Herman Miller (1901 - 1986)

Herman "Pete" Miller was born on March 26, 1901, in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Herman and Sophie Gierstorf Miller. He died Tuesday morning, February 4, 1986, at his home in rural Ricketts at the age of 84.

Pete spent his formative years on his family's farm in Morgan Township. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. He received his formal education in the rural schools in Morgan Township.

He was united in marriage to Irene Schultz on February 26, 1930, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Together they made their first home on a farm in north Morgan Township. They moved to the farm near Ricketts in 1941. Pete and Irene celebrated fifty years of marriage February 26, 1980. Pete was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served nine years as a trustee.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and John.

Survivors include his wife Irene of Ricketts and three sisters, Elnora Neubaum of Denison, Irene Rothe of Onawa and Mildred Clausen of Schleswig, as well as nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 7, 1986, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. Interment was in the St. Paul's Cemetery. The Rev. S. W. Holstein officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Penny Ewoldt served as organist for the services. Congregational hymns for the services included "Just As I Am" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Serving as honorary pallbearers for the services were Phillip Rabe, Warren Hennings, Allen Schau, Charles Greene, Raymond Loeck, Vernon Jepsen, Ray Schmadeke, Larry Beeck, Vernon Stockfleth and Keith Schmadeke. Serving as pallbearers for the services were Marc Moeller, Louis Moeller, Dennis Moeller, Louis Schmadeke, Marlowe Schultz and Harlan Schmadeke.

Herman A. Weber (1901 - 1984)

Funeral services for Herman A. Weber, 82, 203 9th St. NW, who died Feb. 16 1984, in a Watertown, S.D. hospital, were held at 10 a.m. Feb. 20 in St. Martin's Lutheran Church. Vicar James Hoff officiated. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers were Timothy Cordell, Chris Hoffman, Steven, Richard and Roger Weber and Jon Snow. The soloist was Mary Schmal, accompanied by Daniel Schmal.

Mr. Weber was born Nov. 7, 1901, at Bern, Switzerland, to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Weber. He attended schools and served in the army in Switzerland. He immigrated to the Denison area in 1921.

He married Louisa Busskohl Sept. 14, 1927, at Denison. Mr. Weber served on the ASC Board and other agriculture committees and as a director on the East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, school board.

The couple moved to the Watertown, S.D. area in 1961, where he was employed by the Loken Sales Pavilion until his retirement in 1973.

He is survived by his wife: three daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Sally) Keairines and Mrs. LaVern (Phyllis) Cordell of Watertown, S.D. and Mrs. Jerry (Fern) Hoffman of Adair; three sons, Harry of Henry, Carl of Watertown, S.D., and Thomas of Purdy, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Herman William Grage (1902 - 1982)

Herman William, son of Claus and Reka Woltman Grage, was born June 14, 1902, at Bloomfield, Neb. Soon thereafter the family moved to the Manilla area where Herman attended the rural schools.

In 1927 on this twenty-fifth birthday, Herman was united in marriage with Emma Hansen. To this union were born four sons; Claus, Edward, Donald, and Larry.

Herman farmed near Manilla for many years, first for seventeen years with his folks, then to the Hayes farm, and then to Walker-town for twenty-six years where he operated an acreage. Herman and Emma have made their home in Manilla for the past years, where Herman died unexpectedly March 25 (1982) at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 11 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by three sisters, twins Lillie and Laura who died in infancy, and Elsie Neuhofel; by a brother, Walter; and by his oldest son, Claus.

Herman is survived by his wife, Emma; by three sons, Edward and his wife Betty and Donald and his wife Betty, all of Manilla and Larry and his wife Leona of Bensenville, Ill. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Herman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla.

Funeral services were held March 29 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Manilla, with Rev. Frank B. Christ officiating. Music was by Larry Genzen, soloist and Trudy Saunders, organist. Pallbearers were Doug Grage, Rick Grage, Doug Bornhoft, Bradley Grage, Terry Grage and Dennis Hansen. The Ohde Funeral Home of Manilla was in charge of the arrangements with burial in the Nishnabotna Cemetery.

Hertha M. (Mundt) Meyer (1906 - 1985)

Hertha M. Meyer was born Sept. 17, 1906, near Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Louie and Dora Kahl Mundt. She died on Friday morning, May 3, 1985, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb. at the age of 78.

Hertha spent her formative years in the Denison community. She received her formal education in the Denison community schools. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Hertha was united in marriage to Walter H. Meyer on Feb. 5, 1925, in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm south of Denison. Walter died on Jan. 17, 1982. Hertha continued to make her home on the farm until recently entering the hospital due to failing health.

Hertha was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Workshop, and a member of the Willing Neighbors Club for over fifty years. She was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid for thirty-five years. Hertha will be remembered by family and friends at her skill at china painting.

In addition to her husband and parents, Hertha was preceded in death by one sister, Frieda and one brother, Albert.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley, Mrs. Leonard Ahrenholtz of Denison and Mrs. Gladys Hulsebus of Ft. Colling, Colo.; one son, Robert and wife Delores of Denison. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Leona Shatford of Oceanside, Calif., as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 6, 1985, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included Jesus, Lead Thou On, and I'm But a Stranger Here. Serving as pallbearers were Roger Walde, Lowell Chapman, Steven Hulsebus, Scott Meyer, Tim Ahrenholtz and Ted Ahrenholtz. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Hertha Adele Maria (Thomsen) Evers (1905 - 1990)

Hertha Adele Maria Evers was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, Feb. 19, 1905, the daughter of Andrew A. and Margaretha Albertsen Thomsen. She was raised on farms in Goodrich and Denison Townships receiving her education in the rural and Denison schools. She was baptized at the Center School in Goodrich Township and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, May 21, 1921.

On Feb. 9, 1927, Hertha was united in marriage with Edward J. Evers at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. They made their home on a farm in Goodrich Township where they farmed until retiring. In 1975, the Evers moved to Denison. Since June 15, 1987, Hertha had resided at the Denison Care Center and it was there that her death occurred Saturday morning, Dec. 1, 1990. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 85 years, nine months and 12 days.

Throughout her adult life, Hertha enjoyed doing fancy work, crocheting, cooking, and belonging to card clubs. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Including her parents, Hertha was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Mardella Ann Evers; one granddaughter, Sharon K. Evers; one brother, Andrew Thomsen; and three sisters, Sophia Ransom, Magdeline Signall and Christine Thomsen, who died in infancy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Edward J. Evers of Denison; four children and their spouses: Darlene and Ralph Vogt of Charter Oak, Norma and Alfred Schoenfeld of Schleswig, Derald and Pat Evers of Denison and Ardell and Henry Ewoldt of Deloit; 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Denker of Denison; one sister-in-law, Ella Thomsen of Denison and one brother-in-law, William Evers of Denison; also nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating. Vocal selections included "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art" rendered by Henry Henningsen. The congregation sang "I'm But A Stranger Here" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. The pallbearers were Hertha's 10 grandchildren: Dean Vogt, Burdette Vogt, Terry Vogt, Kevin Vogt, Lydell Schoenfeld, Calise Thygesen, Leon Schoenfeld, Karen Evers, Mark Ewoldt and Dale Ewoldt. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Hertha E. (Jurgensen) Janssen (1903 - 1993)

Hertha E. Janssen, the daughter of Charles and Augusta Rlckert Jurgensen, was born September 4, 1903. She died on Sunday, November 14, 1993 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City at the age of ninety years.

Hertha was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Evangelical Friedens church in Schleswig. She began her elementary education in a rural school near her home and graduated from the Schleswig High School.

On July 15, 1925, Hertha was united in marriage to William Janssen of Ida Grove in Schleswig. The couple settled on a farm east of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two children. They continued farming in the Schleswig area until William's death in 1939, when Hertha moved to Schleswig. Hertha was employed as a cook at various restaurants and at the Schleswig School. She remained living in Schleswig until 1992 when she entered the Odebolt Colonial Manor.

