Paul Max Schneider (1920 - 1970)

Paul Schneider Died Suddenly; Funeral Monday

Funeral services for Paul M. Schneider were held at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts on Monday, June 1, 1970. Words of comfort were given by Rev. F. A. Wiese. Mrs. Loren Lee was organist and the congregation sang the hymns "Nearer My God To Thee" and "There is An Hour of Peaceful Rest".

Paul Max Schneider, son of Paul Schneider and Emma nee Quandt, was born at Denison March 19, 1920. He grew up in the Denison Community. He was married on April 16, 1941 to Jeanetta Trulsen. The couple farmed in the Denison community. In 1950, they moved to the home place 3 miles north of Ricketts. He unexpectedly died there at his home on Friday afternoon May 29th. In addition to farming his own place, he did custom work for a number of farmers, and also ran a repair shop on his farm.

He was a life long member of the Lutheran Church. He held membership at St. Luke's for 15 years where he was a member of the Voters' Assembly and at the time of his death was serving his second term as elder of the Church.

He is survived by his wife Jeanetta; seven children: Durene, wife of Francis Krohnke of Schleswig; David of Omaha; Diane, wife of Paul Nockels of Blair, Nebr.; Duane of Ricketts; Daniel of Denison; Donna, wife of Roy Osterlund of Denison, and Debra at home. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; his mother Mrs. Paul Schneider of Denison; two brothers Martin and Herman of Denison; two sisters: Rose Mae Schnellor of Denison and Emmy Riessen of Schleswig. He attained 50 years, 2 months, and 10 days.

Pallbearers were Walter Bugge, Wilbert Langholdt, John Lantz, William Reimers, Clarence Wiese and Kenneth Windsor. Interment was in the Morgan Township Cemetery.

Paul Moritz Jensen (1882 - 1961)

Paul Moritz Jensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Moritz Jensen, was born April 28, 1882, in Elmdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran church. He came to America in 1909 making his home in Mapleton.

He was married to Amelia Christiansen on March 15, 1911 and to this marriage four children were born. After farming on various farms in Crawford County, they moved to the present Jensen farm south of Denison.

Mrs. Jensen died on April 26, 1960. Mr. Jensen died at the Rose Christiansen home in Denison on Oct. 16 (1961).

Surviving are four children: Meinert Jensen of Ricketts, Herbert of Denison, Mrs. Helen Wiegel of Charter Oak and Carl Jensen of Omaha. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, six brothers and one sister in Germany.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 18 at the Huebner Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl W. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were: Earnest Miller, Jr., Allan Johnson, Fritz Strissel, William Mullenger, Jr., Bill Ehlers and Chris Hansen, Jr.

Paul Schoening (1890 - 1962)

Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 6 (1962), at Christ Lutheran church at Norfolk, Neb., for Paul Schoening with the Rev. A. T. Bostelman officiating. Interment was at the Lutheran cemetery at Norfolk.

He was the son of John and Mary Arndt Schoening. He was born in Denison township, Crawford County on June 23, 1890. He was married to Minnie Burmeister to which union one son, Vernon was born. His wife passed away early in life, and later he married Elsie Rath. This union was blessed with two children, Maxine and Merlyn.

He farmed for some time, and about 35 years ago entered the banking business. He worked at various banks in western Iowa, and later in the bank at Battle Creek, Neb. In March of this year he moved to Norfolk, Neb., and was employed at the Delay Drive-In Bank there at the time of his death.

He was taken to the Methodist hospital in Omaha Tuesday night. His condition became worse on Thursday, and he died that evening at the age of 72 years.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two half-brothers. Surviving are his wife, and three children, Vernon of Schaller, Merlyn of Norfolk, Neb., and Maxine, Mrs. Robert Wyant of Sioux Falls, S.D., seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. A. L. Lueth of Manilla and a half brother, Albert Poleske of Denison.

Pallbearers were B. M. Delay, Paul Zutz, Elmer Doering, William Prauner, Alvin Koopman and Nels Anderson.

Paul Henry Thomsen (1909 - 1973)

Paul Henry Thomsen, son of Henry and Ida Mundt Thomsen was born in Crawford County, Iowa, June 21, 1909 and passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Sunday, April 8, 1973 having attained the age of 63 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Mr. Thomsen was born and raised on the farm and attended rural and Lutheran schools. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On Sept. 15, 1931 he was united in marriage to Elsie Popken of Denison at Blair, Neb. They were blessed with one daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Thomsen made their home in Denison for a short time before moving to a farm near Denison. In 1949 they moved to California for two years before returning to the farm near Denison where they lived until retiring to Denison in 1970. Mr. Thomsen served as president of the Crawford County National Farmers Organization for five years and was collection point representative for NFO since retiring from the farm.

He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife Elsie, daughter Joan, Mrs. Benjamin Cheshire and her husband; three grandchildren, Paul Thomas, Lori Joan and Benjamin Harris Jr. of Doylestown, Pa., his mother, Mrs. Ida Thomsen of Denison, two brothers, Fritz of Vail and Walter of Bountiful, Utah; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison at 2 p.m. April 10, 1973 with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Fred Rabe, organist with soloist Henry Henningsen singing "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and "The Old Rugged Cross." The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have in Jesus."

Interment was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens with the following serving as pallbearers: Virgil Boeck, Edmund Haase, Leslie Rath, Joseph Griffin, Vernon Neumann and Raymond Rubert. Huebner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Pearl (Riddle) Bryan (1884 - 1971)

Pearl Riddle, daughter of Edmund and Anna (Busby) Riddle, was born on a farm near Dow City, Iowa, on June 16, 1884 and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on December 19, 1971, at the age of 87 years.

She received her education in the Dow City school system, graduating from high school in 1902. After attending Iowa State Teachers' College at Cedar Falls she taught school for five years at Corwith and Dow City.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Bryan on June 16, 1907 at Dow City. To this union were born eight children: Harold of Western Springs, Ill.; Glenn and Elmore of Chicago; Mrs. Clarence Greene of Knoke, Iowa; Mrs. Robert Schomer (Mildred) of Panama, Iowa; Mrs. Hilton Fredricks (Frances) of Ackley, Iowa; and Cliff and Sam Bryan of Denison.

In 1936 Mr. and Mrs. Bryan moved to Denison after farming for 27 years. She was preceded in death by a sister, Clara, who died in infancy; two brothers, Elmer E. and Norman J. Riddle, and her husband who died in 1962.

Besides her children she is survived by one sister, Alma Bremser of Dow City; twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren. She was a life long member of the Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 21, 1971, at the United Methodist Church in Denison with the Rev. Jerold L. Irvin officiating. Burial was at the Dow City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Bryan, Bruce Bryan, Richard Bryan, Howard Bryan, Lynn Rollins, and Harold Greene.

Peter C. Petersen (1898 - 1976)

Peter C. Petersen, son of Paul and Katherine Lorenzen Petersen, was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, April 7, 1898 and died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Thursday, March 4, 1976 having attained the age of 77 years, 10 months and 26 days.

In 1911 after the death of his father he came to the United States with his mother, one sister Lucie and one brother Barney, they made their home in Denison. Mr. Petersen worked on farms in the Denison vicinity and served in the Armed Forces in World War II. He retired to Denison where he was living at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Barney, three step-brothers, Carl, Paul and Johannes, one sister and four step-sisters, Mina, Emma, Sena and Lena.

Survivors include two step-sisters, Mahala, Mrs. August Patersen of Denison and Mrs. Bertha Stone of Cedar Rapids, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Pastor Robert Maschke officiating. Vocal selections were "Rock of Ages" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Wernes Dethmann, Roy Dethmann, Leonard Klink, Bernhard Petersen, Earl Foster, Merlin Maack and Lawrence Wordekemper. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.

