Books of Clinton County

The Clinton Library Lyons Branch is where all the genealogical information is.  They are always adding new stuff. They are located at 105 Main Ave., Clinton IA 52732. Ph: 563-242-5355 email: They are open Wed 12-7 and Thurs, Fri, Sat from 9-5. You are invited to come and spend the day, bring a lunch and enjoy what they have to offer.

ILL -- A genealogist's best friend

In my opinion, one of the most overlooked and underused resources is Inter-Library Loan (ILL), especially with everyone surfing the net and trying to find the info online.  If there is a book, magazine, microfilm/fiche, newspaper, etc. available, 10 to 1 you can get it via ILL.  So, find out about it on the internet, but talk to your librarian about getting it!

The following organizations also have major collections or services for genealogical researchers:

The State Historical Society of Iowa Library has manuscript records as well as numerous published sources, censuses, and newspapers.  The archives division collects manuscript records of the state, including government, land and military records.  They also have family histories in book form.  A helpful guide to these sources, available from the LDS is Guide to Manuscripts by Katherine Harris (FHL book 977.7A3i; computer number 174788).

The National Archives -- Central Plains Region branch in Kansas City has the records of regional federal offices for Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, including federal naturalizations, American Indian records, census, military and immigration records.

Periodicals for Iowa researchers

The PERiodical Source Index (PERSI)  partially index genealogical periodicals (except the Iowa Queries).  Ask your library if they have it -- Then see what you can get by inter-library loan.

The major genealogical periodicals and magazines for Iowa research are listed below.  Many of them have indexes either published separately or included in each volume.

The Annals of Iowa.1893-. Published by the State Historical of Iowa City.  This periodical contains much biographical and historical information and has cumulative indexes through 1991. Volumes 1-8 are on 6 FHL films beginning with 967572 item 20.

The Palimpsest.  1920-. Published by the State Historical Society of Iowa at Iowa City.  This periodical is now called Iowa Heritage Illustrated.
