Ann (Neumann) Gronau (1887 - 1986)

Anna Gronau was born on March 12, 1887, in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Johann and Anna Thams Neumann. She died Saturday afternoon, March 22, 1986, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 99 years and 10 days.

Anna spent her childhood years on her family's farm in Stockholm Township. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Luth188eran Church, Stockholm Township. She received her formal education in the St. John's School.

On October 8, 1907, Anna was united in marriage to Louie Fred Gronau at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. They made their home on a farm near Kiron. Following retirement from farming in 1948, they made their home in Kiron. Louie died July 20, 1970. Anna continued to make Kiron her home until entering the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in October of 1980. Anna was a member of the St. John's Ladies Aid.

In addition to her parents and husband, Anna was preceded in death by her son John in 1980, three brothers, Fred, Walter and John, and four sisters, Ella Neumann, Mary Neumann, Minnie Hagge and Augusta Pithan.

Survivors include her daughter, Malinda, Mrs. Hugo Dahms of Schleswig and two sons, Harold of Omaha and Raymond of Overland Park, Kansas. She is further survived by eight grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Frieda Friedrichsen of Denison and Mrs. Emilie Gronau of Kiron, and her daughter-in-law Maxine Gronau of Denison, as well as nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 26, 1986, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. Interment was in the St. John's Cemetery. Vicar Hilmer J. Hafner officiated at the services and graveside rites. Miss Lois Gronau served as organist for the services. Congregational hymns for the services included "Abide With Me", 'I'm But a Stranger Here" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Serving as pallbearers were Doug Gronau, Dale Gronau, Denis Dahms, Mark Fischer, Michael Fischer and Dennis Ackerman.

Anna (Clausen) Hollrah (1897 - 1997)

Anna Hollrah was born October 22, 1897, the daughter of Christian and Elise Schoening Clausen. She died at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa, Saturday, December 20, 1997 at the age of one-hundred.

Anna was born in Petersdorf, Fehmarn, Germany and was baptized in Christ on November 11, 1897 in the Lutheran Church in Petersdorf, Fehmarn, Germany. In 1908, Anna immigrated with her parents and grandmother, Friederica Clausen to America. They traveled from New York by train to Charter Oak, Iowa, where they settled on a farm.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Charter Oak in 1911 and was united in marriage to Carl Hollrah in 1917. The couple farmed in the Charter Oak area for several years and were blessed with the birth of five children. In 1948, the couple retired from farming and moved to Charter Oak. Carl died in 1974 and Anna continued to make her home in Charter Oak, until entering the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in September of 1996.

Anna was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies Aid and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Charter Oak Band Boosters and several card clubs. She loved to bake and gave much of it to family and friends. In her past times she spent many hours tatting and embroidering in her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; one sister, Edna Clausen; one son, Leland; two grandsons, Ronald Hollrah and Brian Hollrah; two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Anna Winquist.

Survivors include two sons, Vernon Hollrah and his wife, Leona of Charter Oak, Donald Hollrah and his wife, Donna of Rogers, Arkansas; two daughters, Evelyn Mundt-Meyer of Sun City, California; Aldene Winquist of Kiron; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grand children; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30, A.M., Monday, December 22, 1997 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Kent Pierce officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational singing "I Know that My Redeemer Lives!", "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "Beautiful Savior". Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Steven Winquist, David Winquist, Alan Winquist, James Hollrah, Dean Hollrah, Vern Hollrah, Anitra Koski, JoNel Mundt, Kent Hollrah and Jane Lafleur. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Anna (Muenster) Mundt (1891 - 1982)

Anna Katherine Mundt was born on March 16, 1891 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Schmidt Muenster. She died on Friday morning, February 5, 1982 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 90.

Anna spent her early years on a family farm. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. At the age of 9, Anna moved with her family to Ricketts. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Anna was united in marriage to William H. Mundt in 1912. Together they made their home in Ricketts, where Mr. Mundt was in the construction and later the automobile business.

After her husband's death in 1943, Anna continued to make Ricketts her home. Due to ill health, Anna entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison several months ago.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Anna was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include one son, John of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; two daughters, Ellen, Mrs. Ray Kroll of Long Beach, California and Miss Doris Mundt of Sioux City, Iowa. Also surviving are four granddaughters and five greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 8, 1982 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Soldier Township. Vicar Fred Lingenfelder officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Wayne Kuhlmann, Vernon Hollrah, Kenneth Baak, Victor Schwarz, John Winquist and Herbert Bohlmann.

Ben Klinker (1897 - 1980)

Ben Klinker was born on January 15, 1897, at Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the son of Peter and Louise Krueger Klinker. He died on Thursday morning, June 5, 1980, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 83.

Ben was baptized as an infant and later during the time of his education was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hanover Township. Ben was raised on a family farm. He received his formal education in the St. Paul's Lutheran School at Hanover Township.

On February 19, 1921, Ben was united in marriage to Hilda Ackelbein at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm in Willow Township. Mrs. Klinker died in 1956 while they were still on the farm. Later in 1961, Ben retired and moved to Charter Oak, where he has since continued to make his home.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Ben was preceded in death by one son Ben Jr., two brothers, two sisters and one half-brother.

Survivors include, two sons, Alvern and Norman both of Charter Oak, three daughters, Helen, Mrs. Vernie Schmidt of Denison, Mrs. Elaine Reitz of Charter Oak and Lois, Mrs. Merle Ernst of Schleswig, twenty-three grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 7, 1980, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery near Charter Oak. The Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated at the services.
Pallbearers included grandsons, Larry Reitz, Roger Schmidt, Allen Ernst, Arlen Hennings, Terry Schmidt and Mark Reitz.

Bernhard Frederick Schlie (1898 - 1982)

Bernhard Frederick Schlie, 84, of West Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died April 19, 1982 in Gardena, Calif. Services were at 3 p.m. April 27 in the Walter Funeral Home in Ute. Harold Burmeister of Sioux City officiated. Burial was in the St. Clair Cemetery at Ute.

Mr. Schlie was born Jan. 26, 1898 at Denison. He resided in Denison, Charter Oak, Ute and Schleswig, Iowa and in Sioux City about 35 years, before moving to California in 1980. He was a farmer, auctioneer, trucker and was in the furniture business.

He married Helen Heese March 25, 1921, in Minnesota. In 1944 he married Jessie Hennings in Sioux City.

Survivors include four sons, Mike of Gardena, Edward and Leroy, both of Sacramento and Milfred of Redding, Calif; three daughters, Lucille Schlie of Sacramento, Mrs. Ike (Janice) Shanks of Fort Madison and Mrs. Frank (Linda) Richards of Lawndale, Calif; one stepson, William Fischer of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Dorothy Houchins of Sioux City; one brother, Jack of Arion, one sister, Mrs Bertha Kluver of Charter Oak; 26 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dora Boehm, his wife, two sons, two step daughters, three sisters and four brothers.

Pallbearers were Henry Kluver, Roy Kluver, Albert Kluver, Marvin Kluver, Larry Kluver, and John Schlie.

Benhard Peter Carstensen (1899 - 1988)

Benhard Peter Carstensen was born March 26,1899, the son of Peter and Marie Petersen Carstensen in Soldier Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and died May 29, 1988, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 89 years.

As a young boy, Ben lived on a farm with his parents, and attended rural schools, and as a young man, he hired out to neighboring farmers.

On October 14, 1920, Ben and Marie Bohlmann were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township by the Rev. Carl Runge, and for ten years shared their lives farming. Their lives were fulfilled with the blessing of three children: Dorothy, Vernon and Delores. Ben left farming and began a new career, he trucked for a few years and then became a Marshal in Schleswig and Ricketts.

