First Generation

1. Timothy O'BRIEN was born about 1790 in Ireland.1,2 In the 1860 census, Bennezette Township, Butler County, Iowa, Timothy's age was recorded as 75, therefore born in 1785. However, the transcription of Nettleton Cemetery where he's buried, recorded his age as 74 at the time of his death in 1864. If he was 74 at death, he was born about 1790. Therefore, Timothy's birth year between 1785 and 1790 reflects the contradiction between these two sources. He died on 27 January 1864 in Butler County, Iowa.2 He was buried in Catholic Cemetery, Bennezette Township, Butler County, Iowa.3 A brief article in The Iowa Recorder newspaper (Greene, Iowa) published on 17 July 1929, page 19, describes some of Timothy and Catherine's history. "Timothy O'Brien and wife came to Bennezette in 1857 with their four children, George, John, Patrick and Catherine. The last one was known as Kate Newburn. Mr. O'Brien a practical Catholic, tried very hard to locate a church in Bennezette [township] before the church was built in Dougherty, but it was decided to build on the Coldwater [river]. He donated two acres of his farm [for] a [little] cemetery...in Bennezette where his remains and the remains of his venerable wife and other early Catholic pioneers are buried. His descendants are the O'Brien families, residing in this community." Timothy died at the age of 79. The small Bennezette Cemetery is located in the northeast quarter of section 21 in Bennezette Township, Butler County.

Timothy O'BRIEN and Catherine were married about 1832 in Ireland. Catherine was born about 1802 in Ireland.1,2 Sources indicate various dates of birth for Catherine. In the 1860 census, she was recorded as 70 years of age, therefore, born in 1790. However, the Nettleton Cemetery, where she's buried, recorded her age as 65 at the time of her death in 1867, therefore born in 1802. She died on 5 July 1867 in Butler County, Iowa.2 She was buried in Catholic Cemetery, Bennezette Township, Butler County, Iowa.3 Catherine is buried next to her husband, in the small Catholic cemetery, Bennezette Township. Timothy O'BRIEN and Catherine had the following children:

2 i. George O'BRIEN was born in 1833 in At sea, on the Atlantic Ocean.1,2 He died on 11 March 1881 in Iowa.4

As mentioned above, in 1857, when George was about 24 years old, he migrated west with his parents and siblings from Illinois to Bennezette Township in Butler County. He homesteaded in section 21 in Bennezette. George filed two homestead applications for land in section 21. The first was filed in 1860 taking over the Bounty Land given to Archibald Smith for his military service. That parcel was for the west 1/2 of the southwest quarter, section 21 and the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter, section 21, amounting to a total of 120 acres. Then in 1861, George filed homestead for the northeast quarter of the southwest quarter, section 21, which was a 40 acre parcel. This quarter section farm of 160 acres was the farm of Timothy and Catherine O'Brien and their son, George. A small portion of the farm located in the northeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 21 was set aside as the Bennezette Catholic cemetery, where Timothy and Catherine O'Brien are buried along with a few other early pioneers.

Later, in 1876, at the age of about 43, George moved to Coldwater Township, in Butler County, where he died in 1881, at the age of 48. He may have retired from farming at a young age because of poor health. He apparently never married, since he was recorded as single in the 1880 census. At that time, he was living with his brother , John, who was single and "crippled" with asthma, according to the 1880 census. Not long after George died, his brother John married in 1881. George signed his will in 1881 in Butler County, Iowa.5 According to George's will, probated in 1881, he left all property to his sister, Catherine. A later codicil or addition to his will also provided some assets, apparently some farm land, to Julia (McCormick) O'Brien, wife of George's brother, John.

Second Generation

3. John O'BRIEN (Timothy-1) was born in March 1836 in Canada.6,7 He died on 28 October 1924 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.6 He was buried on 30 October 1924 in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.6

A poignant and heartfelt obituary for John O'Brien, appeared in The Iowa Recorder on 5 November 1924, on page 1. "The Last Leaf -- The passing of John O'Brien removes another of those sturdy men, whose footsteps beat the pioneer pathway in this vicinity. It also ends the earthly career of the last member of the family of Timothy and Catherine O'Brien who came here while the deer and buffalo still roamed the unplowed prairie."

"John O'Brien began life at Ottawa, Canada in 1836. At the age of eleven years, he moved to Ogdensburg, N.Y. where he resided with his parents until 1853 and then removed with them to Marengo, Illinois where he remained for four years. In 1857 the O'Brien family came to Bennezette. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy O'Brien consisted of four children, Patrick, George, John and Kate. The parents died many years ago and are buried in the Catholic cemetery in Bennezette."