Peter George Jacobsen (1891 - 1969)

Services for Peter George Jacobsen were conducted Monday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ by the Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff. Mr. Jacobsen passed away on Friday, October 10, 1969, at Omaha at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 6 days. Mr. Jacobsen was the son of Johannes Jacobsen and Elisa (Detlefsen) Jacobsen. Interment took place at Morgan Cemetery.

Mrs. John Evers served as the organist at the service with Mrs. Harlan Bumann and Mrs. Don Meyer singing the two hymns, "Abide With Me", and "The Lord Is My Shepherd."

Mr. Jacobsen had farmed in the Schleswig area, and was a resident of the community for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War I. On December 18, 1938 he was married to Nora Moltman at Ida Grove.

Mrs. Jacobsen preceded her husband in death in 1964 as did three of his sisters and one brother. He is survived by three daughters, Wanda, Mrs. A. G. Carstens of Galva; Leona, Mrs. Ed Ehlers of Schleswig; Anna, Mrs. Ed Wallace of Emerson; one son, Wm. Hamann of Oto; four grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. H. J. Rehse of Ida Grove.

Mr. Jacobsen was a member of the United Church of Christ. Members of the Military, V.F.W. and American Legion served as pallbearers.

Thomas Ralph Igou (1899 - 1983)

Thomas Ralph Igou was born on Feb. 8, 1899 near Buck Grove, Iowa, the son of George and Rebecca Durkin Igou. He died on Oct. 24, 1983 at his home in Denison at the age of 84.

Ralph moved with his family while still a small boy to a farm near Dow City. It was there that he received his formal education in the rural schools near his home.

On Nov. 1, 1919, Ralph was united in marriage to Josephine Munsey at Omaha, Neb. They were blessed with a baby girl on April 9, 1928. Ralph drove a school route for thirty-five years, starting with a team hack. He also operated a service station for twenty-five years. In 1959 he joined the Crawford County Weed Department. Later he became the Weed Commissioner a position he held for fifteen years prior to his retirement in 1976.

While making their home on a farm in rural Arion, Josephine died in 1978. For the past number of years, Ralph has made his home in Denison, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, and his wife, Ralph was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers, a half brother and by his step mother Susie Poole.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruth, Mrs. Edgar Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, two grandchildren, Dennis Kuhlmann and his wife Rita of Dow City, and Diane, Mrs. Darrell Peterson of Cedar Rapids and by four great grandchildren, Check, DeeDee, Mike and Matt. Also surviving is one brother, Walter Igou of Ortonville, Minn., two half brothers, Albert Igou of Denison and Lawrence Igou of Monmouth, Ore., one half sister, Garnet, Mrs. Mark Powell of Wallace, S.C. and a special friend, Irene Hansen of Denison.

Funeral services were held Oct. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Denison. Burial was in the Dow City Cemetery near Dow City. The Rev. Warren Wilson officiated at the services. Mrs. Petersen served as organist with Mrs. James Muff as soloist. Hymns for the service included, How Great Thou Art and The Old Rugged Cross. Pallbearers were Gene Harre, Don Bartlett, Wayne Igou, Bryce Cross, Dennis DeMey, and Mark Brassel. Honorary bearers were Jack Holst, Les Cue, Fred McClellan, Charles J. Smith, Louis Ahart and Leland Ackley. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Ralph C. H. Koepke (1905 - 1969)

Military Services For Ralph Koepke Wednesday, June 4 (1969)

Ralph C. H. Koepke, son of the late Ferdinand and Anna Koepke was born on a farm in Monona County near Mapleton on January 1, 1905. He was baptized in infancy in the Lutheran Church. He attended rural schools and moved to Schleswig where he resided with his parents until their death.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 and received a medical discharge in 1943. He was a member of the American Legion Post 645 at Schleswig. He operated his own business in Schleswig for nine years before moving to Ida Grove in 1952 and was employed by the Coil Machine Shop for eleven years. He retired in 1965 because of poor health.

Ralph was married July 3, 1964 to Myrtle Mason of Ida Grove.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; four sisters: Clara, Mrs. Earl Tiede of Pocahontas, Lucille, Mrs. Melvin Sindt, and Vallee, Mrs. J.R. Coil, both of Ida Grove, Luren, Mrs. Walter Jurek of Lindsay, California; and one brother Henry of Vallejo, California; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services were held in the Christensen Funeral Home on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. officiated by Rev. W. L. Feller. The military service was conducted by the American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig.

Rev. Dr. Ralph J. Ratzlaff (1932 - 1985)

Rev. Dr. Ralph J. Ratzlaff, 52, former pastor of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig from 1964 till 1975, died Friday, February 22, 1985, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He was born October 6, 1932, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Edwin and Martha (Kannenberg) Ratzlaff. On September 11, 1954, he married Marilyn Ruth Schmidt.

Rev. Ratzlaff attended elementary school and graduated from high school in Milwaukee. He graduated in 1956 from Elmhurst College. He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Eden Seminary in 1959 and a Master of Divinity degree from Eden in 1969. From 1959 till 1964 he was pastor of First United Church of Christ in Watertown, Wisconsin. From 1964 to 1975, he served as pastor of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. From 1980 until his death, he served as pastor of the Covenant Church in Chelsea, Michigan.

In addition, he was an instructor in Philosophy in Midwestern College in Denison from 1970 to 1971 and he received a certificate of secondary education from Parsons College in 1971. Also in 1971, he received from the University of South Dakota an individualized instruction course. In 1976 he attended the Institute of Gerontology at University of Michigan. In 1978 he attended the Institute for Advanced Pastoral Care conflict management seminar and the Oakland County Health Care Seminar - management health care in 1979.

Rev. Ratzlaff was a licensed nursing home administrator. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the United Church Homes of Michigan. He was a former board member of the Washtenaw Community Services. He was a former member of the Regional Health Planning Council in Iowa for three and one-half years. He was a member of the church and ministry committee of the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ. He received as honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1970 and was listed in Personalities of the West and Midwest in 1975 and also in Who's Who in Religion in 1977.

Ray Evers (? - 1985)

June 22, 1985

Ray Evers of Dakota City, Neb., formerly of Arion, died Thursday afternoon at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church in Dakota City with graveside rites to follow at Crawford Heights Memory Garden in Denison. Visitation is at the Jack Becker Funeral Home in South Sioux City, Neb. Saturday and Sunday evenings. Memorials may be sent to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for research of lung disease and Salem Lutheran Church.

Evers is survived by his wife, DeLoris; four daughters, Linda (Mrs. John) Williams of Homer, Neb., Lana Evers and Lori Evers of South Sioux City, Neb., and Lisa at home; one grandchild; his mother, Louise Evers of Maurice; and a sister, Irene Cose of Maurice.

Raymond Carl Kluver (1916 - 1965)

Raymond Carl Kluver, son of Mrs. Jacob Kluver, and the late Mr. Kluver, was born at Charter Oak, February 28, 1916. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran church in Denison, the late Rev. W. Frese officiating, and confirmed in 1931 at the United Church in Schleswig. He received his early schooling in Schleswig.

He was married to Marcella Quandt and baptized into the Catholic faith by the Rev. A. Anmann at St. Boniface church December 30, 1940. The first year of the marriage was spent at Anthon. After nineteen years of residence on farms at Danbury and near Charter Oak, they moved to Ute in 1960. Mr. Kluver was employed at the Buenz and Son Hardware for about two years.

Christian Wake was observed at the Huebner Funeral home in Charter Oak Monday and Tuesday evenings. Requiem High Mass was sung at St. Boniface Catholic church Wednesday at ten o'clock. The Rev. R. E. Nommers officiated at the services. Randy and Verdean Kluver were Mass Servers and Allen Quandt of Carroll served as Cross Bearer. St. Boniface Choir sang.