Hertha was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who enjoyed caring for her family. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and very dedicated to her Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; one son in infancy and one sister, Louise Schultz. Survivors include one daughter, Avis Kuehl of Sioux City; three grandchildren, LoaLane Nixon of Springfield, Missouri; William Kuehl of Centreville, Virginia and Tami Kuehl of Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. James Schatz officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Barb Buffum singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". Pallbearers were: Gerald Pedersen, Daryl Pedersen, William Kuehl, Leon Clausen, Dale Jensen and Dean Box. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Hertha Mary (Namanny) Creese (1903 - 1995)

Hertha Mary Creese was born July 13, 1903, the daughter of Henry and Mathilde Wiedemann Namanny. She died on Tuesday, January 10, 1995 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-one years.

She was born on the family farm in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa where she lived with her parents. As a young girl, Hertha received her education at a rural school in Morgan Township and after receiving her education she was employed by various families.

On January 16, 1924, Hertha was united in marriage to Percey Creese of Charter Oak, at the Methodist Parsonage in Charter Oak. The couple made their home on the family farm west of Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of four sons. Percey died in 1963 and Hertha remained living on the farm until entering the Eventide Nursing Home on September 9, 1990.

Hertha was a member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Charter Oak Chapter of Royal Neighbors, American Legion Auxiliary and several card clubs. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed the time she spent with her family. She enjoyed baking rye bread and pies, bowling, playing the organ, and socializing with friends in a game of cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, William, John, Lawrence and Julius.

Survivors include: four sons, Orlen and his wife, Phyllis, LeVerne and his wife, Joann, all of Charter Oak; Elwin and his wife, June of Des Moines; and Percy of Charter Oak and his special friend, Diana Thomas of Soldier, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, three sisters, Minnie Vogt of Denison; Marie Pierce of Lancaster, California; Lill Snyder of Riviera, Arizona one brother, Vernon Namanny and his wife, Inez of Blythe, California. Also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends will miss her.

Funeral services were held at 10 A.M., Friday, January 13, 1995 at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. Donald Frizzell officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Karen Kahl served as organ accompaniment for Henry Henningsen's solos of "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymn "How Great Thou Art." Honorary Pallbearers were Sherri and Kevin Boozikee, Greg and Tina Creese and Ann E. Creese. Pallbearers were: Debbie and Denny Goetzinger, Janine and Jerry Waldrop, Randy and Karin Creese, Linda and Mark Spiegel. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them for lunch at the Charter Oak Community Building, served by the United Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Hertha (Rathje) Schmidt (1901 - 1975)

Mrs. Hertha Schmidt, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rathje, was born March 20, 1901 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa and departed from this life at Lake View, Iowa, Sunday afternoon, June 22, 1975, from a heart attack. She reached the age of 74 years, 3 months and 2 days.

On June 11, 1901, in her infancy, she was dedicated to God in Holy Baptism. She received her education in the public schools of Crawford County. She became a member of Frieden's Evangelical and Reformed Church, now the United Church of Christ April 16, 1916, by the rite of confirmation, by the Rev. W.R. Wetzler, and has been a member of the church since that time.

She was united in marriage to Frank J. Schmidt on January 29, 1924. Two sons were born to their union. They lived on a farm southeast of Schleswig. Mr. Schmidt departed from this life March 13, 1952. She and her son Raynard remained on the farm until 1967 when she moved to her home in Schleswig. Mrs. Schmidt was a lifelong member of the church and a member of the Women's Guild.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves to mourn her death her two sons, Burdell Schmidt of Denison and Raynard Schmidt of Vail; her two daughters-in-law, Alice and Ruth; ten grandchildren Sharon, Nancy, Barbara, Darrell, Judy, Diane, Dean, Debra, Karen and Delbert Schmidt; and a step granddaughter, Barbara Fett of Omaha, Nebraska; besides her friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 25, 1975, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with the Rev. A.F. Rinne officiating. Music was furnished by organist, Mrs; John Evers and a duet by Mrs. Harlan Buffum and Mrs. Don Meyer.

Hilda Anna (Maak) Schoenfeld (1900 - 1985)

Hilda Anna Thun Schoenfeld, daughter of Johannas and Wiebke Boyens Thun Maak, was born on May 9, 1900 at Morgan Township. She died Friday morning, December 27, 1985 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 85.

Hilda spent her childhood years on a farm in Crawford County. She was baptized in Charter Oak by Rev. Amstein at the St. John's Lutheran Church and later confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church at Denison. She received her education at Hanover Township School.

Hilda was united in marriage to Arthur Schoenfeld on January 9, 1923 at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. Freeze. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. In 1930 they moved to Charter Oak. From 1955 on they spent their retirement years in Charter Oak.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Crawford County Republican Women and the American Legion Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister Freida Thun, one brother Hans Thun, two half-brothers August and Herman Maak, one stepbrother Louie Maak and one step-sister Edna Nabb.

Survivors include her son, Arlo Schoenfeld and wife Mary of Charter Oak, two granddaughters Carrie of Charlotte, North Carolina and Cecilia at home. She is further survived by one sister Anna Hiller of Charter Oak, two half-sisters Martha Watke of Charter Oak and Lydia Eggert of Denison, one stepbrother Henry Maack of Dunlap, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 30, 1985 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Vicar Steven Hulke officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Gale Carstens, Curt Olson, Robert Janett, Robert Elliott, Dan Throckmorton and John W. Hobbs. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Hilda Anna Dorthea (Kuehl) Stender (1901 - 1987)

Hilda Anna Dorthea Stender was born on April 1, 1901, in Morgan Township, the daughter of Henry N. Kuehl and Adela Struck Kuehl. She died on July 20, 1987, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 86 years.

Hilda lived on the family farm and attended the rural Morgan Township school. She was baptized as an infant in the Grant Township Lutheran Church, and was confirmed on April 16, 1916, in the Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa.

On May 4, 1921, Hilda and Theodore August Stender of Schleswig were united in marriage in the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig and to this union one daughter, Valera, was born.

After marriage, Hilda and Theodore farmed northwest of Schleswig until retiring in March of 1967 when they moved to Schleswig. Theodore died in August of 1967 but Hilda remained in Schleswig until November of 1982, when she entered the Denison Care Center.

Hilda was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and also the Women's Guild of the church.

In addition to her husband and parents, Hilda was preceded in death by one brother, Otto Kuehl, and one sister, Ann, Mrs. Bart Bielenberg.

Survivors include her daughter, Valera, and her husband, Jim Stern of Schleswig, Iowa; two grandchildren, Janice Stern of Iowa City, Iowa, and Kim James Stern, and his wife, Georgia of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two great-grandchildren, Erika and Alexa Stern both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and one sister, Lillian, Mrs. A.J. Smith of East Carbon, Utah.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 1987, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Darrell Bailey officiated the service and the graveside rites. Mrs. Evelyn Johnson served as organist for Mrs. Barbara Buffum, soloist. Selections were "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art". Serving as pallbearers were Burdell Jensen, James Else, Gary Reimer, Orlan Abbe, Larry Struck and Scott Bielenberg.

Hilda (Carstens) Fuller (1908 - 1995)

Hilda, the daughter of William and Dorothea Schiernbeck Carstens, was born May 9, 1908 near Schleswig, Iowa. The family later lived near Buck Grove and Defiance. Hilda was graduated from Defiance High School in 1926. She went to summer school and took Normal Training, teaching school at Dow City, Buck Grove and Hamilton. She will be remembered as the first girls' basketball coach in Dow City.

On September 28, 1938 Hilda was united in marriage with Garth Fuller. Two children, Corene and Jim, were born to this union. Hilda lived on a farm west of Manilla all her life. From 1956 until 1995 she made Denison mustard. Hilda and her husband also raised turkeys arid other farm produce.

Hilda had been in failing health for the past month. She was hospitalized at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison and died there on Tuesday morning, May 23, 1995 at the age of 87 years and 14 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garth, her parents; a great-grandchild, Heather Price; and four brothers: Erwin as a child, Alfred, Wilbert and Emil.

