran Schleswig business man died at his home early Monday morning, April 12 (1965) after suffering from a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from the United Church of Christ. Mrs Ernie Grell and Mrs Don Meyer sang, "Abide with Me," and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus." They were accompanied by Mrs John H. Evers on the organ. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated.

Mr Behrmann was born in Hamburg, Stellingen, Germany on September 26, 1892. He came to the United States in 1910. He was employed by August Rickert in the general merchandise store for two years and then went to Manning where he worked in the Martens Merchandise company. Returning to Schleswig in 1915, he again went to work for Mr Rickert. He also worked for Peter C. Hollander in the clothing store. In February of 1919 with his father-in-law, Honas Lorenzen, they purchased the merchandise business from August Rickert and renamed it Behrmann and Company.

In 1959 on the 40th anniversary of Behrmann and Co., Hans sold the store to his son, Byron who had been associated with him for several years.

He married Emma Lorenzen on May 8, 1917. they have two children, Lois, Mrs Lorenz Ipsen of Des Moines and Byron. A nephew, Bill Meyerink made his home with them afer the death of his mother, until he went into the service in World War II. Besides his widow and two children he is survived by a brother, Arthur in Germany.

During his forty years in business in Schleswig he served on [?]ll civic organizations, the community club, volunteer fire department and council. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. The pallbearers were: George Schiernbeck, Leonard Hollander, Arthur Hollander, Charles Evers, Robert B. Lyon and John H. Evers. Honorary pallbearers were: A. G. Schultz, G. P. Hollander, J. A. Rohwer, H. F. Peters, L. D. Johns and Johannes Gosch.

Hans Boeck (1894 - 1966)

Funeral services for Hans Boeck were held Friday, Jan 21, at 10:30 a. m. at the Zion Lutheran church with the Rev. C. W. Schmidt officiating. Music was provided by the Lutheran Ladies' choir, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Rabe.

Pallbearers were Alfred Gluesing, Louie Heeren, John Jurgensen, Bernie Petersen, Pete Petersen and William Plagge. Interment was in the Morgan Townsip cemetery near Schleswig.

The son of Henry and Dorothy (Schneckloth) Boeck, he was born Sept. 25, 1894, in Bollingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany. In 1924 he came to America, making his home with the Martin Hansen family near Denison. For years he followed the profession of stone mason. Upon retirement, he lived in the William Plagge home. He died Jan. 19 (1966) at the Denison hospital.

Survivors include two cousins, Mrs. Minnie Voss and Carl Boeck, and a niece, Mrs. Clarence Mohr, all of Denison.

Helen (Paulsen) Ernst (1888 - 1971)

Funeral services were held Monday, November 22, 1971, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig for Mrs. Helen Ernst. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated. Becky Ratzlaff was the organist. Mrs. Ernie Grell and Mrs. G. M. Johnson sang "Nearer, My God, To Thee" and "Beyond The Sunset".

Helen Ernst was born to Peter Paulsen and his wife, Catherine Paarmann in Crawford County on February 21, 1888.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Church and in 1911 married Rudolph Ernst. They farmed in the Schleswig area until Mr. Ernst passed away in 1949. Mrs. Ernst then moved to town. She was a member of the Women's Guild and a longtime member of this congregation.

Mrs. Ernst passed away after a lingering illness on Saturday, November 20, 1971, having reached the age of 83 years, 8 monhts, 29 days.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, and one daughter-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter Garnett, Mrs. Louis Bruhn of Charter Oak, and one son Milroy of Schleswig; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Fred Schnoor, Clarence Mohr, Peter Paulsen, Allan Jorgensen, Martin Wodtke and Merlin Overhue. Interment was in Morgan cemetery.

Henry Fred Eggert (1915 - 1976)

Henry Fred Eggert of Denison, son of Johannes and Christina Hildebrandt Eggert, was born in Hanover Township Sept. 6, 1915, and died suddenly at his home, Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1976, at the age of 60 years and [?] months.

Mr. Eggert was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Denison and attended rural school in Hanover Township.

On Jan. 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ida Petersen at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They settled on a farm near Kenwood. In 1944 they moved to a farm in Paradise Township, where they lived at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his mother, one grandson, one brother, Eddie, and one sister, Irene.