After retirement, he remained in Ricketts where they lived at the time of his death. He was a loving husband and a caring father who was happiest sharing his time with his family and he enjoyed working outside. He was baptized and confirmed as an adult by Rev. Fredrick Wiese at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, two half sisters, and one half brother. He is survived by his wife, Marie; two daughters, Dorothy Miller and her husband Harold of Denison, and Delores Harding and her husband Charles of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one son, Vernon of Ricketts; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, 1988, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. Vicar Robert Hines officiated at the services and graveside rites at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa. Musical selections were "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art". Serving as pallbearers were Lloyd Carlson, Dick Knop, Gary Harding, Paul Meitzler, James Harding and Glen Miller.

Bertha Louise (Schoenfeld) Friedrichsen (1894 - 1986)

Bertha Louise Friedrichsen was born on July 1, 1894 near Ricketts, Iowa, the daughter of Fredrick and Cecelia Geimer Schoenfeld. She died Feb. 21, 1986 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, at the age of 92 years, seven months and twenty days.

Bertha spent her early years on a farm near Ricketts where she was born. She was baptized on Sept. 9, 1894 in Hanover Township. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church April 14, 1909.

On Nov. 19, 1926 Bertha was united in marriage to Jens Friedrichsen in the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. Together they made their home on a farm near Ricketts. To this union four sons and one daughter were born.

Bertha was a charter member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the Senior Citizens group and a member of various card clubs in Ricketts.

In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Jens who died in February of 1969, one great grandchild Theanna Schmidt, and three brothers.

Survivors include her children, Gloria Schmidt and her husband Howard of Papillion, Neb., Robert Friedrichsen and his wife Corinne of Marshfield, Wis., Raymond Friedrichsen and his wife LaVonne of Danbury, Richard Friedrichsen and his wife Janis of Minneapolis, Minn., Roger Friedrichsen and his wife Sue of Moorhead. Twenty grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Emma Christiansen of Denison and Alma Clausen, also of Denison.

Funeral services were held Feb. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. The Vicar Norman Nibbletts officiated at the services. Nancy Bielenberg served as organist. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Terry Friedrichsen, Steven Friedrichsen, Craig Friedrichsen, Gary Friedrichsen, Father Timothy Friedrichsen and Alex Friedrichsen. Serving as pallbearers were: Ronald Schmidt, Donald Schmidt, Rick Friedrichsen, Rodney Friedrichsen, Bryan Friedrichsen and Michael Friedrichsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Bertha (Schlie) Kluver (1895 - 1985)

Bertha Kluver, the daughter of Henry Schlie and Dora Bohm was born Jan. 30, 1895 in Crawford County near Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in 1896 and confirmed later in the Christian faith.

She married Jacob Kluver Dec. 30, 1914, in Denison. The couple farmed near Schleswig, Buck Grove, Ricketts and Ute. They retired in 1947 and moved in the town of Ute. Jacob died on Nov. 13, 1958. Bertha Kluver died Friday, June, 1985 at the Eventide Nursing home in Denison, at the age of 90 years, four months and eight days. Bertha was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Ute.

Survivors include a son, Albert of Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Velma) Hansohn of Kiron and Mrs. Dorothy Adams of Galva; a brother, John Schlie of Denison; 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Dora Schlie; one son, Raymond; four brothers, Bill, killed in WWI, Gus, Henry and Ben Schlie and half-brother, Walter Kruger; three sisters, Alvena Joens of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, Augusta Kluver and Anna Kruger; two son-in-laws, Wayne Adams and Edwin Jacoby and four grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, June 10, 1985 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute with Pastor Robert Leege officiating and music by Mrs. Harvey Thies, organist. The St. Paul's Church choir sang, "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Walt Nun, Raymond Pithan, Fred Soukup, Ralph Teut, Harlan Theobald and Francis Thompson. Interment was at the St. Clair Cemetery in Ute. Walter Funeral Service of Ute was in charge of the arrangements.

Bertha (Weber) Linde (1898 - 1988)

Bertha Overhue Linde, eldest daughter of Riener and Emma Sapp Weber, was born Jan. 31, 1898 in Grant Township, Carroll County, la. She died on Jam 31, 1988 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, attaining the age of 90 years.

Bertha was baptized and confirmed in the Wheatland Presbyterian Church near Breda. She grew up on a farm and attended rural schools.

On Jan. 9,1918, she and Frank Overhue of Wall Lake, were united in marrriage in the Wheatland Presbyterian parsonage. To this union eight children were born. They made their home in Nebraska for a while as well as the Wall Lake, Dunlap and Charter Oak areas. Frank died on Oct. 13, 1944.

On Feb. 25, 1961 Bertha and Eddie Linde of Westside were united in marriage. Eddie died in Nov. of 1974. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak at the time of her death.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, Bertha was preceded in death by a son, Darrell in 1932 at the age of four years; a daughter, Eileen Kerns in December of 1961; three sisters, Anna Linde in November, 1958, Tena Champlin in July of 1978 and one in infancy; two brothers, Jacob Weber and John Weber; also four grandsons in infancy.

Survivors include her sons Merlin Overhue and his wife, Wardene, Frank Overhue and his wife, Ruth, all of Charter Oak, and Virgil Overhue and his wife, Marlis of Sioux City; three daughters: Verla Mae and her husband, Owen Rothman of Colorado Springs, Colo., Millicent and her husband, Elmer Cowles of Winona, Minn., and Marjorie and her husband, Oakley Quartana of Milwaukee, Wis; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are three sisters: Bena, Mrs. Albert Hienze of Carroll, Margaret, Mrs. Jim Barney of Logan, and Emma Ohlrich of Council Bluffs.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak. Reverend James Gubser officiated. Mrs. Dean Hunter served as organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist. Selections were "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art." Burial was in the Wheatland Cemetery near Breda. Serving as pallbearers were Alvin Overhue, Frank Overhue, David Overhue, Rick Overhue, Ronald Cowles and Wayne Chamberlain. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak._

Bertha (Dethman) Miller (1885 - 1976)

Mrs. Bertha Dethman Miller, daughter of Claus and Catharina Dethman, was born November 23, 1885 in Crawford County, and passed from this life in the Crawford County Memorial Hospital March 5, 1976, at the age of 91 years and 4 months.

She was a lifelong resident of the Schleswig community. She was raised on a farm southwest of Schleswig in Goodrich Township. She attended rural public school in Goodrich Township walking two miles each way.

February 2, 1910, Bertha was united in marriage to Henry Miller by Rev. William Frese of Denison. They made their home on a farm southeast of Schleswig. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Vernette, Mrs. Harold Schultz.

Bertha was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith by Rev. K. W. Kielhorn in the Schleswig United Church of Christ.

Preceding Bertha in death were her parents, her husband Henry, February 21, 1960; four brothers, and one sister.

Bertha is survived by her daughter, Vernette and her husband, Harold of Schleswig; by two grandchildren, Carol, now Mrs. Erwin Neddermeyer living southwest of Schleswig, and Curtis Schultz living in Schleswig; and by six greatgrandchildren.

Bertha Miller's memorial service was held in the Schleswig United Church of Christ, Monday, March 8, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Fred Moore officiating. Mrs. Malinda Evers served as organist. Mrs. Jeanette Grell and Mrs. Evelyn Johnson sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "God Will Take Care of You". Pallbearers were Emmett Hollander, Paul Baer, Alan Sedore, Peter Pickel, Ernie Grell, Henry Braase and Stanley Baker. The graveside service was held in Morgan Cemetery.