Survivors include her children: Corene and her husband, Fred Whitmer, of Sebastian, Florida and Jim Fuller and his wife, Georgann, of Manilla; seven grandchildren: Jennifer, Jessica, Susie, Renee, Jim, Tania, and Courtney; two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Katharine; a sister, Irma and her husband, Herb Bromert, of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Hilda was an active supporter of the Cancer Association and the Heart Association. She held membership in the Presbyterian Church in Manilla.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 26, 1995 at 10:00 A.M. at.the Presbyterian Church in Manilla, Iowa with the Reverend Kenneth Ritchie officiating. Music was provided by organist Trudy Saunders and vocal accompaniment was by Kay Rutherford singing "Rock of Ages". Casketbearers were Lloyd Carstens, Kent Lansink, Alvin Miller, Wayne Saunders, Dr. J.M. Hennessey and Lynn Phillips. Interment was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa.

Hilda Anna Christina (Jepsen) Jaacks (1909 - 1989)

Hilda Anna Christina Jaacks was born May 4, 1909, in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Ia., the daughter of Henry and Mary Hollander Jepsen. Raised on the family farm, she attended country schools. Hilda was baptized into the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in September of 1909, and was confirmed there in April of 1922.

On Nov. 30, 1932, she married Meinhardt Jaacks at Blair, Neb. The couple made their home in Denison and were the parents of seven children. After her marriage, Hilda completed nurse's aide training. She was employed by Saunders Nursing Home, Claudia's Nursing Home and the Denison Care Center for a total of 18 years. In December of 1973 she retired from the Care Center.

Meinhardt died April 16, 1982, and Hilda continued to make her home in Denison. She was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Her greatest pleasure and enjoyment were her children and grandchildren.

Hilda's death occurred Sept. 7, 1989, at her home in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 80 years, four months and three days.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Meinhardt; and a brother, Walter Jepsen.

Survivors include her seven children and their spouses: Robert and Norma Jaacks of Webster City, Richard and LeAnn Jaacks of Spirit Lake, Ruth and Robert Bell of Kiron, Roger and Courtney Jaacks of Tallahassee, Fla., Ronald and Pat Jaacks of Webb City, Mo., Roseann and Robert Olson of Kiron and Rhonda and Doug Wessel of Denison. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Doretta Jepsen of Denison; and two sisters-in-law, Minnie Boyens of Denison and Marie Krayniski of Omaha.

Funeral services were held Monday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Comfort in music was provided by soloist Henry Henningsen, who sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Karen Kahl served as organist and accompanied the congregational hymn, "Nearer, My God To Thee." Pallbearers included James Jaacks, Rick Jaacks, Michael Jaacks, Rodney Olson, Ronnie Olson and Troy Wessel. Honorary pallbearers were Travis Wessel, Roxy Greenfield, Brad Kimball, Richard Evans, Fred Johnson and Darin Schau. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig. Hilda (Preul) Maack (1907 - 1982)

Hilda Maack was born on a farm in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, March 30, 1907, the daughter of August and Fannie Peters Preul. She received her formal education at the local rural schools near her home including the Willow Township No. 4 School. Hilda was baptized April 10, 1910, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and on March 25, 1923, was confirmed at the same church.

On Feb. 23, 1927, Hilda was united in marriage with Edward Maack at Charter Oak. They made their home on a farm south of Charter Oak and later lived on farms in the Dow City and Kiron areas before moving to Vail in 1944. They resided there until their retirement and in 1966 moved to Denison. Edward died Jan. 18, 1971, and Hilda continued to reside in their home in Denison.

Hilda entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital June 10, and it was there she died, June 11 (1982). At the time of her death she had attained the age of 75 years, 2 months, and 11 days. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two infant brothers, and two sisters, Anna Schoenfeld and Clara Hagemann.

She is survived by one son, Merlin E. Maack of Denison, one daughter, JoAnn (Mrs. Lyle) Meyer of Denison, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, four brothers, Fred Preul of Mapleton, Henry Preul of Denison, Edward Preul of Charter Oak, and Louis Preul of Denison. Three sisters, Mrs. Lena Sander of Charter Oak, Mrs. Hattie Hagemann of Ricketts, and Ella (Mrs. Walter) Steckelberg of Denison. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were her seven grandsons, Charles Meyer, Lynnel Meyer, Jerry Meyer, Donald Maack, Duane Maack, Stanley ...

Hilda Marie (Mohr) Brodersen (1904 - 2003)

Hilda Marie Brodersen, nee Mohr, was born May 3, 1904 in Schleswig, Iowa, the second daughter of Fred W. Mohr and Mamie Henrietta Jepsen Mohr. She was baptized June 6, 1903 at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig and confirmed there in 1919.

Hilda was graduated from Schleswig High School with the class of 1922. After graduation she assisted her father and Uncle William in the family's "City Cafe".

On November 12, 1929, Hilda was united in marriage with Frederick A. Brodersen at Council Bluffs, Iowa. They made their home in Denison where she assisted her husband in operating Brodersen Radio and Electric until they retired in 1959. In her spare time she enjoyed needle work, quilting and playing bridge, accumulating master points. After Frederick's death in 1973, she lived alone until entering the Denison Care Center in 1989.

Hilda died at the Care Center Friday, February 28, 2003. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 98 years, 9 months and 25 days. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, Malinda M. Evers and one nephew, Everett Evers.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include nieces and nephews. Private interment services were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service was provided by Renae Claussen singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Hilda M. (Gregosches) Schneller (1908 - 1992)

Hilda M. Schneller was born the daughter of Jurgen and Emma Jepsen Gregosches, on April 23, 1908. She died on Friday, July 24, 1992 at the Jenny Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs at the age of 84 years.

Hilda was born on a farm in Ida County, and grew up on a farm south of Schleswig where she received her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, she was employed by various farmers in the region as needed.

On Feb. 28, 1928, she was united in marriage to Henry Schneller at the Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig. The couple lived on a farm in Buck Grove before moving to other farms in the Crawford County region. They were blessed with the birth of six children. While Henry was working for the railroad, the couple bought a house in Deloit and subsequently a farm.

Hilda was employed for many years at Armours and also at Cronk's Cafe in Denison. She was a loving wife and devoted mother who cared for her family with diligence and affection. She placed a high regard for the warmth of family love and provided those she loved with a happiness that will always be remembered. After retiring, she occupied her free time helping with Ladies Aid in church, canning, crocheting, socializing with her canasta club and Senior Citizen organization.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry, six brothers and sisters, five of whom died in infancy and one sister, Adela, at the age of 17 years. Also one brother-in-law, Bill Jeschke, three sons-in-law, John Fineran, Reed Dohse and Allen North, and one great-grandson.

Survivors include, three daughters, Lorraine Aschinger and her husband Marlin of Deloit, DeLores Dohse of Westside, EmyLou North of Vail, three sons, Ronald and his wife Dorothy of Camanche, Henry and his wife Patricia of Tomahawk, Wis., and Robert and his wife Myrna of Denison, 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Ella Jeschke of Denison.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 28, 1992 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit. Pastor Hilmer Hafner officiated the service and graveside rites held in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mary Ellen Hafner provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "Crown Him with Many Crowns" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea." Honorary pallbearers were Deanna Fineran, Brenda Rasche, Laurie Lashier, Lori Schneller, Sandy Grage and Mindy Dohse. Pallbearers were Kevin Meyerman, Craig Schneller, Denny Fineran, Greg Schneller, Tom Dohse and Rodney Koch. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Hildegard (Arens) Solbach (1903 - 1999)

Hildegard "Hilde" Solbach was born November 30, 1903 at Barmen, Germany, the daughter of Josef and Henrietta (Peetzen) Arens. She was raised in Dusseldorf and began the trade as a seamstress at the age of 15 years.

She married Paul Solbach May 21, 1927 at Dusseldorf. Paul then left for America seeking a new life and opportunities for the couple. He settled in Defiance, Iowa where he established a meat market. Hildegard joined him in February of 1929 and together they ran the meat market until moving to Denison in 1937. They opened the City Market which they operated until retirement in 1965.

Paul died in 1976 and Hildegard moved to Hawarden in 1991. For the past two years she lived at the Hawarden Community Hospital in the extended care rooms, where she died on Saturday, February 6, 1999 at the age of 95 years.