Survivors include his wife, Ida, two daughters Corliss (Mrs. James Long) of Lincoln, Nebr., and Nancy (Mrs. Larry Gessmann) of Harlan, two grandchildren, his father, Johannes, one brother, Harold of Denison, a[?]other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00a.m. Friday, January 9, at the Zion Lutheran Church with Reverend Robert Maschke officiating. Pallbarers [sic] were Erwin Moeller, Ralph Evers, Loren Kastner, Edlef Jurgensen, Paul Paine, and William Peters, Jr. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Garden with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Henry Janssen (1895 - 1965)

Henry Janssen passed away on Jan. 6 (1965). He was born on April 25, 1895 in Westerstede, the son of Henry Janssen and his wife Anna Marie nee Kramer. At the age of five he came to America with his parents, living in Crawford County.

Here he was married to Emma Bauer on June 18, 1919 and to this marriage three children were born. They resided on farms in the Buck Grove Community until retiring to make their home in Denison in 1962 where Mr. Janssen resided until his sudden death.

Mr. Janssen was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Denison. For many years he was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Buck Grove where he served on the church Council a number of years. At the time of his death he was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where his funeral service was held on Jan. 9 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mr. Fred Greinke served as organist and the Lutheran Ladies Choir sang. Interment was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Garden with the following serving as pallbearers: Fred Beerman, Meinhardt Block, Emil Brune, Emil Burmeister, Alfred Carstens and Herman Hast.

Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Arlene Block of Denison, Mrs. Vera Stover of Buck Grove and one son, Vernon Janssen of Buck Grove; nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers John of Denison and Fritz of Canon City, Colo., and one sister, Anna Reuwsaat of Denison. One brother, William, and one sister, Lena, preceded him in death.

Henry John Jaacks (1905 - 1963)

Henry John Jaacks, son of Emil and Rosa (Hildebrandt) Jaacks, was born Dec. 10, 1905 in Goodrich township, Crawford county.

He was married to Adeline Petersen on Jan. 22, 1930, a marriage to which two children were born. After their marriage they farmed in Hanover township, then for the past 22 years in Goodrich township. Mr. Jaacks died at his home on Oct. 26 (1963).

In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Zion Lutheran church in Denison. Here his funeral service was held on Oct. 29 with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating.

Interment was made in the Oakland cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Willis Jaacks, Amos Petersen, Delano Petersen, Minard Petersen, Reynold Petersen and Harold Sievers.

He is survived by his widow, Adeline; by his mother, Mrs. Rosa Jaacks; by one son and daughter-in-law, Burdell and Virginia Jaacks, of Riverside, Calif.; by one daughter, Mrs. Janice Davis of Boulder, Colo.; by three grandsons. Also surviving are one brother, Walter Jaacks of Denison and one sister, Mrs. Sophie Schroeder of Denison. His father preceded him in death.

Mr. Jaacks was an active member of the Zion Lutheran church having served as trustee and member of the stewardship committee.

Henry Kahler (1887 - 1966)

Funeral services for Henry Kahler were held Tuesday, July 12 at the Sinn Funeral Home, Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Paul Hillmann officiating. Mrs John Evers was the organist accompanying a duet by Mrs Ray Martens and Mrs Ernie Grell. The Hymns were "Just as I Am" and "What a Friends [sic] We Have in Jesus."

Henry Kahler was born January 15, 1887 in Morgan township, Crawford County, Iowa. In 1914, with his parents, he moved to Otter Creek township, 3/4 mile north of Schleswig, Iowa, where he and his brother William farmed in partnership for 50 years.

In the fall of 1961 he suffered a stroke and his health began to fail. In 1964 he moved to Denison Iowa and made his home with his brother William and wife until two months ago when he entered the Eventide Rest Home in Denison. He passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison Saturday, July 9th (1966).

While Henry Kahler's primary interest was farming he was also strongly interested in horses. Along with the farming he and his brother William were in the saddlery and riding equipment business for ten years. He was a member of the Crawford County Saddlery Club for many years.

Survivors include one brother, William of Denison, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. Ella Peterson of Patton, Iowa, one niece, Mrs Helen Williams of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr and Mrs Andrew Kahler and one sister, Lena.

The pallbearers were Elmer Bohlmann, John H. Moeller, L. P. Hollander, H. C. Dahms, Edward Schmadeke and Howard Qualheim. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Henry Ludwig Reichert (1917 - 1979)

Henry Ludwig Reichert was born on January 18, 1917 at Siegelback, Germany, the son of Karl and Bertha Reichert. He died on Thursday morning, August 16, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa.