Survivors are his wife, Marcella, sons Gerald, Jeffrey, Joel, John, Jonelle and daughters Julianne and Jolene employed at Omaha. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean, Sept. 29, 1941, and his father Jacob Kluver. A brother Albert and sisters Mrs. Wayne (Dorothy) Adanis of Galva and Mrs. Edwin (Velma) Jacoby of Denison and his mother, Mrs. Jacob Kluver of Ute also survive him.

Pallbearers were Dale Wittry, C. L. Flynn, Robert Springer, Harlan Theobald, Gale Carstens and Gary Lewis. Interment was made in St. Boniface cemetery.

Raymond (Bob) D. Creese (1913 - 1985)

Raymond (Bob) D. Creese was born on August 14, 1913, in Willow Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Herbert C. and Pacey Creese. He died Saturday evening, December 28, 1985, at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 72.

Bob spent his formative years on his family's farm in Crawford County. He received his formal education in the Willow Township School.

He was united in marriage to Donna Abbott on November 25, 1935, in Charter Oak. To this union five daughters and two sons were born. They made their home on a farm near Charter Oak. After retiring from farming in 1963, Bob owned and operated Bob's Recreation in Charter Oak until retirement in 1973, following which he moved to Mapleton. The past 20 years, Bob made his home with Lorraine Christiansen.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by one son Robert in infancy, four brothers LeRoy, Clifford, Bill and Percy, and a sister, Bessie Wilken.

Survivors include Lorraine Christiansen of Mapleton, five daughters, Doris Neddermeyer of Denison, Mary Ann, Mrs. LaDean Bechen of Schleswig, Betty Lou, Mrs. John Miller of Omaha, Peggy, Mrs. William Aldag of Ida Grove, and Phyllis, Mrs. Richard Kragel of Charter Oak; two sons, Mick of Colorado, and Bill of Ute, two stepsons, Kenneth Christiansen of Dow City, and Dean Christiansen of Ft. Worth, Texas, and one stepdaughter Lois Dean of Mapleton. He is further survived by twenty-five grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren, as well as nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 31, 1985, at 9:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak. Interment was in the Charter Oak Cemetery. The Rev. James Gubser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Carol Hunter served as organist for the services with Mr. Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art". Serving as pallbearers for the services were Gale Carstens, John Meggers, Jerry Bumstead, Lester Goslar, Ervin Kiepe and Adolph Schau.

Raymond Ehlers (1909 - 1988)

GALVA, Iowa - Raymond Ehlers, 78, of Galva, died Wednesday at the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein following a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Galva with the Rev. Todd Smelser officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.

Mr. Ehlers was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Crawford County, Iowa, where he attended rural schools. He moved to Holstein in 1930. He married Florence Scott on Dec. 25, 1935, at Holstein. The couple farmed at various places, retiring to Galva in 1966. He entered a nursing home in September 1987. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Galva; two sons, Darrell of Aurelia and Darwin of Holstein; a brother, John of Galva; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harvey.

Raymond Fred Henry Fredericks (1914 - 1978)

Raymond Fred Henry Fredericks was born June 5, 1914 at Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Marie Kiepe Fredericks. He died November 13, 1978 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, at the age of 64.

Raymond was raised in Hanover Township where he attended the rural schools as well as the Lutheran School in Denison. He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On September 29, 1940, Raymond was united in marriage to Dorothy Reincke at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Together they made their home on a farm in Hanover Township until 1959 when they moved to Denison where Raymond was employed. He retired in 1976 continuing to make his home in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Denison, two sons, Raymond, Jr. of Denison and Richard of Schleswig and nine grandchildren. Also by one brother, Harold of Deloit and four sisters, Elsie (Mrs. Walter Petersen) of Denison, Anna Fredericks of Denison, Lorena (Mrs. Rudolph Petersen) of Dow City and Bernice (Mrs. Clarence Suntken) of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held November 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Dale Meseck, Irwin Denker, Richard Kluver, Jeffery Suntken, Gene Petersen, and Glen Petersen. Honorary pallbearers were Alfred Petersen, Wilbur Harm, Irvin Harm, Art Boettger, Vincent Keating and Neal Moeller. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison.

Raymond H. Carstensen (1905 - 1985)

Raymond H. Carstensen was born on September 8, 1905, in Milford Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Hans and Cecelia Ohde Carstensen. He died Tuesday morning, January 8, 1985 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 79.

Raymond spent his formative years on a family farm in Milford Township. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home.

On May 16, 1926, he was united in marriage to the former Marie E. Berndt in Denison. Together they made their home on the Carstensen family farm. After retirement from farming in 1958, they moved into the Denison community. Raymond worked for several years as a bartender, and later as a member of the Denison police force. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by one brother Lawrence, and one sister Louise Saggau.

Survivors include his wife Marie of Denison, two daughters, Delphine Braase of Manilla Manor in Manilla, and Norma Smith of Minneapolis, Mn., and three sons, Raymond H.F. of Lawton, Okl., Vernon L. of Denison, and Robert E. of Marion, Ia. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 11, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Donald Fraker officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist, with Edmund Haase as soloist. Hymns for the services included How Great Thou Art, and Abide With Me.Grandsons serving as pallbearers were Dale Carstensen, David Carstensen, Dennis Carstensen, Dean Carstensen, Danny Carstensen, Tim Carstensen, and Alan Carstensen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Raymond "Sonny" H. F. Carstensen (1930 - 1986)

Raymond H. F. Carstensen was born on Dec. 19, 1930 in Denison, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Marie E. Berndt Carstensen Sr. He died on Oct. 27, 1986 at his home in Lawton, Okla., at the age of 55 years, ten months and 23 days.

Raymond spent his early years on a farm near Denison. He received his early childhood education in rural schools near Denison. On May 7, 1952 he entered the Army at Omaha, Nebr. and served during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on May 6, 1954.

Raymond was united in marriage to Erna Weltz in 1952 at Tucson, Ariz. After returning from the Army, Raymond went to work for a construction company and has worked in the building field for most of his years.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Carstensen Sr. on Jan. 8, 1983.

Survivors include, his mother Marie Carstensen of Denison. Five sons: Dale R. Carstensen and his wife Barbra of Denison; David A. Carstensen and his wife Barbra of Lawton, Okla.; Dennis R. Carstensen and his wife Marcy of Lawton, Okla.; Dean W. Carstensen of Lawton, Okla. and Dan R. Carstensen of Denison. Five grandchildren; two sisters; Delphine Braase of Manilla, and Norma Smith of Minneapolis, Minn. Two brothers; Vernon Carstensen of Denison and Robert E. Carstensen of Marion.

Funeral services were held Oct. 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services. Mrs. Fred Fabe served as organist. Serving as pallbearers were: Delaine Blunk, Robert Boehm, Edmund Haase, Donald M. Lilleholm, Vern Tech Sr. and Jerry Smith. Raymond Helmut Paul Riessen (1917 - 1980)

Raymond Helmut Paul Riessen was born the eldest son of George and Ella Erickson Riessen, June 8, 1917, on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa. He died Sunday evening, October 12, 1980, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison Iowa, having attained the age of 63 years, 4 months, and 4 days.

Raymond was raised on the farm near Schleswig and received his formal education at the local rural schools. At an early age he was baptized by Rev. W. R. Wetzelee and later confirmed by Rev. Kielhorn at the Evangelical Friedens Church in Schleswig.