She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Parish and Altar Society in Denison, and in Hawarden the St. Mary Catholic Church and Guild. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. Her skill as a seamstress was used all her life, sewing for family, friends and altar Society. During WWII she made significant contributions to the Red Cross War Effort.

Surviving relatives include her son, Rolf Solbach and wife, Carlene of Algona, Iowa; daughter, Lieselotte "Lotte" Streit of Hawarden; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter; and nephew, Hans-Josef Arens in Germany She was preceded in death by 4 brothers; a son-in-law; daughter-in-law; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Streit.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison, Iowa. Fr. F.P. Reischl, Fr. Andrew Hoffmann and Deacon Joe Maher officiated the service with burial at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, Denison. John Digilio provided the organ accompaniment for soloists, Jan Rau and Norbert Stracke. Pallbearers were: Thomas Streit, Thaddeus Streit, David Solbach, Ronald Solbach, Anthony Solbach and Rolf Solbach Jr. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

H. Milton Childress (1906 - 1998)

H. Milton Childress was born April 25, 1906, the son of Harry Milton and Josie Winans Childress. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa on Monday, January 12, 1998 at the age of ninety-one.

Milton was born on a farm near Deloit, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education, Milton worked with his father for Crawford County as a road maintainer.

In 1935, Milton was united in marriage to Opal Imes. The couple farmed near Deloit and were blessed with the birth of two sons. Besides farming, Milton was a mail carrier for the Denison Newspaper for twenty-one years. In 1972, the couple moved to an acreage south of Denison.

Opal died in 1976 and Milton was later united in marriage to Helen Namanny Meyer on October 2, 1982 at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Parsonage in Woodbine. They made their home in Denison. Milton was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denison. He was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who always had time for others. He enjoyed farming, raising Black Angus cattle and purebred Chester White hogs. Milton also loved to have coffee with his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Opal, two sisters, Beryl Childress and Inez Boysen.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Denison; two sons, Maynard Childress of Manilla; LeRoy Childress and his wife, Dorothy of Denison; one step-son, Clark Meyer of Des Moines; three step-daughters, Maria McKee and her husband, Michael of Denison; Lisha Beermann and her husband, Richard of Dow City; Tammy Ransom and her husband, Rusty of Branson, Missouri; two grandchildren, Pam Childress of Denison; Sarah Childress of Storm Lake; five step-grandchildren; one sister, Irma Thorne of Des Moines; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M., Thursday, January 15, 1998 at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Denison, Iowa. Elder Ted Morris officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison. Beverly Custer provided the organ accompaniment for the Morris Family singing "In the Garden" and "Just as I Am, Without One Plea". Those serving as pallbearers were: Richard Beermann, Marvin Huelsing, Harold Jurgensen, Norman Thelen, Fred Hansen and Mike McKee. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Pastorial Care. Hugo Herman Brus (1907 - 1993)

Hugo Herman Brus was born on a farm in the Manilla and Aspinwall area February 14, 1907, the son of Henry and Anna Eggers Brus. He was raised on the farm and received his formal education in the local rural schools. Following his schooling and prior to his marriage he farmed with his father.

On January 20, 1937, Hugo was united in marriage with Elvera L. Wiedemann at the Friedens Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children, Verdell, LaJune, and Karen. They made their home on a farm near Manning, Iowa, until 1942 when they moved to the farm west of Denison. In 1959 they moved to Denison and Hugo maintained an active interest in farming with his son as long as his health permitted.

Since May 15, 1991, Hugo had resided at the Dunlap Care Center in Dunlap, Iowa, where his death occurred early Saturday morning, January 30, 1993. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 16 days.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. In his spare time, Hugo enjoyed playing cards and some fishing.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Those who survived Hugo to cherish his memory include his wife Elvera L. Brus of Denison, Iowa, three children and spouses, Verdell and Carol Brus of Denison, Iowa, LaJune and Martin Magill of Perry, Iowa, and Karen and John Knudson of Everest, Kansas, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one brother and his wife, Carl and Marie Brus of Manning, Iowa, and one sister and her husband, Edna and Bill Lohrmann of Manilla, Iowa. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held, at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 2, 1993, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa with the Rev. James M. Shatz officiating. Music for the service was provided by Barbara Buffum singing "In The Garden" and How Great Thou Art" with Evelyn Johnson serving as organist. Casket bearers included Jerry Brus, John Brus, Warren Albertsen, Dick Saunders, Alan Lorenzen, and Dale Schiernbeck. Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Hugo H. Frehse (1905 - 1994)

Hugo H. Frehse was born on the family farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa May 28, 1905, the son of Hans and Anna Wilke Frehse. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Tuesday, April 5, 1994 at the age of eighty-eight years.

He received his education in a rural school near his home where he helped his family on the farm. He was baptized on July 9, 1905 and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 13, 1919 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

In 1923, after completing his education, he began working for a heating and sheet metal contractor in Denison and was subsequently united in marriage to Elsie Claussen on June 8, 1930 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple settled in Denison and were blessed with the birth of one son.

In 1932, Hugo started a heating and sheet metal business known as Hugo's Tin Shop, later becoming Frehse Heating and Cooling which he continued operating until retiring in 1968. After retiring, he continued to occupy his leisure time repairing clocks, riding his bicycle and visiting with family and friends.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, a member of their voters assembly sinse 1926 and was a past member of the board of trustees. On November 11, 1993, he moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison as a result of ill health. Hugo was a loving husband and caring father who enjoyed being with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1987, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his son, Harold and his wife, Una Belle of Denison; two grandsons, Jeffrey Frehse and his wife, Deborah, Craig Frehse and his wife, Tamie and one granddaughter, Candace Stuart and her husband," Tim all of Denison. Also great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Ryan, Gerrett and Danielle Frehse and Matthew Stuart all of Denison. Other survivors include: one brother-in-law, Pete Claussen of Denison; and three sisters-in-law: Emma Hausman of Odebolt, Ione Claussen of Denison; and Marie Bettin and her husband, Lawrence of Lake View.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 9, 1994 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Abide With Me. Fast Falls the Eventide", "How Graet Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were: Darold Lindstrom, Scott Claussen, Charles Bettin, Steve Frehse, Jerry Frehse and Gene Frehse. The family invited everyone in attenndance at the service to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Hulda Louise (Blunk) Ladwig (1904 - 1981)

Hulda Louise Ladwig was born Spet. 29, 1904, near Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Frieda Reimers Blunk. She died April 26, 1981, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 76.

Hulda was raised on a family farm near Denison. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church.

On Dec. 7, 1921, Hulda was united in marriage to Albert Ladwig at Denison. They made their home on a farm in Goodrich Township. In 1972 they retired from farming, but continued to make their home on the farm.

In addition to her parents, Hulda was preceded in death by one son Vernon, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one brother, Edward.

Survivors include, her husband, Albert of Denison, two sons, Edward and Melvin both of Ida Grove, three daughters, Dorothy, Mrs. Charles Furne of Denison, Mrs. Darline Henkel of Castana and Gladys, Mrs. Dean Hoffmeier of Rockwell City. Also by 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, one brother Carl Blunk and one sister, Mrs. Alice Vaughn of Denison.

Funeral services were held April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Mike Ladwig, Randy Hoffmeier, Ronnie Ladwig, Roger Henkel, Larry Furne and Howard Ladwig. Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Henkel, Rick Ladwig, David Hoffmeier, Jerry Furne, Dennis Ladwig and Daniel Ladwig. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ida Augusta (Ress) Jochimsen (1900 - 2000)

Ida Augusta, daughter of Gustav A. and Wilhelmina Anna Fischer Ress, was born September 22, 1900, on a farm in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. She was baptized on October 14, 1900, into the Lutheran Faith.

Ida attended country school near her home until 1913 when the family moved to a farm in the Manilla area and she started attending the Manilla schools. She also attended Lutheran School in Manning making her home with her grandpa and grandma Fred Fischer through the school week. Following her confirmation on March 28, 1915, she returned home and helped with the work there.

On January 30, 1929, Ida was united in marriage with Herman Jochimsen. They farmed near Manilla for many years and then retired to their new home in Manning. They raised four children. Ida was a life long member of the Lutheran Church. Ida was interested in tatting, quilting and crocheting. She belonged to several card clubs.

