Old Settlers Who Passed Away

1912-1936

From Denison Newpapers

The Old Settlers Picnic

A picnic was held in Crawford county each year, generally toward the end of August for any and all folks to attend and enjoy a day of food and fellowship. There were games, speeches, food and music to help all enjoy the day.

One of the events which took place each year was the reading, by the secretary, of a list of folks that had passed away since the previous year's picnic. The listing was read to the gathering and then given to the newspaper so it could be published. The list does not include death dates nor is it in alphabetical order. The names are listed in order of death, beginning from one picnic and continuing to the next.

Although we can get an idea of when one may have died from their location in the list, some folks may get confused when they see the title as listing deaths for a certain year. Generally the first one-third of those listed passed away in the year previous to the title year. The list is a great tool to help find relatives and to narrow the time of death to one or two years. In a few cases, the person may have died in another location but due to their strong ties with Crawford county, they were remembered at the reading.