Henry came to the United States with his father at the age of 9. They made their home on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Henry attended the rural schools near his home. He was baptized in Germany and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church.

Henry served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. Upon his release from the military he returned to Crawford County and farmed near his family home place.

On February 18, 1961 he was united in marriage to Anna Marie Hinricksen at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home on the farm until November of 1977 when they moved to Denison. Henry worked for farmers in the area until he retired due to ill health.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Emma. Survivors include his wife Anna Marie of Denison, one step-son Lee and his wife Joan Jors of Waukesha, Wisconsin, one step-daughter, Joleen Jors of Kansas City, Missouri and one grandson John Henry. Also by one brother, Karl Reichert of Denison and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 18, 1979 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included: Terry Weltz, Alan Weltz, Robert Boehm, Roger Boehm, Keith Freese and Dale Darstensen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Henry Joachim Preuss (1894 - 1976)

Henry Joachim Preuss, son of Johannes and Alvine Raun Preuss, was born January 1, 1894, in Denison, Iowa. He attended the rural public schools of Crawford County.

Henry was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Anna Marie Berndt May 16, 1917, at Poplar Grove, Illinois. They settled on a farm northwest of Denison, where they were engaged in farming. Their marriage was blest [sic] with three children: William, Henrietta and Kenneth. He was a confirmed member of the Schleswig United Church of Christ.

Mr. Preuss passed away at St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, August 19, 1976, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 18 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilhelmina; and his son, Kenneth.

Survivors include his son, William of Denison, Iowa; his daughter, Henrietta (Mrs. John Reimers) of Charter Oak, Iowa; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

The Memorial Service for Henry Preuss was held at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig on Monday, August 23, 1976, with Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Music was provided by Malinda Evers, Jeanette Grell, and Evelyn Johnson with songs of praise, "My Faith Looks up To Thee" and "I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say". The burial service was in Morgan Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Edward Sonnichsen, Vernet Soenksen, Allen Reimers, Freddie Jepsen, Edmund Petersen and Roger Harm.

Henry Prussing (1901 - 1978)

Henry Prussing was born on February 18, 1901 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Jurgen and Ida Prussing. He died on March 29, 1978, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 77.

Henry was raised and educated in the rural schools near Schleswig, Iowa. Two years of his education were spent at the parochial at Grant Township. He was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On October 16, 1929, Henry was united in marriage to Marie Kollbaum at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Together they made their home on the Prussing home place. Henry retired and moved to Denison in 1968 after living on the farm for sixty-five years of his life.

In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by one sister Martha. Survivors include his wife Marie of Denison, and one son Wilbert of Charter Oak, Iowa. Also by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 1, 1978, at 3:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Victor O. Hoyer officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Francis Krohnke, Dale Hinkel, Freddie Backhaus, William Luth, Les Reincke and John Bahnsen.

Anna Wilhelmina (Reuss) Carstensen (1914 - 1978)

Anna Wilhelmina Reuss, daughter of Henry and Maria Kroeger Reuss, was born in Woodbury County, Sept. 4, 1914. She moved with her parents to the Kiron area as a small child. Her education was in the Kiron school system and graduated from the Kiron High School.

She was employed by several families in the Kiron and Deloit areas and on April 17, 1935 she was united in marriage to Julius Carstensen. They made their home in Deloit for a time and then moved to the farm home that was home for the last 32 years. After a very short illness she died April 18, 1978 at the age of 63 years, 7 months and 14 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Joan and one son Johnny, three sisters and two grandsons.

Survivors are her children, Clarence of Boise, Ida.; Raymond of Vista, Calif.; Norman of Ida Grove; Bonita, Mrs. Tom Fineran of St. Anthony, Ida.; Jerry of Boise, Ida.; Audrey, Mrs. Douglas Broome of Monroe, N.C.; twins Dennis and Dean of Boise, Ida.; and Patricia, Mrs. Dennis Plagge of Denison; twenty-five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. Three sisters, Florence, Mrs. James Wangler of Kiron; Emmeline, Mrs. Melvin Gustafson of Kiron and Luella, Mrs. Benny Dixon of Columbia, Mo., other relatives and friends.

She had been baptized and confirmed in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township.

Funeral services were held April 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Maxwell Funeral Home with Rev. E.E. Greene officiating. Dorothy Norman was organist. Mrs. Connie Zenk was soloist. Pallbearers were Raymond Riessen, Clark Martens, Arden Amman, Alvin Schwenn, Donald Lutz and Harold Henningsen. Interment was in the Deloit Cemetery.