"The family of O'Briens shared all the privations and hardships of the early settlers. Their luxuries were few, and yet amid the hard struggle of wringing from the stubborn prairie a meager living, they enjoyed the real friendship and hospitality that the pioneers knew. It was that spirit that ennobled manhood and made companionship so dear. Like a golden twilight still lingers the kind deeds of Mrs. Kate Newbern, sister of John O'Brien. Of her it could be said, like Whittier said of his sister; How many a poor one's blessing went; With her beneath the low green tent; Whose curtain never outward swings" [Kate died 15 years earlier from cancer.]

"The subject of this sketch was married in 1881 to Miss Julia McCormick, who died July 1st of this year. Their family consisted of four children, George, of Cedar Falls; Mrs. Edward Hanley, of Greene; Mrs. Bessie Hanley, who preceded her parents in death and John Jr. Seven grandchildren also survive him. The funeral was held Thursday, from St. Mary's church, with Rev. Father Hogan officiating and his remains were laid to rest in St. Mary's cemetery."

"In glancing over the long roster of years that were allotted to Mr. O'Brien what imagination could compass the changes that took place on this earth since his birth. Who would dare to trench upon the domain of prophecy and foretell the marvelous inventions of his time. During all those years, Mr. O'Brien followed the trend of events, keeping step with other early settlers, his neighbors."

"After his marriage in 1881, he settled on the home farm, now occupied by his son, John. In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien moved to Greene and resided here until now both have passed away. Now that the last leaf of the pioneers of the O'Brien family has been garnered into death's harvest and they are resting on the dreamless pillow, we who live on are prompted to emulate their lives and prove the metal that is in us." John died at the age of 88.

John O'BRIEN and Julia MC CORMICK were married in 1881 in Iowa.6 Julia MC CORMICK was born in August 1849 in Ireland.7 She died on 1 July 1924 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.6 She was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.6 John O'BRIEN and Julia MC CORMICK had the following children:

Catharine "Kate" O'BRIEN was born on 13 April 1884 in McGregor, Iowa.7,12 She died on 13 September 1962 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.12 She was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.12 Kate and Edward Hanley were married 29 October 1914. They farmed in Butler County, Iowa until their retirement when they moved into Greene, Iowa. Kate was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, her parents, her brother George and her sister "Bessie" (Elizabeth O'Brien Hanley who died before 1924). She was survived by her brother John Jr., nieces and nephews. It appears that Kate and Ed did not have children.

9 iv. John O'BRIEN Jr. was born in December 1886 in Iowa.7 John O'Brien, Jr., farmed 80 acres in section 25, Butler County, Iowa. However, the farm was owned by his father John O'Brien, Sr.

4. Catherine "Kate" O'BRIEN (Timothy-1) was born in February 1842 in Ottawa, Canada.1,8,9 She died on 13 February 1909 in Waverly, Iowa.8 She was buried on 15 February 1909 in Coldwater Catholic Church Cemetery, Butler County, Iowa.13

At the age of 69, Catherine passed away from cancer. Her obituary appeared in The Iowa Recorder, on 17 February 1909, page 1. "Obituary -- Catherine O'Brien was born in Ottawa, Canada in [year unreadable] and died at the Mercy hospital, Waverly, Iowa, February 13, 1909, aged 69. The deceased moved with her parents from the place of her birth to Ogdensburg, New York in 1847 and lived there until 1853 at which time they moved to Merengo, Illinois and from there moved to Iowa in 1857 and settled in Bennezette Township, Butler county."

"She was married to William Newburn April 29, 1881 at Waverly, Iowa [William's obituary gave their wedding date as 1877] then moving to Coldwater township, residing there until November 3 of last year when she went to Mercy hospital at Waverly, remaining there until the time of her death. She is survived by one brother, John O'Brien and one adopted son, Perry Newburn also by two nephews, Robert and Tim O'Brien all of Coldwater township."

"The funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city [Greene, Iowa], Monday at 10 o'clock a.m., Rev. Father Sheehy delivering the funeral address and paying a loving tribute to the deceased. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at Coldwater by the side of her husband who died five years ago."