Carl J. Kluver (1895 - 1988)

Carl J. Kluver, 93, of Mapleton, la. died on Saturday, May 7, 1988 in a Sioux City hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11 at the St. Peter's United Church of Christ at Mapleton, with the Reverend Richard Hempenius officiating. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig. Visitation was after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Kluver was born on Feb. 18, 1895 to Carl and Magdalena Katherena Henrietta (Stodt) Kluver at Bannesdorf of Fehmern of West Germany. At the age of eight, he came with his parents to the United States, settling in Schleswig.

He grew up in the Schleswig community and married Emma Hesse on June 10, 1920, at Schleswig. The couple farmed in the Mapleton, Schleswig, Charter Oak area, moving into Mapleton, in 1964. She died on Dec. 1, 1987. Mr. Kluver was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Gilbert; five brothers; three sisters; one grandson; and one great granddaughter. Survivors include a daughter, Pearl Schillerberg of Denison, a son, Carl E. of Essex and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Marvin Kluver, Frank Fulton, Sr., Earl Hesse, Charles Kluver, Frank Fulton, Jr., and Carl Hesse.

Carl Johannes Wilken (1894 - 1974)

Carl Johannes Wilken, son of Heinrich and Margaretha Jurgens Wilken was born Aug. 26, 1894, at Fehmarn, Germany.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1910 and as a young man came to American to make his home in 1911. He lived with his sister, Dora and husband Henry Speth, at Battle Creek. He then worked for the Adolph Meyer family at Ricketts and then later for the Bill Bielenberg family at Schleswig.

He married Anna Meyer on June 16, 1924, at the Soldier Township Lutheran Church by Rev. Vln Gemmingen and they made their home near Schleswig. They had four children, Florence, Irene, Vernie and Luetta.

Carl received his citizenship papers in 1940, to become a citizen of the United States. The family lived on the farm near Schleswig until 1950 when they moved to an acreage south of Denison. Mrs. Wilken died Feb. 7, 1953.

On June 13, 1954, Carl married Bessie Henrichsen at Denison. They moved into their present home on 26th Street in 1955. Bessie died Jan. 11, 1974.

Carl died March 4, 1974, after a lingering illness at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, Nikko, Johannes, Matt, and Henry and one sister, Mollie Langbehn.

He is survived by his children, Mrs. Carl (Florence) Kyle of Sioux City, Irene Bloom of Omaha, Nebr., Vernie of Denison, and Mrs. Jack (Luetta) Wabschall of North Canton, Ohio, two stepsons, Ralph Henrichsen of Waukeegan, Ill., and Kenneth Henrichsen of Alhambra, two sisters, Mrs. Dora Speth of Davenport, and Mrs. Emil Mildenstein of Battle Creek. Carl had been a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church since moving to Denison.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 7, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, with Rev. Robert Maschke officiating. Burial was at the Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig.

Caroline Augusta (Schwarz) Langholdt (1889 - 1987)

Caroline Augusta Langholdt was born on January 26, 1889 in Soldier Township, Crawford County, la., the daughter of Henry Schwarz and Amelia Henkel Schwarz. She died on July 25, 1987 ,at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, la. She attained the age of 98 years.

Carrie, as she was better known, was baptized on June 9, 1889 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township and confirmed on Marcn 23, 1902 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School.

On March 29, 1914 Carrie and Albert H. Langholdt of Ricketts, were united in marriage in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Soldier Township. To this union three children were born.

After their marriage, Carrie and Albert lived in Ricketts, for two years. They moved to a farm northwest of Ricketts making their home there until 1952 when they retired from farming and moved to the Immanuel Lutheran Teacherage.

Albert died on December 14, 1960. Carrie entered the Eventide Lutheran Home in 1979 where she resided until her death. Carrie was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid.

In addition to her husband and parents, Carrie was preceded in death by one son, Wilbert; two brothers, Walter and Henry; and three sisters, Alma Koeppen, Emma Buenger and Elsie Schrieber.

Survivors include her sons Albin Langholdt and his wife, Esther, of Denison, Gehart Langholdt and his wife, Emma, of Charter Oak; one daughter-in-law, Laura Langholdt, of Ricketts; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak. Reverend E. E. Greene officiated. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Loren Seils served as organist for congregational singing. Selections were "Heaven Is My Home" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Serving as pallbearers were Gerald Langholdt, Terry Langholdt, Steven Langholdt, Sherwin Langholdt, Allan Neddermeyer and Gary Price. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Caroline (Rix) Hopp (1894 - 1991)

Caroline Hopp was born on November 27, 1894, the daughter of Henry and Augusta Rasch Rix. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on December 31, 1991 at the age of 97 years.

Caroline grew up on a farm in Soldier Township and attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Hanover Township. She was baptized on December 16, 1894 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 12, 1908 at St. Paul.

On December 29, 1915, Caroline was united in marriage to Leo Hopp at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township and were blessed with the birth of five children. The two farmed in Hanover Township for a couple of years before settling on a farm in Soldier Township where they made their home. In 1947, they retired from farming and moved to Schleswig where they remained. Leo died in 1975 and in 1991, she moved to the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison.

She was a loving wife and mother who worked hard caring for her family's needs, and her kindness and affection will always be remembered by those who loved her and knew her. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, the Ladies Aid and former Aquila Pricilla Guild at the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo, one daughter and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Edwin and his wife, Florence of Charter Oak and Loren and his wife, Marcella of Hudson, Wisconsin. Also two daughters, Mildred Bohlmann and her husband, Elmer of Schleswig and Lavina Krenmeyer and her husband, Wendella of Seymour, Illinois. Other survivors include sixteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 3, 1992 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Donald R. Wagner and Rev. Richard E. Nelson officiated the service and grave side riles held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery Hanover Township in Charter Oak. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for the congregation singing "Nearer, My God to Thee" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Pallbearers were Merle Witt, Bill Souza, James Slechta, Brian Hopp, Blaine Hopp and Bradley Hopp. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison.

Caroline Christina (Christiansen) Meyer (1884 - 1983)

Funeral services for Caroline Christina (Lena) Meyer, 98, of Lake View, Iowa, were held on March 1, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lake View, with Pastor H.W. Kramer officiating. Mrs. Meyer died on Feb. 27, 1983, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home, Wall Lake.

Organist James Stock accompanied congregational singing. Mrs. Delmer Huisenga and Mrs. Herbert Schultz were in charge of the floral offerings. Pallbearers were Clarke Brotherson, Gaylen Brotherson, Marlin Meyer, Steve Olerich, Melvin Peters, and John Rix. Interment was made at the Wall Lake Cemetery, Wall Lake, under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home of Lake View.

Lena Meyer was born on March 23, 1884, the daughter of Anton and Wilhelmina Prien Christiansen, in Charter Oak.

She was married to William H. Meyer on Jan. 1, 1904, in Stockholm Township, Boyer, by Rev. Discher. Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the G. L. F. W. Club.

Survivors include a son, Elmer Meyer, of Lake View; two daughters: Mabel (Mrs. Jake) Janssen, of Carnarvon, and Viola (Mrs. Marvin) Brotherson, of Council Bluffs; nine grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren: five great great grandchildren; a brother, Henry Christiansen, of Denison; and three sisters-in-law: Mrs. Emma Christiansen, of Schleswig, Mrs. Agnes Christiansen, of Denison, and Mrs. Laura Christiansen, of Schleswig.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Julius; two great grandsons; a great great grandson; a sister, Mary; and eight brothers: Julius, Abert, Ben, John, Louis, Otto, and two infant brothers.