Arthur F. Gluesing (1902 - 1975)

Arthur F. Gluesing, Ute, son of Reimer and Sophia Grill Gluesing, was born in Hanover Township, Crawford County, April 23, 1902, and died at his home in Ute on Nov. 6, 1975, at the age of 73 years, 6 months, and 14 days. Mr. Gluesing attended rural school in Hanover Township.

On Aug. 17, 1927, he was united in marriage to Lulu Vogt of Paradise Township. They settled on a farm in the Ute area. Two children were born to this union. Mr. Gluesing continued farming until 1972 when he retired and moved to town.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Betty Ann Yelsma, a brother, Alfred, and a sister, Martha.

Survivors include his wife, Lulu, a son, Wayne of Williston, N. Dakota, seven grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Leona Grill of Denison, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, with Reverend Robert Leege officiating. Pallbearers were Johannes Petersen, Herbert Mordhorst, Roy Gran, Ernest Klaus, Ervin Knutzen and John E. Gosch. Interment was made in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, with Huebner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Bertha (Ochs) Gottburg (1909 - abt. 1970)

Funeral services for Mrs. John F. Gottburg, 61, 920 Virginia Street were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Nelson-Berger Northside Funeral Home, in Sioux City. The Rev. Curtis H. Lindahl, pastor of the Mayflower Congregational Church officiated. The body was taken to Omaha for cremation. Mrs. Gottburg died Friday at the hospital.

The former Bertha A. Ochs, Mrs. Gottburg was born May 30, 1909, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She moved to Schleswig, Iowa in 1930. She was married December 30, 1930, at Schleswig. The couple moved from Schleswig to Sioux City in 1950. Mrs. Gottburg was employed by Younker-Martin's Department Store until five years ago.

Survivors include the widower; a son, Richard of Sioux City; two brothers, Erven of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Warren of Allentown, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Dimler and Mrs. Mary Stechel, both of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and three grandchildren.

Betty Marcella (Mesenbrink) Whited (1921 - 1969)

Betty Marcella Whited, daughter of John and Alice Mesenbrink was born February 1, 1921 in Denison. In early childhood she was baptized and later confirmed in the Friedens Evangelical Church at Schleswig. In 1953 she united with the Zion Lutheran Church at Denison where she was active in the Ladies Aid.

She had been in ill health for the past two years and hospitalized at various times. She was taken to the local hospital on May 19 and died there on June 18 (1969).

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church on June 20 with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Hymns were sung by the Lutheran Ladies Choir with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Interment was made in the Morgan Township cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Robert Heckmann, Leon Klotz, Roger Rusch, Bruce Whited, Craig Whited, and Dennis Whited.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Dethlefsen of Arion, three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Ruser of Schleswig and Joann and Phyllis of Denison, three grandchildren, her father and mother, two brothers, John and Roy of Denison; two sisters, Mrs. Hertha Klotz of Quimby and Mrs. Gladys Rusch of Schleswig; nine half-brothers and half-sisters; five stepchildren and ten step-grandchildren.

Carl Bielenberg (1908 - 1968)

Funeral services for Carl Bielenberg were held Friday, November 29, 1968 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Mrs. Roy Schmidt was the organist. The congregation sang "In the Cross of Christ I Glory" and the choir sang "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me."

Carl Bielenberg, son of Claudius Bielenberg and Marie nee Jahde was born in Otter Creek Township on October 30, 1908. He lived all of his life in this community, farming until about three years ago when he lived in semi retirement in Schleswig. He was married to Alice Miller in January 1931. His wife died in October 1944.

After religious instruction, he was baptized December 31st, 1967 in the Lutheran Church. He died early Tuesday morning at Crawford County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He is survived by his four children: Betty, wife of Harold Engesser of Tracy, Minn.; Arlis, wife of Wayne Schultz of Schleswig; Marlene, wife of Roger Baer from Schleswig; Dale of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Herbert Miller of Schleswig, and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother Herman. He attained to 60 years, and 26 days.

Pallbearers were Wayne Miller, Melvin Miller, Larry Miller, Glen Hofmeyer, Clarence Jahde, and Loren Bielenberg. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Carl Emil Petersen (1919 - 2006)

Carl Emil Petersen was born August 1, 1919, the son of Amos Ludwig and Bertha Zage Petersen. He died Sunday, October 29, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-seven.