"Mrs. Newburn died from the effects of a cancer on her lip and suffered untold agony from this terrible affliction for a long time, no medical aid being able to reach her case. She leaves behind many who will feel deeply her loss as a kind friend and neighbor. The Recorder joins in extending sympathy to the sorrowing ones."

A Card of Thanks was published in the same edition of The Iowa Recorder following her obituary. "We desire to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many kind friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted and comforted us in our late bereavement. Perry Newburn, John O'Brien and Family, Timothy O'Brien, Robert O'Brien."

Catherine "Kate" O'BRIEN and William C. NEWBURN were married in 1882 in Waverly, Iowa.10 William C. NEWBURN (son of John NEWBURN and Sarah) was born in November 1852 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.9,10 He died in October 1903 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.10 He was buried in Coldwater Catholic Church Cemetery, Butler County, Iowa.10 William's obituary appeared in The Iowa Recorder, 31 October 1903 on page 11. "OBITUARY -- William C. Newburn was born in Philadelphia in December, 1852 [in the 1900 census, his birthdate was recorded as November 1852] and died at his home in Coldwater township, Butler county, Iowa in October 1903, aged 51 years and 10 months." [Actually, William died at the age of 50 years, 10 months.]

"Mr. Newburn moved with his parents to Bennezette township in 1867 and in 1877 was united in marriage to Miss Catherine O'Brien at Waverly, Iowa. In 1878, he settled on a farm in Coldwater township, where he remained until his demise."

[Their year of marriage, mentioned in this obituary, appears to be incorrect. In the 1900 census, William and Catherine reported they had been married for 18 years which would mean they were married about 1882. That year appears to be more accurate since both Catherine and William were recorded as unmarried in the 1880 census, while living in Butler County, Iowa. In 1880, Catherine was living with her two unmarried brothers, George and John O'Brien and William Newburn was living in Jefferson Township, Butler County, where he was recorded as unmarried and working as a gunsmith. Catherine's older brother, George, died in 1881 and her other brother John, married in 1881. Then in 1882, Catherine and William Newburn married. There was a 10 year age difference between Catherine and William. He was 30 when they married and Catherine was 40.]

"The deceased leaves to mourn his loss a wife, an adopted son [Perry Newburn], a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Newburn, a brother George and sister, Mrs. Effie Mulburn all of Little Falls, Minn., also a sister, Mrs. Florence Mitchell of Storley, N. Dak., and another sister, Mrs. Mande Little, who resides in the state of Washington. None of these relatives were able to be present at the funeral. The funeral services were conducted by Father Sheehy at the Coldwater Catholic church and interment was made in the cemetery there." Both of William's parents were born in England, according to their entry in the 1870 Iowa census for Butler County. Catherine "Kate" O'BRIEN and William C. NEWBURN had the following children:

5. Patrick O'BRIEN (Timothy-1) was born in 1842 in Canada.1 He died on 28 March 1876 in Iowa.2 He was buried in Nettleton Cemetery, Butler County, Iowa.2 Patrick died at the age of 34.

Patrick O'BRIEN and Mary DOYLE were married about 1871 in Iowa.11 Exact date of their wedding is not known. Mary DOYLE was born on 19 May 1848 in Ottawa, Canada.2,11 She died on 10 April 1900 in Butler County, Iowa.2,11 She was buried in Nettleton Cemetery, Butler County, Iowa.2

Mary's obituary appeared in the Iowa Recorder newspaper, Greene, Iowa as follows: "Miss Mary Doyle was born in Ottawa, Canada, May 19, 1848 at her home in Coldwater township, April 10, 1900, aged 51years, 10months and 21 days. The deceased moved with her parents to Butler Center in 1865, and has since resided in Butler county. After moving to this county she was married to Patrick O'Brien, who died several years ago. Two sons, six sisters, two brothers and a large number of relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss. The sons are Robert and Timothy of Greene, sisters and brothers, Mrs. J. McMahon, Mrs. L. Haggerty, Miss Theresa Doyle of Greene, Mrs. J. McGee of Butler Center, Mrs. G. Crosby of Collins, IA, Robert Doyle of Eagle Grove and Peter Doyle of Parkersburg."

"The deceased was a fervent Catholic and an exemplary mother, and her presence will be greatly missed by all relatives and friends. The funeral was held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic church, Rev. Father Sheehey conducting the services, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Coldwater Catholic cemetery. The following persons acted as pall bearers at the funeral: Tom Hanley, Henry Feyereisen, C. Cleary, J. Downing, Wm. Newbern, H. Kohlhaas. The relatives and friends have the sympathy of all in their sorrow."

