Kramer's Market, established 1869
Elkader

In 1867 Anton Kramer and his aunt Francisca Kramer immigrated from Neubistritz or Neu Beustritz, Austria, to Clayton County, Iowa. Anton’s uncle Joseph Kramer was already operating a meat market in Elkader, Iowa, and Anton joined him as a butcher. In 1872 while on a marketing trip in Milwaukee, Joseph died of a heart attack leaving a widow Maria Ludovia Gehrlein Kramer and six children in Elkader, Iowa. This family lived in the large stone farm house at the top of the Kramer hill.

Anton took over the butcher shop and later employed his brother John as well as his uncle Karl. The business thrived and meat was shipped by rail to cities in the east. Anton was involved bringing electricity and the railroad to Elkader and also starting a new bank, the First National Bank, in Elkader. His wife was Caroline Gehrlein, a sister of Maria who had married his uncle Joseph.

His aunt Francisca married William Osa (Osie) and they had two children, Robert who died in infancy and Marie Bertha Osa who married Fred L. Stinger.