Carl was born and raised on a farm near Denison, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ, September 28, 1919 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and later confirmed there on March 25, 1934. He received his education in a rural school near his home and Zion Lutheran School. At age twenty-two, Carl entered the United States Army on August 19, 1941, serving as a driver with the 803rd Field Artillery, stationed in the Philippines. He received his honorable discharge on January 16, 1946, having been decorated with the American Defense Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He returned to Crawford County and began working for various farmers.

On February 16, 1947, Carl was united in marriage to Gladys Weller at Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. The couple made their home on the family acreage on the west end of Westside, where Carl worked for his uncle for one year before moving to a farm near Guthrie Center, later moving to the Babbe family farm near Deloit. In 1961 they moved to a farm near Schleswig, where they farmed until retiring in 1986 and moving to Schleswig.

Carl was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and a sixty year member of the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W., where he was a member of the Color Guard and carried the American Flag. His life was devoted to farming and raising his family. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, the great outdoors and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Jurgen, John, Edward and Lorenz Petersen and two sisters, Minnie Babbe and Adeline Jaacks.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Schleswig; six children, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Carlene Huerta and her husband, Larry of Fox River Grove, Illinois; Carole Wynn and her husband, Vernon of Salix and their children, Andy Speng and his wife, Lilli and their children, Chelsea and Jacob of Sergeant Bluff; Carm Speng of Des Moines; Julie Malm and her husband, Scott and their daughter, Sara of Moville; and Kelli Wynn of Salix; Jean Stuckey and her husband, Ed of Fort Payne, Alabama, and their children, Megan Snyder and her husband, James of St. Marys, Georgia; Jeff Stuckey of Fort Payne, Alabama; Wayne Petersen of Livermore and his son, Derrick Petersen of Livermore; Willis Petersen of Schleswig and his children, Melanie Hagens and her husband, Mike of Schleswig, Mathew Petersen of Mapleton and Mindi Ohlmeier and her husband, Shawn and their son, Tyler of Mapleton; and Wesley Petersen and his wife, Lisa of Lawton and their children, Bradley Petersen and Lynne Petersen of Lawton; one sister-in-law, Elnora Petersen of Schleswig; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Reverend Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave site rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Nearer, My God, to Thee," "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me," and "Lift High the Cross." V.F.W. Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig acted as pallbearers and provided military honors. The family invited everyone to join them at the church for lunch which was served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Family Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Clara Elizabeth (Zobel) Carlson (1918 - 2004)

Clara Elizabeth Carlson was born on December 28, 1918 the daughter of Oswald and Anna Wiegel Zobel. She died on Friday, February 13, 2004 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-five.

Clara was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home and was baptized in Christ in Charter Oak on January 2, 1919 and was later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township on January 28, 1934.

On February 11, 1937, Clara was united in marriage to Charles Leslie Carlson in the Lutheran Parsonage in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm south of Charter Oak and was blessed with the birth of two sons.

After retiring from the farm in 1960, the couple moved to Ricketts where Clara began working at the Ricketts telephone office. Later she was the custodian at the Farmers State Bank in Ricketts. In the early 1970's and into the mid 1980's they owned and operated the Pop Inn, a restaurant and tavern in town. She moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in 1995.

Clara was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, the Ladies Aid and the Rick-Ettes. Due to her many years of community involvement and acts of kindness to others, she received a Leadership Award from her home town of Rickets in 1998.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles in 1994, one daughter-in-law, Margaret Carlson, one sister Marie Maas, and two grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Lloyd Carlson and his wife, Elaine of Ricketts; Larry Carlson and his wife, Donna of Hills, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, sixteen step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild; one sister, Erna Green of South Sioux City, Nebraska; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 16, 2004 at the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ricketts, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "Beautiful Savior" and "Abide With Me! Fast Falls the Eventide." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Wayne Kuhlmann, Steve Claussen, Vernon Bielow, Kenneth Baak, Paul Schwarz and Eric Carlson. The pallbearers were: Lloyd Carlson, Jr., Dennis Carlson, Logan Carlson, Mark Carlson, Mike Angle and Eric Wold. Clara (Clausen) Teut (1916 - 2004)

Clara Teut was born March 23, 1916 the daughter of Daniel and Emma Mohr Clausen. She died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-eight.

