BERNARD L. BENNETT

BERNARD BENNETT REPORTED RECOVERING FROM WOUNDS - Corporal Bernard Bennett, son of Wilbur Bennett of Quimby, was reported making normal improvement following serious wounds received during the Italian campaign.

Bernard's father received an official letter from the War Department reporting this:

"I am pleased to inform you that a report has been received from the theater operations that on Jan. 15, your son, Corporal Bernard L. Bennett was making normal improvements.  You have my assurance that when additional information is received showing a change in his condition, you will be notified immediately."

Adjutant General J.A. Ptio

Such terse messages were all too common during the war years.  Anxious families awaited additional information to confirm their worst fears or to set their minds at rest.