Patrick O'BRIEN and Mary DOYLE had the following children:

Third Generation

10. Perry Andrew NEWBURN (Catherine "Kate" O'BRIEN-2, Timothy-1) was born on 29 June 1886 in New York City, New York.9,14 In many genealogical records for this family, their last name is spelled NEWBERN. He was adopted.10 Perry was their only child. On 5 June 1917, Perry registered for the World War I military draft. At that time, he was farming near Greene, Iowa in Butler County. On his draft card, he reported that he was married and had three children. His last name was spelled NEWBERN. He died in 1954.16 He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16 Perry and his wife, Julia are buried in section A-17 of St. Mary's Cemetery.

Perry Andrew NEWBURN and Julia Mary STEVENS were married on 19 February 1912 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.15 Perry and Julia were married at 6 a.m., Monday the 19th of February, 1912 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, by Rev. Father Sheehy. Their wedding was a surprise to many friends and family, as noted in the local newspaper. Immediately after the ceremony, they left Greene for Clarksville, Iowa where they spent their honeymoon with relatives of Julia. The article noted: "Friends of Perry have noted a far away look in his eye of late, but not aware that it meant matrimony, and many will be surprised at hearing of his marriage. However, he is a fine young man and should make a model husband. He owns a fine improved farm of 160 acres five miles south of Greene where he and his bride will make their home after March first and these young people will start life where many have left off." Julia Mary STEVENS (daughter of Andrew J. STEVENS) was born in 1894 in Iowa.16,24 She died in 1982.16 She was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16 Perry Andrew NEWBURN and Julia Mary STEVENS had the following children:

13 i. Catherine Flora NEWBURN was born on 29 December 1912 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.16,24 She died on 13 June 1921.16 Catherine is buried near her parents, Perry and Julia, in section A-17 in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Catherine was only 8 years old at the time of her death.

14 ii. William C. NEWBURN was born on 11 December 1914 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.24,25 He died on 26 February 2006 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.25 In the Social Security Death Index, William's last name is spelled, NEWBERN.

15 iii. Lucy M. NEWBURN was born on 4 May 1917 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.24,26 She died on 27 March 2008 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.26 Lucy's last name was spelled, NEWBERN, in the Social Security Death Index.

16 iv. Earl NEWBURN was born on 16 July 1919 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.24,27 He died on 3 November 1995 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.27 In the Social Security Death Index, Earl's last name was spelled, Newbern.

11. Robert F. O'BRIEN (Patrick-2, Timothy-1) was born on 30 April 1872 in Butler County, Iowa.5,11,17 He died on 10 April 1946 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.18,19 He was buried on 12 April 1946 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.18 Robert died at his home in Greene, after a brief illness. He was 73. He was born on a farm near Greene to Patrick O'Brien and Mary Doyle. After their marriage, Robert and his wife Mary lived on a farm about 4 miles south of Greene where they raised their family and farmed. Robert was survived by his wife and six children: Agnes and Louis of Waterloo, Raymond and Mrs. Bernice Devereux of Greene and Mildred and Maurice at home. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery in Greene.

Robert F. O'BRIEN and Ellen L. DALLEY were married on 2 April 1902 in Butler County, Iowa.18 Robert and his wife, "Nellie" farmed 80 acres in section 26 of Butler County, Iowa. Ellen L. DALLEY was born in 1878 in Iowa.16,28 She died in 1955.16 Robert F. O'BRIEN and Ellen L. DALLEY had the following children:

17 i. Agnes M. O'BRIEN was born on 8 February 1903 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.28,29 She died on 13 August 1986 in Butler County, Iowa.23,29

18 ii. Leonard R. O'BRIEN was born in 1904 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.16,28 He died in 1942.16 He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16 Leonard is buried with his parents in section A-23, in St. Mary's Cemetery.

+19 iii. Raymond T. O'BRIEN, born on 27 July 1906, Greene, Butler County, Iowa28,30; married Cyrilla STADICK, on 17 January 1939, Douglas, North Dakota30; died on 29 April 1960, Charles City, Iowa30.

12. Timothy J. O'BRIEN (Patrick-2, Timothy-1) was born on 21 October 1874 in Butler County, Iowa.5,11,20 He died on 22 January 1946 in Butler County, Iowa.22,23 He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16 Timothy and his wife, Mary are buried in section A-26 of St. Mary's Cemetery.

