Testimonies
During the litigation about the Leslie railroad station
the following people gave testimonies, often telling their past places of
residence.
*according to W.B. Emory's testimony Groveland (in
Green Bay twp.) was the same place as Phillipsburg.
- G.W. Clark- assessor,
lived 4.25 miles southwest from Phillipsburg for 20 yrs.
- A.J. Crew - lived 1.5 miles southwest of Leslie for 36 yrs,
own 294 acres
- W.B. Emory - lived 1/2 mi. south and 2.5 mi. west of Groveland
for 17 yrs.
- I.N. Gardner - bought & shipped livestock since 1884, lived
5 mi. northeast of Greenbay. Lived in that area since 1857.
- G.B. Hall - merchant
- R.W. Harper - lived in Des Moines, bought grain in the area
- R. W. Harper - bookkeeper for railroad line
- W.S. Hedrick - present postmaster at Lacelle, lived there since
1879, has farmed, merchant
- Sol Hidy - lived in county for 20 years, at present location
half mile east of Green Bay for 7 yrs., own 250 acres at Green Bay
- E.H. Hutsonpillar - lived at Lacelle from April 1885 to April
1888 where I ran a store, bought grain and weighed stock. Now life in Osceola.
- Frank I. Jones - lived in Clarke county with his father Reuben
Jones
- Ruben Jones - lived 8 miles nw of Leslie (4.5 mi. n of Phillipsburg).
Own 160 acres, have lived in county most of the time since 1854.
- J.B. Kelley - lived 1 mile w and 1/4 s of Greenbay for past
32 yrs. (1861 or 1862)
- J.H. May - merchant, lived at Lacelle
- Matthew McCann - Moved in March this year to 1.5 miles nw of
Leslie. Before then lived 2 miles nw of Weldon since 1874.
- N. McNichols - 74 yrs old, have lived at Phillipsburg for 8
or 10 years about 75 yards from the depot on a farm
- Phillip Miller - have lived at Phillipsburg for 8 yrs, 12 yrs
before that at Greenbay, and Illinios before that.
- E. Montgomery - have lived 2 miles se of Phillipsburg for 35
yrs (2.5 miles from Leslie)
- John Newton - railroad manager
- J.P. Noel - livestock buyer & shipper
- H.Q. Orr - have lived 1.5 miles se of Phillipsburg for 31 yrs.
Own 160 acres.
- David Overton - have lived one mile west of Greenbay for about
40 yrs.
- Thomas Pollock - have lived one quarter mile from Leslie for
17 yrs.
- A.C. Rarick - lived 2.5 miles due west of Greenbay since 1856.
- W.R. Sanders - lived 1 miles and a fourth north and half mile
west of Leslie.
- T.C. Sherwood - superintendent of the railroad line
- A.P. Smith - lived a mile from Leslie since 1873 (1.25 mi. from
Greenbay), own 200 acres
- Henry Stivers - was superintendent of D.O. and S.R. and helped
establish Leslie station, editor of LEADER
- John C. Tallman - postmaster at Weldon , lived Weldon 2 yrs,
Van Wert 3 yrs, before that Leslie about 2 yrs, and Greenbay about a yr
.before that. (in that part of the country for past 21 yrs.) in hotel business
- Eden Yates - lived on a farm where the station was established
since 1874, sold it to railroad for $80 (neighbors contributed some)