Herman died in 1991 and Ida continued to live in their home until she had a fall in January of 1998. On February 1, 1998, she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the age of 99 years, 6 months and 26 days.

Besides her husband and parents, Ida is preceded in death by three brothers: Ernest Ress; Emil Ress and Hugo Ress; and three sisters: Clara Hammer; Ella Asmus; and Pauline Lake.

She is survived by her children: Marion Ream of Manning; Winona and her husband LeRoy Rowedder of Manning; Karen and her husband Edward Bohm of Irving, Texas; and Marvin Jochimsen and his wife Suzanne of Jackson, Mississippi; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Edna Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska; Anna Hoelscher of Perry; and Norma Wenzel of Perham, Minnesota; one sister-in-law Lucille Ress of Manning; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 A.M., Friday, April 21, 2000 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Daniel Vogel and Pastor Curt Dwyer officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Manning Cemetery in Manning, Iowa. Carlys Stribe provided the organ music accompaniment for congregational hymns "I Know That My Redeemer Lives", "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Julie Jochimsen, Suzi Jochimsen, Emily Jochimsen, Linda Stroeher, Barb Oldham and Pastor Dale Bohm. Serving as pallbearers were Douglas Rowedder, Duane Monson, Allen Vennink, Vernon Ehlers, Vernon Larsen and Amos Asmus. The family invited everyone to join them in lunch and fellowship at the church. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ira C. Crane (1909 - 1995)

Ira C. Crane was born August 20, 1909, the son of Tyra and Celinda Belle McCollough Crane. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Wednesday, November 8, 1995 at the age of eighty-six years.

Ira was born on a farm west of Vail and received his education in a rural school near his home and graduated from the Vail High School with the class of 1926. After graduation, Ira worked as a farmhand.

At the age of twenty-one, he was united in marriage to Martha Lane of Storm Lake. The couple made their home on a farm west of Vail and were blessed with the birth of four children. Martha passed away in 1960 and Ira continued to farm the home place northwest of Vail until 1962.

In 1961, Ira was united in marriage to Lucille Smith and in 1962 they purchased a home in Vail.

Ira has noted many changes through the years. He had farmed in early years with a pair of workhorses and mules, later a 1939 John Deere as his first tractor. In his earlier years Ira worked on the crew helping to pave Highway 30. After moving into Vail, Ira worked for many years helping out on the Kenneth Hutchinson farm. He also was assistant to the County Assessor for several years, He was always one to help his community and church. He served on the Ar-We-Va School Board of Directors at the time they consolidated the three towns into one district, and also served on, the Vail City Council.

He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Vail and served as Elder in the past. He was a fifty year member of the Masonic Diamond Lodge and Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Vail Community Club.

Ira was a great fan of baseball and played the game until he was forty years old, playing on a four-team league in the area. He also enjoyed socializing in a game of cards with the neighbors. He enjoyed painting and painted The Last Supper picture for each of his daughters. Woodworking was another of his hobbies. Ira entered the Manilla Manor in April of 1994.

Ira was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha; one son, James in infancy, one daughter, Amy Belle Meyer, three brothers, Les, Robert and John Crane. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Crane of Manilla; two daughters, Eva Mae Chamberlain of Tucson, Arizona; Anna Marie Olson and her husband, Henry of Irwin; one son-in-law, Don Meyer and his wife, Jolene of Carroll, eight grandchildren and four foster granddaughters; five great-grandchildren and four foster great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Boham of Council Bluffs and Lois Petska of Hershey, Nebraska; also one sister-in-law, Betty Crane of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, November 11, 1995 at the Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa with Rev. Thomas Buzbee officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Vail Cemetery. Kevin Freese provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Glenn Freese singing "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden". A Masonic Service was held at 7.30 p.m., Friday, November 10, 1995 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Honorary Pallbearers were: Kenneth Hutchinson and Larry Meyer. Those serving as pallbearers were: Roger Podey, Jack Boham, Larry Petska, Joe Thelen, Bill Crane and Jim Meyer. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service and grave side rites to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch, served by the Presbyterian Women.

Irene Nellie (Krohnke) Johannsen (1905 - 2000)

Irene Nellie Johannsen, the daughter of George and Anna (Tech) Krohnke, was born March 19, 1905, in Ricketts, Iowa. She was baptized on April 23, 1905, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, Iowa and was confirmed on June 30, 1921, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Irene attended Woodbury and Crawford County rural schools and Schleswig High School.

She married Wilbert Johannsen on January 12, 1926, in Schleswig. Three children, Shirley, Ken, and Roger, were born to this union. Wilbert and Irene farmed for more than 30 years before moving to their new home in Schleswig in 1956. Wilbert died on February 15, 1983, in Des Moines, Iowa. Irene remained in her home in Schleswig until July, 1998, when she became a resident of the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa.

Irene was a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, where she had attended Bible classes regularly. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society for over 60 years, and held various offices through the years. Irene was a charter member of the VFW Post #3930 Auxiliary in Schleswig. She was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed the piano and organ. She loved to bake for family and friends.

Irene N. Johannsen died on Monday, November 27, 2000, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, having reached the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 8 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbert; four brothers, Erhart, Walter, Wayne, and Jurgen, who was killed in action in Holland during World War II; two sisters, Violet Grell and infant Doris Krohnke; one stepbrother Cecil Phillips; and three grandchildren, Keith Johannsen, Len Johannsen, and infant Susan Johannsen.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Kellogg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Dr. Ken Johannsen and wife, Audrey, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Roger Johannsen and wife, LaJune of Audubon, Iowa; one half-brother, Everett Krohnke of Crescent Lake, Oregon; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 30, 2000, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa, with Pastor Merle F. Mahnken officiating. Serving as organist was Marlene Hight. Casket bearers were Jay Johannsen, Russ Johannsen, Mark Johannsen, Jess Johannsen, Seth Johannsen, and Joel Porsch. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.

Irene (Schultz) Miller (1909 - 1992)

Irene Miller, the daughter of Lois and Mary Huebner Schultz was born June 5th, 1909 in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She died Monday, February 3, 1992 at the Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 82 years.

Irene was baptized a Christian on June 27, 1909 and confirmed of the Lutheran faith on Aprial 13, 1924 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She received her education at St. Paul Lutheran School, graduating in 1924.

On Febraury 16, 1930, Irene was united in marriage to Herman Miller Jr. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm in Morgan Township and later bought a farm in Hanover Township. On February 4, 1986 Herman died and in the spring of that year, Irene moved to Schleswig.

She was employed by the Chain-O-Egg and Farmland Industries in Denison and was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 440. Irene was devoted to her church and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a member of their ladies aid, and a director oi the Walther League of St. Paul. Other organizations she maintained memberships in are the AAL and the Rickettes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herman, one brother Arthur and two sisters, Esther Rabe and Ellen Nemitz. Survivors include two sisters, Hattie Schmadeke of Schleswig and Elvera Moeller of Schleswig.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 7, 1992 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa with Rev. Hines officiating the service and grave side rites held in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Paul's Ladies Aid singing "Now the Light Has Gone Away" and for the congregation singing "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "Just As I Am, Without One Plea". Honorary Pallbearers were: St. Paul's Ladies Aid. Pallbearers were: Harlan Schmadeke, Warren Hennings, Marlowe Schultz, Mike Ashbrook, Matthew Moeller, John Moeller, Kevin Greene and John Beeck. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladles Aid. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Irma G. (Larson) Knief (1902 - 2004)

Irma G. Knief was born on a farm in Otter Creek Township, rural Deloit, Iowa, September 16, 1902, the daughter of Frank and Annie Meyers Larson. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She was raised on the farm and received her education in the Township No. 7 rural school near their home. In addition to helping at home she did domestic work for others in the area.

On February 1, 1922, Irma was united in marriage with Herman Knief at Omaha, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with three children, Cyrenus, Gloria and Marian. They made their home on the farm four miles south of Kiron where Irma was a busy homemaker and farmwife, assisting her husband in any way that was needed. During the harvest seasons Irma would assist the neighbors with feeding the threshing crews. Herman and Irma loved to dance and would often sponsor dances.