Clara was born near Ute, Iowa and received her education in rural schools near her home. She was baptized in Christ, May 28, 1916 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and later confirmed there on February 28, 1932.

On November 25, 1937, Clara was united in marriage to Melvin Teut at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm west of Schleswig for four years, then moved to a farm east of Schleswig. In 1970, they retired and moved to Schleswig, where Clara worked at the Schleswig Sausage Plant for ten years.

Clara was a devoted member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, their Quilters and Ladies Aid. She was also a member of several card clubs. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin in 1990, one daughter, Joy Dean Baak and one sister, Helen Mason and her husband, Howard. Also preceding her in death were brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, August Waderich, Ralph Teut, Arlo Teut, Kermit Teut, Herbert Teut, Edna and Marcus Wodtke, Waldo Teut, Orville Teut, Raymond and Dorothy Teut and Erna Nihsen.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Beeck and her husband, Robert of Schleswig; Marti Lenz of Omaha; five grandchildren, Trevis Beeck and his wife, Laura; Paige Beeck; Justin Beeck and his wife, Dayna; Bradley Lenz; Jodi Strasser and her husband, Chris; and seven great-grandchildren, Alexa and Destry Beeck; Taelor Beeck, Tyler and Abigail Beeck; Danielle and Carissa Strasser; also several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ruby Waderich of Mapleton; Everett Teut and his wife, Betty of Omaha; Ruth Teut of Ute; Christine Teut of Schleswig; Irene Teut of Denison; Arlene Teut of Mapleton; and Gilbert Nihsen; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2004 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Clarence August William Miller (1914 - 1980)

Clarence August William Miller was born on July 16, 1914 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Ia., the son of Louie and Emma Kahl Miller. He died late Friday evening, Dec. 26, 1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Ia. at the age of 66.

Clarence moved to Denison at an early age from the farm with his family. He was baptized as an infant in Hanover Township and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Clarence graduated from the Denison High School in 1934.

He was united in marriage on July 4, 1937 to Eleanore Schramm at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home in Denison where they later owned and operated the U & I Cafe for many years. Presently, Clarence was employed with the Crawford County Sheriff's office and served as the courts bailiff. Clarence was long time member of Zion Lutheran Church, a member of the Columbia Society, the Optimists and a volunteer fireman.

In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by one son Terry in 1978, one brother and one brother and one sister in infancy.

Survivors include his wife Eleanore of Denison, one son Mark of Cedar Falls and three daughters, Elaine, Mrs. James Brink of Hardy, Ark., Barbara, Mrs. John Brockelsby of Eatontown, N.J. and Marilyn, Mrs. Scott Young of Dysart, Ia. Also by seven grandchildren and one sister, Delores, Mrs. Earl Hiller of Ute.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1980 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Roland Borgstahl, Carl Meyer, Donald Stehr, Gale Carstens, Butch Munson and Myron Eggers. Jason Adam Teut, son of Gary Teut and Kandi Friesz, was born at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on January 20, 1975, and died at the Univerity of Nebraska on September 5, 1975. He attained to seven months and fifteen days. He was baptized on January 23, 1975, by the Rev. Firnhaber.

He is survived by his parents Gary and Kandi, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Teut of Danbury and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Friesz of Marshalltown, Iowa.

Bearers were Paul Briggle Jr., Danny Teut, Dwayne Lee and Dan Wells. Interment was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, "In the Garden of the Good Sheperd", Denison, Iowa

Jensine (Krogh) Jorgensen (1893 - 1964)

Manning - Funeral rites for Mrs. Jensine (Zena) Jorgensen, 71, of Manilla, were held at 11 a. m. on Monday morning , Sept. 28, at the Trinity Lutheran church in Manilla, with burial in Nishnabotna cemetery. The body rested at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla until time of rites.

Daughter of T. J. and Christina Christensen Krogh, she was born April 26, 1893 in Vorning, Denmark. She came to the United States with her family in 1904, at the age of 11, and settled in the Astor area. On July 16, 1916, she was married to Jorgen H. Jorgensen, who died in November 1957.

The couple farmed near Manilla and Defiance until Mr. Jorgensen's death, when she moved to Manilla. She suffered a broken hip in 1961, and a heart attack in June of this year. She died in a physician's office in Manilla following a heart attack on Friday afternoon, Sept. 25 (1964).