On June 8, 1940, Raymond was united in marriage with Elvira Korner, at Charter Oak, Iowa. They made their home near Denison and for the past 35 years they have resided on their present farm at Route 2, Denison. Raymond farmed most of his life and for the past ten years he was employed as a truck driver with the Farm Service Coop in Denison. He also served for many years as a maintenance man at the Crawford County Fairgrounds helping prepare for the Crawford County Fair and any other function at the fairgrounds.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Elvira of Route 2, Denison, one daughter, Lois, Mrs. Alan Johnson of Deloit, two grandchildren, Mark and Michelle Johnson of Deloit, his parents George and Ella Riessen of the Manilla Manor at Manilla, four brothers, Orville Riessen of Charter Oak, Leonard Riessen of Vail, Milo Riessen and Arlo Riessen of Denison, two sisters, Florance, Mrs. Lawrence Griffin of Denison and Arlene, Mrs. Arlo Jahn of Denison, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, October 15, 1980, at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Mr. Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Dorothy Norman as Organist. Casket bearers included LaVerne Christiansen, Mike Friedrichsen, Bill Cullen, Arden Amman, Art Lutz, and Vernon Neuman. Burial was in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.

Reimer Gluesing (1865 - 1964)

Reimer Gluesing was born Jan. 16, 1865 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was the second child of Jurgen Gluesing and Elizabeth nee Claussen Gluesing. He passed away at his home in Denison on June 4, 1964.

At the age of four he came to America with his parents and lived in Clinton until his marriage. On Feb. 20, 1890 he was married to Sophia Grill and they came to Crawford county. They lived on their farm in Hanover township until March 1928 when they retired and moved to Denison. Mrs. Gluesing died in August 1931. The last few years Mr. Gluesing's daughter, Mrs. Leona Grill, has lived with him in his home.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gluesing. One daughter, Martha, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his sons, Alfred of Denison and Arthur of Ute, and his daughter, Mrs. Leona Grill of Denison. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, and one brother, Chris Gluesing of McHenry, N.D.

Pastor F. T. Lange of Ute officiated at the Huebner chapel on June 4 and interment took place at the Morgan township cemetery. Pallbearers were William Eggert, Johannes Eggert, Emil Miller, Henry Olderog, Allan Nash and Robert Reimer.

Richard H. Petersen (1913 - 1998)

Richard H. Petersen was born January 20, 1913, the son of John and Meta Hansen Petersen. He died on Monday, January 26, 1998, at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of eighty-five.

Dick was born on a farm south of Kenwood, Iowa and received his education in rural schools, near his home and the Grant Township Lutheran School. He was baptized in Christ on April 27, 1913 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and later confirmed in 1925 at the Mapleton Lutheran Church.

On January 16, 1935, Dick was united in marriage to Caroline Quandt at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. The couple made their home in Blue Island, Illinois, where Dick was employed as a care taker for a cemetery. In 1942, the couple returned to farm in Crawford County, until moving to Charter Oak in 1960. Dick and Caroline owned and operated the cafe and lounge in Charter Oak from 1962 until 1972. Dick continued to help out in the lounge and also ran errands for his son, Larry at his shop.

Dick was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. He was a loving husband and a very caring father and grandfather who devoted his life to his family. In his leisure time he enjoyed dancing and watching the Chicago Cubs play and in his earlier years coached Little League Baseball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Herbert in infancy and Walter Petersen. Survivors include his wife, Caroline of Charter Oak; two sons, Lloyd Petersen and his wife, Rhoda of Lakeville, Minnesota; Larry Petersen and his wife, Maureen of Charter Oak; one daughter, Lavonne Stamp and her husband, Leroy of Elkhorn, Nebraska; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, one step-sister, Garnet Witt of Omaha; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 A.M., Friday, January 30, 1998 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Vicar Kent Pierce officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "God Will Take Care of You". Those serving as pallbearers were: Mark Heffernan, John Heffernan, Herb Quandt Jr., Robert Quandt, Gary Quandt and Gene Quandt. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship.

Richard Johann Backhaus (1892 - 1970)

Funeral services were held at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig Tuesday, March 17, 1970 for Richard Backhaus. Rev. R. J. Ratzlaff officiated. Mrs. Ray Martens and Mrs. Ernie Grell sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer", accompanied by Mrs. John Evers.

Richard Johann Backhaus, son of Otto and Anna Backhaus was born December 12, 1892 in Morgan Township. On June 23, 1920 he was married to Bertha Braase. They resided on a farm south of Schleswig until 1960 when they retired to Schleswig. Mr. Backhaus was a World War I Veteran. He died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital on March 14 after a lingering illness.

He is survived by his widow, Bertha, one son, Freddie, three grandchildren, one brother, Alfred of Ida Grove, three sisters, Dora Wiebers and Clara Jensen of Schleswig, Marie Rusch of Mapleton. Six brothers, one sister, one son and one daughter preceded him in death.

Graveside military rites were performed by members of the veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery.

Robert Delayne Baeth (1928 - 1972)

Funeral services for Robert D. Baeth were held Wednesday, May 24, 1972, at the Hope Lutheran Church in Des Moines, with the Rev. Norman L. Raedeke officiating. Bob suffered a heart attack and died while at work early Monday morning.

Robert Delayne, son of Robert J. Baeth and his wife, Marie Linke, was born at Correctionville, Iowa on June12, 1928. The family later moved to the Schleswig vicinity. Bob attended rural schools and graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1946.

He was married to Waverlene Lingren on January 16, 1949, in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple farmed near Schleswig for a number of years and then moved to Schleswig. Bob owned and operated several milk trucks with routes around Schleswig. They later lived in Ida Grove and Odebolt and five years ago moved to Des Moines. At the time of his death he was employed by Super Value Groceries in Des Moines as a warehouse foreman.

Survivors include his wife, Waverlene; one son Brian; one daughter, Barbara; his father, Robert J. Baeth of W. Pittsburg, California; two sisters, LaJune, wife of Charles Kersthold of Vallejo, California and Joydine, wife of Lorenz Schultz of Denison.

Pallbearers were Clifford Swift, Dewayne Gammelien, Harold Fenton, Marshall Cherryholmes, Delayne Lindquist and Randy Schultz. Interment was in the Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines.

Robert Eugene Petersen (1941 - 2000)

Robert "Bob" Eugene Petersen was born October 4, 1941, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Walter and Hazel Carlson Petersen. He died June 13, 2000 in Hamilton County at the age of fifty-eight.

Robert had moved from Schleswig to Carroll to Ames, where he had lived since 1984. He was the owner of a Hotel Barber Shop.

On November 3, 1962 Robert was united in marriage to Virginia Yockey in Charter Oak, Iowa. In 1994 he married Loretta Peterson. Robert was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa with Rev. Steve Chellew officiating the service. Grave side rites were held at 3:30 P.M. at the Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. Lee Mentink officiating.

Robert was preceded in death by his mother and wife Virginia Kay Petersen in December of 1989. He is survived by two sons, Steven Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska; Brian Petersen of Las Vegas, Nevada; his twin brother, Roger Petersen of San Diego, California; one grandchild, Alaina Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska; and his father, Walter Petersen of Schleswig. Visitation was held 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2000 at the Adams Funeral Home. The Adams Funeral Home in Ames, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Eugene "Bob" Petersen, 58, of Ellsworth, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, of injuries from an automobile accident.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa, with the Rev. Steve Chellew officiating. Burial was at Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa, with the Rev. Lee Mentink officiating. Visitation was at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Mr. Petersen was born Oct. 4, 1941, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Walter and Hazel (Carlson) Petersen. He married Virginia Yockey on Nov. 3, 1962 in Charter Oak, Iowa. He married Loretta Peterson in 1994, they later divorced. He had lived in Ames since 1984. He was the owner of Hotel Barber Shop.

Robert Glenn Evans (1901 - 1988)

Robert Glenn Evans was born on September 17, 1901, the son of Charles Wesley and Mary Elizabeth Hand Evans, in Bates County, Missouri. He died on May 5, 1988, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison after a long illness. He attained the age of 86 years.

At an early age, Glenn, as he was better known, moved with his parents to the Scott City, Kansas, area, where he attended a rural school. In 1921, Glenn and Edith Graham were united in marriage in Kansas. They lived on a ranch, where Glenn worked as a ranch hand. In 1926 they moved to the Cherokee, Iowa, area. He worked as a feed and seed salesman. Edith died in 1934.