Timothy J. O'BRIEN and Mary A. were married in 1898 in Iowa.21 Mary A. was born in March 1874 in Iowa.36 She died in 1969.16 She was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16 Timothy J. O'BRIEN and Mary A. had the following children:

24 i. Irene Mary O'BRIEN was born in August 1899 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.36 In the 1910 census for her parent's household, Mary was recorded as Irene M., while in the 1900 census, she was recorded as Mary I. In the 1920 census in her parent's household, she was simply recorded as Irene. According to her brother, Eugene's funeral notice in the Waterloo Daily Courier (6 August 1972, page 8), Irene's married name was, Irene Kielty and she was living in Greene, Iowa as of that date.

25 ii. Eugene Louis O'BRIEN was born on 4 March 1907 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.16,21 He died on 3 August 1972.16 He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16 Eugene is buried near his parents, Timothy and Mary, in section A-26 of St. Mary's Cemetery.

Fourth Generation

19. Raymond T. O'BRIEN (Robert F.-3, Patrick-2, Timothy-1) was born on 27 July 1906 in Greene, Butler County, Iowa.28,30 He died on 29 April 1960 in Charles City, Iowa.30 He was buried on 2 May 1960 in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Greene, Butler County, Iowa.16,30 Raymond's obituary appeared in The Greene Recorder, on 4 May 1960 on page 1. "...[after their marriage in North Dakota] Raymond and Ellen farmed near Greene and Marble Rock. Survivors include his wife, three children, James 10, Mary 6, Timothy 2; two brothers, Louis of Waterloo and Maurice of Greene and three sisters, Mrs. Paul Devereux of Marble Rock and Mildred and Agnes of Greene. His parents and one brother, Leonard, preceded him in death." Raymond died from cancer at the age of 53 and is buried in section A-31 in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Raymond T. O'BRIEN and Cyrilla STADICK were married on 17 January 1939 in Douglas, North Dakota.30 Cyrilla STADICK date of birth is not known. Raymond T. O'BRIEN and Cyrilla STADICK had the following children:

20. Louis T. O'BRIEN (Robert F.-3, Patrick-2, Timothy-1) was born on 10 July 1908 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.28,31 He died on 19 June 1993 in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa.31

Louis T. O'BRIEN and Agnes C. FROST were married on 25 November 1937 in St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, Iowa.32 Agnes C. FROST (daughter of N. J. FROST and Mrs. FROST) date of birth is not known.

22. Bernice K. O'BRIEN (Robert F.-3, Patrick-2, Timothy-1) was born on 13 September 1914 in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa.28,33 She died in May 1980 in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.33

Bernice K. O'BRIEN and Paul DEVEREUX were married. Paul DEVEREUX was born on 4 April 1903.39,40 He died on 3 April 1974 in Dougherty, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.39 Paul's funeral was held Friday, 5 April 1974 at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Dougherty, Iowa. He was survived by his wife, Bernice (O'Brien), 7 sons: William of Hampton, Iowa, Alexander of Norway, John, Patrick and Bernard all of Cedar Rapids and Donovan at home. Maurice D. O'BRIEN and Bernadint WELCH were married on 6 February 1950 in Butler County, Iowa.34 The wedding of Maurice and Bernadint was recorded in The Iowa Recorder newspaper on 8 February 1950, on page 5. "Welch-O'Brien Vows are Read Recently -- Bernadint Welch, daughter of Mrs. Florence Welch, 611 Howard St., Charles City, became the bride of Maurice O'Brien, son of Mrs. Ellen O'Brien [and the late Robert F. O'Brien], Greene, this morning, Monday, February sixth at the Immaculate Conception church. ...Gerry Witzel, cousin of the bride, was maid of honor and ...Louis Downing was the bridegroom's attendant. A breakfast was held in Lucille's Tea Room. The couple will take a short trip to the southwestern states, after which they will be at home in Greene. Mrs. O'Brien is a graduate of the Charles City high school and has been employed as a secretary in the E.W. Henke law office. Mr. O'Brien is a graduate of the Greene Academy and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is engaged in farming. Guests attending the wedding were Mildred O'Brien, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Devereaux and Mrs. Raymond O'Brien, Pat Newbern, Jim and Gene Nettleton all of Greene; Agnes O'Brien, Waterloo; Evangeline Welch, John Welch and Mrs. Eric Neu and son, Billy from Ann Arbor, Michigan." Bernadint WELCH (daughter of Florence WELCH) date of birth is not known.