Caroline M. (Ploog) Hansen (1888 - 1986)

Caroline M. Hansen was born on February 24, 1888 in Crawford County, Iowa the daughter of John and Augusta Boger Ploog. She died May 17, 1986, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of 98 years, two months; and 13 days. Caroline spent her formative years in Crawford County. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

Caroline was united in marriage to Martin Hansen on Aug. 26, 1914. They made their home on a farm northwest of Denison. In 1941 they moved to a new home a short distance south of their first home. Martin died April 9, 1961.

Caroline continued to make her home on the farm for a number of years. She later moved to Denison, becoming a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home, Sept. 9, 1976. Caroline was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and the Zion Lutheran ladies Aid.

In addition to her parents and husband, Caroline was preceded in death by two daughters, Edna and Eleanor, one son Harry, and two sisters, Minnie Marquardt and Hertha Brown.

Survivors include two sons, August J. and wife Marie and John H. and wife Doris all of Denison. She is further survived by nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment was in the Morgan Cemetery south of Schleswig. The Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services with Mr. Henry Henningsen serving as soloist. Hymns for the services included The Old Rugged Cross and God Will Take Care Of You. Pallbearers for the services were Harry Hansen, Martin Hansen, John Hansen, David Long, Gary Preul, and Walter Woebke. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Caroline (Petersen) Groth (1897 - 1980)

Caroline Groth was born July 2, 1897, on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Emilie Evers Petersen.

She died April 17, 1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison having attained the age of 82 years, nine months, and 15 days. Caroline was raised on the farm at which she was born and received her formal education at the local rural schools.

On Feb. 6, 1918, she was united in marriage with Charles M. Groth at Denison. They made their home on Mr. Groth's father's farm in Goodrich Township. In 1946 they retired and moved to Denison where she had since resided. Mr. Groth died June 23, 1958. Caroline was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Fritz Petersen, and one sister, Hilda Groth. Caroline is survived by one son, Harry of Denison, one daughter, Louise, Mrs. Walter Maack of Denison, four grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Dora Jensen of Denison, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Apr. 19, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with the Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Dorothy Jessen as organist and Evelyn Johnson and Joan Cassens as vocalists. Pallbearers were Wilbert C. Groth, Milroy Groth, Arnold Petersen, Herman Meiners, Leroy Fredericks, and William Luth. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery South of Schleswig. The Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Franzek (1891 - 1994)

Charles Franzek was born on July 28, 1891, the son of Paul and Mary Scheck Franzek. He died at the Eventide Nursing Home on January 23, 1994 at the age of one hundred-two years.

Charles was born in Cook County, Illinois, where he lived with his parents and received his education. After completing his education he worked briefly for the North-Western Railroad. He was subsequently called to service in the U.S. Army on July 25, 1918 at Camp Dodge, Iowa and was Honorably Discharged on June 8, 1919.

He moved to Iowa after he completed his military responsibilities and was employed on the Charles Richerson farm in Jackson Township, Iowa. He then moved to a farm near Vail.

On July 23, 1927, Charles was united in marriage to Nellie Mae Riley. The couple was blessed with one daughter. They subsequently settled on a farm north west of Ricketts where they remained until 1942, when they moved to Schleswig where Charles purchased and operated the City Cafe.

Additionally, he managed a bar in Dow City, owned and operated the Mt. Ida Steak House in Ida Grove and managed a lounge in Schleswig in addition to working at the Schleswig Bowling Alley.

Charles enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed occupying his free time fishing at Spirit Lake. On November 25, 1980, Charles moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where he has since lived.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Nellie in 1978, one brother, Paul and a half-sister, Rose. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Schoenfeld and her husband, Norman of Schleswig; two granddaughters, Cathy Bubke and her husband Tom of Schleswig and Mary Hansen and her husband, Mitch of Norfolk, Nebraska; one grandson, Gale Schoenfeld of Omaha; and eight great-grandchildren, Kelly Wessel and her husband Darren of Denison; Kim Bubke of Council Bluffs; Krista Bubke of Schleswig; T.J. Bubke of Schleswig; Chris Harm of Lincoln, Nebraska; Stephanie Hansen of Norfolk, Nebraska; and Brent Hansen also of Norfolk. Also, two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Olderog and Esther Andresen both of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10 A.M., Wednesday, January 26, 1994 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig, Iowa with Rev. James Schatz officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for Rubie Kastner and Pam Gronau singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer My God To Thee". Pallbearers and Military Honors were: V.F.W. Post No. 3930 and American Legion Post No. 645, Schleswig, Iowa. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Quandt (1888 - 1985)

Charles Quandt was born on October 30, 1888, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, the son of Herman and Albertina Meseck Quandt. He died Monday morning, April 15, at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll, at the age of 96.

Charles spent his formative years on his family's farm in Hanover Township. He received his formal education in the rural schools near his home. During these years he began working in the farming community near Charter Oak.

On January 12, 1916, Charles was united in marriage to Anna Brummer at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak. Together they began farming in the Ute and Mapleton areas. After three years they moved to a farm four miles east of Charter Oak where they resided for twenty-three years. They then moved to a farm two miles south of Charter Oak where they lived for ten years. In 1953 they retired from farming and moved into the Charter Oak community.

Anna died in February of 1980. Charles continued to make Charter Oak his home until entering the Carroll Health Center on the twentieth of February this year.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Charles was preceded in death by one daughter, Marjorie, one son Francis, two granddaughters, five brothers, Max, Emil, William, Otto and George, one sister, Anna, Mrs. John Henning, and son-in-law Raymond Kluver.

Survivors include six sons, Paul and wife Helen, Harold and wife Pearl, Norman and wife Ruth, and Donald and wife Veronica, all of Carroll; James and wife Donna of Westside, and Robert of Council Bluffs; three daughters, Mrs. Marcella Kluver of Charter Oak, Evelyn, Mrs. Romanan Jenkins of Kiron, and Dorothy, Mrs. Albert Kluver of Carroll. Also surviving are fifty-five grandchildren, one hundred-eleven great grandchildren, one great great grandson, and one brother, Herman Quandt of Eventide Lutheran Home, one sister, Emma Schneider of Denison, two daughter-in-laws, LaRue Quandt of Schleswig, and Velma Quandt of Council Bluffs, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, April 18, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery near Charter Oak. Father Eugene Walding served as celebrant of the Mass. Mrs. Ann Delanty was organist with Karen Chamberlain and Jim Jurgens as soloists, providing music for the Mass. Lector for the Mass was Daryl Quandt, with Dennis Jenkins and Craig Quandt as gift carriers. A parish rosary was recited at the Huebner Funeral Home the evening before the funeral Mass. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Ronald Quandt, Jerry Kluver, Verdean Kluver, Gary Quandt, Jary Quandt, and Dale Quandt. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huenber Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Charlie Miller (1890 - 1976)

Charlie Miller, son of Hans Miller and Katherine Jochimson was born on April 17, 1890 near Schleswig. He died on June 16, 1976 at the Hartley Memorial Hospital in Battle Creek after reaching the age of 86 years, 1 month and 29 days. Before marriage, he lived on a farm in Crawford and Ida Counties.

He married Emma Marie Tedsen at Schleswig on January 29, 1913. Two sons and one daughter were born to this union. After marriage, he lived near Schleswig for seven years. In 1920 he moved to near Mapleton. In 1966, he moved to Schleswig and lived there until 1973, then entered the Willow Dale Nursing Home. His usual occupation was farming.