On April 3, 1937, Glenn and Lydia Christman were united in marriage in Alexandria, South Dakota. They made their home in Ida Grove until 1945 when they moved to Schleswig, where he owned and operated a rendering business. He retired in 1966 but continued to live in Schleswig until health failed him and he entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Glenn served as mayor of Schleswig for three terms during the years from 1962 thru 1967. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, a member of the Schleswig Businessman's Club and served in the National Guard during WWII.

Preceding him in death were his wife Edith, one son Robert, one step son Virgil Wehner, one grandchild and four brothers: Ellis, George, Oscar and Ray.

Survivors include his wife Lydia; four sons, Donald Evans and his wife Marie from Petersburg, Virginia, Norman Wehner and his wife Carol of Ida Grove, Richard Wehner of Denison and Gerald Miller and his wife Mildred of Odebolt; four daughters, Marie and her husband Max Bilsten of Denison, Ina and her husband Julius Knop of Denison, Mildred and her husband Duane Malone of Dow City and Shirley and her husband Ronald Bond of Union, Michigan. There are also 42 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on May 9, 1988, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Darrell Bailey officiated. Mrs. Evelyn Johnson was organist for Mrs. Rubie Kastner singing "In The Garden" and "Have Thine Own Way Lord". Interment was in Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Serving as pallbearers were Michael Wehner, Charles Campbell, David Bilsten, Eugene Friedrichsen, Henry DeMann and Ted Malone. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Robert J. Peterson (1918 - 2004)

Robert J. Peterson was born October 3, 1918, the son of Charles and Elsie Schivie Peterson. He died Monday, October 4, 2004 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-six.

Robert was born in Westington, South Dakota. He received his education in rural schools near his home and graduated from the Westington Community High School with the class of 1937. After completing his education, Robert moved to Iowa, where he helped his brother farm for three years. In 1940, he received a football scholarship at New Mexico Western University, and after the football season, he returned to Iowa.

On October 12, 1940, Robert was united in marriage to Florence Fredericks at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple made their home on a farm near Dunlap, until purchasing a farm in Hanover Township. To this union three children were born, Joleen, Judy, and Darrell. From 1960 to 1967, they operated the Hilltop Amusement Park on their farm between Denison and Charter Oak. It included a miniature golf course, a children's ferris wheel and go-cart track. In 1967, they moved to Denison and purchased the Econowash Laundromat and Car Wash. Robert also drove a school bus for the Denison Community School for many years.

Robert became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in September of 1942, having been baptized and confirmed. In his younger years, Robert played softball in Charter Oak. He loved wood crafts, painting and selling them at flea markets. He also enjoyed socializing while fishing and camping with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Florence on January 20, 2003, one daughter, Joleen in infancy, two brothers, Clifford and Alfred Peterson and two sisters, Mildred Crossman and Elva Hansen.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Dutler and her husband, Roger of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one son, Darrell Peterson and his wife, Diane of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eileen Cancio and her husband, Leo of Washington, D.C.; Meryl Reed of Vermillion, South Dakota; one brother, Richard Peterson and his wife, Jean of Silver City, New Mexico; sister-in-law, Edna Peterson of Huron, South Dakota; and brother-in-law, Eldon Hanson of Vermillion, South Dakota; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 8, 2004 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Renae C. Claussen as she sang the songs "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "The Lords Prayer". The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as pallbearers were: Charles Peterson, Chuck Peterson, Jerry Peterson, Gene Peterson, Mike Peterson, Jack Peterson, A.J. Dutler, Mark Dutler and Leon Crossman. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them at the church in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Henry Schmidt (1897 - 1966)

Funeral services for Robert Schmidt were held Wednesday morning, April 6 (1966), at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. F A Wiese officiated. Mrs Ray Schmidt accompanied the choir who sang "I'm But A Stranger Here" and the congregation who sang "Rock of Ages." Rev Wiese read the following obituary:

Robert Henry Schmidt, son of Henry Schmidt and Berta nee Wilke, was born in Crawford County, south east of Schleswig on January 30th, 1897. He grew up in the Schleswig Community and lived there on the home place all of his life. He was married to Johanna Hesse on March 10, 1920. Johanna died in October of 1958.

Failing health the past years forced his retirement from active farming. He was living in the Colonial Manor in Odebolt. Suffering a stroke there, he entered the Ida Grove Hospital on Monday, March 28th and died there on Monday, April 4th.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for over 50 years and belonged to the Voters' Assembly.

He is survived by one brother, Louis C. Schmidt of Denison and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister Mrs William Schurke, and one brother George L. Schmidt. He attained to 69 years, 2 months and 4 days.

Pallbearers were LeRoy Schurke, Arlo Schmidt, Vernie Schmidt, Alvie Hesse, Richard Rohde and Gilbert Kluver. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery.

Ronald Babbe (1941 - 1962)

Schleswig Graduate Dies At Carroll

Funeral services for Ronald Babbe, 21, of Carroll, who died unexpectedly Saturday at a hospital in Carroll after suffering a heart attack, were held Tuesday at St. Mathew's Lutheran church at Mapleton.

Mr Babbe was born April 7, 1941, at Deloit, Iowa. He lived at Mapleton before going to Carroll.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs Erma Harman, Carroll; two brothers, Earl and David living at home; a sister Marjorie living at home, and the maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Ernesst Seils of Carroll.

He attended Schleswig-Ricketts community high school and graduated with the class of 1959.

Rosa (Boysen) Friedrichsen (1904 - 1979)

Rosa Friedrichsen was born Feb. 23, 1904 near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholaus and Helena Boysen. She died Dec. 22, 1979 at her home in Denison, at the age of 75.

Rosa was raised on a family farm, attending the rural schools near her home where she received her formal education. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church.

On Sept. 20, 1922, Rosa was united in marriage to Ben Friedrichsen at her family home near Kiron. They farmed near Kiron until 1942 when they moved to Denison. She was employed in Denison until her retirement in 1967. Since that time she has since continued to make Denison her home.

In addition to her parents, Rosa was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and one sister in infancy.

Survivors include, three sons, Willard and Burdell, of Denison and Gene of Onawa. Also by ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two brothers, Eldor Boysen of Sioux City and Gilbert Boysen of Denison and three sisters, Anna, Mrs. Ed Reincke and Hedwig, Mrs. Roy Naeve both of Charter Oak and Helen, Mrs. Russell Kesseling of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Jack Heck officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, LeRoy Friedrichsen, Ray Gonnerman, Clarence Friedrichsen, Everett Peasling, Edward Marth and Alvin Naeve. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Rosa (Hammer) Gluesing (1893 - 1963)

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 for Mrs. Alfred (Rosa) Gluesing at the Zion Lutheran church with Rev. Schmidt officiating.

She was the daughter of Carolina Nulle and John Hammer, born Nov. 20, 1893, and died Dec. 7, at the age of 70 years and 17 days. She was born at Manning, and baptized in the Manning Lutheran church and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran church in Manilla.

She was married to Alfred Gluesing on Feb. 11, 1914 by Rev. Freese. They farmed near Schleswig and Denison for 33 years and moved into Denison in 1947. Six children were born to this union.

Preceding her in death were four children, Edwin, Ruth, an infant son, and Vernon, killed in World War II in France in 1944; four brothers, Louie, Henry, Adolph and her twin brother, Edwin.

Survivors are her husband, Alfred, a son, Arnold of Denison, a daughter, Mrs. Esther Maack of Seaside, Calif; sisters, Dora Wolfram of Davenport, Marie Zorn of Kansas City and Anita Freml of Denison; brothers, William Hammer of Denison and Ed Hammer of Davenport; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran church.

