~The contributor included this note with the photo: "This is an old post card that I found in Mom's genealogy material. It is a picture of her great aunt and uncle's home that stood near Giard. It was the home of John and Christina (Arnold) Hartwick. It was built about 1875 . It was torn down in about 1984."

Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Hartwick (above
right), of Giard, and their sons, John and Dale, will observe
quietly on June 22 the 100th anniversary of their farm. They
stand by a lamp made from lumber in the original farm home. Their
present home, consisting of 22 rooms, was built in 1886 and is
one of Clayton county's largest. The farm was Mr. Hartwick's
grandfathers, Conrad Hartwick, who came to this country from
Hessen Castle, Germany. Huge farm homes like shown (above left)
are not unusual sights in Clayton county, especially in the area
known as the Garnavillo prairie. Big farm houses were the style
about 50 years ago. The home in the above photo is that of Mr.
and Mrs. T. E. Hartwick of Giard, Ia. It consists of 22 rooms.