In 1944 they retired from the farm and moved to Kiron. Irma will be remembered by her family for her love of pets, baking, playing cards, having picnics and keeping an immaculate home. For many years Irma had a large garden and canned it's produce to share with family and friends. After over 70 years of marriage, Irma's beloved Herman died November 12, 1992.

Irma remained in her home in Kiron until November of 1999 when she moved to the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa. Irma died at the Care Center Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 2004, having been blessed with 101 years, 5 months and 16 days. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron.

Including her parents and husband, Irma was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Rudolph Larson, one sister, Edith Hawley, one great granddaughter, Melissa VanSickler, one daughter-in-law. Lois Knief and two sons-in-law. Bruce Bergren and Wayne Peterson.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include one son, Cyrenus Knief and wife, Jeannetta of Deloit, Iowa, Gloria and husband, Gene Bergman of Kiron, Iowa and Marian Peterson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, 7 grandchildren. 11 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday. March 5, 2004 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa with the Rev. Trish Underberg officiating. Music for the service included Jerry Peterman singing "On Eagles Wings" and the congregation singing "How Great Thou Art", "Come Lord Jesus" and "Children of The Heavenly Father". Margaret Ann Buller served as organist. Pallbearers were Ronnie Streck, Paul Schultz, Jim Lindstrom, Dennis Wellsandt, Ted L. Aldag and Charles Harm. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and a luncheon catered by Hy-Vee of Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was privileged to be selected to provide arrangements and services.

Irwin F. Kastner (1909 - 1991)

Irwin F. Kastner was born July 18, 1909, the son of Fred and Friedricka Petersen Kastner. He died Sunday, Sept. 15, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 82 years.

Irwin was born in Otter Creek Township, Iowa and was baptized a Christian May 10, 1910 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and on March 28, 1926, he was confirmed in the Christian faith at the Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa.

He received his education in the Otter Creek No. 5, where he graduated from the eighth grade. After completing his education, he remained on the family farm northeast of Schleswig.

On March 8, 1933, Irwin was united in marriage to Erna Schultz in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township and were blessed with the birth of five children. They settled on the family farm where they remained until their retirement in 1976 when they moved to Kiron.

Irwin was a devoted husband and loving father who worked hard throughout his life to provide for his family. After retiring, he occupied his time with his family, fishing and playing bingo in addition to other social events such as his grandsons tractor pulls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Roma Ernst, in October of 1988 and one grandson, Craig Allen Kastner in May of 1967.

Survivors include four sons: Loren "Doc" and his wife Shirley of Schleswig, Larry and his wife Dianna of Charter Oak, Lodean of Kiron, Lonnie Kastner and his wife Diane of Kiron and one daughter Leila Maack and her husband Larry of Charter Oak; also fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and one brother-in-law, Walter Ernst of Denison.

Funeral services were held on Wed., September 18, 1991 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig with Pastor James Schatz serving as the officiant of the service and grave side rites held in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jenssen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Barb Buffum singing "You Light Up My Life" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were Russell Mack, Kurt M. Kastner, Royce Maack, Cal Kastner, Tracy Kastner and Corey Kastner. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

Irwin Herman Bruhn (1909 - 2000)

Irwin Herman Bruhn was born May 16, 1909, the son of Peter and Marie Fick Bruhn. He died January 24, 2000 at his home in Denison at the age of ninety.

Irwin was baptized in Christ September 5, 1909 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and later confirmed there on April 13, 1924. Irwin received his education in a rural school near his home. On March 6, 1929.

He was united in marriage to Bernice Backhaus by Rev. Tirnhaber at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on the Bruhn family farm west of Ricketts, where Irwin farmed. Irwin and Bernice remained on the farm for fifty years. In 1978, the couple moved to Denison where he lived until the time of his death.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed his family very much. He always took pride in keeping the farm places looking their best. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and is a past member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak and St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; six brothers, Rudolph, Raymond, Leo, Louis, Herbert and Walter; three sisters, Hattie Hingst, Minnie Eyer and Hilda Brockman; one son-in-law, Orville Groth.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna Groth of Battle Creek, Iowa and one son, Larry Bruhn of Denison; four grandchildren, Ronald Groth and his wife, Jacqueline of Metamora, Illinois; Roger Groth and his wife, Phyllis of Battle Creek; Linda Clark and her husband, William of Omaha; Dianne Heuvelmans and her husband, David of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren, Robert and Rachel Groth of Metamora, Illinois; Joel, Jerry, David and Dennis Groth, all of Battle Creek; one brother-in-law, Harry Backhaus of Denison; one sister-in-law, Ella Hamann of Battle Creek; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Beautiful Savior", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Those serving as pallbearers were Wayne Harmening, Lauren Knutzen, David Bruhn, Curtis Bruhn, Dwayne Lee and Dale Bruhn. Huebner Funeral Home of Denison handled the arrangements. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.

James E. Howorth (1905 - 1988)

James E. Howorth was born on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Ia., May 14, 1905, the son of Issac Henry and Lucinda Downs Howorth. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in the rural and Denison Public Schools. Following his education and prior to his marriage, he was employed as a bus driver for the Hildreth Bus Lines, driving the Denison to Sioux City route.

On March 21, 1930, James was united in marriage with Ruby Wilken at the Methodist Parsonage in Denison. This union was blessed with two children, Donovan and Diane. James and Ruby made their home on a farm just south of Denison and James continued his employment with Hildreths for a short time. He then began his lifetime farming career, farming their home farm and his farm at Dow City. He retired in 1967 and they continued to reside on the farm until moving to their present home in Denison in 1976.

James died June 3, 1988, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Neb. At the time of his death he reached the age of 83 years and 19 days. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison having held his membership there since his baptism in Black Hawk Lake at the age of 14. He was also a member of the former Crawford County Saddle Club.

Including his parents, James was preceded in death by one brother, Edmund Howorth; and two sisters, Marie Mason and Lulu Howorth who died in infancy.

Survivors are his wife, Ruby Howorth of Denison; one son and his wife, Donovan and Evelyn Howorth of Ashland, Neb.; one daughter and her husband, Diane and Bill McAninch of Denison; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sarah Howorth of Sioux City. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., June 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison with Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Arlene Stansbury singing "Beyond the Sunset" and the congregation singing "In The Garden." Nancy Miles served as organist. Honorary bearers included Louie Ahart, Lloyd Smith, Joe Coleman, and Jerry Coleman. Pallbearers were Howard Kremin, Les Brown, Rovanis Preul, Dennis Bergstadt, Virgil Walde and Lyell Nelson. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Jess Leland Jenkins (1903 - 1995)

Jess Leland Jenkins was born December 9, 1903, the son of William and Mary Holcomb Jenkins. He died on Tuesday, June 20, 1995 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-one years.

Jess was born on a farm near Dunlap and received his education in a rural school near his home. After receiving his education he helped on the family farm.

In 1939 Jess began farming near Kiron until retiring in 1969 to Denison. He was especially fond of raising livestock. Jess moved to the Eventide Nursing Home in September of 1993.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Layrette, Eugene, Ancil and Rule. Survivors" include one sister, Helen Lyman of Newell, Iowa, two brothers, Wilbert Jenkins and his wife, Marcella of Storm Lake and Romanan Jenkins and his wife, Evelyn of Kiron; two sisters-in-law, Edith Jenkins of Woodbine and JoAnne Jenkins of Denison; also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 1995 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with Elder Bryce Argotsinger officiating the service and grave side rites held at the Dow City Cemetery in Dow City, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary pallbearers were: Sharon Baker, Rena Skarin, Jackie Beam and Kay Miller. Pallbearers were: Dennis Jenkins, Mitch Lymann, David Jenkins Dale Jenkins, Jack Jenkins and Jim Jenkins. A lunch was served at Brasel Hall in Dow City, by the Women's Dept. of the Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints to those in attendance at the service and grave side rites. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Joe F. Bauman (1905 - 1992)

Joe F. Bauman was born July 15, 1905, the son of Joseph and Nellie Hassett Bauman. He died on Friday, Dec. 25, 1992 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 87 years.