Else (Petersen) Boeck (1901 - 1993)

Else Boeck was born in Astor, Ia. March 19, 1901, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Niemen Petersen. She was raised there and following high school she started nurse's training at Nicholas Senn Hospital in Omaha, Neb. Due to health problems she was forced to quit nurse's training and returned to Astor.

On April 1, 1920, Else was united in marriage with Oliver C. "Ike" Boeck at Denison, Ia. They made their home in Astor, Manning, Harlan and Denison before moving to Carroll in 1925 where they resided for 11 years. In 1936, they returned to Denison where Else was a homemaker and Ike was in the auto business. Following Ike's retirement in 1968, the Boecks continued to reside in Denison spending the winter months in Texas until 1975. The Boecks moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison April 14, 1988.

Ike died April 7, 1990, and Else continued to reside at Eventide where her death occurred Wednesday morning, May 5,1993. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 92 years, one month and 16 days.

In addition to her love of traveling, Else spent many of her leisure hours enjoying her hobbies of needle point and painting. Having been baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and later confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll, Else was a member of the Zion Luthern Church in Denison. In earlier years she sang in the Zion choir and the ladies choir, and was a 50 year member of Dorcas.

Including her parents and her husband, Else was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Albert Petersen, and one grandson, Douglas Boeck.

Those left to cherish her memory include three children and their spouses, Shirley and Arlen Germeroth of Denison, Richard and Joleen Boeck of Denison and Jane and James Niday of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Committal services and entombment of her cremains were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 1993, at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 8, 1993, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. Philip E. Bloch officiating. Larry Boeck was soloist singing, "Just As I Am," and the congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art," and "I'm But A Stranger Here." Karen Kahl served as organist. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie J. (Schneller) Schiernbeck (1909 - 1985)

Elsie J. Schiernbeck was born on April 26, 1909 in Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Cena Lorenzen Schneller. She died on Saturday morning, November 9, 1985 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, at the age of 76. Elsie spent her formative years on a family farm northeast of Denison. She received her formal education in the Denison community schools.

Elsie was united in marriage to Clarence Schiernbeck on December 16, 1936 in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Deloit. For the last number of years Elsie made her home in Denison. She had suffered from failing health for several years.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth.

Survivors include four daughters, Darlene, Mrs. August Hast, Jr., Janice, Mrs. William Soll, and Dianne, Mrs. Byron Hoffmier all of Denison, and Joyce, Mrs. Warren Whited of Deloit, and three sons, Clarence Schiernbeck of Polk City, Florida, Vernon Schiernbeck of Ankeny, and Richard Schiernbeck. She is further survived by three brothers, Vernon and Walter Schneller both of Sturgeon, Missouri, and Henry Schneller of Deloit, and two sisiters, Hilda, Mrs. Gilmore Gottsch of Westside and Mrs. Lillian Schultz of Schleswig, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 12, 1985 at 2:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery near Denison. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist with Mr. Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included The Old Rugged Cross, In The Garden, and How Great Thou Art. Grandsons serving as pallbearers for the services were Kevin R. Hagge, Michael T. Hagge, Randal S. Hagge, Terry Lee Soll, Brian D. Soll, Jeffrey Alan Hoffmeier, Vernon Schiernbeck Jr., and Ricky Schiernbeck. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Elsie M. Blume (1904 - 1999)

Elsie M. Blume was born to Fritz and Sophia Bramstedt Blume at rural Charter Oak, Iowa on June 18, 1904. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism September 25, 1904 at Charter Oak, Iowa and Confirmed in her Christian Faith December 25, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She was a lifelong resident of Crawford County and received her education in the local rural school.

Elsie started working as a young lady for the Denison Hospital as a cook and later worked for Watje's Restaurant as a cook and baker for many years taking some time off in the late fifties to care for her parents. She returned to work for the Watje's and went to work for Vernon Watje when he moved to the Red Lantern, retiring in April of 1976.

Elsie spent her retirement years in Denison where she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and enjoyed her hobbies of sewing, crocheting and playing cards in her spare time.

Elsie entered Denison Care Center in January of 1995 after having surgery and was transferred to Eventide Lutheran Home on May 30, 1995 and it was there her death occurred Sunday, October 17, 1999. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 95 years, 3 months and 29 days.

Including her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Quandt and five brothers, William, George, Herbert, Edgar, and Paul.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include one brother Fred Blume of Denison, Iowa, two sisters, Elma Lindemood and her husband Ike of Grants Pass, Oregon and Clara Peters of Portland, Oregon, several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa on Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and Rev. Daniel G. Gifford officiating. Vocal selections included "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "The Lord's Prayer", rendered by Henry Henningsen with Karen Kahl serving as the organist. Bearers included Henry Ketelsen, Glen Quandt, Harold Neumann, Fred Schnoor, Gordon Quandt, and Garry Quandt. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie Marguerite (Baer) Fuller (1905 - 1999)

Elsie Marguerite Fuller was born March 20, 1905 on a farm at Coon Grove near Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Alice Riddle Baer. She was raised there receiving her elementary education in the country schools before being graduated from Denison High School and Normal College with her teaching certificate. She then taught in the local rural schools.

On July 21, 1928, Elsie was united in marriage with Frederick Raymond Fuller at Crown Point, Illinois. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Jeanne. They made their home in Chicago before returning to Denison where Fred operated a trucking business. They later were business owners and residents of Dow City, Iowa for a number of years before moving to the farm on Airport Road, Route 3, Denison.

Frederick died October 1, 1986 and Elsie remained on the farm where she enjoyed her love of reading and reciting poetry, flower gardening and supporting the Oral Roberts and Billy Graham Ministries.

Since August 30, 1989 Elsie had made her home at the Denison Care Center in Denison where her death occurred Monday evening, January 18, 1999. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 93 years, 9 months and 28 days.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison where she had received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism December 3, 1978. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother taking great pride in her family and their accomplishments.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her only daughter, Jeanne Eggers, two brothers, Robert Baer and Paul Baer and six sisters, Lillian Hugg, Laura Walrod, Florence Savery, Jetta Frahm, Pearl Savery arid Verne James.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include two grandsons and their wives, Charles and Rita Eggers of Denison and Richard and Tammy Eggers of Phoenix, Arizona, three great grandchildren, Rachael and Christen Eggers of Denison and Zachary Eggers of Phoenix, Arizona, one sister, Evelyn Griffith of Denison, one brother, Ted Baer of Paradise, California, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A. M., Friday, January 22, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Chrisa Ferguson and the Rev. Kenneth M. Ferguson officiating. Music for the service included Gary Hansen singing "Just As I Am" and "Amazing Grace" with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Casket bearers included Paul Baer, Dave Yankey, Jim Savery, Jim Laubscher, Charles Hawley and Robert Collins. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Marie (Krogh) Steckelberg (1903 - 2003)

Elsie Marie, daughter of Therkild and Mette Christensen Krogh, was born November 18, 1903, in Vorning, Denmark. When she was less than a year old, she emigrated with her parents to the United States of America. The family homesteaded a farm in the Manilla, Iowa area. Elsie attended rural school near her home and then worked on the family farm and hired out to help in other homes jn the area.

On May 5, 1926, Elsie was united in marriage with Meinhardt L. Steckelberg at her parents' home near Manilla. Three children were born to this union. The family lived on rented farms around Manilla until purchasing their own farm in 1942. They farmed until their retirement in 1964 when they moved into Manilla. During their retirement, Elsie and Meinhardt enjoyed wintering in Florida and Texas.

Meinhardt died on January 17, 1983. Elsie continued to live in their home in Manilla until her health began to fail and she became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in August of 1998. On Thursday, April 24, 2003, Elsie died at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home at the age of 99 years, 5 months and 6 days.

Elsie was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a member of Ladies Aid and an honorary member of the Guild. She was also a member of the Better Homes Club and enjoyed crocheting, cooking, dancing, playing cards and being around people.