Services were held on Saturday, June 19, 1976 at the Walter Chapel in Mapleton , at 10:00 a. m. with Rev. Walter Enstrom officiating. Burial was in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. Pallbearers were Ray Miller, Ed Gosch, Harold Stockfleth, Emmett Hollander, Werthus Grill and Ace Nelson.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph of Schleswig and Carl of Mapleton; one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Emma Jean) Edgington of Mapleton; one sister, Mrs. Hilda Jensen of Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Mrs. Emil Kuehl and Mrs. Herman Boysen; two brothers, Alex and Robert.

Christena Mary (Losch) Siemer (1888 - 1982)

Christena Mary Siemer, who has been a resident at the Dunlap Care Center since 1982, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1985, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 97 years, three months, 16 days.

Christena was born June 27,1888, in Box Butte County, Neb., the daughter of Joseph and Margret Losch.

She was married in February of 1909 to Henry Siemer in Dunlap. Henry and Christena farmed south of Dow City until his death in 1943. At that time she moved to Dow City where she had numerous jobs. She moved to Dunlap in 1960 and had her own apartment until 1982 when she moved to the Care Center. She was a member of St. Patrick's Parish, Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society.

She is survived by two children, Evelyn Jochims of Dunlap and Ben Siemer of Dow City; six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; one brother, Henry Losch of Denison.

She was preceded in death, by her husband; three brothers, Matt, Hubert, and John Losch, and one sister, Gertrude Siemer.

Services were held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. Father Tom Coenen of Dunlap and Father John Vakulskas of Dow City officiated. Music was provided by the St. Patrick's Choir with Marie Heller as organist. Soloist was a great granddaughter, Cindy Kenkel of Dow City. Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Richard Siemer, Ronnie Jochims, Lisa Jochims, Barbara Kenkel, Kristy Probasco and Lynda Jochims. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap.

Christine (Hadenfeld) Wittmaack (1896 - 2003)

Christine Wittmaack was born January 7, 1896, the daughter of Andreas and Wilhelmine Neumann Hadenfeld. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Friday, March 7, 2003 at the age of 107.

Christine was born in Denison, where she grew up. She was baptized in Christ on September 20, 1896 at the Zion Lutheran Church and later confirmed there on March 27, 1910, also receiving her education at Zion's parochial school.

After completing her education, she worked in several positions in the Denison area including clerking at the Balle Brodersen Department Store, as a housekeeper for the Kuehnle family and in the meat department at Thrifty Grocery Store for several years. In later years she worked for Jack Boettger at the Joe Mart Steak House in Denison.

On November 15, 1921, Christine was united in marriage to William Wittmaack in Denison. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts and later moved to a farm near Schleswig before returning to Denison where Bill and Christine operated a dairy business. The couple were blessed with three children.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed tatting and socializing over coffee and cards with her family and friends. She was always playing with her grandchildren, and found it a joy to take them fishing.

Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, son, Melvin, a grandson, Danny Wittmaack and son-in-law, Keith Waldron, and seven brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Lucille Waldron of Schleswig; Deloris Meyer and her husband, Glen of Carroll; her daughter-in-law, Norma Wittmaack of Lincoln, Nebraska; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist, Geraldine Dankert provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Kevin Christie singing "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Amazing Grace". Those serving as pallbearers were: Melvyn Wittmaack, Robert Wittmaack, Krista Wittmaack, Karen Skadeland, Randy Waldron, Janet Janning, Brent Waldron, Brian Meyer and Gail Meyer.

Clara Hattie Augusta (Schmadeke) Hansohn (1898 - 1990)

Clara Hattie Augusta Hansohn was born May 3, 1898, the daughter of Henry and Wanda van Tuil Schmadeke, and died June 16, 1990 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 92 years.

Clara was born on a farm in Otter Creek Township near Schleswig, Iowa, where she grew up and received her education. She was Baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township by Rev. C. Runge, and Confirmed in the Lutheran Faith March 31, 1912 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, by the Rev. Wm. Frese.

February 23, 1930, Clara and Albert Hansohn were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa by the Rev. E.F. Schwitter. After their marriage, they lived on a farm in Stockholm Township and were blessed with one daughter. They remained on the farm until 1957 when they retired and moved to Kiron.

For several years before Alberts death, Clara and Albert lived at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where Clara continued to live after the death of her husband in 1984.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, two sisters, two brothers, and one great granddaughter. Survivors include: her daughter Maxine and her husband Wilbert Namanny of Kiron; six grandchildren; John Namanny of Kiron; Kathleen and husband Michael Lickteig of Kiron, Debra and husband Reggie Bruhn of Schleswig; Rebecca and husband Mitchell Schwarz of Schleswig, Pamela and husband Charles Lackman of Denison; and James Namanny and wife Kelley of Kiron. Also surviving are: nine great grandchildren; one brother Edwin Schmadeke of Eventide Lutheran Home and his wife Dorothy; and one sister Eleanor and husband Gay Howrey of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held June 19, 1990 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township with interment in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Hilmer Hafner officiated at the services with Mrs. Hilmer Hafner as organsit and Mr. Henry Henningsen as soloist. Solo selections were: "How great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages". The Congregational Hymn was "I'm But a Stranger Here". Serving as pallbearers were: James Namanny, John Namanny, Michael Lickteig, Reggie Bruhn, Mitchell Schwarz and Charles Lackman. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service at Denison, Iowa.

Clara M. (Lenz) Mundt (1899 - 1990)

Clara M. Mundt, the daughter of William and Otellia Reitz Lenz was born Sept. 10, 1899, on the family farm in Crawford County and died May 29, 1990, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 90 years.

She was baptized a Christian on Oct. 1, 1899, and confirmed March 16, 1913, in the Lutheran Faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by the Rev. Wm. Frese. While a young girl, she lived on the farm with her parents and received her education from the Paradise Township Country School.

Clara was united in marriage to Barney Mundt on Nov. 10, 1918, at Zion Lutheran Church by the Rev. Wm. Frese. They made their home on Barney's farm south of Denison and their union was blessed with one son.

She occupied her time caring for her home, and enjoyed socializing. Additionally, she enjoyed cooking and baking and reading. She was particularly fond of the time spent with her grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, and had a deep faith in her Lord.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Barney; one great granddaughter, Emilie Marie Anast; two brothers, Alden and Frank and one sister, Lottie Steager. Survivors include her son Robert and his wife, Sally of Broomfield, Colo.; three grandchildren, Cynthia Anast, Deborah Bassett and Randall Mundt; five great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Lula Lenz of Denison and Lillian Lenz of Sealbeach, Calif.

Funeral services were held Friday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Pastor Kurt Kaiser officiated at the services with interment in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Karen Kahl was organist and Heniy Henningsen, soloist. The solo selection was "How Great Thou Art" and the congregational hymns were "First Love Divine, all Love Excelling" and "Abide With Me." Serving as pallbearers were Barry Mundt, Michael Mundt, Patrick Houston, Thomas Carlyle, Wayne Schultz and Rodney Miller. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Service in Denison.

Daisy Dean (Smith) Huskey (1887 - 1978)

Daisy Dean Huskey was born on January 12, 1887 near Vail, Iowa, the daughter of Noah and Emily Smith. She died on December 13, 1978, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 91. Daisy was raised on a family farm and received her formal education in the rural schools near her home.