Joe was born on a farm near Denison and received his education in a rural school near his home, north of Buck Grove. After receiving his education, he began his farming career in Crawford County, and retired in 1964.

On Nov. 10, 1964, Joe was united in marriage to Hilda Bissen. The couple settled in Buck Grove where Joe was employed at the local bar until 1974.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a kind man who regarded everyone as a friend and was willing to help anyone in need. He enjoyed a game of cards.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Raymond, one sister Nellie Bauman and one grandson.

Survivors include his wife Hilda of Denison; and one son, Urban Katzer and his wife Dorothy of Denison. Also four grandchildren, eight great-grandsons and one sister Mary Duncan of Denison.

Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1992 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa with Fr. John Cain and Fr. Andrew Hoffmann as Celebrants of the Mass with interment at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Church Choir. A Wake Service was held at 7:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8:15 p.m., Monday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Pallbearers were Michael Fitzpatrick, James Duncan, Vernon Greder, Louie Duncan, Gene Katzer and Lynn Katzer.

Johannes Gosch (1903 - 1984)

Johannes Gosch was born on Feb. 12, 1903 in Ellingstadt, Germany, the son of Heinrich and Emma Hagge Gosch. He died Sept. 4, 1984, at the Crawforcd County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 81.

Johannes was raised and educated in Germany. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Christian faith. In 1922 he came to the United States making his home in Crawford County in the area of Schleswig. Later in 1924. he purchased the blacksmith shop in Schleswig.

On June 11, 1925, Johannes was united in marriage to Anna Kuchlenz in Schleswig. Together they made their home in Schleswig where Johannes operated his business. In addition to his blacksmith shop, Johannes established an implement business in 1934. After his retirement in 1968, they continued to make their home in Schleswig.

Johannes was a member of the United Church of Christ, the Mid West Farm, Equipment Association, the Schleswig Community Club and Businessmens Club. He served on the Schleswig City Council.

In addition to his parents, Johannes was preceded in death by two brothers, Claus and William and one sister Emma.

Survivors include his wife Anna of Schleswig, one daughter Emmogene and her husband Charles Evers of Schleswig, one granddaughter Sandy and her husband Neil Sharpe of Bishopton, Scotland and by two sisters, Catharine Hoist of Schleswig and Gretha Brumm of Germany.

Funeral services were held Sept. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Music included, Mrs. Dorothy Jessen as organist with Barb Buffum and Pam Gronau as soloists. Hymns were How Great Thou Art and What A Friend We Have In Jesus. Pallbearers were Ray R. Miller, Larry Beeck, Harold Riessen, Harry Riessen, Ray Peper and E.W. Claussen. Honorary pallbearers were Herbert Miller, Hugo Dahms, Leonard Hollander, Robert Lyon, Broder Petersen, Claus Claussen, William Wollenhaupt, Richard Dorale and Byrdn Behrmann. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Johann F. Carstensen (1906 - 1993)

Johann F. Carstensen was born January 28, 1906, the son of Jens and Margaretha Petersen Carstensen. He died at his home near Ida Grove, Iowa on Monday, June 14, 1993 at the age of eighty-seven years.

Johann was born in Ostbordelum, Germany and was baptized and confirmed in Christ there. He received his education in Germany and subsequently farmed with his father. In 1930, he moved to America with his family and worked on farms for two years.

In 1932, Johann farmed near Deloit, Westside, Manning, Arthur and Schleswig with his brother, Hans and sister, Lena. In 1947, they bought the farm eight miles north east of Schleswig and remained there until the time of his death. Johann was a kind and considerate man, and loving brother whose Christian faith was evident in his character. He enjoyed working and was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include three brothers, Hans, Carsten, and Friedrich and his wife, Elsie, all of Ida Grove; and three sisters, Lena and Inge of Ida Grove and Anna Harder of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 1993 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. James Schatz officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Evelyn Johnson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Nancy Krueger singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Take Thou My Hand and Lead Me". Pallbearers were: Jens Peter Carstensen, Wayne Schroeder, Merle Lansink, Thomas Senhen, Grover Senhen and Dave Nemitz. The Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

John A. Meggers (1904 - 1976)

John A. Meggers, Denison, son of Frank and Dora Helmday Meggers, was born Aug. 14, 1904, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 9, 1976 at the age of 71 years, six months and 25 days.

Mr. Meggers was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended rural school. Upon finishing school he farmed in Hanover Township.

On Nov. 29, 1933, he was united marriage to Amanda Brensel of Denison at the Lutheran parsonage by Pastor William Frehse. They settled on the home farm in Hanover Township, where they continued to live until Mr. Meggers retired in April 1963, due to ill health, at which time they moved to Denison. After retiring he did some carpentry work and repaired furniture in and around Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Julius and one sister Anna.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda, one brother, Harry of Denison, and one sister, Mrs. Lillian Listamann of Denison, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 11, in the Zion Lutheran church, Denison, with Rev. Robert Maschk officiating. Pallbearers were Donald Listamann, Delaine Listamann, Walter Listamann, Wayne Brensel, Robert Kropf and LeRoy Brensel. Interment was made in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John A. Suhr (1907 - 1983)

Mr. John A. (Jack) Suhr of Kingsley, Iowa, died at his home on Sunday, May 29, 1983, at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Mr. Suhr was born the son of John and Elvina (Winkler) Suhr at rural Denison, Iowa, on April 7, 1907.

He was united in marriage to Marie Otto on March 22, 1927, at Carroll, Iowa. They lived in the Denison and Schleswig communities for many years where he was self-employed as an auto mechanic. Two months ago, he moved from Schleswig to Kingsley.

Survivors include his Wife, Marie; two sons, Kenneth of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and John H. of Sioux City, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Hanss of Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Private family funeral services were held at the Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley on Wednesday, June 1, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Walter Resner, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Kingsley, officiating. The casket bearers were Bill Amundson Jr., Jeffrey Gaskell and Joel Van Meter. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery, rural Schleswig,

John Brown Lass (1906 - 1981)

John Brown Lass was born on May 16, 1906 at Denison, Iowa, the son of George and Cora Brown Lass. He died March 19, 1981 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison at the age of 74.

John grew up with his twin sister on the farm of an uncle near Denison, as his mother died during child birth. He received his formal education in the Denison Public Schools.

After the completion of his education, John was employed by several farmers in the area. Later he was employed by his cousin Jens Lass on a farm east of Denison. His work with his cousin lead John to make the Lass farm his permanent home. In January of 1980, John left the farm and became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

John was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, his twin sister, Mrs. Adora Podey of Denison, neices, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held March 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, near Denison. The Rev. Larry Davis officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Jeff Bauer, Roger Bukacek, Clet Lickteig, Fred Podey, Larry Luvaas and Louis Luvaas. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

John Carl Holst (1906 - 1977)

John Carl Holst was born on April 25, 1906, at Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Johannes and Annie Holst. He died on April 2, 1977, at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 70.

John was raised on the family farm and received his education in the rural school in the Schleswig area. As a young man, he was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He farmed with his father, and after his death continued to operate the farm with his mother until he retired in 1963 moving to Schleswig. John served in the United States Army during World War II for three years.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: two aunts, Mrs. Alvena Evers and Miss Tina Holst both of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 5, 1977, at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa, with Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Malinda Evers, Evelyn Johnson and Jeanette Grell provided the music with songs of praise, "Just As I Am", and "Nearer My God to Thee". Pallbearers were Edgar Meseck, Gary Meseck, Clarence Reincke, Ed Schmadeke, Herb Wellendorf and Robert Vittitoe. Burial was made in Morgan Cemetery.

John Donald Champion (1908 - 1997)

John Donald Champion was born June 5, 1908, the son of John and Margaret Malony Champion. He died Friday, January 3, 1997 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of eighty-eight.

Don was born in Vail, Iowa and received his elementary and high school education at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Denison and Creighton University. After completing his education, Don returned to the Crawford County area, where he farmed south of Denison.

On September 5, 1933, Don was united in marriage to Viola Steckelberg in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Omaha for one year, before moving to a farm south of Denison, living there for several years, before moving to Denison. Don was employed by the Denison Utilities as a lineman and a meter reader, until his retirement in 1973 and was a volunteer fireman for many years.