Preceding Elsie in death are her parents; husband; brother Chris Krogh and three sisters: Marie Nieman, Zena Jorgensen and Kathrine Justice. Survivors include her two daughters lone and husband Robert James of Seminole, Florida and Lois and husband George James of Rockwall, Texas; son Dr. (Richard) Wayne Steckelberg of Kansas City, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. Vicar Mark Mueller and Pastor Carl L. Noble officiated the service and interment held at the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa. Bonnie Lorenzen served as organist for the Trinity Lutheran Choir as they sang the "Choir Anthem" and congregational hymns, "How Treat Thou Art" and "Christ Jesus Lay In Death's Strong Bands". Those serving as casketbearers were Pam King, Robert P. James, Jacalyn Aikin, Tom James, Carol Steckelberg, Bill James, Lori Johns, Jim James, George James II, Patricia James, Susan Wagner, Gigi James, Julie Pietroburgo and Dan Steckelberg.

Elsie S. (Fredericks) Petersen (1908 - 1995)

Elsie S. Petersen was born November 12, 1908, the daughter of Henry and Marie Kiepe Fredericks. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa on Monday, September 4, 1995 at the age of eighty-six years.

Elsie grew up on a farm near Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on December 29, 1908 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa and confirmed there on March 25, 1923. She received her education in Hanover No. 7 School and graduated from the Zion Lutheran School.

On March 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Walter Petersen at the Zion Lutheran parsonage by Rev. William Frese. The couple farmed in Hanover Township for twenty-one years before moving to Denison. Elsie was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She enjoyed sewing and socializing with friends, while playing cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter on September 28, 1985; one son, Jerry in 1945; one daughter, Joan in 1950, one brother, Raymond and one sister, Bernice Suntken.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Petersen and his wife, Eloise of Des Moines, Iowa, Lyle Petersen and his wife, Joyce of Charter Oak; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Fredericks of Eventide, Lorena Petersen of Denison; one brother, Harold Fredericks and his wife, Evelyn of Deloit; one sister-in-law Dorothy Fredericks of Denison; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Suntken of Sioux City and Richard Petersen and his wife, Caroline of Charter Oak.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 6, 1995 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa with Pastor Kurt Kaiser and Pastor Philip Bloch officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak, Iowa. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "The Lord's Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Asleep in Jesus". Pallbearers were: Raymond Fredericks Jr., Richard Fredericks, Lloyd W. Petersen, Glen Petersen, Larry Petersen and Leroy Stamp. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Elsie (Popken) Thomsen (1909 - 1996)

Elsie Thomsen was born April 5, 1909, the daughter of Herman and Ernestine Lutz Popken. She died at the North Colorado Medical Center Hospice Unit in Greeley, Colorado on Monday, July 1, 1996 at the age of eighty-seven.

Elsie was born in Goodrich Township, near Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on June 6, 1909 and later confirmed on April 9, 1922 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She received her education at Zion Lutheran School and graduated from the Denison High School, After graduation she was employed as abstractor for Richardson Brothers for four years.

On September 15, 1931, Elsie was united in marriage to Paul Thomsen. Paul and Elsie made their home on a farm northwest of Denison and farmed until 1970 when they moved to Denison. Elsie was employed at the Crawford County Bank and the First National Bank.

Paul died on April 8, 1973 and Elsie remained living in Denison until March of this year, when she moved to Greeley, Colorado to be with her family. Elsie was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church and of their Ladies Aid, Eventide Auxiliary and a member of the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survivors include one daughter, Joan Cheshire of Greeley, Colorado; three grandchildren, Paul Cheshire of Senegal, West Africa; Lori Preshaw and Ben Cheshire, Jr. both of Greeley; eleven great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Rath of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 P.M., Monday, July 8, 1996 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Vicar Andrew Carlson officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet The Sound" and congregational hymn, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were: Marvin Jensen, Vernon Haase and Raymond Ruberg. Pallbearers were: Vernon Neumann, Howard Holmes, Virgil Boeck, Keith Jensen, Joe Griffin and Leslie Rath. Elise Wilhelmine (Klink) Boyens (1907 - 1991)

Elise Wilhelmine Boyens was born Aug. 26, 1907, the daughter of John Hildebrandt and Annie Vogt Hildebrandt Klink, and died March 7, 1991 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 83 years.

As an infant, Elise began her life as a Christian through Holy Baptism on April 22, 1908; and reaffirmed her faith in Christ through Confirmation on April 4, 1930 at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. William Frese. Lizzie, as she was known, was born on a farm in Paradise Township, Crawford County, Iowa where she lived with her family and received her education in rural schools in Paradise and Hanover Township.

On Feb. 11, 1931 Lizzie and William A. Boyens were united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran parsonage by Rev. William Frese. They made their home on a farm near Buck Grove, where they lived for six years. In 1937 they moved to Denison where Bill owned and operated a trucking company for 20 years. In 1957 Bill and Lizzie purchased and operated Sandbar Beach Resort at Spirit Lake for 12 years; in 1972 they returned to Denison. Bill and Lizzie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1981. Lizzie enjoyed her leisure time fishing and playing cards with her many friends. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and a 50 year member of the Zion Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William, who died April 9, 1986; two brothers, Emil and John Hildebrandt; one sister, Ella Eggert; and one stepbrother John Klink.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Florence Hildebrandt of Charter Oak and Minnie Boyens of Denison; two stepsisters, Clara Henningsen of Denison, and Elizabeth Jepsen of Charter Oak; one stepbrother Willie Klink of Phoenix, Ariz.; as well as a number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with Pastors Kurt Kaiser and Philip E. Bloch officiating the service and the graveside rites at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl served as organist for Henry Henningsen, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Those serving as pallbearers were Floyd Boger, Edmund Petersen, Melvin Boyens, Ronald Paulsen, LaVerne Christiansen and Wayne Henry. The Huebner Funeral Home of Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Emil Edward Lorensen (1908 - 1995)

Emil Edward Lorensen was born October 16, 1908, the son of Jess and Anna Thoem Lorensen. He died at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa on Saturday, March 4, 1995 at the age of eighty-six years.

Emil was born on the family farm southeast of Buck Grove and received his education at a rural school northeast of his home. After receiving his education he was employed as a farmhand in the Crawford County area.

In 1938, he moved to Charter Oak and farmed with his brother, Frank. He served his country during World War II with the 8th Army Air Corps and after receiving his basic training in Florida, he was sent overseas to England. He was an airplane mechanic for the 317 Service Group of H&H Company.

After receiving his honorable discharge, he made his home with his brother, Frank and his family for a number if years. In 1950, he moved to a farm southwest of Charter Oak and continued to farm until retiring in 1985. Emil continued to live on a farm until the fall of 1989 when he entered the Maple Heights Nursing Home is Mapleton.

Emil was particular fond of dogs and enjoyed telling "tall" dog stories and his war experiences. Emil had a special friend over fifty years, Mildred Clemons. Emil and Mildred enjoyed going to dances, celebrating birthday parties and sharing their life together.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents; four brother, John, Ludwig, Frank and Herman; four sisters, Anna, Emma, Adelia and Rose. Survivors include: nieces, nephews and his friend, Mildred Clemons of Onawa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 7, 1995 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak with Rev. Steven C. Hetzel officiating the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Cemetery, Charter Oak. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art", "Beyond the Sunset" and "In The Garden". Pallbearers were: Herman Rosburg, Randy Creese, Allen Rosburg, Mike Rosburg, Kevin Pester and Jim Pester. Military Honors were: American Legion Homer Hall Post No. 66 Charter Oak. Emil Henrich Hildebrandt (1901 - 1988)

Emil Henrich Hildebrandt, the son of Johannes and Annie Vogt Hildebrandt, was born on November 5, 1901, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Ia. He received his early education near his childhood home. As a young man Emil was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison in the spring of 1918.