On January 14, 1914, she was united in marriage to William Huskey at Denison, Iowa. They made their first home on a farm near Vail. Later in 1923 they moved to Deloit where William operated an implement business.

In 1968, William died and Daisy continued to make Deloit her home until 1971 when she entered a nursing home. For the past four years she has been a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Daisy was preceded in death by one son in infancy, two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include, two sons, Harold of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Merrell of Omaha, Nebraska, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also by one brother William Smith of Deloit and by a number of nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Dorothy Dahleen of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 16, 1978, at 2:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home, Denison, Iowa. The Rev. Dennis Baily of the United Methodist Church officiated at the services. Dena (Alders) Schultz (1896 - 1983)

Dena Schultz was born on March 2, 1896, near Alton, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna Hutjes Alders, She died on Thursday morning, December 1, 1983, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 87.

Dena spent her formative years on a family farm near Alton, Iowa. She received her formal education in the rural schools near her home. After graduating from the Alton High School, she completed her nurses training in Sioux City, Iowa. Prior to her marriage she did private duty nursing.

On April 20, 1932, Dena was united in marriage to John Schultz in Sioux City, Iowa. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. In 1953, they moved to a farm near Kiron. After retiring in 1966, they moved to Denison. Due to failing health, they entered Manilla Manor in April of 1982. With the desire to be closer to home, they moved to Eventide in April of this year.

In addition to her parents, Dena was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include, her husband John of Denison, one son John Jr. and his wife Mary, three grandsons, Rollie Schultz, Paul Schultz and Steven Schultz all of Kiron, and two granddaughters, Lynne, Mrs. Ted Hartsock of Davenport and Robin, Mrs. Brian Soll of Kiron. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren and two sisters, Anna Alders of Los Angeles and Minnie Duistermars of Glendale, California as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 3, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen served as organist with Mrs. Rubie Kastner as soloist. Hymns included "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord". Pallbearers were Virgene Schultz, Freddie Friedrichsen, Clarence Bartlett, Abe Gronau, Gerald Gronau and Verlin Koch.

Dora (Mesenbrink) Blunk (1889 - 1992)

Dora Blunk, 102, of Anthon, died Sunday, January 19, 1992, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Correctionville. Services were at 10.30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Michael Harman officiating. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, near Kiron. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mrs. Blunk was born April 20, 1889, in Crawford County, near Charter Oak, the daughter of Fredrick and Rosena (Harms) Mesenbrink.

She married William Blunk Feb. 13, 1912, in Denison. The couple farmed in the Ute, Charter Oak and Denison areas and moved to a farm near Anthon in 1943. He died March 7, 1960. Mrs. Blunk was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Harold of Anthon and Donald and his wife, Joyce, of Kiron; three daughters, Lucille and her husband, Herb Schwartz, and Irene and her husband, Walt Schneider, all of Salton Sea, Calif., and Dorothy O'Neal of Pico Rivera, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter; three grandsons; and a sister and live brothers.

Pallbearers were David Blunk, Jeff Blunk, Mike Blunk, Tim Blunk, Mark Blunk and Chad Blunk. Dora Blunk was a great-aunt of Mrs. Rusch.

Dora Catharina (Peters) Schwarz (1897 - 1994)

Dorothea Catharina Schwarz was born January 2, 1897, the daughter of Franz and Caroline Rohde Peters. She died Wednesday, November 23, 1994 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-seven years and ten months.

Dorothea was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa and received her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized October 17, 1897 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township and later confirmed on March 11, 1923 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

On September 6, 1922, Dorothea was united in marriage to Arthur Schwarz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple settled in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two children. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and was a very active member of their Ladies Aid.

Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arthur in 1981; one son, Harold in 1946; three brothers and four sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Artis Christiansen and her husband, Robert of Schleswig; two granddaughters, Kay Wilken and her husband, Neil of Schleswig and Mary Jo Jessen and her husband, Robert of Onawa; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Wilken of Schleswig; Nicholas and Stephanie Jessen of Onawa; several nieces and nephews and a spcial friend, Opal Fritz of Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 26, 1994 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Wagner officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Roger Walter singing "Abide With Me" and "How Great Thou Art" and congregational hymn "Jesus, Still Lead On". Pallbearers were: Robert Christiansen, Loren Peters, Robert Jessen, Roger Baer, Neil Wilken and Dale Reese. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Dora (Petersen) Jensen (1894 - 1989)

Dora Jensen was born Nov. 11, 1894, on a farm in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, la., the daughter of Peter I. and Emile Evers Petersen. She was raised on the family farm and received her formal education in the local rural schools. Following her schooling and prior to her marriage, she was employed in domestic work for the area neighbors.

On Dec. 19, 1912, Dora was united in marriage with Louie John Jensen. They made their home on a farm in Goodrich Township until 1941, when they moved to Denison. Louie died Feb. 15, 1968, and Dora continued to make her home in Denison.

Dora died early Friday morning, Oct. 6, 1989, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 94 years, 10 months and 25 days. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison and the U.P.W. Circle of the church.

Including her parents and husband, Dora was preceded in death by one brother, Fred J. Petersen and two sisters, Caroline and Hilda Groth. Those left to cherish her memory include two nieces, Louise Maack of Denison and Eleanor Breckling of Schleswig; two nephews, Harry Groth of Schleswig and Arnold Petersen of Cheyenne, Wyo.; friends Alvin and Ethel Dixon of Denison, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, with Rev. James G. Cramer officiating. Vocalist Henry Henningsen sang "Just As I Am" and "How Great Thou Art." Ann Voggesser served as organist. Pallbearers included LeRoy Fredericks, Hans Clausen, Vern Hintz, Verl Bartlett, Tom Groth and Arlo Jensen. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery. Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Doretta (Miller) Hansen (1893 - 1978)

Doretta Hansen was born March 25, 1893 near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Dorathea Miller. She died May 17, 1978 at Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, at the age of 85.

Doretta was baptized and later confirmed into the Christian faith. She attended rural schools near the farm where her family lived. At the completion of her formal education she worked with the family as she was one of 13 children.

On June 2, 1912 Doretta was united in marriage to Henry Hansen in the family home near Schleswig. Together they made their home on a farm in Soldier Township south of Schleswig for two years. They lived on various other farms before moving to Schleswig where Doretta was employed. Henry died in 1961 and Doretta continued to make her home in Schleswig where she was a member of the United Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons Earl in 1936 and Leonard in 1961, seven brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include, one foster daughter, Phyllis, Mrs. Ray Marshall of California, and three grandchildren, Richard Hansen of Schleswig, Beverly, Mrs. Kenneth Palm and Faye, Mrs. James Wellendorf, both of Ida Grove. Also by three step grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Arlo Teut, Dale Jensen, Robert Bumann, Jim Miller, Don Meyer and Roger Koch. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig.

Earl R. Welch (1895 - 1982)

Earl R. Welch was born at Lake City, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1895, the son of William J. and Ada Drais Welch. Earl's father was employed by the railroad, and at an early age the family moved to Council Bluffs where Mr. Welch's job transferred him.

Earl started his education in Council Bluffs and completed his schooling in Denison where his father was transferred when Earl was nine years of age. After his education, Earl started his own business in Denison, a bus line from the Denison Hotel to the local depot which he operated for the next few years.

On August 20, 1924, Earl was united in marriage with Ruth Patton at Rockwell City, and to this union one son, Earl D. Welch was born. They made Denison their home and after sellng his bus line business, they opened the Welch Cafe in 1925 in Dension, which they operated until 1954. During this time, Mrs. Welch taught in the country schools.

