Payne Cemetery
Section 13, Byron Twp
Payne Cemetery is a small family cemetery containing three families with 15 burials, located close to the road and on the farm of Charles and Lois Tempus, in section 13 of Byron Township, Buchanan County. The following information was taken from the 1860 Census Buchanan County, Buffalo Grove Post office, and the Civil War Compendium.
Andrew Payne 56 year old is a farmer, born in Vermont. His wife Abigail, 54 years old, born in New York. All 5 of Andrew and Abigail's children in 1860 Census were born in New York. Mary E. second child, age 21 years, Julia 15, Sara 10, Henry 8 years old. Two son, Frederick 22, and William 18 fought in the Civil War in Company E5th Iowa Infantry. Charles Tullock and his family were also mentioned.
Charles, 25, listed his occupation as a farmer and born in Canada West. His wife Helen M. 27 years old was born in New York. One child is listed, John, 1 year old born in Iowa. Betsy Payne 13 years old, born in New York lives with said family.