He remained at home during his years following high school and became engaged in farming. When he left the farm later, he came to Denison where he owned and operated several filling stations over the years. It was during this period that Emil also served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After selling his last filling station, Emil began working with Farm Bureau, first as a tank wagon driver and then as a salesman until his retirement in 1966. He was a lifelong resident of Crawford County and a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and a member of American Legion Post No. 8 in Denison.

Emil died on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1988, at the Denison Care Center, where he had made his home since 1979. At the time of his passing, he had reached the age of 87 years, 1 month and 23 days.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents one brother John; one sister, Ella Eggert; one stepbrother, John Klink; two brothers-in-law, William Boyens and Fred Eggert; one step-brother-in-law, Fred Jepsen and one great-nephew, Steven Boger.

Survivors are one sister, Elise Boyens of Denison; one sister-in-law, Florence Hildebrandt of Charter Oak; two step-sisters, Clara Henningsen of Denison and Elizabeth Jepsen of Charter Oak; one step-brother, Bill Klink of Mesa, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 1988, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service was provided by Henry Henningsen who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "I'm But A Stranger Here." Karen Kahl served as organist and the congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Honorary pallbearers included Harry Eggert, Robert Meyer, Vince Hederman, Emmett Fitzpatrick and Jack Murphy. Pallbearers included Gilbert Moeller, Ronald Paulsen, Floyd Boger, Wayne Henry and Kermit Henningsen. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Denison with the Pfannebecker Funeral Home of Denison in charge of arrangements.

Emil Peter Meggers (1905 - 1984)

Emil Peter Meggers was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, Sept. 28, 1905, the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Jaacks Meggers. He was baptized March 5, 1906, and later was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Jan. 5, 1936. Emil was raised on the family farm and received his formal education in the local rural school. Following his schooling he helped his father on the farm.

On June 27, 1934, Emil was married to Ella Maack at Denison. Together they made their home in where Emil was employed at the Denison Dairy. Later he entered into partnership in the Dairy with Clarence Tamm and eventually became the sole owner. In 1960, he sold the business to White Star Dairy and continued employment with them for several years. After his retirement from the Dairy he operated a furniture refinishing business at his home until December of 1983. On June 27, of this year, Emil and Ella observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Emil had been in failing health the past few months and died June 29, 1984, at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb. He had attained the age of 78 years, 9 months, and 1 day. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Emil was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Edna Igou, and two that died in infancy and three brothers, Edward and Marvin Meggers and one that died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife Ella Meggers of Denison, one brother, Leonard Meggers of Dow City, and four sisters, Maggie, Mrs. Eddie Christiansen of Dow City, Minnie Frank of Denison, Esther, Mrs. Leonard Namanny of Denison, and Irene, Mrs. Fred Jepsen of Schleswig. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., July 2, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Rev. Jack D. Heck officiating. Comfort in music was provided by the congregation singing "I'm But A Stranger Here" and "How Great Thou Art", with Mrs. Fred Rabe serving as organist. Pallbearers included Wayne Igou, Robert Jepsen, Wayne Jepsen, Roger Frank, Merlin Maack, and Richard Jepsen. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Doris Frieda (Grell) Lehmann (1908 - 1985)

Emma Doris Frieda Lehmann, the daughter of Matt and Alvena (Carstens) Grell was born Jan. 13, 1908 in Crawford County, near Denison. Emma grew up in the Denison Community. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith and later confirmed in the same faith.

She was united in marriage to Ernest Lehmann on March 7, 1928 at Denison. The couple farmed in the Denison, Schleswig, Deloit and Danbury Communities. In 1969 the couple retired and moved into Mapleton. Her beloved husband died on March 17. After the death of her husband she entered the Eventide Nursing Home at Denison. Emma was a member here of St. Matthews Lutheran Church.

Emma died on Wednesday, April 24 (1985) at the Eventide Nursing Home having attained the age of 77 years, three months, and 11 days.

Survivors include one son, Dale of St. Louis, Mo., two daughters, Dorothy Lehmann of Mapleton, Donna, Mrs. Wilbert Groth of Dension, eight grandchildren, nine great grand-children; two brothers, Arnold Grell of Honnick, Fred Grell of Danbury, three sisters, Mrs. Marie Knudsen of Deloit, Mrs. Jeanette Johnson of Mapleton, Betty, Mrs. Peter Paulsen of Deloit. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters.

Services were held Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Pastor Philip Ritter, officiating and music by Mrs. Norma Jean Dose, organist. Congregational singing "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Heaven Is My Home." Pallbearers were Walter Woebke, Leon Johnson, Marvin Woebke, Arnold Grell, Jr., Tom Grell, David Johnson. Interment was at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison.

Emma Kathryn (Carstens) Voss (1900 - 1991)

DENISON, Iowa - Emma Kathryn Voss, 91, formerly of Denison, died Sunday, June 9, 1991, at the Elmwood Nursing Home in Onawa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, with Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery, under the direction of Walter A. Huebner & Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Mrs. Voss was born May 23, 1900, in Stockton, the daughter of Johannes and Catherina (Ahrenstorff) Carstens. She married Ernest Voss Feb. 19, 1919, in Lakefield, Minn. The couple made their home in the Denison area, where they farmed on various farms until retiring in 1954.

Mr. Voss died in 1978. Mrs. Voss was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Ladies Aid of the church.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Jim Buchholz, of Carroll, Iowa; six grandchildren; 14 great-grand-children; a brother, Harvey, of Lake Park; and two sisters, Edna Sohn of Lake Park and Alvina Koster of Round Lake, Minn.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Merlin; a daughter, Eunice Buchholz; a brother; and four sisters.

Emma Louise Lorensen (1900 - 1979)

Emma Louise Lorensen was born May 7, 1900 near Buck Grove, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Jess and Anna Thorn Lorensen. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Emma was raised on a family farm. She received her early education in the rural schools near her home. She later attended and graduated from the School of Nursing at Lakeside Hospital, Chicago, Ill. After graduation she returned to Denison where she was a nurse with Dr. Brannon and later Dr. Brannon and Dr. Grau. In 1969, she retired due to ill health, continuing to make Denison her home.

Emma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church as well as Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid. She died Oct. 19, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 79.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Louie; one brother-in-law, Fred Rosburg and one nephew, James Rosburg.

Survivors include four brothers, John Lorensen of Denison, Frank Lorensen and Emil Lorensen, both of Charter Oak and Herman Lorensen of Jefferson; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Else of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Adelia Rosburg of Charter Oak and Rosa Lorensen of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with burial in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. John Lutze officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Scott Ahrensen, Allen Rosburg, Michael Rosburg, Herman Rosburg, Ronald Rosburg and Michael Rosburg, Jr.

Emma (Riechert) Weltz (1901 - 1977)

Emma Weltz was born on April 21, 1901 in Germany the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Riechert Sr. She died Dec. 27 1977 at Bishop Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebr., at the age of 76. Emma was raised and educated in Germany. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

On May 27, 1922 she was united in marriage to Albert Weltz in Germany. Together they made their home in Germany where their first child was born. In 1929 they moved to the United States and made their new home on a farm near Denison. Emma made her home on the farm her entire life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Albert in October of 1969.

Survivors include, two daughters, Helen, Mrs. Walter Boehm of Denison, and Erna, Mrs. Raymond H.F. Carstensen of Denison and one son Willie also of Denison. And by eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two brothers, Karl Reichert and Henry Reichert, both of Denison.

Funeral services were held Dec. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison. Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens. The Rev. Victor Hoyer officiated at the services. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Fred Rabe, organist and Edmund Haase, soloist. Pallbearers included, grandsons, Robert Boehm, Roger Boehm, Dale Carstensen, David Carstensen, Terry Weltz and Alan Weltz. Funeral arrangments were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.