In 1936, Earl purchased some interest in farms in the area and began a farming career in which he was associated with until his death. Since 1958 he was a partner in the farming operation with his son. Earl was very active in community and civic affairs in Denison. While in business he was an active member and worker in the Denison Chamber of Commerce, was a active promoter in he development of the R.E.A., and was an instrumental participant in the sight selection and obtaining the land for the present day Denison Airport.

He was a member of the Barbershoppers singing group and in earlier years Earl and Hugo Saggau had an entertainment act that performed in the local area. Earl entered the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Nov. 8, 1982, and it was there he died Nov. 13. the time of his death he had attained the age of 87 years, nine months, and four days.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Marvin and Ben Welch, and two sisters, Mrs. Irene Winey and Mrs. Mabel Firman.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Denison; one son Earl D. Welch and his wife, Sandra of rural Denison; three grandchildren; two brothers, Theodore Welch and his wife Hollie of Sioux City, and Richard Welch and his wife Clara of Waterloo; and two sisters, Dorothy, Mrs. Roy Lundberg of Redwood City, Calif, and Emogene Welch of Tucson, Ariz. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Nov. 16, at the Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison, with Dr. L. Scott Woodworth of the First United Methodist Church in Denison officiating. Comfort in music was provided by Henry Henningsen as soloist and Mrs. Dorothy Norman as organist. Hugo Sauggau served as an honorary bearer. Pallbearers were Robert Reisz, Donald Bartlett, Ford Hawley, Wilbert Lapel, Lorne North, and John Shields. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker-Maxwell Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward C. Schroeder (1891 - 1989)

Edward Carsen Schroeder, the son of Jurgen and Johanna Lorenzen Schroeder, was born at Hohenzollern, Morgan Township, Iowa on June 12, 1891, and died on August 2, 1989 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of 98 years.

Edward attended school in Schleswig, Iowa and attended a Business College in Des Moines, Iowa for two years. He spent a short time in California after his schooling, returning to Schleswig, where he made his home until six years ago, when he entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison. His life work consisted of painting homes and farm buildings.

Edward played on the Schleswig baseball team and was an avid bowler; playing on Schleswig bowling teams. He was baptized on September 28, 1894 by Rev. F. Schug and was as member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 645 of Schleswig, having served in World War I.

Preceding Edward in death were: his parents, several brothers and sisters. His survivors include: sister-in-law Mrs. Ella Schroeder of Morningside Manor of Ida Grove, nieces, nephews, cousins, and very dear friends; Mr. And Mrs. Byron Behrmann of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 5, 1989 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Rev. Harold E. Schaible officiated at the services with interment in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. Mrs. Dorothy Jessen was organist. Congretational Hymns were "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God To Thee." American Legion and V.F.W. Post No. 645 served as pallbearers with Military services. Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of services.

Edward D. Goslar (1893 - 1988)

Edward Dietrick Goslar, the son of William and Wilhelminia Meyer Goslar, was born on August 30, 1893 near Berne, Iowa, and died, following a brief illness, on December 16, 1988 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 95 years.

Edward grew up in the Berne area and attended a rural school before attending the St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak, Iowa.

He helped on the family farm and on December 12, 1917, he and Lena Rosburg were united in marriage at the St. John's Lutheran Parsonage in Charter Oak. This union was blessed with 9 children. Edward and Lena lived in the Berne and Ute area all their married life. They retired from farming in 1955 but continued to live on the family farm.

He was a director of the Berne Coop and also a country school director for a number of years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was loved and treasured by many. At an earlier age he enjoyed participating in sports and later ,watching them.

Edward was Baptized on October 1, 1893 by Pastor Runge and later Confirmed on April 16, 1908 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at the time of his death.

Preceding Edward in death were: his parents; four brothers Fred, William, Henry, and Herman; two sisters; Freda in infancy and Bertha Eck; one daughter, Audrey Klockgether; one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, one great grandson and one son in law, Alfred Sievers.

Survivors include his wife Lena; children: Lola Mae and her husband Herbert Sievers of Ute, Wilma Sievers of Kiron, Phillip Goslar and his wife Leona of Ute, Irma and her husband LaVern Wessel of Ricketts, Lois Jean Goslar of Ute, Edward E. Goslar and his wife Lois of Ute, Shirley and her husband Norman Gosch of Ute and Ronald Goslar and his wife Lou Anna of Ute. Also surviving are a son in law, Henry Klockgether of Charter Oak; 26 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and one brother Otto Goslar of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 19, 1988 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Pastor L. C. Gebhardt officiated at the services with interment in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetary at Charter Oak.

Edward J. Jensen (1894 - 1990)

Edward J. Jensen, 96, of Ida Grove died Monday, Sept. 3, 1990, in the Horn Memorial Hospital at Ida Grove. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the United Church of Christ at Schleswig with the Rev. Jim Schatz officiating. Burial was at Morgan Township Cemetery, near Schleswig.

Mr. Jensen was born March 28, 1894, in Morgan Township, Crawford County, the son of Jacob and Lena (Struck) Jensen. He married Henrietta Tamm Nov. 15, 1922, at the Friedens Church at Schleswig. She died January 27,1947. He married Nellie Judie December 21, 1960, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He was a lifetime Ida and Crawford County farmer, having farmed Hayes Township since 1930. Mr. Jensen was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Leroy Schagt of Ida Grove; two grandchildren and their wives, Marelle and Cheryl Knudsen and Burdell and Darnelle Knudsen, all of Ida Grove; a stepgrandson and his wife, Ron and Mary Schagt of Ida Grove; a stepdaughter-in-law, Colleen Judie of DeKalb, Ill.; step-grandchildren, Tom and his wife, Yvonne Judie of Waukegan, 111., Jim and his wife Mary Judie of Ames, IA and Jacque Judie of DeKalb, Ill.; a sister, Delia Paulson of Correctionville; four sisters-in-law, Catherine, Hazel, Adela and Clara Jensen, all of Schleswig; four great-grandchil-dren; and six stepgreat-grand-children.

He was also preceeded in death by son-in-law Marven Knudsen; a granddaughter, Maretta Knudsen; five brothers, Rudolph, William, Bernhard, Hugo, and Frank; a brother-in-law, Walter Paulson; and a step-son-in-law, Roy Judie.

Arnold Brus (1905 - 1994)

Arnold, son of Otto and Emma Lage Brus, was born December 22, 1905 in Iowa Township, Crawford County. He attended rural schools in Iowa Township and Hayes Township.

On June 14, 1939 Arnold was united in marriage with Luella Kahl. Three children, Wayne, Robert, and Georgia, were born to this union. They made their home on a farm northwest of Manning in Hayes Township. In the fall of 1992 they moved to Manning.

Arnold's wife, Luella, died in January of this year; he then moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. Arnold's health deteriorated rapidly at the Plaza on Wednesday evening, July 27, 1994 at the age of 88 years, 7 months, and 5 days.

Besides his wife, Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, and by brothers, Willis and Vertus.

Survivors include his children: Wayne Brus and his wife, Joyce, of Ankeny; Robert Brus and his wife, Judy, of San Antonio, Texas; and Georgia and her husband, Dale Musfeldt, of Denver, Colorado; six grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, and Ryan Brus and Michael, Jennifer, and Sara Musfeldt; a brother, Elmer Brus, of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Arnold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. For many years he served on the Board of Directors of the Aspinwall Coop. He enjoyed fishing in Canada, bowling, and playing cards. As a young man Arnold was a member of the Harmony Boys Band and played on the Aspinwall baseball team. During those years, he also worked at painting and decorating.