Mrs. Jorgensen was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by six sons: Robert LaVerne, Manilla; Frank Elden, Denison; Raymond J., Manilla; Kenneth Eugene, Storm Lake; Allen Jorgen, Schleswig, and Bernard LeRoy, Manila; 18 grandchildren; 3 sisters: Mrs. John (Marie) Nieman, Harlan; Mrs. Meinhardt (Elsie) Steckelberg, Manilla, and Mrs. Kenneth (Katherine) Justice, Manilla; and a brother, Chris Krogh, Everly.

Jens Petersen Edsen (1892 - 1972)

Funeral services for Jens Edsen were held Saturday morning, November 11, 1972, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. F. A. Wiese officiating.

Jens Petersen Edsen, son of Ferdinand Edsen and Elise Petersen was born on April 2, 1892, in Lund by Husum, Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany.

In February 1910, he came to the United States, settling at Schleswig, Iowa. He worked as a hired hand for several years in Ida and Woodbury Counties. He began farming for himself in the fall of 1912.

He was married to Laura Zabel on November 26, 1912. He farmed in Grant township, Ida County until 1945. In 1946, he moved to Schleswig. Because of failing health, he took up residence in Morningside Manor, Ida Grove, in 1971. He entered the Horn Memorial Hospital November 1 and died there November 8, 1972. He attained to 81 years, 7 months and 6 days.

He was preceded in death by his wife Laura who died in 1965. He is survived by 4 children: Meinhart of Minster, California; Elvera, Wife of Virtus Hollander of Kiron, Edgar and Edwin of Ida Grove; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, and one brother Johannes living in Germany.

Pallbearers were: Craig Edsen, Rodger Larson, Leon Edsen, Jerry Edsen, Roger Chisholm and Dale Edsen. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery.

Jens Peter Friedrichsen (1899 - 1969)

Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, February 19 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts for Jens P. Friedrichsen, with Pastor F. A. Wiese officiating. The organist, Mrs. Marlene Lee accompanied to congregation with singing of the hymns, "Just As I Am" and "My Faith Looks Up To Thee."

Jens Peter Friedrichsen, of Ricketts, son of Henry Friedrichsen and Maria nee Brodersen, was born the 18th of June 1899 at Almsdorf, Schleswig-Holstein. He came to America in 1923 and settled in Crawford County.

He was married to Bertha Schoenfeld on November 19th, 1926. The couple farmed northwest of Ricketts. In 1954, they moved to the town of Ricketts. Jens was owner of the Ricketts Bowling Lanes from 1953-1963 when he retired. He was one of the original members of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He had been ill for the past year and died at St. Luke's Medical Center, Sioux City on Sunday, February 16th (1969).

He is survived by his wife Bertha, 5 children: Gloria Schmidt of Omaha, Robert of Granton, Wisc., Raymond of Danbury, Richard of Minneapolis, and Roger of Charter Oak. One brother , Henry of Schleswig, 1 sister, Cecelia Thomsen of Germany, 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He attained to 69 years, 7 months and 28 days.

Pallbearers were Donald Clausen, Alfred Schoenfeldt, Fredric Schoenfeldt, Freddie Friedrichsen, Arlo Schoenfeldt and Herbert Teut. Interment was at Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.

Joachine Wilhelmine (Rahn) Evers (1878 - 1966)

Funeral services for Joachine Wilhelmine Rahn (Mrs. F. William Evers), were held Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Zion Lutheran church with Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with hymns sung by the Lutheran Ladies' choir.

Daughter of John and Sophie (Becker) Rahn, she was born in Goodrich township, Crawford county on April 8, 1878 where she grew to womanhood.

On March 1, 1899, she was married to F. William Evers and to this union four children were born. After their marriage, they farmed for two years near Deloit; then moved to Goodrich township, where they farmed until retiring to make their home in Denison in 1928.

She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Denison. She had been bedfast for nearly three years and on Dec, 22 was taken to the Denison hospital where she died on Jan. 26 (1966).

Preceding her in death were her her parents, an infant daughter, Dorthea, one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren, one brother and three sisters.

Survivors include her husband, two sons, Edward and William of Denison, one daughter, Mrs. Rosa Denker, Denison; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Derald Evers, Delmer Denker, Robert Rank, Ralph Vogt, Virgil Winquist and Melvin Holdsworth. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery with Maxwell Funeral home in charge of the arrangements.