Don was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. He was a very loving husband, caring father and grandfather, who in his leisure time enjoyed socializing and dancing in the big band era.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola, in 1988, one son, James, one grandson, one brother, Matthew and daughter-in-law Nancy.

Survivors include two sons, John and his wife, Donella of Winchester, Virginia; Michael and his wife Janice of Norfolk, Nebraska; one daughter, Marilyn of Winchester, Virginia; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 7, 1996 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Andrew Hoffman served as Celebrant with interment at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir singing "Amazing Grace" and selected songs. Those serving as pallbearers were: Craig Gregersen, Robert Curnyn, David Duncan, Randy Hass, Jon Champion and Tom Jones. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4 p.m. and a Parish Wake Service at 7 p.m., Monday, January 6, 1996 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for lunch at the Parish Center, served by the St. Rose Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

John Dorfler (1909 - 1997)

John Dorfler was born on a farm in Soldier Township near Ricketts, Iowa March 18, 1909, the son of John and Edith Meyer Dorfler. He was raised on the farm and attended the Soldier #6 rural school before being graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the Class of 1929. He then furthered his education attending the University of Iowa in Iowa City for two years, returning home to farm in 1931.

On February 6, 1935, John was united in marriage with Erma Peters at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one son, John M. Dorfler. They made their home on his grandfather's farm north of Ricketts where they have resided the past 62 years.

John was a well known cattle feeder shipping cattle to Chicago, Sioux City and Omaha, Nebraska, being awarded a 50 year Pioneer Patron Award from the Omaha Stockyards. He enjoyed his antique machinery, entering it in area antique parades and was active in the Ricketts Steam Show in the 1970's. In 1977 he and Erma performed at the Iowa State Fair and received an award for Artistic Talent and Ability in the performing arts from the State of Iowa Commission On Aging.

In recent years the Dorfler's farm was awarded the designation of being a Century Farm for continuous ownership in the same family for 100 years.

John had been in failing health the past three years but continued an active interest in the farm and was lovingly cared for at home by his wife Erma. John died at his farm home north of Ricketts, Iowa, Monday evening, June 16, 1997. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 88 years, 2 months and 28 days.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison and in earlier years was active in the Shrine and the Live Oaks Masonic Lodge in Charter Oak.

Including his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Franklin Dorfler and one brother in infancy.

Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Erma Dorfler of rural Ricketts, Iowa, one son, John M. Dorfler and his wife, Lois of Charter Oak, Iowa, two grandsons, John Andrew Dorfler and his wife, Darci of Sioux City, Iowa and James M. Dorfler of West Bend, Wisconsin, one great-granddaughter, Megan Joy Dorfler of Sioux City, Iowa, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 20, 1997 at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Thomas S. Buzbee officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Casket bearers included Kenny Martin, Orville Riessen, Beryl Garrett, Vernon Rabe, Steve Garrett, and William Hagerdon. Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery at Charter Oak, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

John F. Gottburg (1903 - 1976)

John F. Gottburg, 73, 917 10th St., Sioux City, a retired embalmer and funeral director, died Friday, December 17 (1976) at a Sioux City Hospital. He had suffered a heart attack December 11.

Mr. Gottburg was born October 7, 1903 at Schleswig, Iowa. He moved to Sioux City in the early 1920s, taking his apprenticeship with N. Nelson, , a Sioux City funeral director.

Mr. Gottburg returned in 1925 to Schleswig where he went into partnership with his father, Claus Gottburg, in a funeral home. Mr. Gottburg also operated a dry cleaning establishment at Schleswig.

He sold the funeral home in 1947 to A. J. Sinn and moved to Colorado. He returned to Sioux City in 1950 and was employed by Nelson-Berger Funeral Homes until his retirement in 1965.

Mr. Gottburg married Bertha A. Ochs December 30, 1930, at Schleswig. She died in 1970 in Sioux City. He married Lucile Swanson Frink December 29, 1971, in Sioux City. Mr. Gottburg attended Whitfield United Methodist Church.

Survivors include the widow; a son, Richard of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. William (Frieda) Kopp and Mrs. John (Mabel) Schoen, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, December 20, at 1 p.m. at the Nelson Berger Northside Funeral Chapel in Sioux City. The Rev. Robert Crandall of Whitfield United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig, Iowa.

Pallbearers were Andy Phillips. Rich Norton, Greg Van Cleave, Chuck Ashlock, Bruce Hecke and Mark Roth. A memorial is being established in Mr. Gottburg's name at the Whitfield United Methodist Church.

John Friedrich Kahl (1904 - 1980)

John Friedrich Kahl was born on Oct. 2, 1904 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County. The son of John and Margarita Ploog Kahl. He died on Dec. 28, 1980 at Bergan Mercy Hospital, Omaha, Neb. at the age of 76.

John was raised on a family farm in Crawford County. He received his early education in the rural schools near his home. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He farmed for a time before entering the U.S. Navy serving during World War II.

Upon his release from the military he returned to Crawford County where he farmed for many years. Later he was employed in Ida Grove retiring in 1972 when he moved to Omaha, Neb. Since that time he has continued to make Omaha his home.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include: one brother William of Arion, a number of nieces and nephews and a close friend Beulah Schaller of Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1980 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral home, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack Heck of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the services. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

John Leo Fitzpatrick (1907 - 2001)

John Leo Fitzpatrick was born July 24, 1907, the son of John and Mary Behen Fitzpatrick. He died November 9, 2001 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of ninety-four.

Leo was born in Denison and received his elementary education in a country school and graduated from St. Rose of Lima Catholic High School in 1927. After his graduation, Leo began farming.

He was united in marriage to Madonna Scanlan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla, Iowa. The couple fanned until Madonna passed away in 1963.

In 1966, he was united in marriage to Esther Blackman at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dow City. Leo and Esther continued to farm until he reluctantly retired in 1990 at the age of eighty-three and moved to Denison.

Leo loved fanning, especially caring for his livestock. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends. He was a very loving husband, brother and uncle, who served as a strong advisor to all of his very special nieces and nephews, always giving advice and guidance.

On his eightieth birthday, each of his nieces and nephews came from coast to coast to surprise him and celebrate the occasion. He was a lifetime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, and was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Colombus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Madonna; two sisters, Luverne Petersen and Elizabeth Cortright, and one brother, Joseph.

Survivors include his loving wife, Esther of Denison; one brother, Emmett of Denison; one sister-in-law, Regina Fitzpatrick of Dunlap, Iowa; many very special nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 11, 2001, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Fr. Edward Murray serving as Celebrant of the Mass and grave side rites at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Sunday Prayer Services included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 4:00 p.m., a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home in Denison. Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Those serving as pallbearers were: Kenneth Fitzpatrick, Joe Ray Fitzpatrick, Kevan Cortright, John Fitzpatrick, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Stevan Cortright, and Jim Fitzpatrick. The family invited everyone in attendance to a fellowship luncheon at the Parish Center served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

John Lorenz (1904 - 1987)

John Lorenz was born at Linden, Holstein, Germany, Sept. 1, 1904, the son of Peter and Maria Forbeck Lorenz. He was baptized in Germany where he was raised and received his education.

In 1925, John came to the United States and settled in Crawford County. For many years he was employed by farmers in the Schleswig area and for ten years was employed with the railroad, working on the bridge gang. Also during the years he was employed as a bartender in Schleswig and Denison.

For the past several years, John had resided at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where his death occurred Tuesday afternoon, Dec., 29, 1987. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 83 years, three months and 28 days.

Some of John's interest during his life included watching most sports, especially baseball, and for many years he was on a bowling team in Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents. John is survived by one brother, Ernest Lorenz of Petaluma, Calif.; two nieces; and good friends, Howard and Charlene Iversen of Vail.

Mr. Lorenz was cremated and his ashes will be interred at a later date in the Morgan Township Cemetery at Schleswig. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3, 1988, at Eventide Lutheran Homes's chapel in Denison with the Rev. Richard E. Nelson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Edmund Haase singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Be Still My Soul" with Karen Kahl serving as organist. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