Services were Saturday, July 30, 1994, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning with Pastor Robert Riggart officiating. Fern Jensen provided the organ accompaniment for the congregation singing, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives", "Amazing Grace", "I Am But A Stranger Here". Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery. Casketbearers were Arlan Jans, Richard Brus, Richard Fischer, Dean Hargens, James Meyer, Russell Ranniger. Honorary Casketbearers were Wilmer Ranniger, Art Fielwebber, Walter Lage, Harry Jansen.

Beulah (Drake) Olson (1908 - 1965)

Manning - Funeral rites for Mrs. Beulah Olson, 56, were held March 19 at the Manilla Presbyterian church at 2 p.m., Rev. Robert Arends officiating. Interment was in the Nishnabotna cemetery. She became ill at her home on March 13 and was taken to St. Anthony hospital, where she died on March 15.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Drake, she was born Oct. 27, 1908 in Shelby county south of Manilla. She attended rural schools and the Manilla school.

She was married Feb. 12, 1935 to E. G. (Ted) Olson at her home near Manilla. Since their marriage they have lived on the same farm four miles west and one mile south of Manilla. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband, three children, Arthur with the Army in Okinawa; Curtis and Barbara at home; her mother, four sisters, Mrs. John (Evelyn) Holdsworth, of Audubon; Mrs. Earl (Marian) Justice, Manilla; Mrs. S. A. (Hazel) DeWees, Cedar Rapids and Mrs. J. H. (Ruth) McKinney, Denver, Colo.

Bernhard Jensen (1896 - 1978)

Bernhard Jensen Dies In Denison

Bernhard Jensen was born on March 24, 1896 near Schleswig, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Lena Struck Jensen. He died on Monday evening, July 24, 1978, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 82.

Barney was raised on a family farm and received his formal education in the rural schools in Morgan Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. He served in the United States Army during World War I which included a tour of duty in France. At the time of his discharge he returned to the Schleswig area where he farmed.

On November 16, 1931, Barney was united in marriage to Hazel Curd. Together they made their home on a farm in Morgan Township until 1944 when they retired from the farm and moved to Schleswig.

Barney served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Mutual Insurance for 18 years, 10 of which he served as president. He was a life-long member of the United Church of Christ serving on the Church Board, the Spiritual Council and the Brotherhood.

In addition to his parents, Barney was preceded in death by two brothers, R. C. Jensen and William Jensen.

Survivors include his wife Hazel of Schleswig, one daughter, Georgia Gail, Mrs. Andy Ortiz of Santa Fe, New Mexico and one granddaughter. Also by three brothers, Edward of Ida Grove, Iowa, Hugo and Frank both of Schleswig and one sister, Mrs. Della Paulsen of Correctionville, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 27, 1978, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Full Military Rites and pallbearers were provided by the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W.

Bernhard F. Loewe (1896 - 1988)

Bernhard F. Loewe was born April 28, 1896 the son of August and Lena Petersen Loewe in Crawford County, Ia., and died Saturday, March 12, 1988 at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, at the age of 91.

He was baptized as an infant, and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on March 13, 1912 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He received his education in rural schools and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in France in 1918 during WWI.

After returning home from his tour in Europe, he was united in marriage to Meta Meyer on Dec. 15, 1920 at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage by Reverend William Freese, and together they made their home on a farm in Crawford County where they lived until his retirement in the early 1950's. For a few years, they lived in Denison but ill health and advancing years forced them to move to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, where they remained until his death.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, two sisters and one brother; and is survived by: his wife Meta of the Manning Plaza; and two sisters; Leona Mendenhall of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and Freda Bixenstine of Cass Lake, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 14, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with the Reverend Robert Riggert officiating the service and the grave side rites and military honors given by the VFW Ninus L. Hunt Post 2504. Burial was made in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Mrs. Jean Cornelius served as organist for congregational singing of "God Will Take Care of You." Serving as pallbearers were: Scott Meyer, Ted Ahrenholtz, Tim Ahrenholtz, Robert Meyer, Leonard Ahrenholtz and Earl Scheuermann. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

Bernice (Backhaus) Bruhn (1911 - 1997)

Bernice Bruhn was born August 30, 1911, the daughter of William and Emilie Schumann Backhaus. She died Sunday, August 10, 1997 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison at the age of eighty-five.

Bernice was born on a farm in Morgan Township near Schleswig. She was baptized in Christ and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She received her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, she helped her family on the farm for a few years.

On March 6, 1929, Bernice was united in marriage to Irwin Bruhn at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and was blessed with the birth of two children. The couple settled on Irwin's family farm where they farmed together for fifty years before retiring and moving to Denison.

In her leisure time, Bernice enjoyed gardening and particularly enjoyed sewing. She worked hard on the farm helping her husband and loved chickens and milking cows. Bernice was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who cared for her family with devotion. She had a deep and abiding faith in her Lord and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Irwin of Denison; one daughter, Donna Groth and her husband, Orville of Battle Creek, Iowa; one son, Larry Bruhn of Denison; four grandchildren, Ronald Groth and his wife, Jacqueline of Metamora, Illinois; Roger Groth and his wife, Phyllis of Battle Creek; Linda Clark and her husband, William of Omaha, Nebraska; Dianne Groth and her fiancé David Heuvelmans of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren, Robert and Rachel Groth of Metamora; Joel, Jerry, David and Dennis Groth of Battle Creek; her brother, Harry Backhaus of Denison; and one sister, Ella Hamann of Schleswig.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 1997, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the services and graveside rites at Morgan Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. Soloist Henry Henningsen sang "Beautiful Savior" accompanied by Karen Kahl, organist. Congregational hymns were "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Pallbearers were: Virtus Brockman, Curtiss Bruhn, Loren Lee, Dennis Backhaus, David Bruhn, and Bill Clark. The family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.

Bernice L. (Bramstedt) Gronau (1916 - 2005)

Bernice L. Gronau was born November 16, 1916, the daughter of Fred and Amanda Holtorf Bramstedt. She died Saturday, March 26, 2005 at her home in Schleswig, Iowa at the age of eighty-eight.

Bernice was born near Ute, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on December 17, 1916 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on April 13, 1930. She received her education in a rural school near her home.

On May 30, 1948, she was united in marriage to Everett Gronau at St. John Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. The couple made their home on the family farm near Kiron where they farmed.

She was very active throughout the years, keeping busy while helping her husband on the farm and participating in many church activities. As a member, Bernice served as organist at St. John Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. On February 1, 1962, Bernice became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and began playing the organ for services on April 19, 1964. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church Ladies Aid and would open each Ladies Aid meeting by playing the piano. She also sang in the choir for many years, and was a member of the Quilters Club. In her spare time, she enjoyed going on trips with the Prestige Club at Farmers State Bank and Bank Iowa, watching Lawrence Welk and listening to polka music. She enjoyed having lunch at Cheeta's Bar & Grill in Schleswig, never missing a day and making trips to Denison to have lunch at KFC each Sunday.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett in 1972; her brother-in-law Eldred Gronau and his wife, Marcella; and her special friend, Hans Clausen.

She is survived by her niece, Janice Siebe of Schleswig, Iowa; and her nephew, LaWayne Gronau and his wife, Pam of Ida Grove, Iowa; several great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the music accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Beautiful Savior," "I'm But A Stranger Here," and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." Those serving as pallbearers were Mark and Klynn Slechta, Brittani Briggle, Layne Gronau, Cory and Shari Thies, Dalton Rupert, and Kelli Rupert. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.