Johannes Adolph Eggert (1887 - 1979)

Johannes Adolph Eggert was born Jan. 24, 1887 in Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Adolph and Alvena Ruberg Eggert. He died March 7, 1979 at Eventide Lutheran Home , Denison, at the age of 92.

Johannes was raised on a family farm and attended rural schools. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On March 23, 1910, Johannes was united in marriage to Christina Hildebrandt in Crawford County. He farmed near Denison in Hanover Township until 1945 when he retired and moved to Denison. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served his church in various capacities.

Survivors include, one son Harold and his wife Irene of Denison, five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Lydia Eggert and Mrs. Ida Eggert Vogt, both of Denison.

Funeral services were held March 9, at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated the services. Pallbearers were Jim Nemitz, Kurt Cripsin, Jim Long, Larry Gessman, David Keating and Vernon Schroeder. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison.

Johannes H. Detlefsen (1875 - 1971)

Funeral services for Johannes Detlefsen were held at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, on Wednesday, April 14, 1971 at 2 p.m. Rev. W. W. Watson officiated with Mrs. Harold Norman as organist.

Johannes H. Detlefsen was born August 13, 1875 in Moldenit-Schleswig-Holstein Germany where he received his schooling as a youth. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1890. He served in the Army from 1895 to 1897.

He came to the United States December 24, 1897 and lived with his uncle, Christian Marguardsen, on the farm in Denison, Iowa. In 1903 he became a citizen of the United States. He farmed until the year 1939 and retired.

In 1956 he went back to Germany on a six months visit, where he celebrated his 80th birthday with some of his old friends. After he returned from Germany he made his home with Hans Detlefsen and family in Schleswig, Iowa.

He departed this life on April 12, 1971 at the age of 95 years, 7 months and 29 days.

Survivors are his sister, Emma Henkel of Tacoma, Washington and brother Peter of Clarke, North Dakota and brother Hans of Schleswig.

Pallbearers were: Leroy Fredericks, Melroy Groth, Wilbert Groth, Henry J. Schroeder, Arlo Jensen and Louis Hinricksen. Interment was in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa

Johannes H. Schroeder (1884 - 1972)

Funeral Services were held August 9, 1972 at 10:30 at the Zion Lutheran church in Manning for Johannes H. Schroeder, 87. Pastor Edward Heinicke officiated with burial in the Manning cemetery.

Johannes H. Schroeder was born Oct. 1884 in Hayes township and died Aug. 6 (1972) at Eventide in Denison. He was born and raised on a farm in Hayes township, Crawford county and attended rural schools.

He married Clara Kruse on April 27, 1910 and farmed northwest of Manning on the same farm until 1963 when he entered Eventide where he lived until his death. He was a member of Zion Lutheran church in Manning.

Mr. Schroeder was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, who died May 31, 1943, five brothers, Herman, Henry, Louie, August, Frederick, two sisters, Mrs. John (Augusta) Vinke and Mrs. C. H. (Alfrieda) Jahn.

Survivors include three sons, Vernon of Denison, Wilbur of Arcadia, Merlin of Denison, three daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Christensen of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Bernice Justice of Manning and Mrs. Phyllis Jans of Westside, one sister Mrs. Emma Stombaugh of Egan, S. D., 20 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

John Carl Eggen (1876 - 1963)

John Carl Eggen was born at Clinton on April 15, 1876, the son of August Eggen and Katherine Henrichsen Eggen, and died July 31, 1963 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 16 days.

Mr. Eggen was united in marriage to Alvine Anna Teut, at Clinton, and to this union five children were born: Haidee, Helen, Harold, Esther and Florence. Mr. and Mrs. Eggen moved from Clinton County to the Charter Oak vicinity where they were engaged in farming for many years, later moving to Denison where Mr. Eggen became custodian of the Zion Lutheran Church.

Mr. Eggen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alvine, two daughters, Esther and Florence, one brother and four sisters.

He leaves to mourn two daughters and one son, Mrs. Haidee Petersen of Charter Oak, Mrs. Helen Kroll of Sioux City and Harold Eggen of Ute; 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 3, 1963 at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran church in Denison with the pastor, Rev. Carly W. Schmidt in charge. Comfort in music was given by F. H. Greinke, organist, and the Lutheran Ladies' Choir. Pallbearers were Herbert Eggen, Raymond Else, Paul Kuhlmann, Jr., Alvie Lill, Carl Paulsen and Melvin Teut. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Charter Oak. Services were conducted by the Huebner Funeral home of Denison
