1.  JAMES1 KEARNEY was born 1817 in , Ireland, and died June 13, 1897 in Welton Township, Clinton, Iowa.  He married BRIDGET WALSH July 22, 1845 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa.

From: "The Search for Missing Friends - Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed in the Boston Pilot" Volume II 1851-1853 p. 26 8 March 1851.  Of Jeremiah Dunigan, from parish My Ross, Roscarbery, Co. Cork, when last heard of he was in New Orleans.  Information on him will be thank fully received by his sister, Johanna, or his cousin, John Burk, care of Mr. James Kearney, Davenport, Iowa.  

MARRIAGE: License Number 178 p. 48 September 20, 1845 J.A.M. Pelamourgues.  Ceremony perform ed on 22 July 1845 Page 5 Marriage Book 1839-1882.  

NATURALIZATION: Scott County District Court Volume C, p. 186 Tuesday 31 October 1848. Swore intention to be naturalized Friday 14 March 1845.  

1850 US Census taken 22 August 1850 lists James as 30, A cartman with Real Estate valued at $ 350 in District No. 4 of Scott Co.  

Joyce Giaquinta, Manuscript Librarian of the Iowa State Historical Department in Iowa City, wrote on July 31, 1980 - Enclosed are copies of the tax record for James Karney for 1854 and 1 853.  He was also listed in 1849, 1850 and 1851 with the same property.  In 1849 he had 2 cows valued at $16, 4 hogs, valued at $4.  He paid $1.25 tax including poll tax.  In 1851 he had 1 cow, 1 horse and 1 pleasure carriage.  The value of the 40 acres was $80 in 1849 and $14 0 in 1851.

There were town lots listed in Davenport in 1849 and 1851 which do not appear in 1853.  He owned lots 6 and 7 in Block 52, valued at $25 in 1849 and $300 in 1851.  Part of the section was SW1/4 SE1/4 of Section 2 Twp 78 Range 3 valued at $400 in 1853.  In 1854 he had lot 6 in Block 52 valued at $600.  

On 11 February 1847 Harvey & Pelagil Leonard conveyed to James Kearney lots 6 and 7 in block No. 52 in the City of Davenport for $100.  This was recorded on p. 246 on 13 February 1847 .  On 24 April 1855 James & Bridget Kearney conveyed to Ellen Fitzgerald lot 6 in Block No. 52 on Rock Island Street of Davenport for $1,000  

On 1 February 1848 the United States of America conveyed to James Kearney the SW 1/4 of the S E 1/4 of Section 2 in Twp. 78N of Range 3 of the 5th Principal Meridian 40 acres Certificate 4784.  

In the county election for coroner of August 1851, J. Carney, the Democrat, defeated T. V. Blakemore, the Whig 447 votes to 418 votes.  In the election for coroner of August 1853, James Karney, the Democrat was defeated by L. B. Collamer, the Temperance Party candidate, 883 votes t o 347 votes.  History of Scott County Iowa Interstate Publishing Co. Chicago 1882  

On 9 March 1854 Samuel & Ann Hoffmann conveyed to James Kearney a strip of land 15 ft. wide a long the north side of SE 1/4 of SE of section 2 in Twp 78 N of Range 3 east of 5th Principal Meridian.  Kearney agreed to build a good and substantial fence along the south line of the strip of land.  p. 188 Book "L" of Deeds.  

On 7 April 1854 James & Bridget Kearney conveyed to Hans Detlef Hamann the SW 1/4 of the SE 1 /4 of Section 2 of Twp. 78 No of Range 3 East of the 5th PM containing 40 acres also a strip of land 15 feet wide along the North Side of the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 same as purchased fro m Samuel Hoffmann for $1,000 recorded on p. 245 of Book "L" of Land Deeds.

1860 US Census page 140 taken 1 August 1860 in Welton Twp. of Clinton Co. lists James as 45 y ears with Real Estate valued at $500.  

1870 US Census page 24 taken 28 July 1870 in DeWitt Twp. of Clinton Co. lists James as 50 years with real estate valued at $5,000 and personal property valued at $1,800.  

1880 US Census page 30 taken 17 June 1880 in DeWitt Twp. of Clinton Co. lists James as 65 years old.  His is living with his son's family.

1870 US Census page 24 DeWitt Twp. Clinton Co. taken 28 July 1870 lists Bridget as 55 years old, born in Ireland.

James Kearney2.  JAMES2 KEARNEY (JAMES1) was born July 23, 1849 in Davenport, Scott, Iowa, and died December 13, 1927 in De Witt, Clinton, Iowa.  He married SUSAN R. CROWLEY January 6, 1877 in Lanesboro, Fillmore, Minnesota, daughter of JAMES CROWLEY and MARY BURKE.

1895 Iowa Census Volume 313, page 314, line 20 DeWitt Twp. Clinton Co. lists James Kearney a s 46 years old.  

In a letter, Mary Poquett said that he liked and made dandelion wine.  Played fiddle.  Went t o church on Christmas and Easter.  Became senile.  Died of a malfunctioning kidney.

DEATH: Certificate; Book 1 page 132; Clinton Co. Iowa says that his mother was Mary Kelly an d that his cause of death was Myocarditis.  Attending physician George Scanlan.

Mary Poquette said in a letter that she had dark curly hair, high blood pressure gave her severe headaches.
